SHOW NOTES
Hi, folks! We’re in weird times with a pandemic turning its ugly head at us, so Matt starts the show by explaining what the ACA is doing. The tl;dr version: The ACA has issued Defcon levels regarding how many and which people we allow into the Freethought Library, and International Atheist Day events have been moved to online-only, as the Austin capitol has officially closed to the public.
Before we get into Don’s failures, we highlight people taking advantage of fear around the coronavirus. Jim Baker has weird silver supplements, Alex Jones has...anti-coronavirus toothpaste? What? And Matt Dillahunty has F BOMBS!
What’s this week’s failure of Christianity? Well, God keeps hiding from us! He won’t answer our calls, he seems to be answering a bunch of people’s calls with different information, and he won’t heal amputees! WHY?! whywontgodheal... (Also Matt puts his Christian hat on...and an atheist hat...and another hat.)
Our first caller shares some ground with Matt, as he lives near Matt’s old church! Tom has some questions, as he feels he’s struggling out of his faith, so he runs some thoughts by our hosts about how he’s deconverted so far (and whether the reasons are good), and what his current questions are. (He does something fun at the end of his call.
CJ in North Carolina is curious to ask Matt what he thinks about his upcoming debate with David Wood, and that gives us some insight into Matt’s debate preparation.
“God is to the universe as zero is to math.” I don’t understand this argument, but maybe you will when Hassan in California presents it for us...or maybe it’s just a bad argument.
Luke in Arizona asks why we (atheists? The hosts?) aren’t nihlists, and Matt explains that, to some extent, he is a nihilist.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Where can I check the schedule so I can join the next live stream
I think I recognized that fucking asshole Luke who called almost 2 years, something about the difference between “atheist” cultures and “christian” cultures, and probably one time asking about (well actually, being a nuisance) about where do morals come from. The name and state might be the same, and from the sound of it, still a complete shithead.
I find it to be absurd that morals and purpose has to, by definition, come from a “god”.
Those people really painfully undermine humanity’s relevance in the universe. We’re still learning about the universe, and yet we think a being called “god” can be recognized, has to be acknowledged and worshiped daily in spite the lack of evidence of actually showing such a being? It’s just astonishing how self-absorbed humanity is.
Probably it has been done. I would love to see the program ,parsing logic of his debates with results.
Thanks
Don: Let's stop with the meta-discussion.
Nicely done.

I don’t know how to feel when Matt spoofs being a Christian better than most real Christians who call in
What is a real Christian. There are so many sects that claim to have the truth and attack each other that all that stands out is the silliness. Only emotionally needy people fall for the Christian deception it no longer holds water with intelligent people.
Joe Reyes I’d say a real Christian is someone who claims to follow the teachings of Christ as they understand it. Anyone who “secretly is an atheist” might have to be included too. I’m not a mind reader, so generally as long as I don’t have a reason to think someone is lying about beliefs I’ll say they are whatever religion they claim to be.
Matt currently isn’t one, but he was one when he believed. Him being able to jokingly do a better job defending his faith than many callers do when they seriously try, that’s what caught my attention.
I agree Christianity has silly aspects, and certainly that gets highlighted on the show, but it still seems like a simple matter to define what a Christian is
Feel like you have discovered a rare gemstone.
@GodCreatedNature yawn, troll zzzzzz
Matt is so effective in this role that I was just making arrangements to send him money that could be better spent on food and rent. Then Matt revealed that he does not have a bank account. Sorry, Matt.
Someone must have slipped a happy pill into Matt's coca-cola today as I've never seen him smile and laugh this much before
@soli Sanchez That usually has the opposite effect.
soli Sanchez ....I reckon you could be right. I hope so.
It's the coronavirus pandemic. It's convincing theists around the globe that God is fake.
@Barthelemy You grow up. You're the one claiming to have made the greatest scientific discovery of all time. Extraordinary claims like this require extraordinary evidence. Do you really think you've made the greatest scientific discovery of all time? Because that's exactly what you're saying.
@Barthelemy All scientists are asleep? So the people who made your touch screen sensitive liquid crystal display voice recognition phone with wireless internet are asleep? The people who made your car are asleep? The people who made your computer are asleep? The people who send rockets to space are asleep? The people who built boats and aircraft are asleep? the people who build houses and heating and air conditioning are asleep?
