    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Caller #2 was an intelligent caller and conversation. Especially interesting was the comment she made about Matt and Jen being intelligent people, and the conversation that followed. It's not about having more intelligence, it's about applying rational thought. This can be done by anyone. As Matt has said before, his IQ was the same while he was Christian - then he applied rational thinking. Questioning, doubting - as Jen said - is a powerful tool... but it must be applied.

Thank you! I'm excited, but nervous to get back home. I have a 16-month old to help raise, which I think will be tougher than anything I encountered this year. My wife and I struggled a long time to have a child, then I got called away from home shortly after our son's arrival. I've stayed in touch pretty well though video calls, and I'm completely in love, but also feel like I don't know him yet. In a way, our relationship feels mythical to me. I'm scared I won't be a good dad. My wife and I are the only two skeptics of our immediate families too, which can make things weird with the in-laws and grandparents (deeply Evangelical). Military life is much simpler than all of that.

(Mike) It's great you're safe and coming home. It's also great your wife's an atheist, too, so you're both seeing the world with the same sensibilities without a religious conflict. My dad had to miss my first couple of birthdays (and my sister's) due to Vietnam, but he raised us well when he got home. Everything worked out and it likely will for you, your wife and your son. Just give it time and be patient with yourself; you'll feel connected to him again, I'm sure.
Btw, have you heard of MAAF? It's a group based in D.C. that serves as support nationwide for atheists who've been in the military. You might check them out, if you haven't heard of them. A link is found in the freethoughts blog or the ACA main page.

Thank you, AE gang, for another great show! In response to "Mark in Philadelphia" and "No atheists in foxholes," I have been fighting caner for a year now. I receive chemo every three weeks. I would walk (or at times, roll) into hospital, sit in a big chair, look up to see a crucifix on the wall in front of me. Nuns would walk around with crosses hanging from their belts and around their necks and stop to chat with you. "Where is your Bible? Do you need a Bible?" was always the conversation starter. I started carrying my copy of "Hitcher's Guild to the Galaxy", that I had in a cloth cover, that had gold leaf on the edges of the pages. (Looked just like a Bible! XD) But-to-the-point, I felt very uncomfortable thinking about how these people were so proud of a torture device. A TORTURE DEVICE, right? NEVER once did I give "GOD" a second thought, Not once! Never "turned to God" for help, never even entered my mind. I transferred my treatments to a secular hospital and I think I made the right choice. Much happier there. The program seems to fit me better (and my doctors agree). I will be finished with chemo by the end of the year (YEAH!!) then on to the next step. Thank you all, this show has been more help to me, than all the "Sisters" in town!

How do I explain to my incredibly sweet and loving mother that my abandonment of faith wasn't her fault? I know she won't ever understand why I left. I didn't have a great experience with the church. I was in an ACE Christian private school, and had a horrible experience. My mother worked at the school, but she was one of the only genuinely kind and loving people who worked there. To make a long story short. The head pastor of the church that ran the school was the definition of a cult leader, who eventually got ousted for sleeping with the other member's wives. My mother knew nothing about any of this, and was under the control of this cult leader. I know she experiences intense grief because several of my siblings and my father have all left the faith. I know she blames herself because of the negative experiences we had, and believes that's why we're no longer Christian. I love her very much, and I want to spare her this pain, but I know she will never see things my way. I just hate that she cries herself to sleep, believing that the people she loves the most are going to hell.

I encountered one of the best examples of evolution while working on a exotic bird farm.
The bird I will refer to is the Hawaiian Goose. This bird is a relative of the Canadian goose. It is not native to the Hawaiian Islands.
It flew there. Since the birds arrival man has watched this birds changes and evolution as it adapted to this new environment and warmer
    climate.
Changes this goose has undergone that man has watched are that due to this birds living fat on the hog in an environment where there is no real natural predators. This goose no longer can fly as typical geese, it is a very poor swimmer and can actually drown. It is slow and cumbersome as well as clumsy on land. Its general markings that made it look similar to that of its relative the Canadian Goose. It evolved into a bird of a different colors. Colors that attracted mates but also man in hunt for its feathers.
It is simple.. Evolution is a factual process,, it happens.

