  • I did a product review of an ultralight bear canister that easily fits into backpacks. I compared it to my bear canister, the bear vault. If you'd like to go ultralight and have to use a bear canister, this might be a good choice.

I have the mid sized bear vault. Nothing warms the blood and fronts nights the fingers more than trying to open it on a cold morning. Always seem to get it open just before deciding it’s better to go hungry. That Bare Boxer, seems the perfect companion to my Backpacker’s Cache which is better for longer trips. I also have the Grubcan which opens nicely and holds a lot of food, but they have run into supply chain issues and for now won’t make a smaller version of it - except their $250 or so carbon fiber one.

I agree about the fingers :-) I mainly go on one to three-night trips, so my small cans work well for me. To use such a small light bear can. I have to break things down to make it fit for a three-day trip. The carbon fiber cans tend to be outside of my price range. I wish somebody would make an ultralight, small carbon fiber can that is easy to open for humans but costs $100 or less.

So like your hard work on the videos. I have the black one, bearvault can't use in the Adirondacks, so I can only use the small black one don't know it the company, I have a big black one holds food for 8 days plus or minus. Thanks for all your hard work

Other brands make a bear canister that is much heavier but looks like this. I feel like this can is a good find. I can't afford it, but there's one called a bearcade, and it is made of carbon fiber, and you can get a large one that is less weight than mine. I plan to get one of those when I can afford it.
Thank you for your positive word of encouragement!

That's my favorite bear can; literally nobody uses it and few know about it. Most hikers still shun bear cans no matter how much they want to virtue signal about bear safety and "leave no trace" otherwise. They are a pain but this one makes the whole ordeal reasonable for shorter hikes.

I have put 3.5 days of food in it. You defiantly needed to work at it, but I did it.

I guess I'm missing the part where you show the Bears inability to access the food in the barrel.

I don’t know how to film that because I can’t determine when a bear will be around. But, because of the shape and texture, the Bears can’t pick it up and carry it away. The idea of it is that the Bears will get tired and leave. And because of the shape, they can’t crush it very quickly. The idea of it is that the Bears will get tired and go.
There is no perfect solution, but bears will give up after a short period and go after something more accessible.