Dons laugh gives me strength
I think Don's really bright and that his "failures" are well presented but I'm one of the, I think many, who can't stand his laugh - especially when he's "host" as he tends to be so very flippant with guests. He'e strongest when he plays on Matt - and I mean this from a place of constructive critisim, not attacking or hate.
I love his laugh.
I too get a 100% kick out of Don's off-ish remarks. He's got a special nack at it.
Default Theropod every time he is on, I know I’m going to have a good couple hours bc his laugh makes me so fckin happy lol
Im sorry i hate it..
'Thank you for joining us, all our lines are currently full...'
Yeah, *everyone* is home. You could run this show for a full week straight, and never run out of callers. lol
Omg i was watching past vids of Luke getting owned just last night, now he is getting owned on the show today! God must therefore exist!
Ebiru2387 I don’t think “owned” means what you think it means.
Luke has been calling in for years and every single time he has the same gotcha questions. He’s incapable of talking in good faith. He has his own RUclips channel where he pretends to be an intellectual.
Oh please, what is the channel? This is going to be entertaining.
yo I'm dying here can you please link his channel!!
@@MaXimusD3cimus @Michael Simonelli in a thread below, ArtisticLayman identified as Luke. So that could be the channel,
Even though Hassan and Luke were annoying callers with inflexible beliefs, I learned a lot from those conversations - thanks to Matt's clear explanations. :-)
It's funny how Luke has to pause and think about a simple question of drinking battery acid vs drinking apple juice.
Is that to imply that Matt has flexible beliefs?
@@otterofconfusion3850 It's based on a presumption that atheism/nihilism doesn't justify.
@@ArtisticLayman It's no assumption, it's an objective fact one is better for us than the other, whether you care about your or other's well-being is an assumption that Matt has Happily acknowledged time and tine again.
@@Richard-jm3um "Better" is a value judgement based on an assumption of value, not an objective fact.
The call with Thomas was one of the most impactful and life-changing things I’ve ever heard. Lots of emotions. So, so glad I’m not alone or crazy for leaving this nonsense behind. So thankful for you mind Matt! You’re saving lives!
god DOES regrow lost limbs- but for some strange reason he gave that ability to salamanders and not humans.
You know...part of his brilliant plan.
Lol this made me laugh
@David Valerio 🤣😂🤣
@Warstar not crabs, not most reptiles, and I don't think dolphins make that list either.
And the few reptiles only regrow their tails.
But why aren't we bringing up the few immortal creatures on this planet?
And they don't even have to pray to the god to regrow an appendage. 😉
@Warstar my original comment was all for poking fun- at theists-
It's not that serious guys.
Yesterday my mom (who's accepting of my disbelief) told me that GOD helps those who help themselves.
Well if that qualifies as helping then please give me credit for all the people I've helped around the world by letting them help themselves.
I hate that saying so effing much. Every time a hear it I ask the person "so tell me, how is a child dying of cancer suppose to help themselves?". It's not even a quote from the bible, just made up shit to justify any unjust done to people...you know...the same bs over and over.
I lost my sister three days after she was born, I heard so much BS from believers. My “favorite” was “She was God’s child before she was your mother’s, and He needed her home.” Then why the F allow my mom to carry her to term to have her die three days later?
How anyone could defend that crap is insane.
So... she worships Ben Franklin?
@@AC-gb7do Sorry about your sister :( My friend's Son was killed in a car wreck. There were 3 in car. He was in the back seat, the driver and front passenger lived. At the funeral the priest had the gall to say "God called Ryan home, the other 2 still had tasks to complete on Earth". I was appalled and sickened but what was worse is when I looked over at Ryan's parents I expected them to be angry, nope, they were shaking their heads in agreement. I couldn't believe it, I was hoping I wasn't the only fuming with anger over those words.
@@AC-gb7do I'm sorry your mother (and father presumably) had to go through that loss. Especially mixed up with the emotions of having a new son.
