    Want to start dabbling in advanced push ups? You may have seen people doing side-to-side push ups and wondered what they’re called. Those are known in the calisthenics community as “archer push ups” and are a fantastic upper body exercise.
    The archer push up is a great push up variation that builds strength beyond the basics. It not only strengthens your upper body and prepares you for the one-armed push up, but it also solidifies your core and makes you more effective at holding total body tension for other bodyweight exercises.
    In this video I explain the progressions I personally used to go from the basic push up to the archer push up. I don’t recall how long it took me to achieve archers, but I don’t recommend putting a timeframe on these things anyway. Just follow the progressions in this video and work hard at them consistently. You’ll be doing archers in no time!

    This is the second video I watched of yours and I just subscribed! You take the time to describe in detail without over doing it so we can fully understand.     Started watching your videos back in 2020, did your no equipment work out for a couple months but gave up. Now in July 2023 I got back to working out, mainly calisthenics, and 4 months later I stumbled upon this video again. After trying every progression, I realized I can actually do archer push ups! This seemed unreal back in 2020, thank you so much for making these!

    I think you are the only one who teach archer push up this good, other youtubers I see only teach using negative form only, which is still hard for me, but you teach us step by step from wide push, elevated platform, negative form, until success doing archer push up.
    Right now I'm learning using elevated platform to train thanks to your idea, and I am getting better each day. I think I might be able to do the real archer push up one day. Thank you so much for this perfect guide

    Good video, I realize now that I've been doing my archer-pushups wrong were I didn't have the elbow tucked into the ribs close enough. It's alot more challenging now and alot more rewarding.

    Very useful tips. I had tried to go from regular to archer push-ups without intermediate progression, but I had to stop almost immediately because I noticed my execution was so bad that I would have risked to get injured without correcting the form first.

      if you keep uploading consistently I'm sure it will! The only thing I would change if I were you are the thumbnails. It's great you all have same in the same color palette, but grey isn't what catches the eye most in my opinion.

      Minus The Gym no problem. Do u think it would benefit to do one day on core exercises and the next day on pectorals and arms and change it ?

      Lucaman.pilot yes, definitely! Split routines are great because you can workout frequently and still give your muscle groups plenty of rest. I typically do splits like this, but you can do whatever works for you:
      Day1: push exercises
      Day2: pull exercises
      Day3: legs & core
      Day4: push exercises
      Day5: pull exercises
      Day6: legs & core
      Day7: rest

      Hey Hashiro. Thanks for the compliments on my form :) If archers are too hard, I suggest regressing to wide push ups and elevated one-arm progressions for a while. It might seem counterintuitive but it’ll pay off. Once those regressions are very easy, the archers and typewriters will come more naturally. And if your goal is pseudo planche push ups, start working on your planche leans too if you haven’t already :)

    I do regular pushups
    typewritter pushups
    wide pushups
    elevated legs normal pushups
    pike pushups..
    MAN, it REALLY does make working my body more fun and enjoying when there are different pushup variations, unlike just the same variation over and over again..

      Firebolt73 Have you seen my beginner routine video yet? I include a full progression for pull-ups in there. If you don't have dip bars for the bodyweight rows, try starting off with hangs from the pull-up bar (bent- and straight-arm) and then progress to pull-up negatives, and assisted pull-ups as shown in the video: ruclips.net/video/ay15dc2cvm0/видео.html

    I started doing archer ring push-ups about 4 weeks ago, progressing from decline weighted push-ups. I also progressed to incline archer rows and ring-supported straight leg raises at the same time. I have been sore in my shoulders the whole time since then. It feels like DOMS in supporting muscles (shrugging up, back, or down), but I’m used to that fading in 72 hrs. I’ve read online that calisthenics can cause soreness that lasts for weeks like this, but I wanted to see if you have comments about this length of soreness.

    I skipped one or two of the steps..... I can do the archer(not sure about proper form) but the problem I'm having is discomfort in one of my shoulders, I think it's joint not muscle?
    Is it possible this is from bad form & not an underlying problem I dont know about?

    Hey just wanted to say I'm at the last progression after doing this for weeks. I can do 6 - 5 - 5 - 2 (then I do 3 reps of negatives after the 2). My archer push ups are not as pretty as yours so I'm going to keep doing this until I can do 4 sets of 8. The OAP will be next.

    I managed to do them, but it hurt my shoulders in a way that feels unhealthy.
    I understand that this can also be a problem when doing one arm push ups.

    Hey, this was an actual great video! The angles helped alot
    One problem though, one common thing they tell you to do is keep the arm fully straight. But i noticed that if i do that, my *straight arm* feels like its about to snap, and I'm not sure is if it's because I'm:
    a) Not strong enough, aka need to keep progressing
    b) my posture is wrong, I am keeping my arm *too* straight [it bends slightly backwards when fully straight], and need to keep a tiny angle of bend to prevent injury
    Do you have any suggestions about this?

      Ruby Duby thanks! :) Don't keep the arm fully straight, especially if it feels painful. Keep an angle inward. Start off with a bigger angle and gradually decrease it, letting the arm get straighter with practice. Even my "straight" arm is slightly bent at the elbow. It might be hard to see in the video, but it's slightly bent, maybe by a few degrees. The straighter your arm is, the more demand it will put on your outer pec major, anterior deltoid and long head of the bicep. If these muscles aren't ready/strong enough, it could be painful. And if you're experiencing pain in the elbow or shoulder joints, that could be a posture issue (like rounded shoulder) or possibly inflammation (tendonitis in the elbow, for example). Either way, bending the arm and letting it gradually straighten as you build strength in the muscles and tendons will help. Just don't be in a rush. Enjoy the journey and you'll get there :)

      That does add up, since there was a bit of pain in the shoulder back after I was done [guessing that's the "anterior deltoid" you talked about]

    When i tuck my elbows in for a pushup I get a pinch feeling in my right shoulder. I had a rotator cuff injury before and now it is somewhat healed. When i flare out my elbows slightly more I don't get that pinch pain. Any advice ?

      Ernestas Kriauciunas Sorry to hear you had a rotator cuff injury. I recommend laying off the tucked elbows if it's causing a pinching feeling. Too much of that will aggravate the tissue and cause inflammation, making it worse. I'm not sure if your injury was a tear or postural. If it was a tear, you may need surgery (hopefully not the case!) but if it's postural, meaning muscular imbalances are causing your rotators to get pinched by the humeral head during certain movements, that can be corrected with specific exercises and stretches. Either way, I recommend seeing a physical therapist. They're qualified to diagnose and troubleshoot that.
      Not sure how much you are flaring your elbows slightly. If it's just a little, you can keep pursuing the archers. But if you're needing to flare out kind of far (like more than 30 degrees from your body), I'd recommend not training the archers until you get your shoulder issue sorted out. I hope that helps.

      Steve Maxwell says that some ortho doctors have suggested simply doing a routine of hanging from a pull-up bar can strengthen and even cure most shoulder problems.
