    Thank you for answering in one video what I’ve spent days investigating! The RC-500 can be a marvelously versatile device for those of us who are persistent enough to find a source-you-who can distill and share simple directions from needlessly complex and presumptive manufacturers’ manuals. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! One question: Can the MC-8 control the RC-500’s incremental /variable settings-volume, drum kit, etc? You covered one of the incremental variables, “tempo” in the video. So I’m hopeful there are options. Thanks!

    Im going to say this is by far the best tutorial i have seen by far without a doubt on how to use the morningstar midi controller. I want to give you a special thank you because there is almost no content on your with a step by step tutorial on how to use the editor tool and this would have saved me $50.00 an hour to have someone teach me how to use mine. Thank you for this and hopefully more people find this video! Great stuff and i will check to see if you have more in depth content for programming different functions as well as i always like to learn and midi is not my strong suit lol. Awesome stuff man. Was wondering if anyone is able to help me on here please. I'm building up an acoustic set to play live but am pretty new to looping and am a bit rubbish with tech. I'm currently using an FS7 switch with my RC5 Boss pedal, but want a midi pedal that's able to move up and down from one saved memory to another, stop and start a memory, clear a memory and undo / redo a take. I don’t really want anything more than that, so the Morning Star feels a bit like over kill. Has anyone got any suggestions of the type of pedal I’m looking for that could be used with the Boss RC5? Cheers…

    I have a Bias Mini 300W head (MIDI in/out > accepts and sends CC and PC messages) & a Headrush MX5 Board.
    How can I use a MIDI controller to do the following for example?
    1. Press footswitch 1 on the midi controller > Change Bias Mini to clean present & activate Chorus+Delay on Headrush MX5
    2. Press footswitch 2 on the midi controller > Change Bias Mini to Overdrive preset & deactive Chorus+Delay on Headrush MX5

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK

      So.. you would set up multiple commands and give them different midi channels. Let’s say you set up so the Amp is Channel 1 and the MX-5 is channel 2.
      You can press one button and send up to 16 commands at the same time.
      Look at MorningStar’s RUclips channel and it shows how to send commands to multiple devices at the same time. 👍🏻

    MIDI is an Industry Standard for a reason and why it's still included on most Equipment that utilises it's communication protocol, which is set in stone by most. Yes there are a few companies that don't follow the protocol but always a way to revert/change to the Standard. There's a Standard list of functions for Midi and only 16 Channels, it's not rocket science and your claim it's a pain and loads of companies use it differently is just wrong. What your doing is creating a false issue to seem like the product is the solution and that is just a sales pitch! Or of course you just don't know anything about it....

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK

      Fair enough John.
      I honestly get emails, weekly now, about how to sync midi and how to use midi and it can be very daunting and confusing for people who have never used it, don’t use it and understand it. Telling effects pedal to play bucket to each other isn’t the easiest. I have used it for years and personally think its a pain in the arse due to the lack of conformity.. especially when things don’t work the way you expect. That’s where I’m coming from and yes MorningStar is a solution with really well thought out software which makes it easy, sales pitch or not. I appreciate your comment and for people who understand midi like yourself John, then that’s fair enough.

      I would've been impressed with your comment, but after throwing an insult in the end I've come to the conclusion your just a douche. At least he produced a good review.

    Is it true that there is not a way to send a MIDI message to overdub??

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  2 года назад

      Hey 👋
      If you are referring to the Boss pedals, it s Rec/play button, just like to the unit so,yeah there is no Overdub button but if you se the unit (RC-5 or RC-500) to record or overdub when you hit the button, then the Morningstar will do the same thing. Hope that helps.

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK Hi, yes I am talking about the boss rc-5. I was able to set up one of the cc messages to do stop/play which on an empty track triggers also record. How do you trigger overdub? Does this make sense?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  2 года назад

      Yes. So with the RC-5 there is no ‘overdub’ button per say, you can have an external pedal like an FS5/6/7 as “R/P/S/C” (record/play/stop/clear) or for midi commands you can have one of the CC assigns simply as ‘Rec Action’ and that should toggle record on and off. 👍🏻
      Hope that helps.

      thanks @@JohnPaulMusicUK , so basically if I assign via MIDI a 'Rec Action' and toggle record on, to the start recording do I also need to call the midi message Stop Play to actually start recording?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  2 года назад

      On my Morningstar I have to send an ‘on’ and ‘off’ message (2 commands, on = 127 and off = 0) hope that makes sense.

    Software really is eating the world isn’t it? In theory, you could build a software adaptor between any MIDI controller and make it as capable as the MC8, but the faff of implementing that is a complete PITA compared to having a pedal that already does it.

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  3 года назад

      Exactly - a few years ago I looked into building a Bluetooth floor pedal that had 12 buttons with a raspberry I Bluetooth LE module to have more control wirelessly for Loopy HD - most would only have up to 4 for some reason and no more.. skip forward a few years and they are everywhere and have much better user experiences and software compatibility than I could ever build!

    • @PiersCawley
      @PiersCawley 3 года назад +1

      @@JohnPaulMusicUK And it’s probably more or less the kind of thing you were thinking of building internally. I bet the Bill of Materials comes up a very small fraction of the retail cost, but the software experience is so good you don’t begrudge them the money. And a BoM never takes into account the value of your own time building the thing. Time that would be better spent learning to work with the instruments and loopers you’re controlling anyway.
      And now I’m wondering how hard it would be to build a Bluetooth LE Midi Repeater in something like the Blue Icicle format that you could plug into one of the Omni ports on the MC8. Assuming one doesn’t already exist.

    Well got to say, this video has really helped me, thank you John Paul! I’ve largely followed your set up on RC-5, apart from set up rhythm variation A/B as a simple press rather than hold down (using toggle mode on MC8, with position 1 - A, and position 2 - B). The only thing I’m struggling with is being able to set up an overdub on the Morningstar, currently having to use actual looper pedal for this?

    • @JohnPaulMusicUK
      @JohnPaulMusicUK  3 года назад +1

      Hey 👋
      Ooh so an overdub would be a record option.. like duplicating the RC-5 pedal itself. Yeah I would stick to using the actual loop pedal.. but if you just wanted to use the Morningstar, then it would be a copy of what the pedal does. 👍🏼

    Can you change channels and master switches in a Dsl40cr with it?

      That depends. Does the DSL40CR have the capability of midi in and out? Then maybe.

    I’ve been enjoying your work John! I’m considering getting an MC8 to go with my RC600, because why not! Looks like it can do a lot. I’m very curious about whether individual rc600 effects can be controlled with the mc8, would be interested to see a video of you doing this at some point down the line 😊 keep up the great work!

      Yes it can.. but you might want to see this video - cause you can program the the RC-600 up for lots of different things on one memory.
