As a Canon shooter I was planning to get a C70 but really couldn't justify double the money for working autofocus alone. I've only had the 6k Pro for a week but i've already fallen in love with the image. Agree with everything you said.
That's a solid option for sure! I've been really happy with the pocket 6k pro. If you don't need autofocus, 10 stops of ND, or really care about the speedbooster then the pocket 6k pro can't be beat!
i feel like c70 is a great camera for doc, events, and run n gun. i think canon does not market their sub $7500 cameras (c200 era prices) for film making or studio production much. Of course it is capable in the right hands but missing some flexibility and conveniences. the fact they left off raw and sdi completely shows that.
@@RayValdezPhotography Run & gun... events... docs only? You only have to look back a few years ago to a guy who shot a self-financed feature movie on the C300 ( only 1080! There is sound design, location, talent, script, lighting, costume, makeup, literally so many things. Here's the film I'm speaking of- it's called BLUE RUIN and it's amazing. Great video! 2 things... 1. You have these cameras, but you still use your c500 as your A cam. Why is that? 2. You said you sometimes prefer to use PL glass instead of RF (or EF). Why?
The thing is that on the BM cameras if you want to have more latitude in the shadows you have to shoot in the second native ISO, but you'll lose latitude in the highlights, and you have to think about it before pressing the record button! The canon is really better in this situation

I've been looking at both the 6K Pro and C70 as my "next camera". And this video has helped me get one step closer to choosing between the two. The price difference is significant. But, the one thing you showed with the C70, is that you can underexpose a shot and still get clean shadows. That's a pretty big deal, especially for run and gun scenarios, which is what most indie filmmakers like myself are looking for. And the 2-10 stops of built-in ND filtering is huge. As an owner of the BMPCC4K, you'd think it would be an easy choice. But, the C70 offers so many features, like autofocus, which is a major benefit when you need to grab that one last shot for the day. Thanks again, for this video. It was quite helpful.
@@GriffinConway Considering the investment, I will definitely try renting them. Especially the C70 since I'm pretty familiar with working with BRAW, etc. The clean shadows in underexposed shots from the C70 is quite impressive. Anyway. Thanks again.

Great analysis of the two cameras. Just rented the C70 on a wedding and the autofocus was critical along with the ability to punch things up a couple of stops with no loss of quality. If those things don't come into play for you, the 6K Pocket Cinema Camera does look like an incredible quality bargain. As we've all learned over the years, there is no perfect camera at a perfect price point. Many times, hard choices must be made.
Yes, the reception area was a very dark room with bright sunlight occasionally blasting in through one row of windows on the far side. Once again, the auto focus did a great job on things like tracking people in the bridal party, switching to the next person rapidly and smoothly as they walked by. Nothing still beats Sony for super dark conditions, but you really have to ask yourself how often you are going to be shooting that way and if great improvements by other brands are good enough 90 pc of the time. Will be sticking to renting until I see the sum total of everything Canon releases through the rest of the year. Might rent an FX3 next just to play with the latest Sony tech a little and try it out, really want to compare color grading efforts and results. RF lenses were fantastic as well, but quite a $$$$ commitment. Want to test more of my EFs with the adapter next time too around auto-focus and handling.

C70 has AVC which is much easier to edit than the HEVC of the R5. However, newer Intel and Apple processors have codecs for HEVC and should be able to edit R5 footage with no problem.
That's true for sure. Although the c70 has smaller overall files in most modes, so I figured it was kind of a neutral point and the video was already getting long haha. Thanks for watching though!

I have a questions about the speed booster - I've used Metabones and had great results - I see they have an R>EF speed booster adaptor too... is it better or any different that the canon? thanks, great review
Here’s my takeaway after having both: Get the BMPCC6K Pro for: 1. BRAW 2. Price 3. Bright screen Get the C70 for: 1. Autofocus 2. Battery life (I can’t stress this enough!!!!!) 3. Ergonomics/buttons/customizability 4. Slow mo 120p
My list is basically the same, with the one addition for the c70 being the speedbooster “full frame look”. Makes it a perfect B cam for my c500 Mark ii
can someone explain to me what he mean by "4 stops under" at 3:20? How do you measure how "under exposed" you are by these "stops" he speaks of? Sorry fore the noob question. Just want to learn more.