She still seems to fear hell and she gets upset when thinking about how her family members are genuinely dead and gone and aren't actually in heaven. I think Matt can really relate to her in that manner, though I'm sure he's a little upset that she still hasn't come to the conclusion yet there is no god.

    • @boblangford5514
      @boblangford5514 Год назад

What was the context? The lesson? Do you remember? I would not word it that way, but in some practical ways, your teacher has a point. For example, I used to teach 4th grade math, and there is no way for me to explain to a 4th grader why the area of a circle is equal to pi times the radius squared. You have to learn integral calculus to understand why that is the formula for the area of a circle.
We learn things in baby steps, and in doing so, sometimes we have to accept some things as fact before fully understanding.
Another practical example: I don’t understand how a car works, but I can drive one. You don’t learn how a car works in driver’s ed. You learn how to drive. Those are different branches of knowledge on the same tree.
Of course, I don’t think you should accept everything without questioning, but often times you do have to accept something as fact before completely understanding.

Yeah I think going after Matt’s tone is a mistake. Some people need some profanity in order to take their behavior seriously. Some people don’t like it. I think it’s good to see a variety of approaches from the different hosts. If the callers don’t want profanity, they can call one of the other hosts. In the end it seems way more productive to address all the times people are wrong as opposed to every time someone takes an approach to something you agree with in a different manner than you would. That is just nitpicking. For me his occasional profanity is authentic to who he is.

Theists are by definition unintelligent. Faith, as in belief without evidence, is not a marker of intelligence, it is a marker of credulity, which is a low IQ trait. It doesn't take a genius to point out that an individual must either not possess or completely suspend his rational faculties in order to believe something on par with a fairy tale. It is void of any quality associated with intelligence - critical thinking skills, investigation, even creativity - all absent by necessity in order for faith to BE faith.
It may sound cruel, but there's no getting away from it. As far as it's ever reasonable to judge intelligence, theists are demonstrably stupid. These people are arrogant, preachy, and emotionally vitriolic about it anyway, so fuck it, I don't feel bad putting the spotlight on their inadequate cognition.

What I heard was somebody who was trying to get on common ground with Matt. When she brought up God's hardening the heart of the pharaoh, I think she was only offering a different opinion. That is what I heard. I put myself in her place and felt sorry for her. I have called into that show many times trying to ask if magicians can actually levitate people and they always say to call really early and they prefer theists to call and so I have never gotten on that show. They actually would rather have a theist call in than an atheist so when somebody who calls in who seems like an atheist, I don't get why Matt would rip that person a new ass*** because they said that they thought that Hebrews 11 was an oximoron. I am pretty sure she wasn't trying to say that it was easy to convince people that if they only thought about it that they'd realize how stupid that scripture is. She was not given a chance to explain her conversation that she had had with a person about that scripture. How Matt reacted was the same as what Matt Slick does when you call into his show. Matt Slick also has a one track mind and refuses to listen to his callers unless his callers 100% agree with everything that comes out of his mouth, which makes for a very boring show. I love Matt and I think he has a hard time dealing with people who he thinks are against him. He has done videos where he says that he has made the mistake of going off on a rant without listening to what the caller is trying to get at and I believe that he will realize that he did that with Sam.

he11b1ade, and now I am a dishonest, annoying asshole? Wow, you are not a very nice person. Have you ever called into that show? Are you an atheist or a believer? I would guess you are an atheist. I am also an athesist and if you have ever tried to call into that show, you will hear them say that they prefer for theists to call in and not atheists. In any case, it's a call-in show and they want people to call in, whether atheists or theists. It doesn't matter if you are an atheist or a theist. If they want people to continue to call in, then they should all be treated with respect, even if their comments seem stupid to them. They want theists especially to call in and if those callers are treated like they are just stupid and only call in just to hear themselves talk, then I can almost guaranteeyou that people will be too afraid to call in after that. It is especially egregious to treat somebody like that who is on your side like what Matt did to Sam. What Matt did when it came to explaining Hebrews 11 was to make it look like that scripture is true and not false. I always look forward to Sunday afternoons and that show and for the first time last week I recommended that show to some theist friends of mine and I hope they didn't tune it in because that is not the show that I would be proud of recommending again. If you only want to come back and say that anybody who might disagree with you in your assement of that show and call me a dishonest, annoying asshole, then all I can say is for you to stick your head up your ass as far as it can go because that's where it already is.

