    Why do you need a filter when camping😂

    • @BackpackingGearNut
      @BackpackingGearNut День назад

      It depends on where you camp. If you’re car camping and you go to a place that has potable water or you bring all of your water. You don’t need one. If you have a smaller vehicle and don’t have the space to carry enough water and you go to a place that doesn’t provide potable water, a filter is a great way to make sure that you have access to water. I mostly use them when I am backpacking.

    For me it looks perfect to take family camping. Been using a sawyer with a big bladder and hanging it so this other option sounds way better!

    • @BackpackingGearNut
      @BackpackingGearNut День назад

      The Sawyer doesn’t have a charcoal filter in it so this filter Would help you eliminate any bad taste. I usually filter out of streams when I can so that I can get the cleanest and best tasting water when I carry the Sawyer. But as you could see in the video, there are certain parts of California that don’t have a lot of water and sometimes you just have to thank God for the puddle that you just found And filter that. I’m also testing several other filters. It’s the nature of the channel for me to keep trying new products. Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy the content!

      @@BackpackingGearNut :) Depends how valuable you consider your water. I have videos where I run food dye thru it. With how crazy the world is getting I want to know my water is perfect. How often do they find a dead body in a water supply that was there for weeks. Using a sawyer or something else like that would not be good. Ever heard of this sleeping bag Western Mountaineering Bristlecone MF Go look that up. I also run this the best in the world. You just have to ask yourself is it worth the weight? If you want to run a 10lb pack then in my view your just taking to many chances with a sawyer after all it only takes that 1 time. How about this...... Naegleria fowleri is an ameba (type of one-celled organism) that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is often called the "brain-eating ameba" because it can infect the brain and destroy brain tissue. Brain infections caused by Naegleria fowleri are very rare but nearly always fatal. In TN where I hike this happens every year. Someone dies of this. I put importance on items not weight. Water is number 1 and I want to be as perfect as possible. Also depends on the season. In winter the same applies I want the best heat I can get. Now you take my pot set which weighs 3 lbs. People would go crazy. LOL But I can steam and cook anything. I rarely take freeze dried meals they are just not good for you. Now my 2 man tent is a dan durston at 2lbs. My total pack weight is 30lbs. Even with these so called heavy items. Some of my items are heavy and others are super light. Now a trick I use is moving items around the body. For example My water sits on my hip where you feel no weight at all. I wear 2 drop downs. The one on my right hip carries my firearm. The one on my left hip I carry my knife and silky saw. So now when I remove my pack these items stay with me all the time. Search my channel for Silky Professional Gomboy Case and you will see what I mean. Has taken me years to get this dialed in so I can carry what I want and it does not feel like it. If you buy that first need you will not use anything else I promise.

      My filters tend to last me about a year, but I am careful how dirty the water is that I put in them. I also would suggest pre-filtering before it goes into the filter and that’ll help. I have most of all of the major brands of filters, and they all clog. Some of them are nice because they’re easy to backflush, but with all of them I have found that I need to take a little extra care about the water I put in. Thank you so much for your comments!

      The small black panel eventually failed, but the folding and white panels worked great for me. I have noticed that my phone charges slowly with these. I found a great workaround; I charge my Nitecore 10,000mAh battery instead of my phone. My iPhone charges faster when it gets higher voltage, but my Nitecore will take advantage of the extra amps at 5 volts. I then charge my phone as needed from my battery pack at the fastest rate. I hope this helps you!

    I have the mid sized bear vault. Nothing warms the blood and fronts nights the fingers more than trying to open it on a cold morning. Always seem to get it open just before deciding it’s better to go hungry. That Bare Boxer, seems the perfect companion to my Backpacker’s Cache which is better for longer trips. I also have the Grubcan which opens nicely and holds a lot of food, but they have run into supply chain issues and for now won’t make a smaller version of it - except their $250 or so carbon fiber one.

      I agree about the fingers :-) I mainly go on one to three-night trips, so my small cans work well for me. To use such a small light bear can. I have to break things down to make it fit for a three-day trip. The carbon fiber cans tend to be outside of my price range. I wish somebody would make an ultralight, small carbon fiber can that is easy to open for humans but costs $100 or less.

    you are 100% WRONG about freezing destroying the filters! your test is also flawed, because the filter needs to be WET for your test to be valid. any filter when dry will allow air to pass through it. freezing DOES NOT destroy the filter.

