Ive been lucky with mine i have a luminous green goni, ive had it around 8 months and at 1st it was completly retracted until i found the sweet spot in the tank i put it low to middle in the tank dead center under the ilimenair leds. For flow its hit indirectly from the second flow on my gyre. To be honest is all i do is hit it ocasionally with the left over juice from defrosting mysis, i just put in a baster and here and now squirt it when extended, the polops are extended around 5 inches so its working so far and its probably the brightest coral i have next to my orange and green scolly 👍
+Dan Callus That's awesome! I tried for weeks to find the sweet spot to no avail. I actually did try the middle on the sand as well...didn't work for me but I think that is the best spot for most coral like this. Great job!
We are going to get you with the woman jokes, Steve! LOL!! I agree, the term LFS gets on my nerves as well.. however, I've had to use it talking to people so much I catch myself saying it now too, haha. I have had my flowerpot about a year now and it seems to be thriving. I know that it doesn't like my water being too clean and it loves reef roids, but the biggest change for it was after I started using brightwell trace elements. That's what really changed it. I don't know if it's the iodine or just the way everything is leveled out in the mix, but they love it! I just dose my tank with it once a week and I really think all my corals do better with it. Good luck if you get another one:)
+Ashley L Ashley, you're one of my best, even though you're a woman. XOXO. Such great info here! You convinced me to get another flowerpot as $ allows and I will try what you suggested. Looking forward to it.
+abreezeducttesting I'm sorry to hear about your losses. I don't know why the ich hasn't gotten to them yet but I'm sure it will. If you don't have a quarantine tank, please get one. Check out my videos or buy my eBook on Amazon. I'm not trying to sell you on it. It will really help you get rid of ich forever. It's under $3. Good luck. That sux
+Rotter Tube Reef yes I just bought the book today I kind of wanted to know what I'm up against for the ick parasite. that's what I was thinking too it's probably going to kill the Wrasse and the chromis. so will kill all the fish in your experience. yes quarantine tank before adding any more fish. I've been sugar dosing I like the results but the water is always cloudy. getting ready to shoot a video on my bio pellet reactor don't know why it's not working pellets are turning red have you ever seen this before should be uploaded in 20 minutes or so
+abreezeducttesting Yes, the water will be cloudy with sugar dosing, as well as vodka dosing. The biopellets have been known to make the water a little cloudy as well. This depends on how much you dose of course. I dose 1 teaspoon sugar per day per 60 gallons and it's a little cloudy but works great. This is why I went with the marine pure block for nitrates. I have not seen red biopellets. Not sure what that could be. Is there any red anywhere on the inside? Thanks for buying the book. It will help you big time! Ich will kill everything eventually. Never believe anything else. People have said you will always have ich in your tank. This is completely false.
My goniopora is at ten months now and at 8 it started declining but I started target feeding it more and now it's a little better, after 8 months most people struggle to keep them for some reason I hope mine will make it
I've had great luck with my Goni. I've had it for 2 years now and it's doubled in size. I feed it reef roids once a week. But I think me not having a protein skimmer has something to do with it. I read an article that said they do best in high nutrient dirtier waters. Just my 2 cent.
+Rotter Tube Reef my nitrates are always around 5-10 ppm hard to tell with the level in the test kits. It all looks the same but I never have spikes. My routine are 10% water change every two weeks and top off with well water and prime. That's it. 2 aquaclear 50s on a 40 gallon breeder and a dozen or so zoas and one large hammer coral and 1 yellow tang that's it to the recipe lol. Wish you the best of luck!!!
+timwdv hmm interesting. Well water? sounds like a lot of metal possibly in the water, which prime won't remove....but if it works for you. interesting. I think I'll pickup another flower pot.
+timwdv wow cool. A couple friends living outside the city limits have well water and their tubs are stained black from the rust. water smells like rotten eggs too. ugh
captive raised gonis are easier to keep than wc gonis. I just got some red ones from a friend and he had them in his system for years. you really need to study this coral, its not one that you can buy and throw in the tank. every specie of goni have different care requirements.(which is misunderstood) first thing is knowing which one u have.
thanks for commenting. what do you mean when you say, "it's not one that you can buy and throw in the tank." was this referring to all types or just the wc gonis?
Rotter Tube Reef yea I meant in general, that this is a coral that you have to do your hw on. it needs the right placement, light, flow and food. they can be kept in systems for years but ppl just need to do their research and they can have success with this coral
What kind of lights were you using for your flower pot coral that died after 6 months? I just bought possibly rescued one from petco when I say rescued I say this because 99.9% of their aquatics department have no clue about corals (seriously). I did some research online and "read" they are difficult to keep but few people do have success with them so after reading it's possible and seeing them very healthy for only 14.99!! I bought one. From what I understand is these guys like to eat just like me no I don't eat oyster eggs but I like to eat a lot too. My plan of attack is to feed this coral plus keep all my levels stable and hope I have success with it. The coral opened up nice for me today ( the first day I owned it) and its dark in my tank now and the flower pot is still open and it actually let me squirt some food at it which it appeard to eat it up. Holy crap I wrote a lot , anyways im on a mission to keep a happy flower pot coral in my tank, if I succeed after a month and I notice significant growth I'll make a video of the method I have been using to help others that may need some pointers on keeping theirs alive. Cool video Thanks for posting it Bobby J
thanks so much Bobby for posting a lot! i LOVE these coral and will get one again. i was using the cheap LED lighting by orbit marine. it was doing really well then died off over weeks. maybe it was my water params....i don't know. people seem to have issues with them. i read they do well with less lighting and less flow. join my FB group for saltwater aquarium care. people are posting their tanks and having discussions. link in most videos....check the most recent youtube RTR videos for the link. Steve
Have you ever had a fish turn black during quarantine? I got some very small Chromis and acclimated them for a very long time. They turned black the day after they were put in an 4 out of 5 of them died. Their heads turned completely black, i couldn't find anything online, how about you?
+mrcow51 I have never seen this with any of the fish I have quarantined. Just their heads? Were they in copper, and for how long? That shouldn't matter, just wondering.
+Rotter Tube Reef it was mainly their heads, no medicine at all. The store sg was at 1.019 and I had to raise it to 1.026 but that took almost half the day. My qt handled at 4 inch bird wrasse so I'm confused on these fish
Omg! Steve mine just die last night 😢after 6 months I'm so sad I love it so much I deep it in iodine but it don't work the next day it was all gone.😢😢😢
I agree LFS ??? It's like husbandry. What an insult to all the ladies out there. it should be called Wivangry. Wives are the ones who are the masters of taking care of all the details to a clean house. I don't know any Husband's that can keep a clean house.
+eric olsen I agree. I will never use the word husbandry...so stupid! LAME! I thought I was the only one who hated LFS. I hate saying fish store as well. I say reef store or aquarium place. Husbandry sounds very wrong and I don't know why. I think I don't like the word husband either. It just always sounded stupid to me. haha
+Merle Mitchell Thanks. Glad you enjoy them. correct, man or woman, I can't stand when someone talks BS for fear of looking stupid. Just say you don't know or you'll look into it.
Its not 100% the store clerks fault. Yes she shouldn't have given advice on something she doesn't know - but don't go buying stuff you haven't even researched yourself.
I would say it is their fault, sorry. I used to work in a petstore years ago and families would come in wanting this dog or that. Many times i would never sell a dog to someone who i felt would not take care of them or it was an impulse buy for their bratty kids. management wasn't too happy with me, oh well. i also wouldn't sell a top of the line guitar to a kid just starting out, even if the parents had the money. i would educate them. i do research and thought it would be easy like a frogspawn. they said they were easier than a frogspawn. in my experience with guitar shops and petstores and camera stores, reef stores are the most uneducated and clueless. there are exceptions but not many. it's their job to stop people and educate.
instead of saying flowerpots are hard to take care of. maybe you could give tips on how to keep them. other wise, why are you making this particular video? just sayin

