    ► freethoughtblog...
    RUclips comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of RUclips comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      @@swaggyswag4999 Atheism is a lack of belief. Fighting for the freedom not to believe, is very different from fighting for a belief in something. And both of those things are different from fighting to force others to follow your beliefs.

      A lot of these atheists still believe in Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, even after I showed them the mistake in it. I figured this out when I was in high school Our physics teacher was telling us about Einstein. He said Einstein had proven that a moving clock would be slower than a clock that was not moving. So for the moving clock I imagined a clock in a flying airplane and for the clock that was not moving, a clock on the ground. It was obvious to me that if the pilot of the airplane had a slower clock than an observer on the ground had to time the flight of the airplane, the pilot of the airplane would get a faster speed for the airplane than the observer on the ground. Then I read Einstein's book on the subject and was surprised to learn that the equations that Einstein used for Special Relativity showed that the pilot and the observer on the ground would get the same speed for the airplane.
      x' = (x-vt)/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
      y' = y
      z' = z
      t' = (t-vx/c^2)/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
      inverse equations
      x = (x' + vt')/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)
      y = y'
      z = z'
      t = (t' + vx'/sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2)
      v is the speed of the airplane and is the same speed as seen from either frame of reference. We common people have to live in something called reality. In reality if the pilot of the airplane has a slower clock than the observer on the ground, as Einstein said he would have, then the pilot gets a faster speed for the airplane than the observer on the ground. So Einstein's equations for Special Relativity are really a mathematical description of a miracle or a supernatural event. If atheists want to have a miracle, I certainly have no objection. Watch how many atheists answer this post.

      The indoctrination of my youth, adolescence, young adult, middle aged adult, was so complete I saw my whole world and life through it. It took the contradiction between the Bible promises and real life experience to overcome and break it. For me it was prayer and lack of fulfilled biblical promises. Why I never saw it earlier: indoctrination.
      My indoctrination was complete and all-encompassing so that when it broke, it broke completely. It was all interconnected, so it all went away at once, in my moment of understanding. What a burden lifted and gone. What clarity and clearness of vision and understanding.
      That was my personal experience. Family and friends did not see my loss of faith the way I did.

      The real courage comes when you have children of your own and you are not at all convinced of the things that you now realise were told to you in your infancy through to your formative years and then suddenly in adolesence you are given 'freedom' to go on believing or upset everyone by asking the questions that til now would have been laughed at and brushed aside. While they are babies and even toddlers you have time to consider how to proceed with their delicate minds. It takes a coward to assert to them as absolutes what you yourself have to struggke with. By all means teach them what others believe IN THE FACE OF ZERO EVIDENCE so they will not be osteracized from the social group they share but also teach them skepticism and your own way of evaluating so called 'evident' beliefs.
      Better to reveal to them Religion in general as a societal phenomenon that can and has had a chequered history and what is the current 'state of play' in your/their neighbourhood, school, family etc. If you truly are yourself cowed into conformity you MUST tell them your story fully and explain why act one way when they know you'd rather not. To be ALWAYS a source of reason for them to bring ALL their doubts, frusrrations and confusions to will be the greatest gift of love that respects their own travels and travails through life. Demonstrate then so that they will also know to do the same when they have children of their own the difference between unconditional love of an earthly father as opposed to the very conditional love of a 'heavenly' one and those that gobble your freedoms (free will) and easily dismiss and disown on a technicality
      They will respect and love you for it.

To people like that you could even prove that you're telling the truth but it will be dismissed as a lie or nonsense to preserve their sense of identity. I don't believe him or any of the apologists who claimed to have been atheists ever were atheists in the first place.. I was raised going to a General Baptist church and believed for 30 years but then actually read the entire bible. That combined with studying the history of the Levant caused me to lose my faith. Apart from Jesus actually coming back and seeing it for myself, there's nothing that could convince me that the bible's correct or a god exists.

      I imagine there are horror stories of nightmare like experiences when people experience hypoxia. Nitrogen narcosis is similar to hypoxia because they both tend to cause people to experience elated, euphoric feelings. Divers who experience nitrogen narcosis do irrational things like even take off their breathing source because they believe they can breathe in water. It’s called Rapture of the Deep. I never have experienced nitrogen narcosis but I have experienced hypoxia during simulated cabin blowouts at 40,000 feet at NASA/JSC. I felt elated from lack of oxygen but just before I passed out instructors put oxygen masks on my face and I realized how I was fooled by the elated feelings. I guess I had a near non-breath experience.