    • @BackpackingGearNut
      @BackpackingGearNut Месяц назад

      You are correct about it being wet. When I originally made that video, I accidentally overlooked mentioning that. The only thing I can tell you about the freezing issue is that brands state that freezing may destroy the filter. I personally have had filters destroyed by freezing in my case. It was always when they were attached to a full dirty bag. This would make more sense because if the membrane is full of water and the ice expands as ice does, that would break the filter. But if it was just wet and all the water was pretty drained out of it, I don't know. That would give the water room to expand without breaking anything. Filters that are hydrophobic require being wet for this test, while filters that are not hydrophobic don't. Non-hydrophobic membranes don't expand when they get wet. I am not the ultimate expert on all this, but this is what I have found through my research and experience. I, too, have had filters that have frozen but not been destroyed. I appreciate you challenging me. I try to be as accurate as possible, but there's always something new for me to learn. Thank you very much!

    totally NOT true! please stop spreading false information like this. these membrane filters survive freezes just fine. I have had my bag with filter attached freeze solid many times now and it always thaws out and still works just like it did before. your "blow test" is only accurate when the filter membranes are activated, meaning having been in contact with water or moisture until they are saturated. a dry membrane filter will allow air to pass right through like you showed in the video even if its a brand new filter.

    • @BackpackingGearNut
      @BackpackingGearNut Месяц назад

      After I made this, I realized that the materials were hydrophobic. You’re right it needs to be wet. Mine was not functioning because it was damaged. I’ve had filters freeze and then still work. The hard part is the majority of the time that filters have frozen, they were destroyed. I am definitely not trying to spread false information. The things that I said in the video are accurate except I forgot to add you need to wet the filter because it hydrophobic. I appreciate people like you trying to help me to continue to grow and learn more!

    Xenbivy Website needs work. I want to see the information I need at glance. For example I am looking at gear page. What do I see Title and Price. What I should see. Sizes that are clickable to see info on that item for pads like R value. With a Specication link to click. Instead I have to click the product to get any information at all. I have no comparison on the site. I should be able to compare 2 or 3 pads side by side with the Specifications. Why is this one more money then this one? If I am looking for R7 and they are all R5 or less then I can leave an not waste my time. Any how when I see a web site designed this way I go else where. I see so much work that needs to be done to make it user friendly. When I look at a product all I see is Specifications no writing under it. The other items above it have a paragraph which is great for SEO. It feels like they do not want people to click that. When Specifications is everything on parting with your hard earn money. Maybe its just me.

    • @SurvivalSavvvy
      @SurvivalSavvvy Месяц назад

      @@BackpackingGearNut The interview was OK. But it felt like you really did not prepare for it. Why did you not ask some tough questions? Hes the owner. 1) How do you test your pads? 2) What type of warranty does the customer have? 3) What makes you stand out from other companies? 4) Have you removed down from quilts? - This is actually a review on his site. Warrenty is very important. You take NEMO for example my knife slid off my chest into the pad. I thought no way will they send me a new one. I owned this pad for 7 years. They actually sent me a new pad I was amazed. Only bad thing is it took 2 months. I looked at his warranty and its horrible. So maybe more questions about warranty and getting him to be more specific because the web site is not. When I read it I got the feeling of well if you like you might do it. Any question you ask should be sent to him a head of time for him to prepare also. This way your not surprising them but you getting down to what really matters. When he says a pad is R6 how did he come to that conclusion? How did it test it? This is very important. Imagine going out in -20F and the pad was not tested and fails. You could die. Thats a bit important. :) If your going to run the big boys like Thermarest then back it up and tell us how you test and do you test better then them? Another example - The only water filter I will use is first need its expensive but they are the only company that sent me hard copies on the testing they did. They stand behind the product. If your going to interview people then ask them questions customers want to know. Not how many colors it comes in. Anyhow the more practice you get the better you will get. Make sure you do your research did you goto to his site and read all the reviews? NOPE. Did you compare the products and understand why one cost more then the other? Even if you know the answer you have to understand the people watching may not.

