@0972q8 it was great when it came out. JC was overexaggerating how difficult it was to use. The infotainment and iDrive system was fantastic and easy to use. The sat nav could be turned off. He changed the station and the volume button is on the left of the wheel. And the indicators do self-cancel!
@@64bakes This episode was filmed in early 2005 and at that time iDrive was full of bugs and inconvenient settings. Only later BMW fixed most of them during regular service updates.
@@GURken I think they changed the iDrive system from the earlier version, and this 5 would have had a later revision of it. The E65 7 series had a fantastic iDrive system (circa 2003).
Legend has it that 10 years later, Jeremy is still trying to decide how long the headlights should stay on.
Better he be keeping himself focused on that, keep his eyes trained on that menu, so that he may never lay eyes on a later Pig-snout BMW. We all long for the days when this was "ugly," not to mention "overcomplicated" or "had too many annoying features."

BMW has always made some good looking cars and some really fugly ones. It was true then and it's true now. The 5 series that replaced this one actually looked much better.

TheIceWarrior ... yes, and it turned out to influence all matter of automobiles, no? I think this is the first car Chris Bangle designed for BMW but I'm probably wrong. I know people here on the west coast of Canada hated the styling at first, but grew to like it (if not love it).
In 2017, this car looks like something that was designed in 2016 at the earliest. It just looks fresh. Which is not something you can cay about contemporary Audis.
17 years later and 19 (nineteen!) years after the e60's debut it looks more or less like cars produced today. That's remarkable.
it's kinda reson why people called it ugly (I was one of them). It was just very very different from what you could see on the streets back then. Futuristic but not in the sci-fi level, but in kind of industrial design level futuristic. Looking at audi and merc from 2003, these looks old as hell, when with e60 on some nice oem 18-19 inch wheels you could trick non-cars person to think it's fresh car, from outside and inside (where only infotaiment system could snitch you out lol)
Too bad even the money saved on Alfa could do the same and better, because in Alfa radio works normally and you can turn the sat nav off.

Very true. There's a cookie cutter design that the manufacturers seem to fall back on. Nobody thinks outside the box. The few sedans left , and most of the SUVs are looking too much alike.

My dad has a e60, it has 2 modes.. The first one only blinks like 4 times, the other ones turn off when you start going straight again.
I drive an E60 530i. When I first got the car, I was so confused as to how to turn the indicators off.
You just slightly tap in the same direction you started to blink in, in order to turn it off.
MultiTerpen i have an e60 . It blinks 3 times.
FBI Surveillance I can confirm that. I drive an 09 M5 and yes, it's 3 times with a half flick of the indicator. It's meant to be used for lane changes

@@adams7405 I have my 2007 E63 M6 nearly 10 years now it's a Jekyll and Hyde car if ever there was one , super luxurious and an out and out hot rod when the afterburners are fully lit.I also own a 2018 F80 M3 and while that is a fabulous car my all time favourite is my M6 and with only 26k miles on it , it's like new ! I agree with you 100% !

It sounds almost like an F1 car, which is great and all but it isn't to everyone's taste. More so to people who buy a large 4 door family car like this. The fact that the car sounds and drives so unlike what you would expect this type of car to is what makes it special, but rationally this type of engine does not suit this type of car at all, it really belongs in something much smaller and lighter with probably only two seats.
Top Gear bullshiting like always... They deliberately turned the volume down when he accelerated..just after saying that the engine sounds like a diesel. And then he whines about satnav and blinkers... that was the worst top gear moment that i have seen

The great thing about this car is I just drove a 2008 M5 for the first time in 2019, and all the computer crap STILL seems incredible. I was still surprised by the crazy suspension etc

Jeremy Clarkson and co. have always despised anything to come out of Germany. They know it's usually the benchmark of automobiles, but he was digging deep in part one for flaws. Even before watching the second Top Gear/Fifth Gear/Top Gear has never given the Germans a fair shake.

The design of this car really comes into it's own as the years go on. It still looks so fresh and lithe, it makes the W211 Mercedes E Class look desperately bland and boring.

To clear up some.. lies about the M5.. first off, he didn't press volume up, Volume on a BMW is a (+/-). He pressed to change preset stations. Next, the indicator DOES self-cancel after 3-blinks. There is two levels to it. Slight press for 3-blinks or full press for constant blinking, which cancels after 25* degree turn of the wheel.

Now... You are correct. But the change preset is definitely on the wrong side. The volume should be on the right hand side. I've owned mine for a year now and still do this every so often

I personally think its the most beautiful M5 of all. Evil eye in the rear, Angel eye up front, the curves on the body, the V10 melody...