Hey Antonio! I went from “proper exposure” and reduced the overall exposure by 4 stops of light. I would RUclips for “what is a stop of light” and I think there will be some good videos explaining things
From what I've read elsewhere, another one of the major Plus points for the C70 is how simple the work flow is - no need for RAW processing, or proxies, etc. How did you find the work flow efficiency to compare between these cameras?
Excellent review man! I got the Pocket 6K Pro almost a month ago and I'm loving it, but as you wisely said, it's a camera that needs light, otherwise you get lots of noise even though having a dual ISO. I was in love with the C70 for a long time, then the FX6 came out and I changed my opinion, mostly cause its lowlight capabilities, but they're both amazing cameras. The 6K pro fitted on my budget for the moment! Thanks indeed!
@@colinthomas2525 I use 400 for daylight and in low light I may use 800. I never go all the way to 3200, but I've discovered, now using it for more than a year that the pocket 6K Pro isn't bad at all in low light conditions!
@@topicruben watch the video I link for the best way to shoot the pocket 6k with no noise. Matteo Bertoli shoots beautiful footage and never has a problem with noise. It does have noise for sure but I actually can’t believe how well it disappears with Neat Video plugin. Like, completely clean. It must be the type of noise it presents.
nice comparison... I'm planning to buy a C70 to use as an A cam for my 1DX... will they be easy to match? also, the audio level in your video is very low.
Which series 1dx do you have? Mark iii matches well in raw. You can check the comparison video I have on my channel. The Mark ii is in a different category but with the right settings and some finessing in post you can make it work
I don’t think comparing two cameras with a LUT in the mix is the best way to go. Ideally, they should’ve used the manufacturer’s LUT so people can get a better idea. But here, with the LUT involved, what’s really being evaluated is the LUT itself, which might not translate well from one camera to another for obvious reasons.
I'm a firm believer in not using external recording options as your main recording. I only like using internal cards. So in the case of the pocket 6k pro, I use sandisk cfast 2.0 cards
as an aspiring cinematographer / filmmaker I am deciding in which cinema camera to get as my first, either c70 or the rumoured c200 mkii. I am cool with c70 but it doesn't shoot raw. As someone who has been shooting 8 bit video on a 5d mkiii, I really wanna experience raw footage and start getting into the raw workflow.
thanks nice video. it will always be the same, until Blackmagic Design dont up sensor , the full frame are the best in low light. I am waiting for my Z6 ii to be modified to leave the BRAW and that will make a big change compared to the ProRes RAW
how friendly is the codec that comes from the C70? I heard it can be a nightmare to edit with in Premiere/Final Cut. I have the BMPCC6k and absolutely love everything about it, but I need a second cam for an upcoming wedding.
I've used both of those cameras. BM6k is impressive but the crop and jitter at high speed is unacceptable. I also noticed some digital noise on some textures.
Another awesome comparison I've been wanting to see! Here for those C70 clean shadows as well. That being said, if I felt I did not need AF, I would've have already gone with the 6K Pro.
With the battery grip it is about 3 hours, which is close to the 3 hours from the canon bpa-30 battery, but the battery grip makes the bmpcc 6k pro pretty bulky compared to the c70
Is the lack of image stabilization on the 6kPro pretty noticeable? I'm coming from a GH5 and am torn between the Black Magic and the a7s3 as my next camera.
I have both a BMPCC 4k and 6k pro. If Blackmagic ever comes out with a 6k pro cube with autofocus it'll be lights out for all other camera manufacturers.
Iso 400 does not jump to 800 with a speedbooster. Speedboosters are based on apeture stops of light, ISO is a film grain rating. You are gaining stops, not ISO
I was a Canon owner for years even though clients ask me to shoot on REDs. Until I bought a Lumix GH4 and began pairing it with the RED Scarlet, up to the point I could use my Lumix for everything, even low budget full features, and currently I'm thinking between the BGH1 and the Pocket 6K, which clearly seems to be the winner.
