WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I love John's ability to keep focus on the big picture and steer the conversation back.
A man of few words, but they are often words of wisdom.
Matt being extra mellow didn't last long...
Haha, yeah, I noticed that too, although, in all fairness to Matt, it doesn't pay to be mellow when it comes to debating theists generally speaking, my own experience tells me that when you are too soft, they will walk all over you, because, in all honesty, some (not all in fairness) of these Bible believers will sense weakness and will tread all over any non-believer that they can see weakness in to try and get them to convert, it's because they are so desperate to defend their beliefs and push them onto others, they will home in on anything that will help them to score a point, this is one of the problems with debating theists, especially religious theists, you're dealing with desperate people who can't afford to play fair so they will play dirty.
ralow702 no it didn’t.. he tried I guess
I don't blame him. I enjoy his perspective because of his past. You can't bullshit a former apologist.
That unicorn thing is frustrated as hell
Can't blame him for it . Having to reason with this parade of delusional people .
I give caller Billy some credit. He's consistently a tool whenever he calls in
Chuckle
Billy is a jack-wad...
He lost his shit on Talk Heathen this week. The cheese totally slid off of his cracker.
Completely entertaining
Billy was painful. This is what happens when one stops thinking. He’s just making unsupported or unknowable assertions.
@Hillary's emails to Lorne yes they are a sub-species of more primitive thinkers
Absolutely Hilarious!!!!!! Who would have thought the answers to how the universe was created would have been solved by Billy from Texas? On an internet phone in show of all things? He should bring his findings to a University.
With every year it gets more frustrating..I salute you guys
It gets more frustrating for you sir because you follow after people who are spiritually dead and blind! Like Jesus said in the book of Matthew, let the blind lead the blind and both will fall in to a ditch! Matt Dillahunty is a blind atheist leading ignorant people like himself in to a ditch! Doesn't surprise me though given the fact of depravity that this man speaks from!
@@larrycraddock3063 matt dilahunty will never sit back and watch a child get raped. If god was real thats all he does all day.
God does not sit back and watch children get raped sir! The depraved people who reject Christ sit back and watch. We are to do the work of the Lord which means we as a nation of so-called ethical people we overturn roe vs wade and stop deliberatley killing innocent babies. When Jesus went in to the temple and overturned the tables of the tax gatherers He used a whip to do it! If we would apply those same principles today and drive out the gutless cowards who do things like that there would be no such thing as child molesters running loose in our society!
It get's more frustrating for you because you continue to believe the lies of Satan! Atheism has never benefited anyone and it never will!
@@larrycraddock3063 You should really look Deep inside yourself if you think it is About "Benefit". But i guess Religion is selfish.
I would like to know Matt's blood pressure before and after a call from Billy from Texas.
I need to check my bp listening (before and after) to these callers, OMG
Before: 124/82
After: 350 PSI
Matt at his absolute best during the last few calls. Damn he’s good.
Re: Billy’s call about the appearance of design indicating god, I remind such people that a snowflake looks designed under microscopic examination, yet we have an explanation for its formation that doesn’t require Yahweh.
How did Zeus become Yahweh?
@Zeal!
Thank you, another question please.
Jesus turned water into wine. His water pot/stone jar/pitcher, that he used, is in the constellation of Aquarius. How many trillions x trillions of gallons of wine do you think this thing would hold???????
@Zeal!
Since we already know that one of the names of Jesus is Aquarius, "the man" and is the only "the man" in the entire bible, do you think that we should hold him responsibe for the great flood? Seems he was very careless with his water pitcher and pissed off Zeus so badly that he got kicked out of heaven.
@Zeal!
Since Jesus is the culprit that got himself kicked out of heaven for his "sin," what do you think of preachers who say this made us all sinners, and we can only be saved by accepting Jesus the sinner as our savior?????
juicer67 regarding snowflakes and so on.......it always seems to me that the notion of ‘complexity’ implying a Designer is very much counter-intuitive. Presumably THE Creator (apologies for that one lol) would not have the restraints and/or challenges of raw materials, foreknowledge, technique etc. to which mortal designers (i.e. the only designers we’ve yet seen) are subject. Thus The Creator would have no need for complexity being able (presumably) to create everything in as simple and un-complex a fashion as they saw fit. Why make everything so damned complicated?!
Matt, just thank you.