I expect most people who tell kids and others these pacifying lies honestly assume that denial of sad or scary truths and the retreat into any fantasy convenient to the moment is what others will naturally appreciate as well.
And they prob take for granted that whatever words feel more comfortable coming out of their mouths must be what's most healthy for others to hear and believe.
I think in the long term it's healthier for people to learn to grieve and accept the reality we have to live with.
I just love Don and his laugh!!
No no no! His dumbass interrupts with stupid jokes or "have you killed any witches?"
More than that, it never fails that when matt is trying to get a caller to learn something, or to be serious, don asks a completely irrelevant question. Taking the caller out of moment, breaking up the point, ruining build up.
The WORST is when a troll calls in with a prank call or someone pissed off at matt calls in trying to put down the host, etc. Just watch Corey calls. Hes a troll that calls in being a total prick trying to get jokes off or be outrageously mad just as a troll. Don sits there busting up laughing the whole time and all it does is make more trolls call. Don isn't funny and his laugh is stupid.
Matt's points, starting at about 1:21, are one of the best interactions I ever heard between him and a theist caller. I want to quote some of it on my FB page. Christians are ultimately concerned about making it to heaven, by accepting Jesus, NOT making this earth a better dwelling place for humans. Damn, you nailed it Matt!
I love watching a smug theist like Luke calling in and getting rolled
Sad thing is, he won't learn anything from it and instead start getting bitter about atheists.
Somewhere out there lives a man who most likely will not admit that he is Luke's father.
MR KNOW IT ALL
What man admits to anything.
May the force be with you lol.

Define god:
God is the creator of all things.
How do you know?
I just said so.
Look at the creation, to get a hint of the creator
@@homemarketing9811 So you're the creator? I see a comment with your name above it.
Look, here's where you went wrong: _"Look at the creation..."_
You assume creation as fact and you have no reason to think it's even possible to create anything without using already existing matter/energy that already existed. A musician is a creator, but uses ingredients that already exist. We have zero evidence than anything else is even possible. Before you can say: "Look at the creation...", you will have to show that anything was created any other way than by rearranging matter and/or energy. And a god that just rearranges stuff in an already existing universe is hardly what I would call a god. My cat does that and is absolutely all powerful and all knowing within its nature and just like your god, he doesn't sacrifice anything he won't get back.
Home marketing where is the creation?
Hi guys....Discovered your channel through listening to Christopher Hitchens videos. Really love and learning from your reasoning. Take care and best wishes
I agree with David. Plus I should state I'm a strong Hitchens fan myself, pretty sure I've watched all his debates, talks, you name it; and some twice.
But the Atheist Experience is NOT all for Hitchens, actually generally no online atheist area seems to fully go along with Hitchens, AND I feel I know why.
Hitchens was excellent at discussing how theists are just wrong, Mother Teresa was a cruel bitch, and he also made constant classic quotes how he reserves the right to never be kind to any theist's argument ever.
ie Hitchens was right.
BUT, along came recovered theists now atheists, who did not like they were supposedly deluded once, but now recovered. They felt Hitchen's attacks on theists (especially Christianity and Islam) did not help any recovered theist now atheist. If anything the recovered theist was fully against Hitchens for calling them such horrors, when they were merely instructed the wrong thing. How could it be THEIR fault at all.
ie The recovered theist to atheist is like a reformed smoker (tobacco cigarettes). They do NOT admit they were ever faulty/delusional/mistaken (individually), or any derogatory word at all. When CLEARLY they were.
ie Hitchens was right.
And I stand by that claim.
EDIT// However to remain amicable I do blame the church.
@Danny451 Fuentes Non Stamp Collector actually replied to me a few days ago, on a very old vid of his. That was quite good.
@Barthelemy Another claimed Supernatural species just like the non evidence based God claim

There's no special human species part that just popped into existence.
Your dreaming in your heart doesn't make sense!
1. Hearts can't actually dream. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood. These internal organs are kinda disgusting really, BUT they can't think or dream! Thinking and dreaming comes from the brain.
2. Obviously someone has mislead you to think hearts dream or something! If I were you I'd approach them and say: Why did you lie to me (being you) and say my heart has feelings and dreams, when it DOESN'T DO THAT AT ALL!