The pocket 6k pro is a great camera. Occasionally I have clients that ask me to shoot on Red, but usually I find the ones that ask for it usually have budget for rentals to go with it. Tough to beat that 6k pro image for the price though!
@@GriffinConway in an odd way, the gh6 reminds me of a mini version of the C70. Smaller, lighter cheaper. Needs an XLR adapter and no NDs. Still, there is something about the two that makes them feel similar.
That is true. I didn't really test 4k 60p for this one because there was already a lot in this video and the pocket 6k crops the sensor at 4k 60p so it gets a little complicated IMO
Wow the bmpc6kpro is my dream camera. I'm a video and photography enthusiast hoping to learn more and take it up at some point. Thanks for this excellent video.
I am a person who don't normally leave a comment. But because you tell me something about the c70 camera that no other RUclips channel told me about. Which is the low compression
enjoy watching all your videos :) i believe youtube compression is taking away black color information for example 2:30 black jeans, 2:35 your t-shirt and backdrop color fall offs.
RUclips compression is never great. Also changes depending on your browser, and also how the screen is calibrated (iPhones for example are notoriously contrasty)
Not a stupid question at all! They don’t make a speedbooster for the pocket 6k pro. The reason a speed booster is available for the c70 is because it is RF mount and has a shorter flange distance
I’m doing music videos, documentaries & short films which of the cameras you Recommend? I am strongly leaning towards the C70 as I am a Canon User since 2019
C70 will definitely be better for music videos. The 6K Pro should be fine for docs and short films. The C70 should be a little better for those things but good enough is good enough and C70 costs more than twice as much.
Both would be good for those uses. Do you want/need a speedbooster, full sensor 4K 120p, or plan on using pl mount glass? Then go c70. If not I would go pocket 6k pro
Great video and thanks for the info... but I really had a hard time listening to the audio, the clearity and the texture of the voice, along with the volume,... great visuals anyway.

Took the words right out of my brain!!!
Thanks so much for watching Joshua! Glad you enjoyed it.
yup just yesterday i was hoping that someone would make this video!! awesome!
The pocket has dual ISO. If you shot in the lowlight ISO bracket (dual iso switches at 1000 iso) then you would get much better results
For sure. It's hard to show everything in the video so I kind of skipped that part
This review and comparison was so well done. Zero fluff, all facts. Thanks man!
Thanks for watching Edward! Appreciate it bro!
No speed booster for BMCC ?? No possibility of mounting PL lenses on BMCC ?? It is true?
Great analysis of the two cameras. Just rented the C70 on a wedding and the autofocus was critical along with the ability to punch things up a couple of stops with no loss of quality. If those things don't come into play for you, the 6K Pocket Cinema Camera does look like an incredible quality bargain. As we've all learned over the years, there is no perfect camera at a perfect price point. Many times, hard choices must be made.
Did you find the AF to be reliable in a variety of lighting and moving-subject scenarios?
Great video as usual! Have the C70 coming this week to be my c500ii b-cam. Can't wait!
That's awesome Fraser! You will love it! Are you getting the speedbooster too? It's honestly such a good match between the two
@@GriffinConway ya since I only have EF lens and want to match the full frame look. Ordered the 50mm 1.4. hoping it matches the L 35 and 85, but we shall see if I should have went 1.2!
@@frasermacmannis614 I have the 1.2 and have used the 1.4...unfortunately neither are a perfect match for sharpeners and contrast to the 35 1.4 ii and 85 1.4 is...but both will be a decent match
You can recover highlights on the Pocket 6k even better by avoiding using luts and grading with color management with wide gamut. Cheers
Totally makes sense. That's why I wanted to show my process of how I went about recovering the highlights, because it's not a perfect process, it's just what I'm used to. Thanks for watching though Lee!