So many corrections to be made. As an M5 owner, this review makes ME seem stupid for owning this car which is unfair. For starters, its a beautiful car and I have never heard anyone put the words ugly and M5 in the same sentence. Second, its actually not a "shouty" car at all. Compare the hood of the E92 M3 to the M5 and you'll see what I mean. The hood is the same as one from a 528i, and the tiny decklid spoiler is barely noticeable; if anything the M5 is TOO subtle. Third, if you flick the turn signal halfway it will cancel itself after 3 blinks (or less if you change the settings in iDrive). Next, he makes it sound as if Sat/Nav is always on. She only speaks if you input a destination which, come on, half the time if we are lost its easier to just use our phones! And lastly, I have never ever had the steering wheel volume button switch stations. He obviously hit the wrong button. The left side of the steering wheel switches through presets in which he could've just pressed the down button to go back to the previous station. With that said, I will be making a few videos about the E60 ownership from an owners point of view (DD) since there seems to be a lot of negativity about it on RUclips that needs to be cleared up. So subscribe if you want, because the M5 is a fantastic car for the money!

if you buy this car you won't be stupid enough to change the rod bearing every 60,000 miles but it looks like you are the other stupids who don't want to compromise anything but can latterly give up everything like comfort and safety if it is a honds civic... @@lyte561 Well, yeah mine too. Its not a M car but I'm very happy with it. Its just that cars are complicated machines and can have design flaws which popup later in their lifecycle. This is one such unfortunate occurence on a, which I think, is a beautiful car. Teslas are great too in their own right, I mean no one took EVs seriously before they came along. Just that I kindof hate their pretentious fan boys who think they are better than everyone else, ha ha

Everytime I see an E60 M5 I always envy the owner even after 15 years. It resembles a character that that none other series have. Try park next to the new F90 and you still find the E60 looks great after so many years. Hope many enthusiast will restore them as years pass many diminishing tho.

And I personally think this M5 is one of the best BMW cars after all these years.

I owned a 2010 M5. The gear box is not jerky at low speeds if you take your foot of the gas while you shift. It remains one of the best cars ever. Except the 12.5mpg but it’s still worth it

You could say that 3 times and it would not be enough. Everyone seems to have a cousin or a friend whose E60 M5 blew its motor thanks to the famed rod-bearing issue.
Ingaz here in russia we have a youtuber called Davidich. Back in the day he had E60 M5 called Shadow, you can google it. He changed his gearbox 6 (!!) times or so 😂 He said „who cares, gearbox and some engine parts are just like brake calipers on this car - i buy them every month”. So yeah, you can not make me bealive that E60 is a reliable car. IS-F is reliable, E60 - not even close.

I've owned dozens of cars, and my e60 m5 was one of my favorite cars. Repair bills sucked, but the power and ride quality were actually enjoyable.
Despite its flaws, I think it looks gorgeous! Specially the wheels!!

The Indicator issue might be why no BMW Driver uses Indicators
first off, it has 507 hp not 400 as jeremy said. Second, you can turn off the navigation voice, on the left hand on the map there is list of different things you can do. the top one is the speaker/sound for navigation, if you press it, her voice is off. Third, its not m5 logo on every panel. fourth, when he was trying to turn up the volume, he pressed the radio channel changer. And fifth, you do not have to fiddle in the i Drive menu to go back. you simply press the oposite button to change back to original radio channel and the use the arrows on the other side of the steering wheel to turn the music up or down.

It IS a pain in the arse to turn off the Sat Nav. I have a 530i E60 (owned for 4 1/2 years now). You have to go into the menu and find, somewhere, "Navigate" and tick that off.
Mine is the poverty-spec system (no map, just stupid arrows), so it's maybe different.
The indicators were also a pain in the arse before I got used to them. It seemed impossible to cancel them.
iDrive IS bad design with regards to these items. The software designers should have made the items intuitive, with the navigation On/Off being easy to access instead of buried away.
I have noticed that later E60 models have had the direct-access buttons placed back in the car (as in the E39), which lets you go straight to radio, CD etc. without having to fight your way through the iDrive menu (although I have set one of the steering wheel buttons to toggle through audio source).

To switch off the navigation voice; You view the map, and while viewing, as full screen view, you will see a tab viewing various options. As one of those options, you can switch off the voice. To turn up the volume, the two indicators are on the left hand side of the steering wheel. This video is bias. The M5 sounds AMAZING when ignition fires & car looks beast with all black matte paint! Also preforms outstandingly... Stupid Benz fanboy mate.....

@@adnanjusic4890 and that’s your opinion, but the general consensus is the 5 series was hated originally for not being aggressive enough, but aged very well. Even at the time people thought audis were bland. And at that point audi was still known as the brand you settled for if you couldn’t afford a merc or bmw. Only reason the Audi aged well is because it was so conservatively styled. M5 still looks brand new exterior wise, rs6, not so much, still looks nice to me, but doesn’t look new.

