@@petouser good image quality for stills doesn’t always translate to good video image quality. A camera needs good bit and data rates in addition to a quality sensor
Pentax made a variety of decisions that made the camera less than it could of been: 1. Even working within the confines of AVCHD, where Pentax could of encoded at ~25Mbps, they top out at ~20-21 Mbps. This has obvious consequences in image sharpness/detail. 2. The K-01 does record PCM audio, to bad the sample rate is 32 Khz. What were they thinking? Were they thinking? It would be nice to know who pulled that one out of their backside. 3. Attaching an external HDMI screen auto-switches the camera into playback mode. So you have no way of working around the lack of an EVF with an external monitor. Be aware the rear LCD screen is low resolution and very hard to see in sunlight. Please note all three of the above issues have to do with Firmware/Software decisions, not hardware.
The K-01 did amazing!! This may need to be DP Review TV’s video camera of choice from now on! As payback, it may be time for a vintage 35mm focal length shootout for Chris!!
Interesting! As long as the audio was bad, I was noticing the Pentax's low quality video. 10 seconds after the sound was fixed, I completely forgot about it.
@petouser Jordan explained the problems with this camera in a subsequent episode. In summary: - The image is soft yet oversharpened - The dynamic range is extremely small, so it takes a lot more work with lighting to shoot it outdoors - The IBIS is useless - You can only use lenses wide open - No headphone jack or audio level display (which reared its ugly head here with the audio clipping) Pros like Jordan can compensate for many of those shortcomings, particularly by artificially lighting a scene, but it's definitely a pain in the ass.
This is the kind of lens that might yet tempt me back into full frame.. I don't need absolute razor sharpness in a zoom and these results still look well-acceptable for my personal use, so I'd gladly pick this over a 24-70 2.8's extra bulk even at a bit of a compromise.
The lens looks fine and all, but what this episode really convinced me about is that getting a Pentax would be fun. I’m sure a lot of people besides myself would be VERY interested in a little behind-the-scenes discussing which lenses you are using on the K-01, as well as what post production is like compared to the S1H. For me, the most noticeable improvement in video tech in the past decade has had to do with how much more easily my computer can handle video footage-it used to struggle adding effects to a 5D II in 1080p, now a similar level MacBook can zoom through 4k with no stutters or setbacks. I imagine that for that reason, post production on the Pentax must be so much better than it used to feel circa 2012.
Reviewing this on my Apple Watch, the video looked great. At 1080p you can tell it's not very sharp, mushy details and lots of digital sharpening on the edges, was that the camera or post? Colours looked good enough. I'll bet most people would be focusing on the story and the quality from the reviewed product and not the output from the Pentax. From that perspective it worked just fine.
Am I the only one who didn't notice much of a difference in the video? This review would be far, far better with some comparison shots to the Tamron and larger Sigma as well as laying out the trade-offs: weather sealing, weight, magnification, etc. Honestly this was very light on information for someone to make a decision on.

Hi Chris, just watched this review and your concluding comments where taken on board. The two lenses reviewed were pretty good but I decided to go with Sigma 24-70 2.8. thanks excellent review.
I agree that maybe that extra 200 is worth it for the 24-70 but I have been seeing a lot of stuff online about excessive dust getting in that 24-70 lens which leads me to stay away from it. I've seen it on tons of reviews on multiple websites and it is also on reddit as well with multiple users showing evidence of this being an issue with the lens.
This is basically where I am at. I would be content to deal with the extra weight in exchange for the extra features and improved sharpness but I'm not dropping €1100 on a lens I need to strip and self-service to remove dust, I don't want to deal with that. Also, while the 28-70mm is not weather sealed, the 24-70 sure as fuck isn't weather sealed very well if lots of dust is getting in after a matter of days in the case of some people I've seen.
I think we need much more challenging shots for the Pentax. That still looks way too good. Come on, give us something to work with here for all the subscriptions! Also, nice work on the intro. How much work went into that mock-up of the K-01 on the S1H?
The dub over brought back memories of late nights watching Japanese obstacle course shows on comedy center AP. I forget the name of the show. Hilarious.
I'm all about smaller and lighter lenses but so far it really seems like this is Sigma's weakest performing lens. I was hoping this would be the perfect lens for my A7c but I'm not convinced that this has the Sigma IQ I've come to expect! Great job with the dubbing btw - spot on!
I have to ask was that 28mm and 70mm edge curve test done with internal camera correction on? Has Sony or adobe put out the camera corrections and the Lightroom corrections yet?

I ordered on Amazon the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN and the Sony 24-70mm F4.0 Zeiss in order to compare them on my a7c. I was convinced I would prefer the Sigma but I actually ended up keeping the Zeiss because the image quality is simmilar if not slightly better on the Zeiss, it also has a wider end and it's cheaper. I am extremely surprised about this, especially since I've read a lot of negative reviews about the Zeiss. I'm curious if anybody else had the same impression about these lenses? PS: I've also tried the Sony 24-105mm F4.0. It's definetly a better option in termes of image quality. The only downside is the weight and size.
The K-01 was a good camera with great image quality and a design that wasn’t for everyone. I happen to like it. Video quality was alright for 2012, which, as we can see here, is still fine for youtube. No, I can’t reach the green button either.

The video actually looks pretty decent! Frankly hard to see any difference between it and previous videos. Full HD is plenty for RUclips videos. No doubt it though took more of an effort than with a modern camera. The audio was of course terrible - but it should not have been. I have shot video using either the internal microphone on a K-01 or an external one and the outcome was reasonable, far better than what they got. So there must be something wrong with this particular camera or some weird compatibility issue with the camera and the microphone.
That Pentax K-01 looks better than I thought it would. But isn't it unfair that Jordan needs to shot with crappy stuff while Chris gets to play with the latest? I'd like to see Chris reviewing and shooting some old gear as well.