@@GriffinConway Gotcha. I just wanted to make sure that people know that there's more ways to grade and recover information. Good video, cheers
What a time
question, using one C70 and one 6K, how hard is it to color grade to get close to the same
Can you edit the C70 video files with smooth playback without the need to transcode as you do with the Canon EOS R5 high quality files?
Yep! The c70 is so much easier to edit and doesn't require transcoding like the R5 files.
C70 has AVC which is much easier to edit than the HEVC of the R5.
However, newer Intel and Apple processors have codecs for HEVC and should be able to edit R5 footage with no problem.
Which video editing software do you use for your RUclips videos?
Adobe premiere pro
@@GriffinConway Thanks Griffin. I've been using Camtasia and feeling its not the best solution.
Which speedbooster you rockin with the C70?
Nice comparison! I'm amazed at the IQ from the 6k Pro. What beach was this shot at, Coronado, San Clemente?
Ya the 6k pro is a beast! It was Newport Beach....close though!
Storage media for the 6KPRO is also much more affordable (Samsung T5s) than the most popular SD cards for the C70 (Prograde 128GBs).
That's true for sure. Although the c70 has smaller overall files in most modes, so I figured it was kind of a neutral point and the video was already getting long haha. Thanks for watching though!
Great video! thanks, I have a 6K pro now and am looking to replace it purchase a c70 and use the 6k as a B-cam
If the BMPCC 6k PRO had a mount with a lesser flange distance I would have been beyond delighted. I want to use an array of different glass.
For sure. I have the Canon Dream Lens on my shelf that I can’t use on my 6K Pro sigh.
the speedbooster doesnt give you shallower DOF, the zooming in does
I just rented a 6k pro for a film shoot.. completely blown away. Massive upgrade from the 6k, and honestly I am looking to buy one
Wow! This is one of the best comparison video I've ever seen! Straight to the point with lot of information and beautiful images. Kudos!
Great review, I'm a Canon shooter, C300mkii and R right now - but was considering the BMPCC 6K, not anymore. I have a questions about the speed booster - I've used Metabones and had great results - I see they have an R>EF speed booster adaptor too... is it better or any different that the canon? thanks, great review
Here’s my takeaway after having both:
Get the BMPCC6K Pro for:
1. BRAW
2. Price
3. Bright screen
Get the C70 for:
1. Autofocus
2. Battery life (I can’t stress this enough!!!!!)
3. Ergonomics/buttons/customizability
4. Slow mo 120p
My list is basically the same, with the one addition for the c70 being the speedbooster “full frame look”. Makes it a perfect B cam for my c500 Mark ii
@@GriffinConway I would add the ability to adapt multiple lenses and natively use RF.
PL especially, but also FD, Nikon, etc.
can someone explain to me what he mean by "4 stops under" at 3:20? How do you measure how "under exposed" you are by these "stops" he speaks of? Sorry fore the noob question. Just want to learn more.
Hey Antonio! I went from “proper exposure” and reduced the overall exposure by 4 stops of light. I would RUclips for “what is a stop of light” and I think there will be some good videos explaining things
From what I've read elsewhere, another one of the major Plus points for the C70 is how simple the work flow is - no need for RAW processing, or proxies, etc. How did you find the work flow efficiency to compare between these cameras?
The 6K Pro is even simpler when you use ProRes.
BRAW takes more work but it is better than most other RAW codecs.
In my opinion they are both equally simple and easy to work with. The c70 plays back a little smoother in premiere, but in resolve they are both great
Excellent review man!
Lots of good options out there, and the pocket 6k pro is really solid! Glad you are loving it
What iso did you shoot at? 800/1000 for day light and lowlight and 1250 max for low light is recommended I believe.
Edited
@@colinthomas2525 I use 400 for daylight and in low light I may use 800. I never go all the way to 3200, but I've discovered, now using it for more than a year that the pocket 6K Pro isn't bad at all in low light conditions!
@@topicruben watch the video I link for the best way to shoot the pocket 6k with no noise. Matteo Bertoli shoots beautiful footage and never has a problem with noise. Also he never overexposes but slightly underexposes and then lifts shadows if needed. It’s worth a watch.
ruclips.net/video/5-FVNKpvKmU/видео.html
It does have noise for sure but I actually can’t believe how well it disappears with Neat Video plugin. Like, completely clean. It must be the type of noise it presents.