Bart, the problem is you have been provided fancy poetic words like: Dreams in my heart, and he created life. You can't just CLAIM this without having some reason or evidence. You understand that right? The fact of the matter is all reasoning points away from a 'he' creating anything at all. Didn't you know? I hope you haven't just been believing others claims or verses from an old Arab book? Because that would make you gullible.
Its merely a matter of you asking questions, like:
Wait, why the FUCK do I believe in a God without a shred of damn evidence? No wonder everyone laughs at me (again being you, but you got that). Your words are embarrassing and they have made you look shameful. STOP dreaming (you can still dream by the way) and WAKE UP to reality.
Welcome
Luke is acting a lot more bright than he is. He’s doing the yeah? Yeah? Like he’s actually curious and following what Matt is saying, but then spits some absolute unrelated bs out of his mouth and it’s so damn weird lol.
I thought he had a mini stroke or something.
His responses were not correlating with the previous statements.
He's the same asshole who called in the past and opened with the question, "atheists are immoral, prove me wrong." So much condescension and he has no intelligence to back it up.
His voice and arrogance is like that of G-Man.
Beautiful ending rant, Matt. Thank you.
...and it came to pass that there was a large multitude, and the disciples said to Jesus ‘what shall we do to help these people?’ Then a small boy from the crowd appeared carrying five toilet rolls and two bars of soap, and Jesus blessed them, and distributed them amongst the crowd, so that none were unclean.
Its true! i personally witnessed this in the local Walmart parking lot...
Luke, the obfuscationist of the day award. Theistic morality is the subjective opinion of a theist about the ancient subjective opinions of an imaginary god. The opinions of gods are the opinions of those who made him up. Theists subjectively choose religions, with subjective opinions, that they subjectively like.
Does anyone know the Christian RUclips channel A voice in the desert? When I found out about the true Christian lifestyle it really ruined my faith in Christianity because I would pray and ask forgiveness of my sins everyday and I never got an answer. And now all of a sudden this god has the audacity to ask this shit from me??? Like wtf. But thanks to the the AXP I’ve learned that I’m not alone in atheism. Plus I’m Filipino and most of my country is Christian so it feels kind of awkward being atheist. But just wanted to thank AXP for helping me stay as an atheist.
When I was a believer I started watching A Voice in the Desert, subscribed to it. After awhile (I was still a believer then), I realized it was a load of crap. Typifies everything wrong with Christianity. I unsubscribed.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Don’t tell me to read the context cuz I’ve read the entire gospel. "correct me if i'm wrong, but please let me finish my bullshit until i'm completely wrong."

As soon as anyone uses the Socratic method to bring a brainwashed theist step by step to the brink of realization that what they believe is wrong, their ego kicks into gear and their brain side-slips. It's like trying to grasp a wet bar of soap. Pyewww! Off it goes - let the industrial strength prevarication commence. If logic were a bullet, guys like this are Kevlar.
Howard
"Our father who art in Heaven, Howard be the name..."
"Our father who AIN'T..." :o)
Howard is His middle name; His first name is obviously Andy, like the song:
Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own. ("In the Garden" 1913 by C. Austin Miles)
😂
Fuck yeah! Saw that Black Sabbath shirt and knew it was going to be an awesome show!
Captain Trips is coming to town.
Mark Twain funny and dark
Waiting for don’t fear the reaper to start playing on repeat from some unidentifiable location, audible from everywhere on the globe.
Classic T-shirt!
Learn so much from this guy.
This was a terrific episode.
Don and Matt were excellent.
I really love the view of the building at the start of the show how it looks like a inverted cross was that intentional or a happy go lucky coincidence
It was intelligently designed. ;)
There is no building - that is the "Atheist Experience" logo: AXP on the desk between the hosts [lit up in blue] & also in bottom left of the video. Notice that the XP is rather like the Chi-Rho, an amalgamation of the two Greek letters rendered as ☧ - the symbol often used to represent Christ in some Christian Churches.
welcome everyone to the MATT SHOW
I wonder why christians don't simply get on their direct hotline to god and have this just handled expeditiously.
@Phillip Hickman exactly. he has a higher calling. Making sure people go to church to spread coronavirus!