    I'm not particularly "special" or smarter, more intelligent than anyone else. Based on my experience throughout my 40+ years of life, I'd place my intellect in the "average" category, if I were to categorize my opinion of my own intellect at all, and I don't understand how ANYBODY could come to the conclusion that ANY divine or supernatural phenomena exist at all.
    I had a fairly normal childhood, maybe a little rougher than most kids, because I was the youngest, quite the troublemaker compared to my siblings, and even given up to multiple foster families and group homes and back to my parents from when I was in elementary school to when I began 8th grade.
    One thing that was relatively consistent was living with families of one denomination of Christianity or another the whole time. I was baptized twice, once while living with my mother and stepfather and once while living with a foster family, I attended Royal Rangers youth camp/scout group every week for a couple years, and was "saved" many times.
    Or, at least I went through the motions, essentially pretending because I never felt anything significant or even out of the ordinary lol I never heard any prayers being answered, and no matter how much I tried to overcome my natural feelings of skepticism so I could open myself up to it as much as possible, literally trying to force myself to believe I was receptive, I NEVER felt any divine presence or what anyone would consider the effects of a "Holy Spirit."
    Eventually, as I was going through high school, I stopped attending church altogether, because I was so often just bored to tears and struggling to stay awake between looking at my watch to track the progress of the service through the little itinerary pamphlet they give you at the door lol but by then I wasn't even praying outside of those services, and that's when I was actually made to show up by my parents that particular week.
    I didn't have anything against the Religion, but it had always just felt so far fetched to me. That some Invisible Guy was watching me everywhere I went and everything I did, judging me and considering whether or not my prayers were selfless enough to warrant answering.
    And, that he made himself manifest in his "son" so he could die for the sins of everyone here on Earth a long time ago, but had essentially been virtually SILENT ever since and there was this rapture we all had to prepare for because the sky was going to split open during my lifetime and Jesus was going to return to the Earth.
    It all seemed just as fantastical as Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy to me.
    And, it boggled my MIND that any sane, rational adult would actually believe any of this to be true, especially the people I knew who seemed to have their lives so "together" in every other conceivable aspect of their lives.
    Watching this show lately has been a rather stark reminder of those days, for me, because I haven't been in such close proximity to those things for so long. And I'm hearing what sound like otherwise intelligent, rational people twisting themselves into knots trying to justify their beliefs in something that just seems so absolutely absurd it beggars belief!
    I get the whole "indoctrination" concept. But, why would anyone use reason and evidence in every other aspect of their lives but for the ONE arguably most important thing they use Faith because there has never been presented any actual reasonable evidence?
    HOW can anyone be so completely deluded?
    HOW can anyone actually believe something for which there isn't even evidence to support a possibility, let alone probability? Or take the extra step to call it an actual "fact"?!
    I'd be willing to bet I'm not the only one who was pretending, and I'd also be willing to bet that a good percentage of the people who claim to believe secretly really don't. Regardless of what they say.
    I'd be willing to bet a not insignificant number of them are straight up lying, to themselves and to everyone else. I'd even calculate it's close to ¼ or even ⅓ of them ALL.
    Because I'm not that much different than anyone else, and something built on such weak foundations cannot possibly hold up to someone's own scrutiny or self-examination or self-reflection.
    I'm essentially convinced that a majority of the world's religions were wholly invented by human beings to give some seemingly much-needed significance to their lives, to create a light at the end of the tunnel. And then the concept was used to control and oppress others over the next couple thousand years.
    I'm convinced that scientific literacy is the most effective inoculate against those beliefs, charlatans and those who would try to BULLSHIT you. And that the Universe and all the properties and processes we observe are FAR more meaningful and significant, more beautiful and profound than ANYTHING that can or has ever been dreamed up by human beings.
    I'm convinced that if there WAS a "God," he would envy US, because we are mortal, every day could be our last and we will never be here again. Which makes this life, the only life anyone actually KNOWS we have, the only life we have ANY evidence to support, more meaningful than ANY imaginary "afterlife" posited by ANY man-made myth.
    And, most importantly to this particular topic, at least, I'm absolutely convinced that there is no "God" or "Creator" even more so than most "Christians" are convinced that there is.

      If "the supernatural" exists and manifests in the physical world, science could at least observe, conclude and even, perhaps, measure the effect. It couldn't relate that effect to a supernatural cause. But it could note similarities & differences as compared to other known things.
      And if this supernatural whatsit DOESn't manifest in the physical world...there's no there there. At least yet. It's Tracie's visible jar of invisible transcendant dice.

    Okay.. so Step 1 of this process appears to be - Define what it is that you're talking about (Gods, ghosts etc.), in a way that can be understood clearly, using physical evidence.
    Interestingly, I've listened to several Alan Watts lectures, and he brings up a concept called "Neti, Neti" (it's a Sanskrit phrase for a Hindu expression) Alan Watts explains this as a quality of Deity to be necessarily undefinable.
    So, I've watched the show enough to see a pattern, People call in - Fail step one (necessarily) - and result to chatting about their feelings.