How did you get C70 with 2500?!!! It costs almost 4900 on Amazon now..
nice comparison... I'm planning to buy a C70 to use as an A cam for my 1DX... will they be easy to match? also, the audio level in your video is very low.
Which series 1dx do you have? Mark iii matches well in raw. You can check the comparison video I have on my channel. The Mark ii is in a different category but with the right settings and some finessing in post you can make it work
@@GriffinConway Thanks for your reply, I have a 1DX2. Saw your comparison video as well. Thanks, you got my sub. :)
Is the 6-stops ND Filter enough for the brightest day at 1.8?
1.8 might be overexposed a little bit at the brightest time of day. For that a 10 stop nd might be better
I don’t think comparing two cameras with a LUT in the mix is the best way to go. Ideally, they should’ve used the manufacturer’s LUT so people can get a better idea. But here, with the LUT involved, what’s really being evaluated is the LUT itself, which might not translate well from one camera to another for obvious reasons.
what program are you using to edit ?
Mostly premiere pro. Occasionally I use davinci resolve
What about media? Do you suggest coast cards or add drives? That’s what’s holding me back from the bmpcc.
Yo! Want to find out, with the pocket 6K what setting did you filmed on? Proress or BRAW, and which settings of Braw?
B raw 5:1
how friendly is the codec that comes from the C70? I heard it can be a nightmare to edit with in Premiere/Final Cut. I have the BMPCC6k and absolutely love everything about it, but I need a second cam for an upcoming wedding.
Thanks brotha, wish I could nab the c70 but imma settle for the 6k pro and prob still be blown away
I've used both of those cameras. BM6k is impressive but the crop and jitter at high speed is unacceptable. I also noticed some digital noise on some textures.
Keep in mind that even with noise, Davinci Resolve can fix noise so well, and it comes free with the Pocket 6k.
Another awesome comparison I've been wanting to see! Here for those C70 clean shadows as well. That being said, if I felt I did not need AF, I would've have already gone with the 6K Pro.
Thanks Dave! If you don’t need AF and don’t care about the speedbooster “full frame” look, then the 6k pro is a no brainer for sure
Also the battery life in the C70 is a huuuge advantage over the black magic
With the battery grip it is about 3 hours, which is close to the 3 hours from the canon bpa-30 battery, but the battery grip makes the bmpcc 6k pro pretty bulky compared to the c70
Is the lack of image stabilization on the 6kPro pretty noticeable? I'm coming from a GH5 and am torn between the Black Magic and the a7s3 as my next camera.
Thanks for the review Griffin !! Currently got my eyes on this
Nice! Which one are you leaning towards?
Hi. What canon speed booster do you recommend for the C70
I use the canon branded one
Why cant you use PL lenses on BMPCC ?
You can't use a PL to EF adapter on the 6k pro?
One more plus (maybe two plus) of Canon c70 it's good level of noise on high iso, and more reliability, unlike on bmpcc 6k pro. Right?
I have both a BMPCC 4k and 6k pro. If Blackmagic ever comes out with a 6k pro cube with autofocus it'll be lights out for all other camera manufacturers.
Iso 400 does not jump to 800 with a speedbooster. Speedboosters are based on apeture stops of light, ISO is a film grain rating. You are gaining stops, not ISO
Great video! Really informative. Thank you!
This was very informative Griffin!
Thank you!
Love from Ghana 🇬🇭
I love the image your recording👀👀👀👀
I was a Canon owner for years even though clients ask me to shoot on REDs. Until I bought a Lumix GH4 and began pairing it with the RED Scarlet, up to the point I could use my Lumix for everything, even low budget full features, and currently I'm thinking between the BGH1 and the Pocket 6K, which clearly seems to be the winner.
The pocket 6k pro is a great camera. Occasionally I have clients that ask me to shoot on Red, but usually I find the ones that ask for it usually have budget for rentals to go with it. Tough to beat that 6k pro image for the price though!