he11b1ade, do you think I am a theist? I don't get why you call me a troll? I am an atheist and I love the Atheist Experience and always look forward to watching it every Sunday. If I am not able to watch it live, I will always watch it later on RUclips. I also love Matt Dillahunty and listen to his videos over and over again and recommend his videos to my daughter who is also an atheist. I feel bad for Matt because I have watched his videos where he talks about how sometimes he makes the mistake of not listening to what the caller is trying to get at and he goes off on a rant about an entirely different topic and later regrets it. When I was listening to that show on Sunday that is what I saw. When it comes to Hebrews 11 (which I used and believed in for the 50 years I was a Jehovah's Witness, I thought it was a "sin" not to have the faith as described in Hebrews chapter 11. I believed it with all my heart and it is Matt Dillahunty who gives the best explanation of how silly that "faith" is according to Hebrews 11 and when Sam was trying to tell him about her thoughts about Hebrews chapter 11, he went off on saying that she was trying to tell them that they should not even discuss it with callers and that is not at all what she was trying to say. He went on a very long rant and if anybody knows anything about that show at all, you would know that Matt Dillahunty would not discourage callers from calling in about faith and Hebrews 11 and it was clear from the get go that she was not a Christian and was on his side but he ripped her a new ass*** for something she was not even trying to accomplish. When Matt went off on her when she got out about 2 words about it being an oximoron, he started ranting about something you can't see and he started saying it wasn't an oximoron because blind people have evidence, which sounded like he was agreeing with the description of faith found in Hebrews chapter 11. What Matt didn't realize (I think) was that he was giving credence to Hebrews chapter 11. Blind people have evidence of things they can't see because they can hold those things in their hands and they can smell things and they can hear things etc. There is solid evidence of things they can't see so there's solid evidence of things they can't see. We have faith in the weather forecast because there's solid evidence of those forecasts being accurate because of past experience of those forecasts coming true. Sam was not allowed to explain anything at all that she was tring to say which discourages anybody from even calling in unless it's somebody like Traci who was a mouse in the hands of Matt. I saw it as Matt going off the deep end because of either being tired or short-tempered. If that is the way Matt Dillahunty is in real life, I can see why his marriage did not work out.

A couple of years ago a Moderator ( I use the word loosely on this occasion!) on the AE Facebook Discussion Group page expelled me from the Group. My ‘crime’? Suggesting to other participants in a discussion that their points could be made better without resort to name-calling and expletives. I suggested we actually try being nice to one another. unit 003 your logic is flawed if you think that's the way to approach the argument. Destroying the argument accomplishes nothing unless you change the mind of the person making the argument. These people will continue using the same arguments, plus have a story about how they were bullied by angry atheists to tell their friends... and guess what? They would be speaking the truth. Destroying arguments so you can sound smart and give yourself a point is of no value. "You have not converted a man because you have silenced him." - John Morley

Also cause i’d Really like to share whole video links with questioning religious people like my parents, without needing to worry about all their atheist stereotypes being validated in one minute. It’s nice to be able to trust a channel with reliable rep, so I won’t need to just pick out persuasive segments and babysit the video players for them in person to skip any parts where the “ cynical arrogant atheist” host starts shouting over a confused caller and cursing at her. Is it just me or does Matt seem like he is getting easily frustrated, upset, and more obtuse to callers lately?
I agree with all his points, but I wonder if this attitude and using vulgar language all the time may turn away theists who are questioning their beliefs. I could care less about the language. But I think the old Matt that was a bit more tolerant, was more effective in changing minds.