@Phillip Hickman yep. We so nasty for causing the crusades, Salem witch trials, slaughtering of the mideonites, and Inquisition.
@Phillip Hickman your religion caused the Holocaust. I'm sorry you are confused by it. Happens to a lot of theists.
I think that was an awesome episode y'all
Sometimes, I wonder why people hate Alex Jones so much.
Then I hear literally anything related to him on the news, and I stop wondering.
I don't even have to hear what he says to not appreciate him, his voice and tone and the fact that he is always shouting for no apparent reasons is enough for me.
Similar thing anytime Anyone finds out there, until very recently a cat cafe in Boston. Then they hear anything about it their jaws drop in shock and horror.
Listen to the podcast Knowledge fight and you'll understand even better why. :)
Last caller Luck sure picked the wrong time to call in! Slam dunk Matt!
Matt for vice president!
Only vice president
@@casper130rocks yes he needs to slowly conquer not just show up and be the king of the states lol
Kinkosho
NO!! Matt doesn't need to be vise president or vise anything.
@@sherribhl5626 I agree but it would fill me with great joy if it was him instead of the praying albino mantis that we have now

The praying albino Mantua????????
What do you have against praying?
Excellent show... Matt at his best.
Horns up for Sabbath!! \m/
Black Sabbath during the ozzy era praised jesus and god so its weird to see matt wearing that! Plus it was soft rock ick

Tom from St Louis deserves The Caller of the Month Award. Matt looks a little careworn but watch his face at 52.17 - its priceless.
oh and that's the Faisalea behind me in the pic...Riyadh...ive spent a lot of time in mid east
I just have to say this - Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Bravo Matt, you are such a wonderful man, with such a big heart, and an amazing brain, I love you. :)
Heaven is so perfect that there are Fallen Angels.
I love that point. Christians seem not to get it. If heaven were perfect, why would anyone want to leave?
@GodCreatedNature So much for the idea that heaven is a perfect place.
@GodCreatedNature That's absolutely hilarious. Besides the fact that there is no way you could ever know any of this to be true, it sounds just like every other mythology. But you actually believe it.
That's awesome.
@GodCreatedNature
"It's what the Bible says."
The Bible also says we should take our unruly children to the edge of town and stone them to death.
The Bible also says that you may own, sell and beat slaves.
"I appreciate your nervous laughter."
Making shit up, are we? Yeah, not surprised.
"I've got tons of it"
Bullshit? Well, then, yes. Yes you have.
"50 yrs of destroying the religious cult of atheism"
There is nothing more pathetic than having to boast about something you think you've done. That made me smile.
Atheism is a cult the way NOT collecting stamps is a hobby. You might want to look at how cults/religions work. I'll go over with it for you later if you're not too lazy to go look it up.
This sounds like we're going to have fun. Well, at least I will.
Great show guys
27:20 Harold be thy name
Hurray for the AXP/ACA O.G.'s!!!
Matt and Don, my favorite hosts. Don't tell Jenna.
Okay. I'll keep that secret just between the 2 of us here, now...uh-oh, never mind! :o)

Oh noooooooooooooooooo! Hassan the zero guy. Shut him off, no preaching allowed.
This is Matt at his best.
Matt makes an excellent point about apologist consistency. They remind me of the so-called Feng Shui "practitioners" that Penn & Teller employed to make the "correct" Feng Shui room layout; Hint- they all rearranged the room completely differently. (Often putting the room layout back to the arrangement, that others said was all wrong.)
There are Feng Shui frauds just as there are religious frauds. One benefit of encountering Feng Shui is that at least it sets some people thinking about ways in which they can improve the psychological impact of their immediate environments.
@@REDPUMPERNICKEL Correction; there are not "some" FS frauds. FS is fraud. Also, all religion is fraud.
@@LogicAndReason2025 I'm thinking that in order for there to be fraud there must also be intent.
Religion endures because of cultural inertia. I think the kind old minister in the church next door believes in what he preaches whereas, it seems to me, the televangelists are blatantly god awful disciples of Mammon, fraudsters to the core.