Chris: please stop with ya-know, ya-know, ya-know. False beliefs got us an overgrown toddler with his finger on the nuke button. Not benign.
It doesn’t even “appear designed” to me. It appears like the product of natural processes.
This. This sentence should end discussions of intelligent design.
It's designed to look that way /s
Matt the Man of incredible intelligent and honesty. His perspective on reality is astounding and life-changing.
So the famous James Randi one million prize fund for demonstrating the supernatural was shut down... I heard a rumor that one of James Randi's apprentices (Banachek) was in talks with a network to produce a TV show based on the that same goal: "one million prize fun for proof of supernatural". Wouldn't that be cool!
I know Matt can be strong in his passions and how he presences what he thinks but I respect that .. i also really like him, I like Tracie and Jen as well .. there all so different and smart
I love these shows... I've been an atheist for about a year now and it comforts me to know that I'm not alone. There is so much common sense being shown on this show and the other related to this one that it has become my go to program on RUclips. Excellent info and excellent methods of being able to respond to theists. With that being said, I posed a question on one of those end times claim videos and I didn't get an answer that would suffice. What I asked was this. True story, by the way. So, we have an 8 year old girl, who shall be nameless because of age, that was raped. She survived by shear luck. After months of breaking the shell of fear and distrust, she finally tells her story in a way that seemed like a question. She said that before the rape ornthe act of it that she prayed to God to save her. She said that she screamed the prayer aloud until it felt that her lungs would burst. She did that until she felt an even greater pain between her legs... I asked this theist what justification there was for this all powerful God to dismiss this baby's cries for help. What is there to learn from that experience? How do you tell this child any thing that would comfort her? His response was that Jesus was put on earth and through no fault of his was tortured and blah, blah, blah... ( I spaced out while reading his response but keep reading, it gets better.) And so he continued with this fact that God has been replaced with evolution that morals have gone and... blah, blah, blah. (More zoning out because a real answer was consistently evaded). LOL! Any way, I responded by calling him a coward. He skirted a real answer to protect a God who doesn't exist to justify why a 8 year old baby was allowed to be raped. I didn't write what I was feeling to him but I was absolutely disgusted. I just called him a coward for an equally cowardly response. These shows have helped me respond to theist folk with out sounding condescending or disrespectful and when they cant seem to pull me to the word of their Fantasy, they keep throwing bible verses that evades justification for the topic being spoken about. Like, my conversation with the theist who couldn't find a justification for a God allowing an 8 year old being raped by a monster.
Sometimes don't bother trying to reason...Sometimes when somebody is brainwashed all their lives and surrounded by people like them there is no way of reasoning !

Jesse Riker yes that’s true but I like how Matt puts it....he’s not trying to change the person he’s speaking too, but to other people who are on the fence and listening. So it’s not to the person but to the audience.⭐️👍🏼
It's not for the callers, it's for the theist that's listening who has enough reason to not call in and get embarrassed. That theist might also value reason enough that reason can reach them.

That last caller Paul was so obviously uncomfortable with the reality of him not having a justified reason to think his beliefs are true it's extremely sad.
Brilliant episode - many thanks! :0)
~ 1:23:00 *CANDIDATE EXPLANATIONS!* A great and useful term Matt added to my skeptic toolbox. This may be the earliest instance I saw of him using it. I've wondered. Caught the reference early in season 23. But this predates that. And it's ensconced in one of his good summary sessions. Woot.
More Dillahunty gold: He exposes Billy as nothing more than a flip-flopping, tapdancing, talk-from-seventeen sides of his mouth at the same time lying christian nit wit, and then nails the lover of scripture-quotes Paul with the repeated identification of the biblical "Heads I win, tails you lose" hypocrisy. What Dillahunty is really getting good at is nailing and holding the feet to the fire, are these christians who try to sneak points back into the discussion where there has been a agreed-upon nullification of that point previously in the discussion.
i would greatly enjoy having a disagreement with Matt Dillahunty. normally, when you have two brain cells to rub together, discussing _anything_ (be it religion, politics, economics, etc.) with other people becomes a huge pain, because more often than not it's just a screaming contest, baseless assertions and refusal to engage in an actual conversation in any meaningful capacity. Matt, on the other hand, seems like the kind of guy who you can disagree with on something, and actually learn something useful in the process - because first and foremost, he "nails" and holds _his own_ "feet to the fire" and does not allow himself to make bad arguments, so whatever he says, you can be sure that he thought it through and will not try to bullshit you.