I've always thought this was the ugliest period for the 5 series. I hated them until I drove one.
I had one for a few days and it completely seduced me. The handling dynamics were sublime.The engine, steering, braking...all top notch. The electronics were indeed awful...the owner's manual was about a thousand pages long. But driving that thing was absolutely wonderful and the best part is when you're in the driver's seat you don't have to look at it !

I was going to say to look out for what came later, but looking up the M5 it looks like they actually stayed decent, never got the pig-snout grille the other BMWs got, evaded the barn-size mostly-fake grille trend that has plagued the past few years of automotive design.
@@quillmaurer6563I dont know what you mean by this. No grille is fake, grilles are nowhere big enough for the power output and are actually good considering some m3s are tuned to 1300hp on stock internals.
You’re just nostalgic. in 10-20 years ull be nostalgic for the new m3/m4. I grew up with f80 m3 but I still like new m3/m4. Old people dont change their preferences and will always hate new things.
@@blocksource4192 A lot of recent-model cars have gigantic grilles that are mostly blocked off, have ribs or egg-crate texture but it's attached to a solid piece of plastic, no air goes through. Only a very small portion of the aesthetic grille area is actually open to allow air through to the radiator. There are some exceptions, including some BMWs, that actually use and need all the grille area, but for late model cars as a whole there's a lot of ugly absurdity. Enough to make people question even cars that do actually use it.
Also, I'm not just based on nostalgia - those things you mention are from before I had much interest or awareness of automobiles. I'm 29 years old. Some late-model cars look great, a lot of older ones looked awful. Though granted a lot of the awful-looking older cars have simply been forgotten, people think old stuff was better because they only remember or see the best of that era (even - or especially if they weren't alive themselves to see that timeframe and see only what those who were see worthy of remembering) and compare it with all of what's offered now. However, I think good looks are timeless, regardless of when a car was made, though also a matter of taste, some people like different things. Some trends from some eras are just ugly, at least in my mind. Personally I like elegant and form-follows-function, so I'm not keen on over-stylized aesthetics or components that are non-functional (or partially non-functional like the mostly-blocked-off grills), and I like sleek rather than aggressive. Some eras of cars are of this aesthetic, while others aren't.

Boy my dad had this car and when I drove it, it really is complicated. The hood is too long and wide so for reversing your car is quite difficult. The signaling that Jeremy talked about is also true you really don't know how to turn if off and I could really go on to be honest. Is a good car not incredible

No, he's just being entertaining. he knows that he can't turn off the navigation voice by shouting, and even so he shouts at her. I love that. On the other hand he always has a point, even though hyperbolises everything. M5 was born in very simple way: comfortable autobahn cruiser + enormously powerful engine, which made it as practical as a classic hot hatch. By making these cars complicated they take the focus from the point, why you own such a car, and that's the immensly powerful engine and the speed of the thing. And they also made them ridiculously expensive, which means normal people who just want a bit more powerful car can't afford them. The same with A45 AMG or RS3, both of which can cost 3 times the basic car from which they are derived. That's absurd.

I'm a fan of the Jeremy & Co. But, when he was complaining about how the volume button changes the song, he was hitting the wrong buttons (just noticed this).

Ive owned this car for 8 years and it is still as beautiful as ever.. the naturally aspirated v10 still has that beautiful note.

@@SteveSideris..2k02 I personally think the i3 is the worst car bmw has ever made, after the e46 compact, those cars are horrible when it comes to appearence, my favorite car tho, it's probably the e92 335i, the N54 engine has a lot of tuning potencial, and it can be the best engine they ever made after the v10 on the e60 M5 but the 335i is a lot cheaper, so that makes it my favorite bmw car, and I find it beutiful
2020 here. Sadly this amazing car is a nightmare to own. BMW doesn’t make it at all desirable to even look at one that’s out of warrantee (obviously they all are now) cause parts are expensive. Labor is absurd money to get those parts installed properly. It’s sad when luxury manufacturers do this. Once an amazing vehicle. Now an undesirable money pit no one wants.

Clarkson didn’t realise that the volume was on that left-hand side of the steering wheel, the indicator stalk is actually incredibly easy to use, the simplistic now extremely basic functions for transmission and differential is laughable and the ease of use with the old idrive system. Hasn’t he ever used B&O....

You have to consider that at the time, the looks of this car were pretty damn weird. We can say that it was ahead of its time, but at the moment it wasn't all that good looking

When I saw an E60 for the first time as a kid, it was mind blowing. It was unlike any other car I had seen, looked so futuristic. I still love this car and I'd like to own one in the future, hopefully an M5 if I can afford it.

This car is from a different time. This is the car that came out post LCI e46. Nobody really understood just how much of a masterpiece the e60 really was. No need to blame Clarkson.