@@sorgeelenchus You're misrepresenting Matt's criticisms of Peterson. His main objection was to Peterson's content-free word salad in nearly every response, especially when cornered. When did Matt display similar behavior in order to meet your charge of hypocrisy? Besides, he flatly admits to being an asshole and easily frustrated with callers. Hardly the admissions of a hypocrite. He's extremely self-aware and honest, it seems. I'm not defending his behavior. Rather, I'm pointing out that your assessment of Matt isn't grounded in reality. I think she was trying to say at first, that Heb 11:1 is self- contradictiory (she used oxymoron but I'm not sure if that was the correct word) because faith is NOT substance or evidence, or at least, is not a pathway to knowledge which of course is true and what Matt always argues, correctly. Perhaps she meant that Matt could just point that out it's a silly verse because of this. But Matt just got pissed off so quickly, because he just got the wrong end of the stick from the get go and didnt realise she agreed with him (she wants to discuss the silliness of it with believers, so does he), then he tries to tell her what she was saying when she clearly wasnt and just would not let her clarify. And so it deteriorated. Jen is usually a good listener but I think she was jumping off Matt's attitude, and wasn't following either (I guess it was hard to since the caller couldnt explain herself through the interruptions). I'm not surprised that she was surprised that the caller was not a theist. If they had both listened instead of charging down the wrong path, this would have turned out better.
I do like Matt, he has thought through it all and come to the right conclusions, but occasionally he just gallops away on his hobby horse without getting what is happening. Calm down Matt, you will be a better communicator if you become a better listener. I completely get it that many (most?) of the people he has to deal with are ... well, morons, but that's no excuse for treating anyone so rudely and dismissively.

I’ll go back and give it another listen. I just thought that she didn’t have her thoughts properly organized and came off as unprepared. That said, I have noticed a trend in Matt’s behavior lately. I love Matt and don’t know if it is an ego or a burn out thing , but his patience is wearing thin on the show. I know at times it will chastise the caller for calling in to try asking them “Why he should care about of “X, Y or Z“ not realizing that it isn’t just Matt and the hosts who are watching, but viewers at home. Many of which haven’t heard before.
If I was a new viewer here, I would be totally lost. It’s like Matt is teaching theology at a calculus level before the callers and/or viewers have finished algebra class. He would definitely do himself a big service if he were to just take a big deep breath and ask them to try and get back on track. Matt’s worst trait is this patience, and his quick trigger to just hang up on somebody is off-putting.
EDIT: OK.. I went back and listen, and while I agree with your points in my earlier point regarding my patience, I still stand by that Sam was completely disorganized. Here is what was perplexing with her call:
Evidence unseen - blind people (silence for like 10 seconds)
How do you get people to think about Hebrew 1 if you don’t challenge them on it? (Silence AGAIN)
Says Matt’s wrong for saying God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. The Bible does say that though.
Re Pharaohs heart: Bible says both but why is she debating this like a Christian? Lol here’s where I’m confused with her?
What does Ex 9:12 say? (Sam silence forever again)...never answers..just moves on.
She says things “do happen not according to God’s plan”. WTF?
Matt “why should I care what any Testament says?” (Again.. it isn’t just Matt and the hosts who are watching)

This was a great show, I liked how Jen pointed out that even though one may not believe in god they'll keep that "spiritual" side of it because they're afraid of death. To add to that statement, I find some people just can't deal with the fact they'll never see their loved again. I understand that, but they should learn how to deal with death instead of believing in something that most likely isn't true.

    • @jane-marie3289
      @jane-marie3289 6 лет назад

That's why I put "spiritual" in quotes. In the same way the religious use the word "faith" to replace "I believe there's a god but I have no evidence", people who claim not to be believe in a god, but believe in an afterlife, will use the word "spiritual" to replace "I believe in life after death so therefore will see my loved ones again, yet I have no evidence". Both words are meaningless to someone who is a rational, skeptical and critical thinker.

(Jane-Marie) I think the spiritual who believe in heaven still also fundamentally believe in their god. I don't think the two are exclusive. I think their biggest gripe is just with religion or the church. In that respect, I guess they're just deists.
I also think that most of the spiritual actually deny this afterlife concept and are just in tune with the interconnectedness we all share. I go as far to still use the Holy Spirit to describe it, as contradictory as that sounds.

(C Nault) We studied this in grad school (for Clinical Social Work). For most, being spiritual is just feeling an interconnectedness with people. The Christian-- both Catholic and Protestant-- call this the Holy Spirit. The spiritualist sees it as a "we're all in the same boat" kind of thing.

His mistake is irrelevant. Jeff's cercular argument came full circle to I believe it because the bible says it. The verse is taken out of context anyway. It has nothing to do with intelligent design or God's creation, it's Jesus just saying " hey, I'm the only way you can get to eternal salvation, trust me and follow me."