Theists appear to spend an inordinate amount of time fixating on the appearance of design, and very little time on the infinite regression which results from the question, "who designed the designer?" That question gets swept under the rug.
True believers seem to not be able or willing to take their reasoning one step further. It's like their brains go "Stop before you ruin it!"
That's where the magic comes in.
@@Berbs73 IKR. I prefer 3rd level magic user spells like Lightning bolt or Fireball.
It's almost like asking a flat earther who denies gravity while things fall down and not some other direction. Sometimes they just don't even seem to understand the question.
Matt's going to stay calm? Hahaha! Really? Never do that Matt, that would be boring. The things that I love about Matt and Aron the most is they don't take any bullshit.
1:20:40 *Candidate Explanations.* I think, watching this when published, was the first time I ever heard that term. It blew my brain. The label for the concept of noticing and identifying the various possible factors. It's a key to multiple logic tools. Avoiding false dichotomy, etc.
Since then I noted Matt using it in an older video. But I'm pretty sure this was when it first registered.
From a label, one can unlock connected tools and ideas.
Production looks great now. I like the new professional platform. Keep growing! America 🇺🇸 needs you! 🥇
America is not the only country who needs the Atheist Experience, we desperately need it down under.Unfortunately we have the same nonsensical religious stupidity as well. The trouble with religion is it spreads like a bloody virus. Don't forget bacteria and viruses take dominion over the earth.
I had a friend that had magnet necklaces that supposedly fix your heart rate. He claimed that the "energy" would get low if you used it and to recharge, he would wear the necklace, go outside barefoot, and rub his feet in the grass. Wasn't trying to be rude, but I actually laughed in his face.
I like John Iacoletti as a co-host.
At 1hour 45min Matt says the most profound thing I've heard from him.
yes a person popping in and out of reality is natural
Billy's brain pops in and out of reality and thats also natural.
As someone who experiences an immense amount of chronic pain, the right weed kills the pain better than opiates can. Trust me my pain led me down a dark road with opiates but since weed became legal I bought some weed vape juice and that shit is truly amazing. It helps me sleep a whole night and during the day my opiates do the best they can but being able to sleep 8 to 10 hours a night is truly wonderful.
If you accept the God model and accept that DNA is 'designed' by God then doesn't that mean you accept everything is designed by God? That means God designed cancer and deadly germs and birth defects and all the horrible things we have to live with.. Doesn't that mean God is a terrible entity that we spend millions of man hours trying to counter?
....or, if he didn't and these are "bugs" in his design, wouldn't that make him incompetent? especially since he can't fix it after all this time?
Fundamentalists will probably argue that all of the nasty stuff appeared after the fall of mankind.
But something something Satan which God also made damn
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?

Your logic will be dispelled with the "mysterious ways" argument. Followed by "Whew, my crazy beliefs are safe, thank you Jesus"
I've watched dozen of shows, and Matt really likes to hear himself talk. A lot. Still awesome.
First caller is full of it. He is talking about himself. He was just afraid to admit it and be embarrassed.
He is a repeat caller who calls in with new 'claims', and strangely always agrees with how ridiculous the claims. I'm not sure if he understands the sceptic position by now.
Yeah, the old “I have a friend....” line followed by a string of nonsense e caller has dismissed as utter bullshit and then defends to some extent.
Every time Billy says "dude" I want to slam my head against the wall.
Love to see stats on people who have " rethunk" the many fallacies they were taught.
Hi Matt. Great show as always. Zeke here from N.Z. Great to see that there are parts of the U.S that are discussing the big issues and their rationale...or lack off. I have been off the net for awhile ...heard that you may be coming to New Zealand for a few seminars (for the want of a better word) ...has it happened already or are you on tour way down-under. I have a "cringeometer" when it comes to healing ppl with anything from crystals to turmeric to the laying on of hands, other than the the placebo effect its simply a rort . I recently had somewhat of a set to with a pharmacist regarding their selling of para-medical products, mainly because a woo woo sales person was there promoting some homeopathic sleep tablets and their amazing properties. When I chimed in and offered to eat the whole bottle to prove they were nothing but sugar pills, the sales person AND the chemist become defensive, indignant and prepared to call an ambulance if I did. Me laughing didn't help the situation. This ended up with a few customers siding either way. I find it abhorrent that chemists (supposedly rational educated professionals) sell anything from crystals to turmeric to customers. Whats even scarier is that the public are so willing to shed their hard earned dollars without evidence of the efficacy of a product. So for me its not so much ignorance from the public....its the deceit and lack of integrity in a capitalist environment Cheers Chap.
