How realistic is medieval Spain in Crusader Kings 3?

  • High medieval Iberia saw plenty of brotherly feuds, murderous schemes, frustratingly indecisive wars and complex inheritance disputes, so it is not surprising that this part of the map is portrayed very well in a game that is famous for all these dynamics.
We decided to dig a bit deeper, looking at the history of the characters depicted in the game. Be it Ferdinand the Great or the famous El Cid, Crusader Kings III's depiction of medieval Iberia hints to uncountable fascinating stories of the past.

The actual problem with the Iberian peninsula in CK2 and CK3 is the lack of fuero mechanics that could represent more realistically the way the Reconquista worked. Instead of willy nilly giving land to big vassals, the newly taken muslim fiefdoms were given to peasants and local elected councils, who in turn gave military suppor to the crown and raided and counter-raided the enemy (besides getting a much more lax taxation). So instead of being forced to give your land away to counts, it should be minor mayors and city-focused governments the ones acting down there, but alas, not easy to represent in vanilla at all.

@@Emanon... The Iberia DLC is good, but it still lacks settlement mechanics needed to correctly represent how the Reconquista worked.
In the christian frontier government and society should be centered around free, "knighted" landowners (caballeros villanos), semi-democratic city councils and settled farmers, with maybe one or two big vassals, but the later not as relevant as the other frontier populations.

I can't understand how Paradox made a medieval Iberian DLC and completely excluded Galician-Portuguese lyric, the most prestigious poems of the time in Iberia, which kings themselves wrote, from Portugal to Castille and beyond

    • @samuellennon1984

They did include the lyrics. It's a cultural identity that you can get if you reform castellian or any of the other cultures native to Spain. And it gives some VERY OP poems that you can put in your royal court. I actually think Galician and Portuguese start off with it at the start. (Well Galician does, since Portuguese doesn't exist in ck3 unless you form it through a decision)

I recently started an Urraca game so this was a really cool video to stumble upon! I didn't think she'd actually have a role in history haha. I murdered Alfonso almost immediately but he managed to bear a little girl in time. While I was taking care of Garcia and becoming queen of Galicia, Sancho somehow died to his wounds from battling against the Basques, so I only had my little niece to worry about. She was smart though and avoided me until she was twelve! After finally getting rid of her I crowned Urraca rightful queen of all three realms as the oldest of the siblings, and then rewarded Elvira's loyalty by marrying her to the king of France :)

You should have included how Alfonso's daughter,
Urraca (not to be confused with her aunt Urraca), was the last Empress/Queen of the Jimenez dynasty to rule Castilla y Leon. After her death the Castilian House of Burgundy (House Ivrea) came into power in Castilla y Leon.
Since one of the other guys mentioned Henry Duke of Portugal (another Burgundian), you could also add that he was the cousin of Raymond of Burgundy (son of Count William of Burgundy) husband of Empress/queen Urraca.
Funny enough after House Ivrea was replaced by the illegitimate bastard branch Trastamara, the dynasty would once again by replaced by another family in Burgundy. This time by the duke of Burgundy, Philip Habsburg.
The real challenge would be getting House Ivrea to the throne 😆.
Personally I play with Sancho and get rid of all the family and punish the Ordoñez family as well.

I started a playthrough right before watching this, I selected Sancho, my character married the duchess of Tuscany Matilda and had 4 sons. I first invaded and won against my character's brother who was the king of Glacia. After I was preparing for war against the king of Leon but hurried after an assassination attempt from that very king. After which I declared war and won but quickly went to war again so I can get him arrested, during this period, Sancho which while not confirmed since Ironman mode but I believed was assassinated by the former king of Leon, his eldest son became king of Castille along with the next 2 sons becoming the other 2 kings. I then invaded Navarra with a claim I kept as the new Castille king and won, I then found out Glacia was split apart due to a faction ending the kingdom, Alfonso then usurped my character's younger brother's title and became king of Leon again, after which I declared war with Alfonso and my characters brothers and mother Matilda aided me militarily and won the war. This time with charges of holy crimes, I went to war again and this time got Alfonso arrested, after which I forced him in the dungeon, and he died about a month or 2 later in the dungeon. I did some minor wars like using a war to get the former glacian king/younger brother of my current character and aided Matilda of Tuscany in an independence war against the HRE which we won.

The real problem here is that you cannot force Muslim kingdoms to pay parias to you. While northern christian administration was very feudal-like and inefficient, Muslim state traditions were very alive and, despite the breakdown of the Caliphate, they still functioned at a smaller scale in the taifas. To avoid raid and conquest, Taifa emirs resorted to paying paria taxes to Christian kings, and these parias were one of the biggest reasons for conflict between central powers and smaller nobility. Nobles saw the conquest of the Muslim south as a way to amass wealth and land, while kings (obviously opposing the growth of aristocratic power) also wanted to preserve these cash cows in the South, but they also needed the nobles happy and well, so that they would have an army with which to threaten the emirs (who would not pay the paria tribute otherwise).
Absent the paria tribute, the main cause for peace or conflict in post-year 1000 Iberia is gone.