Also it’s easier to sympathize with how tiring it might be to hear new people giving the same old arguments and questions and mistakes... if that sympathy wasn’t diverted by the frankly abusive attitudes toward less some callers. I have to laugh when some believers say things like "don't put your trust in what men say, put your trust in the word of God".....blah blah blah, sure, of course it would be great to hear from someone higher than man, I'd like nothing better but the cold hard fact of the matter is that the so-called "word of God" AKA the Bible was written by MEN, just like ALL books were written by men and women, human beings etc.
Whichever book or source of information you want to put your trust in, you cannot avoid the fact that you are, to some degree, putting your trust in the people that wrote those books or provided you with the information but what's worse about the Bible is that we are being asked to put our trust in writings that were done by men who once lived many thousands of years ago who have no way of being able to practically demonstrate any of what they told us right here and right now.
This is as opposed to putting our trust in the writings of people who have much more updated information and can actually demonstrate in real time, right in front of our eyes the things they are telling us, we can see Scientific claims in action, so we can reasonably justify our trust in what Scientists say, I don't know about anyone else here but I can't remember the last time I saw a Christian feed five thousand hungry people with a handful of loaves and fishes, or turn water into wine, can you? Lol.
Now, if Christians could demonstrate that kind of power, we might at least have something we can investigate, as it stands at the moment, we've got nothing, nothing but a load of unfalsifiable claims coming from them and from their book, I don't have faith in Science, I have warranted trust in it because it is demonstrable, that is the key to judging any extraordinary claim, can the person making the claim demonstrate it in front of you? If not, why should you believe it? Show me the Red Sea parting, show me the Sun remaining in the same position relative to the Earth for 24 hours and so on, if this God could do all that then, why can't he do it now??

Never thought I'd say this, as I've been an avid listener to AXP for years, but Matt really needs to dial it down a bit. He's becoming more like the caricature that gets presented by theists in edited clips, and it's disappointing because he's capable of so much better. His Atheist Debates series proves that he can lay down a rational discussion calmly and reasonably. His "debate" with Sye Ten Bruggencate proves he can have a dialogue with a colossally dishonest cretinous douche and still keep his cool.
But recently he's been way too quick to shred into callers on the show. He's very quick to make an issue if they interrupt or talk over him...and well he should...but he's way too willing to do the same to them and if they bring it up he threatens to hang up on them. There's been several calls over the last few times he's hosted where he's responded or made a point...paused...and then continued talking. Which is fine, but with the delay on the phones the callers sometimes thing he's finished when he's not, so they start talking and he goes full beast mode because it seems like they were talking over him.
And this isn't about the callers being rude or not answering his points. He's perfectly entitled to get pissed at them if they fuck around or talk total bullshit, but sometimes he just won't let them even make their point. There was one call when he asked this guy a question, and the guy was starting to respond with "I'm going to explain..." and Matt would cut him off and shout at him for not answering in the way Matt wanted to. It went back and forth like that for several minutes and all Matt would have needed to do was let the guy answer and then deal with what he said. But he never did get to give any actual answer because Matt just kept cutting him off.
The show is supposed to be about having conversations about what people believe and why....but a conversation is at least a two way process, it's not about Matt shouting at callers and then hanging up. Whats the point of having people call in if they don't at least get to finish a sentence?

I disagree. Think about how many times he's seen the same arguments and the same justifications? If he doesn't cut people off, they ramble, and the thread of reason he's trying to lead the caller along gets lost very quickly. I have been watching this show on RUclips for 10 years. I have seen hundreds of hours of him talking to callers. He has no obligation to be nice to anyone because that's not what the show is about.

@@DemstarAus "Think about how many times he's seen the same arguments and the same justifications? "
And yet he also makes a point of saying that while he might have heard the argument etc loads of times...the Caller might not have, and there's a strong likelihood that there's people listening who are also hearing it for the first time...
So how many times HE has heard it shouldn't be an excuse.

John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life...”
In all my years, I’ve never heard it misquoted as light until today. I thought Matt practically had the bible memorized - and he was so rude to the caller about this verse. I really hope he finds out someday that he was wrong and thinks about how he told the caller to go learn the bible with such dismissive arrogance.
Initially I was going to comment on how Matt has developed so much patience over the years of this show and is more kind to these callers - but it really seems like he holds them in contempt because they aren’t as brilliant or familiar with the bible, syllogisms, debating, science, history, etc. as he is.