Ordered mine online. I've had it six weeks and it's finally opening up. Higher salinity seems to help
awesome, great news! thanks for the tip. they are hard to keep. i may get one again.
Make sure you keep your manganese levels where they belong. It really really helps these guys.
had a question on ick...My tank has had ick for a while and now it's killed almost all my tangs , but not my chromis or my wrasse, why?

I've managed to keep mine for just over a year and just to make things even more interesting my clowns have hosted it
+MrBadboyrich1984 Awesome! Where do you have it placed in your tank?
+Rotter Tube Reef just on the sand nothing special the clowns won't let me near it lol
+MrBadboyrich1984 haha, love the clowns!
I kept one over a year back in 2007 and a 3 day power outage took it out.
Please update this coral.
Ditch the misogyny
this died after a year

Dude, smh... Anyone getting into the hobby should do RESEARCH don't depend on the flunkies at your local stores. MALE or FEMALE.
YEP!
Wish I would’ve, my Goniopora did good for 3 days, now he’s hiding for 12h, so going to test and dose if needed. Hope he’s okay
We only trust one fish store in our area. Sadly, all others have lied. More men than women though.
most do lie. now that i know a lot more than i did, i have caught many lying or just don't know. either way it sux.
instead of saying flowerpots are hard to take care of. maybe you could give tips on how to keep them. other wise, why are you making this particular video? just sayin
no one knows how to keep these. it's fact. i wanted to show it off. just sayin
I'm sure you'll delete my comment. That's fine.
never trust a womans advice. nice vid

Topical man. 🤦🏻♀️ .... that's what you said like. Clearly you have no shame

Like your video until you said it’s a women there you go....uuummmm ya some of us women do know, just like some men don’t know shit either
I have a very sarcastic personality. I actually trust women more than men. Most people don't know shit, which is why i prefer animals.
