@@FordZda the ZF 6HP boxes are geared quite long I know the later 8HPs do 155 in 7th with 8th being an extra gear, the high amount of torque helps the acceleration.

E60 535i wasn't sold in Europe; we had the 540i instead. Both models tested were pre-2005 engine refresh, so M54B22/B25/B30 & N62B44 petrol engines and M57TUD25/D30 diesel engines were the order of the day.

I had a 635d about 10 years ago and it was a cracking engine. Took it drag racing at shakespear raceway and ran 13.2 secs standing 1/4 with a boot full of camping gear, fat lad in the seat and 30c outside.
I have a theory that this was filmed in 2004 and is actually a leftover from series 5. Mainly because of the registration plates, weather and reference to the Mitsubishi EVO 8 400 (which appeared late in series 5) and Ferrari 360 (even though the 430 was in the previous episode)

Shouldn’t flat out floor a diesel car. Keep it between 1500-3500 rpm and you should have enough grunt in any gear to trouble the petrol equivalent while doing the double the mpg of a petrol.
I have identical looking car except mines the far better 2008 lci and I love it wanted one for a long time hard to get in mint nick and low miles high spec but after 2 yrs looking at bad ones I got one !

If I was still at my old job (i used to fo 35 miles each way), one of these would be perfect. However, I now work around a mile and a half away from home, so diesel’s no good.
Fun fact: Diesel engines have lower rpm limits right? Petrol has more rpm. More rpm equals faster pistons. And the petrol brother didn’t win bc the engine was bigger (wich was kinda true) it won bc it more rpm. Thank you for your time.
Well both of my cars, a 2004 Chrysler Grand Voyager and a 2009 Chrysler Sebring are diesels and I am more than happy with their performance. The engines really developed pretty well
If the Stig had been driving the diesel, the diesel would’ve won, despite the comparison petrol car being so loaded in the petrol car’s favour. The newer Diesel engines would rinse that petrol version.
@@kylemooney3415 for now its very good, i Got it for 2 years and for the most part just doing normal maintenance, Oil, filters, swirl flaps remove, and dpf remove and its running like hell no problems so far, most important its previous owner, you buy good one and take care of it and you will be very happy :)

I live in the U.S and have the 335d diesel. It’s a great car. We also got the newer 535d with the n57 diesel, and the 328d with the n47, plus a couple suv. Definitely not nearly as many as Europe obviously which sucks.
Clarkson, the undisputed king of the FAKE videos and reviews. Nobody said about TYRES of each car, not to mention the RAIN makes as the most toque to become lack of grip at all. More than that, on stright lines is OBVIOUSLY for any human which use any bit of intelligence that car with MORE POWER will accelerate faster, but NOT the car with more TORQUE. That v8 was specially choosen as having A LOT more power and slightly even LIGHTER. TG= FT.
Completely unfair comparison. Not only should it have been a 530i but also 2 drivers of similar ability. Stig would've won in the 535d if he'd been in that.
A diesel, if maintained and used properly, can last. Diesels are not made for urban use, especially when you add in the EGR and DPF systems, though removing these resolves the issue about 80% of the way (we disregard pollution here, we're talking strictly about reliability, though if there was a reliable solution to make a diesel clean and usable in the city, I'd gladly do it). A diesel comes into its own on long journeys under constant speed and high load. That's when it has enough energy and heat to remove all of the soot from its valves, injectors and wherever else soot likes to deposit down the exhaust.
the n57 or s or z are all reliable if the oil changes are done regularly on 8k km or thereabouts also changing the rods and oil pump it's pretty much all you gotta do, not talking abt EGR and DPF, those are a simple delete electronically and you're good to go (cause like wth, you get a clogged dpf and then have to go ahead and clean it by revving it and take out all that smoke in the air) other than these, it's as reliable as a merc w123 diesel
2003-2005 530i [231] was similar to 530d [218]. 2004-2007 535d put out 272 PS / 560 Nm which only rivalled the non-existent N62B36 V8-powered 535i (272 PS / 360 Nm). Another way of looking at it is the 545i and 535d were flagship petrol and diesel models at the time.
