This is accurate and helpful. Mt Tallac was full of these dangers this past weekend. I recall areas that were bridges in the morning, and collapsed in the afternoon - meaning someone probably fell through.
For people who have experience with these conditions, it is reasonably safe. The people who don’t have experience with these conditions need to go with somebody experienced.

I was actually at Donner summit couple weeks ago we were climbing at Grouse on the east side with amazing views of Donner Lake… Definitely encountered some very sketchy snow bridges… This is a great video and thank you for posting it because it’s easy to break through the snow and snap a leg.

Man, this is great information. Was hoping to go to the Tahoe area this summer to do some hiking and suspected it was still really bad. This confirms it. I’ll probably hold off this year or at least until later this summer. I’ll concentrate on my Bay Area hikes in the meantime. 😊
Yeah, if you hold off till later this summer, you’ll be fine. I don’t know if you’ve hiked in the Mendocino area but back in the mountains there there are a lot of beautiful trails. It’s one of my favorite places for mountain biking. I’ve never backpacked back there but I plan on doing it soon.

only down close to where the water is just sitting. But up higher where you’re still on top of the snow and ice it’s OK.
My son and best friend were in Yosemite about a month ago and this was a big problem… We hiked up Yosemite Falls, and then started hiking toward Eagle Peak, and within about a mile before we got to Eagle Peak, we encountered a bunch of snow bridges and had to take it very carefully.
My wife and I wanted to go, but every time we planned on going they closed the park due to floods.
Ran into this the other week in the Tetons so we bought some snow spikes for Wind River and didn't use them. Need some sort of summer snow shoes for backpacking, anyone know of anything like that?
I am no expert since I’ve only done it once, but I would pick shoes that had teeth on the outside rails since there’s so much old snow that is packed and frozen. My snowshoes didn’t have these, and I slid a lot, but my friends did, and he did much better with his.

If it came across like I was acting like this was something new it wasn’t intended to be that way. In this part of California we’ve had 10 years of not having these kind of conditions during the summer.
