    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      No, it's Matt Dillahunty who is the best host.

      @-cosmicrogue- 5 лет назад +15

      @@psandbergnz Sometimes Matt's AMAZINGLY CLEVER and sometimes his tactics can backfire and escalate theist callers anger and make them defensive and worse. (Although, that's entertaining too!)
      But Tracy is like a steady rock foundation as a host. Not as quick and charismatic as Matt can be, but more consistent and easier to communicate with.
      What I always find interesting is that Matt uses sharp and precise arguments to shut down combative callers. Tracy usually goes a different route and disarms angry and combative callers with patient questioning. Like a teacher talking to a child.
      So it's neat to have two different methods produce a similar result.
      And I appreciate the variety. I like Jen's calm confidence, and Phil Session's kindness. The varying personalities guarantee the show will continue far into the future. And we all have favorites, but I don't really think there IS a "best" host.

    I love how they continually cornered Brojo to support his own position that a god exists and he couldn't do it. All he tried to do was add positions to atheism which have nothing to do with atheism and attack those and he even failed at that. He even said at one point that there are no brute facts. Really? The Earth doesn't orbit the Sun? Not a brute fact? This is how deluded theists brains have become to justify their positions.

      @The Antagonizer I don't like absolutes. Choosing one over the other makes a big difference, one says that we keep searching for the answer, the other says we give up and attribute all we don't CURRENTLY know to some mystical being that was created for just that reason, because people gave up searching for the truth.

    • @StannisHarlock
      @StannisHarlock 5 лет назад +3

      @@jlsc4125 A lot of people are more emotional than cerebral, so they'll often yield to tradition over reason. There are also the ones who are just victims of religious indoctrination. The particle argument used in this video is a derogatory product of their need to satisfy their emotional attachments and indoctrination. God won't back up their arguments and beliefs, so their arguments are often fallacious in the attempt to make up for the fact that the supreme being their ancestors, and children, may have spent so much of their time on their knees for, won't back them up.
      Lastly, it's also just easier to dismiss doing the leg work necessary to discover what is true, in favor of the lazy option of bowing down to ancient documents.

    Love you guys so much, but I'm a little concerned about the part of the discussion where a point was made that some people with schizophrenia do not need medication. I am not schizophrenic myself but I have a very close long-time friend who is and it is my understanding from speaking to her about this issue that refusing necessary medication is a common problem among those with schizophrenia. I worry that reinforcing the idea that those suffering from auditory hallucinations can get by without treatment is harmful because there may be viewers with schizophrenia who understand their hallucinations are just hallucinations one day, and then the next day not be able to distinguish between their hallucinations and reality. My friend stays on constant low grade medication but sometimes has to check herself into the hospital and increase medication for periods of time because her schizophrenic episodes temporarily worsen. She always has some symptoms that she is aware of but sometimes her symptoms increase and require more care than her normal prescription. It is the lower grade medication that helps her to identify when her episodes are about to require that additional level of help. Without it, she would not have the awareness. I don't know if this is the case for every schizophrenic, but it isn't uncommon for hallucinations to come in cycles of severity. A non-medicated schizophrenic may not be able to recognize their condition is cycling into more severe territory where medication is absolutely necessary. So I hope there was no one listening who will decide to cease medication based on the idea that they can always manage their hallucinations without meds.

    • @KD-ou2np
      @KD-ou2np 2 года назад

      Everytime I've ever heard of someone who is schizophrenic going off their meds it sounds like it goes really really badly... and the people I hear about who are schizophrenic, or bipolar who say they are doing great off their meds usually come off as manic and delusional. Its so sad.

    In reference to the homophobic email:
    Natural selection does not require our help.
    Behaviors that have no positive impact on the reproduction of a population will generally not be selected for. Other behavioral traits (likely including homosexuality as well as other atypical sexual traits) have a neutral impact on the reproduction of population groups. Either neutral or negative, no action is required on individuals that have these behavioral traits. If their behavior has a net negative impact on reproduction the frequency of their genes will simply decrease or disappear from the general populations gene pool.
    It's also fair to mention that, if this is not already the case, that sexual behaviors that we consider atypical may actually have a net positive effect on the reproduction of the population and that productive sexual behavior among humans could eventually become non binary as it has in other species.

    Brojo doesn't know what atheism is and neither do most people. Brojo and most people do not seem to understand that atheism does not make a claim. The only thing that atheism says is "we don't know what's going on". That is not a claim. To say I don't know is not a claim and therefore does not require a burden of evidence. To say I don't know and therefore I'm not convinced that you do requires no burden of evidence. Atheism makes no claim and therefore has no burden of evidence. The uneducated and ignorant masses do not understand this about atheism.

Always really good with the customer service because just always level and friendly. Get yelled at and people think i should be mean or grumpy but it's just business. If you fight then you lose so there is no reason to fight and if you get hostile to anyone it impacts their experience negatively which also affects work and the perspective of how well i perform.

    • @KD-ou2np
      @KD-ou2np 2 года назад +1

      @@chaosryans APD, antisocial personality disorder is what people we typically calls sociopaths get diagnosed with. There are actually treatment methods for these people, and although they may never feel empathy like most human beings do, they are not automatically evil. A big thing that pops up for them is they sometimes attempt to manipulate people socially.
      I don't know if you have that or not. It seems pretty extreme to claim you don't have emotions or empathy. Feelings crappy and depressed can suppress a lot of our emotions and empathetic feelings. If we have a lot of self hate and little internal empathy for our own pain, then it can be very difficult to feel empathy for others. Also, if you never see or learn expressions of emotion/empathy from the people who raise you, or who you spend your time around, that can affect you as well. And lastly, if you have autism that affects the way you experience social cues and things around you, and it can make you feel really different from everyone else and like you have trouble connecting.
      Diagnosing kids younger than 10 with bipolar or other disorders is considered bad practice to a lot of psychiatrists. You might be on the spectrum, you might have major depressive disorder, or bipolar. You may a combination of those issues that compound to make life that much harder. Only you and your doctor can figure that out. I hope you keep trying to figure out what you are dealing with. Most people you meet will have difficulty understanding what you are going through, but believe it or not there are people out there who have experienced the things you experience... and they might have empathy for you, you might be able to learn from their experiences. That is one big thing a diagnosis can help you with.

  • @OneOnOne1162

    Personally, I think the distinction between "religion" and "cult" is one more of degree than anything else. I don't think they're the same, period. But I do think one is the very extreme version of the other.
    Edit: Like, take for example the thing about religions and cults controlling who you associate with. In a cult that might be actually keeping you inside by using financial manipulation, heavy emotional manipulation, etc. in a religion though you'll hear things like "atheists are sinners" and might be kind of shamed or reprimanded if you associate with them. The first is just a very extreme version of the other, but both are trying to control who you associate with (and specifically so that you can't be lead away from the organization). Or the preacher thing Tracie mentioned. The cult leader pretends she speaks for god, so do the preachers. The difference is just that the people listening don't feel as compelled to believe one as the other or not to the same degree.

    I submit the following proof that there is no all powerful omni-benevolent god:
    1. Assuming God is omnipotent, and omniscient, benevolent, and he also wants to expand his flock.
    2. One day God decided to kill a parent, one of his own, a believer, because he can, or because he needed another angel or whatever unknowable reason he may have - and left two children to be raised by the other parent, a known life-long unconverted unbeliever.
    3. Then that remaining parent taught those children to think for themselves, and they grew to have no belief in God. If he exists and is omni he of course knew all this ahead of time.
    4. So God deliberately reduced his own flock, or is not omni-all, or both - so is not God.
    5. Therefore God does not exist.