Thanks for this excellent breakdown! Helped me make my final decision on c70.
Which camera is better for a smoker?
what lens did you have on blackmagic?
A year later now, I'd love to see you do a comparison between the gh6 and the C70.
I haven't shot with the GH6 but would like to try it out!
@@GriffinConway in an odd way, the gh6 reminds me of a mini version of the C70. Smaller, lighter cheaper. Needs an XLR adapter and no NDs. Still, there is something about the two that makes them feel similar.
Griff, What do you film your in studio interviews with? Nice look.
Thank you. Usually c70 or c500 mark ii, lit with an an Aputure 120d and 36” light dome. I think on this one I used the c70
Great comparison video. You touched on all the most relevant points.
Thank you for watching!
I think your underexposure tests need a mention of the caveat: The DGO sensor works best at native ISO and
That is true. I didn't really test 4k 60p for this one because there was already a lot in this video and the pocket 6k crops the sensor at 4k 60p so it gets a little complicated IMO
@@GriffinConway 60 FPS has the same DR as 30 FPA but the codecs are not as solid.
It is over 60 FPS where the dynamic range loses 3 EV.
@@robertm3951 exactly
3:31 The BM looked better IMO... Way more detail in the shadows
The tradeoff being a lot of noise though
@@dna8269 not if you use the proper iso for low light situations. 1250 or 3200 much cleaner .
I came from the BM and went C70. I'll never go back. The buttons and the AF alone just makes it way more of an enjoyable experience.
Ya the c70 shooting experience is hard to beat!
Wow the bmpc6kpro is my dream camera. I'm a video and photography enthusiast hoping to learn more and take it up at some point. Thanks for this excellent video.
Thanks for watching!
I am a person who don't normally leave a comment. But because you tell me something about the c70 camera that no other RUclips channel told me about. Which is the low compression
6:53 Yeah you do
😂😂😂😂
enjoy watching all your videos :)
i believe youtube compression is taking away black color information for example 2:30 black jeans, 2:35 your t-shirt and backdrop color fall offs.
RUclips compression is never great. Also changes depending on your browser, and also how the screen is calibrated (iPhones for example are notoriously contrasty)
What about editing performance? I love B-Raw, so easy to edit. How is the C70 on the timeline? Hopefully it's better than DSLRs and GoPros.
C70 footage is smoother for me in premiere on my maxed out 2019 macbook pro, but in resolve they are both solid
Great video Griffin. Thanks for all the info and hope you keep growing the channel man.
Thanks so much Axel! Really appreciate that!
I like these kind of comparison, straight to the point, going to the topic we all care about. Thanks!
Thank you! That's what I like in comparison videos as well!
Maybe its a stupid question. but why i cant use a speedbooster with BMPCC ?
Not a stupid question at all! They don’t make a speedbooster for the pocket 6k pro. The reason a speed booster is available for the c70 is because it is RF mount and has a shorter flange distance
@@GriffinConway Thank . But maybe in future anyone realise booster for 6k pro ?
No idea
I’m doing music videos, documentaries & short films which of the cameras you Recommend? I am strongly leaning towards the C70 as I am a Canon User since 2019
C70 will definitely be better for music videos.
The 6K Pro should be fine for docs and short films.
The C70 should be a little better for those things but good enough is good enough and C70 costs more than twice as much.
Both would be good for those uses. Do you want/need a speedbooster, full sensor 4K 120p, or plan on using pl mount glass? Then go c70. If not I would go pocket 6k pro
Or autofocus as well
Did the black magic have a speed booster?
Great video and thanks for the info... but I really had a hard time listening to the audio, the clearity and the texture of the voice, along with the volume,... great visuals anyway.
Good review, I think the C70 is doing well, but thinking of getting the Sony a1 since I do photography too `
That’s a great option as well, and arguably the best hybrid out right now. Are you already invested in any of the lenses?
I love the c70 just wish the af was better in low light. it matches the eos r5 pretty much perfectly for weddings.