Ive been to your lovely country. You guys love your Crystals.
1:15:16 Matt's response.😂
You are wrong, Matt. Medicinal use of marijuana is justified. I am an MD. I don't use it myself, and I can't prescribe it because I practice in a State that doesn't allow it.
Billy's absolute desperation to "prove" a deity makes me almost feel for him. A couple of his calls are difficult to listen to solely due to his desperation.
Crystals have power, if you throw them against someones head.
I used to travel through the northwestern coast of north America making and selling wire-wrapped crystal pendants to tourists and visitors to the beaches. People would often start asking/telling me about crystal power and healing, and I'd want to avoid losing a sale, while also expressing that I didn't believe my jewelry would give anyone special energy, or healing power.
I was the only non-wooish, superstitial, spiritualist I knew in the traveling hippy crowd, it was bizarre at times.
thanks Paul for being so convincing LOL
I have epilepsy, and I've bitten my tongue many times, bad enough so that my tongue is currently scarred. It's an unbearable pain than lasts for one to two weeks. And it's a pain that not even vicodin can take care of. Once, after I had a seizure and bit my tongue, I was offered a marijuana lozenge. The pain was gone. And it wasn't just not caring about the pain. It was gone. So you can't tell me there's no evidence that marijuana doesn't act as a valid pain killer.
The problem is that the anti-cannabis stigma stops people/governments from doing the studies needed so that people that need it can get access to it worldwide. I wish you the best of luck and health. Chris’s question basically boils down to “hey if it were beneficial to believe false things would you be ok with it,” and the answer is “sure so if reality were different than it seems to be now would I feel differently about it?” And the answer is of course yes but please demonstrate a situation where it’s a net positive to believe false things, bc that’s the battleground of this question
“If the universal constants were different, the universe wouldn’t be here at all.”
Is essentially,
“If things were different, they’d be different.”
Yup.
Crystals are still around in every electronic device to keep time.
I'm not getting your point. That was just a single statement. Not sure specific thing you're referring to, or point you think the single statement makes. Do you figure that lends ANY credence to "healing power" or "chi" or "polarizing the iron molecules in your blood" or...blah blah blah?
Their characteristics have been studied, well documented and harnessed. For electronics, watches, etc. Nothing proven (as far as I know), re "healing". Effects on blood iron: disproved. Etc.

It's almost like some people can't analyze another person's view without trying to force it to fit specific label first. The people who do that seem to be very rigid in their thinking and can't easily accept that not everything fits into the neat boxes or labels talked about in philosophy textbook. The person who called in about morality is a good example of this. Instead of just taking Matt's explanation of his view on morality he tried to find a term to describe it and it just seemed to complicate things unnecessarily.
“If you believe things that are wrong it leads to other flawed beliefs. Because beliefs don’t live in a vacuum.” So true Matt. This issue is what gets us atheists so worked up. And rightfully so. Theism is only one of possibly many manifestations of a flawed mind.
Chris ‘struggos’ with ‘peepo’. Same dude. Same. I too struggo with peepo.

You ever stand in a lightning storm with a rock just to feel something?
Hi there, a follower from Sweden, a rather non religious County, however as an atheist I have trouble finding a community over here, if ppl here say they're not religious they still believe in the New age stuff like crystals and other shit... I'm real happy that I found you guys to find a place för reason... With my life story I can't find a reason (I won't get into details) to Believe in A God, I Only Believe in Good or bad Humans.... Believe me, I've met my share of bad humans and NO sign of a Good God......
I've never seen a more clear example of the "heads I win, tails you lose." mentality than the last caller. He has absolutely no knowledge of logic, and seems to work purely on emotion and what the bible says. He might be a nice guy, but if he goes around teaching other people to think that way, I wouldn't necessarily call him a good guy.
If you call something a categorical error, and it isn't, then you have made a categorical error.