    ZenBivy has been cutting corners. using less down for one which makes you wander how much more they have cut. Quilts are fine for Spring, Summber, Fall but not winter you need a mummy bag. thermarest has a cold chamber to test pads and bags. Does Zenbivy have one? How does Zenbivy test thier items? Thermarest pads and mummy bag is what I trust to go -20. When I lay on a thermarest pad that's R7 I can feel the heat come off it. I have not bought one thing from Zenbivy they lack intervation they just seem like they copy others. How do they test the R value of thier products? I spend a lot on equipment. Thanks for your interest in Zenbivy. Here are the answers to some of your questios: No, we have not removed any down from any quilt. In fact, this year we "snuck in" an extra ounce of down in several of our 25 degree bags. Our beds will work in all temperatures. a -5 Bed with 3.75" of loft is coming this winter. A Zenbivy Bed is not a quilt or a bag and does not have the negatives of either. We test mattresses according to the ISO standard with our own ISO-standard test equipment. We test sleeping bags based on total measured loft, and we calibrate this to EN/ISO rating system verified in the cold chamber at University of Kansas to establish comfort and limit ratings. We don't copy others, and we have 4 issued patents and 3 patents pending that prove it. There is nothing like a Zenbivy Bed; nothing. Comparison charts are available for every product; we just cant show them all on the "all gear" page. You asked about mattresses for instance. This page shows every mattress, in a chart, with every specification, compared to all the others. zenbivy.com/pages/which-mattress-is-right-for-you. If you have trouble finding any of the other charts, you can email or chat with our CS team and they can guide you. All Zenbivy products have a lifetime warranty. What makes us stand out from other companies is our design. Everyone else makes bags. Zenbivy makes beds.

      @@Zenbivy Thank you for getting back to me. When i said some items on the gear page like R rating I was not saying all the specs just some quick facts like R rating. Just a couple specifics. The chart is great this would be nice if it was easier to find then you having to provide a link. Your own ISO standard? What does this mean exactly? One of your ratings a person stated you have removed down and he no reply you might want to look into that. Some video of this cold chamber while they test your product would be nice to see. thx for the reply

    Thank you for this, looked at the available water filtering options and hardly see anyone talking about the Lifestraw out there in comparison to the big options. I think it is a great product that sits well with the other product lineups if you don't like the Befree's system and its "proprietary" elements such as back-flushing or non-standard threading. Another option that I might be looking at is the quickdraw.

      I was going to purchase the quick draw and test it out and review it, but there were so many videos about it that I decided to focus on the Life straw. I really wanted to see the review for the outdoor vitals bag- especially I want to see the draft guard and zipper guard, and I want to see it lofted and laid out flat. I have a feeling that for photos, companies stuff all of their bags with the maximum amount of stuffing. I think OV does this too, because if you ever look at the different quilts, they look exactly the same, and you know they can't in real life with different amounts of down. If you have ever looked at the zipper guard in a nemo bag, you can see why the zippers do not snag. Unfortunately the affordable nemo bags are heavy- I got the disco 15 on sale and while I really love the quality, it's heavier than it needs to be and at 3 lbs, I don't really want to carry it. From what I have seen, the OV bags are big, but I want to get a couple of friends into bags they can carry and they are big guys who are environmental scientists (so, not super rich), and some of the OV bags are on sale right now. As a 5'1 100lb female, the OV bags are probably too big for me, but the weight and price are pretty good. Also, one of them is a 'cripple' like me and I think he used to go backpacking or he would if his gear was light enough. I'm not sure he knows about light gear, and to give someone else the gift of freedom that was given to me by youtube backpackers and my friend...it would be a great thing. He has a zero degree Kelty bag which I haven't seen, but from what I have seen with that brand, which another friend likes, it's budget and durable, which means it is heavier than I would prefer for someone who has back issues.

      I just looked through my videos and realized I never made it and posted it. I already shot all the footage for it. I use a clip from it in my current bumper for all my videos. I’ve purchased a lot of their equipment because I trust their equipment. That sleeping bag has an amazing amount of loft. I don’t have a single other sleeping bag that lofts like that. They are always underpromised and over-deliver. The zipper on that bag is beautiful. I’m a big guy and have a large bag, and I can roll around in the bag and not feel claustrophobic. There’s not a lot of loose space, but it’s cut and designed to fit the human body. What you see in the pictures is what you get. The reason I am concerned about weight is I can only carry so much. My left arm is technically crippled, even though I don’t feel like a cripple. I hope this helps! The zippers are great. Everything works really well and it’s very durable. The loft is what you expect from the pictures.
