I gotta say, in the space of about 1 minute you summarized all the main points necessary for deciding whether this lens makes sense for a person. You used images that supported your arguments and just got right down to it. Really great video.
Great video. I appreciate the info about the ergonomics and it cutting into your finger. That really makes a difference when using a lens for hours during a wedding shoot
Thanks for the real world review. I think this lens is a real winner, due to its wide max aperture and compact size, while not sacrificing on the image quality.
You earned a sub my friend. I loved the way you handled this review so well, sharing pictures every now and then. You didn’t go towards weird directions, stayed concise and to the point. Thanks a lot. I am heavily considering this lens as currently I have the 50mm 1.8 and 7artisans 25mm manual lens. I need a good zoom lens as a one-lens setup while travelling.
I'm a fan from Taiwan, I got my SIGMA fp and kit lens 45mm DN DG C for the first half year, and I'm very satisfied with its light weight and image quality. But at same time, I'm always wanted to buy another zoom lens for travelling. Today this lens just show up in time! I don't need to worry about if 24-70mm lens is too heavy or too huge to carry around, the new 28-70mm lens might be the best choice for me now! And thanks again for your awesome video review!
Thanks for the review. Would like to see the focal length and aperture value listed on your sample photos so I can judge the sharpness on portraits and whether it's wide open or stopped down.
Noted! I only had 3 days to make this review and it all takes so much time. Next time. For your info all photos were taken at f2.8 apart from the landscape or wide town pictures which were done at f8 - that's it
I think I will get this lens for the S5 II instead of the Panasonic 20-60. I like the constant aperture of 2.8 and don´t really need that wide angle right now. Great video!
Very nice review. I have like 4 reviews of this lens incoming at the same time, but I prefer to watch yours first. So this lens has the advantage of light weight, and results seem similar.
I was thinking on buying the sigma 24-70 f2.8, but this lens looks very tempting for the size and weight... Probably would pair it with a wide-angle zoom or prime.
Superb video Pav , am enjoying the 35mm f2 sigma , I’m definitely considering adding this to my kit ! Great photos by the way , all the best to you Gary
It's a good lens but doesn't replace primes. Different tools for different jobs in my opinion. Changing lenses is a part of the process (unfortunately).
I have the a6600 and large lens library for a good small light system but looking at FF for better home/local/low light photos. I’m thinking of the 24-70 2.8 for a one lens solution on an a7 series.
@@PavSZ yeah I got the 24-70 and it’s like a cinder block! I think it could fit in my system though. A6600 plus sigma primes while on the move, and a7iv with “Big Sigma” for home life.
Great video! I am looking at buying the Sony ZVE10 and a lens as well. I need a lens to be able to video my classroom lessons, from the back at the room, while still having a crispy shot that can focus on me, without any background blur. Would this be good for that?
Hi, watching for the lens review, but got distracted because of the awesome talking headshot looks 🤣 Are you using some kind of mist filter for the talking head part?
If it had been available for Z mount it would be a no brainer for me: I can't justify the full 24-70 Art price for a lens I rarely use. And I don't care about the 'features' that make it cheaper anyway... I guess I'll have to wait for Sigma to finally make it's way to the Z mount natively!
Thanks for the review, concise and to the point. Is there any difference when you crop your images between this and the 24-70 lens?? Can you test the focusing reliability on Lumix cameras if possible?
I just got mine and im a Old War Horse ! This lens feels like im carrying my Nifty 50 ?! (Light) i thought i had bought this with AF and see no button for this function ?! Im not lazy so it doesnt effect my SeaScaping , Sunset, Sunrise chores ! Im about to ride the wheels off this Sigma Lens !! 👌 👌 👌
Hello Pav, thanks for review. Will you also do a review on the L mount with Lumix S series? I am wondering how the AF will do with the Lumix cameras ....
@@PavSZ I guess I was not clear, I was not thinking of a competitor 28-70 by Lumix, I was rather thinking of testing the Sigma 28-70 2.8 on a S5 or s1h to see how good it’s the AF with a Lumix camera rather than a Sony. I already have an S5 and would love to buy this new Sigma 28-70 2.8 but would wait to see some AF tests before buying.... Hope it clarifies. Ps: I am a big fan of your reviews...
Hey Pav, I believe you also shoot Panasonic. How does this lens behave on your Panasonic? I'm debating on whether to get this lens or the 24-70 Sigma for my S5. I do portrait photography, wedding photography and video, and racing action video. Thank you so much.
I do shoot with S5 but I was supplied only with Sony-E mount of this lens for this review. It is a great lens and the L-mount version would work great on S5 but in crop mode only. It is a APS-C lens so for photography you are going to loose some resolution
Hey Pav! I think you got two things mixed together! Almost all current mirrorless lenses are focused by wire, but both the sigmas are linear (as opposed to the Tamron) meaning you can actually focus pull accurately
Yeah I got tired of waiting for a non-garbage (and not GM) 50mm Sony lens and pulled the trigger on the Zeiss 55 1.8. the image quality on that is amazing. It is kind of pricey but not as pricey as their other lenses. I do video, so this lens, which has surprisingly sticky focus for being an old lens, is great. But yeah I really find it weird Sigma hasn't made a new 50 mm for Sony yet... Photographers are pretty much begging for something new. The Zeiss is not everyone's budget or answer sadly.
In my opinion is here to compete with the tamron. The problem is that is not even out, and is a problem because there is no second hand market for this one as there is for the tamron. This one would cost 750 pounds and the tamron second hand you can find it for 600 even less. So if you are in a budget as I am and don’t mind a bit less of sharpens to save a good chunk the tamron. If money if not a problem I would say sigma newer and sharper.
@@PavSZ yes that’s is true in one year probably would the best value without any doubt. But if you need a 28-70 right now maybe the tamron in my opinion. But that’s only if the budget is tight. Because 760 is a very good price for a new lens.
@@PavSZ Agreed. My favorite photos were taken with a voigtlander nokton classic, which is far from “perfect”, but nobody judges good photographs based on pixel peeping sharpness. “Oh well you see I saw your photo while I was farting in my hand and sniffing it and I noticed that the corners were just a tiny bit softer than the center. 0/10, it isn’t art unless it’s technologically perfect.”

Great vid Pavel! I'm thinking of selling all my i-series to get this one. Tired of carrying and changing lenses all the time :) How's the AF in S5?

6:34 I think the cheaper Tamron 28-200 also competes well. It basically has 28-70 f/2.8-4 and 70-200 in one lens.
but Tamron 28-200 is f2.8-5.6 lens, not constant aperture like this one - different kind of tool
@@PavSZ I have 28-200 for travel and Sigma 24-70 for serious work, which requires 24mm. For me 28-70 is an awkward FL.