Feng Shui, for many of us, is import from a foreign culture. As such we are well served to acknowledge that our understanding may be deficient according to our ignorance of that culture. When I contemplate the extraordinarily ugly miles of strip malls, gas stations, billboards and decaying asphalt that our culture has imposed on paradise then I find the idea that things could look nicer if folks had more culturally induced concern for aesthetics. I'm kinda hoping that Feng Shui might serve as a catalyst.
@@REDPUMPERNICKEL Feng Shui is not "aesthetics" it is fraud. Penn & Teller and others proved it by showing that the "practitoners" were full of shite when they claimed the practice was totally scientific. There is intentional fraud, and unintentional (negligence) fraud. Either way; bunk is bunk. Stupid is no excuse. If you don't know, don't claim to know. That's fraud.
@@LogicAndReason2025 Anyone claiming a scientific basis for aesthetic taste must be regarded as at best deluded and at worst a blatant fraud. But that the selection of plants and their arrangement in my garden are more pleasing to my eye than other selections and arrangements no one can deny. If there is any validity at all to Jungian archetypal psychology then one should expect that more than 50% will concur that my preferred selection and arrangement is more pleasing. This has been my experience. Of course, too small a sample to assert a scientific conclusion but the whole topic makes for interesting discussion, in some circles. Cheers.
Damn! Somebody gave Matt his happy pill today! Rock on!
Luke was a damn fool, blinded to an obvious conclusion by his religion goggles
@OnyxEyes That matt can make value on other's judgement doenst make him a moral relativist, only someone who can make judgement's on others people (even if you believe in absolute morality, you still make these judgements).
And about the existence of Don, many hosts, including matt, explained they can present the videos, photos and even ids of them existing, not only grounding it in personal experiences.
There are some issues if you only listen half the conversation, but once you listen the explanation completely these issues just dont exist anymore.
Tremendous disquisition by Matt!!
I personally think Matt's position on subjectivity of morality (the chess analogy) is weaker than it needs to be because we are physical beings that evolved to survive and I have little doubt that our foundations that we eventually encapsulate in words is actually rooted in instincts of survival which is physical making the foundation at least partially objective.
Given this I don't think it's necessary to say we can start with that is subjective but we can derive objective truths from that. I think it's fair to say that well being of ourselves and others is founded in our very existence (the instincts that allowed us to survive). Granted the complexities of human society mean it's not all instinct and thinking things through is necessary but I would maintain that the foundational points are mostly rooted in instinct such as "well being of myself and others is preferable than not".
Then again I guess if you are a science denier and therefore most likely an evolution denier then this line of thought would be meaningless.
Just Data that’s a fascinating perspective on objectivity. I usually describe instincts for wellbeing as ‘natural’ but I can understand taking the next step to saying they’re objective.
If you’re alright with it, could you answer one quick question I have on this? If something is written into humans, (say even ALL humans) as part of who they are, is it objective if it isn’t external to those humans? Basically, if all ‘subjects’ agree unanimously on something, is it still aubjective, or objective at that point?
No worries if you don’t wanna answer, but you’ve already said stuff I hadn’t expected to hear, and I’d love to see if you know even more that I haven’t learned yet😊
@David Valerio Chess is something arbitrary that we made up and has no innate value to our existence so while it makes a point I do agree with I find it lacking. It is true that individuals will go against instincts at times, maybe, one could argue that we only run on instinct all the time but ignoring that, it's the collective behavior of populations and the basics that they follow that matters, any one action by any individual doesn't really come into it for the most part evolutionarily.
@@awkwardukulele6077 You question is far better suited for Matt D. than me, I am certainly not a philosopher, just an average Joe who likes to think things through... although I like to think I'm pretty good at it. ;) That said, my initial reaction is anything that is decided only by agreement is necessarily not objective (unless by chance) therefore must be one of the other jectives. My understanding is for something to be objective it must be tied back to something that's a physical fact/observation.
Sometimes it's easier to answer these questions if you take it to an extreme to see how it shapes up. Consider your question in the 3 cases when there was 1,000,000 people, 2 people and one person in existence. Perhaps looking at it from these three angles you might best come up with what will be true in all cases.
Human morals are empathy+reasoning thats basically counciousness
