But saying their was no one killed etc is ridiculous.. I was their, pen 3 behind the goal,13 yo, I climbed out while the game was still going on an watched many people die..but I think it was allowed to happen to change the face of football for the prem league.
Wow! What a game! Classic Liverpool-Man U battle! This is why I believe it is THE greatest rivalry in English football, and one of the greatest in world football. I looked at the stats and using the lowest gate - about 12,000 could possibly claim to be at every Man Utd home game that season. That isn't the real figure only the maximum. TV money was only under two grand a match. Most weren't though. It may be working class - but it was fickle and you rarely saw a world class talent.

It had an affect on your wardrobe,the music you listened to. In the days before they have Bournemouth v Newcastle at 12:45 on a Saturday morning, when the trains were accessible without a bank loan. I was routinely going to London with my mates at the age of 12, finding money from anywhere to go to the match as did all my mates but it wasn't extortionate to travel and watch football like today. My mate is going to the FA Cup final and his ticket is £115!! How many working class kids can afford prices like that? That's why there's zero atmosphere at grounds now? It'll just end up as an elitist sport with stadiums full of people over 30 with replica tops on looking like Xmas trees. That's the difference it's just entertainment now it used to be a culture. Sad.

Christ we had a great team. Paul Mac, Hughes, Robbo, Whiteside, all hardcore players. Remember being a young lad in Cookstown with my dad listening to it on the radio, feeling gutted when LFC equalised with a dodgy equaliser. Won the final though. Great memories. Peace and Love.

This football can’t compare to football today. Today we have 11 athletes verse 11 athletes that couldn’t physically be in better shape. These guys were great at the the time but don’t come close to our standard today.
The players might be fitter and a bit more skilful today but it’s bloody boring. Where’s the characters gone?? Plus the atmosphere was 10 times better back then, you were able to stand and watch a game with your mates and you didn’t need a university degree to buy a ticket, you either paid at the turnstiles or queued up at the clubs ticket office. Today’s football doesn’t come close to this game here.

The game in the 1980s had its good points, and there are aspects of it I miss too, but we have a tendency to filter out of our memories the bad points. In the 80s, the English game was often messy, unprofessional, cynical, unimaginative, crude, and played in dilapidated stadia that were a real threat to human life. Using the word "sanitised" as a pejorative about modern football overlooks the reality that there was a lot about the game that did need cleaning up back then.
This tie represents everything that was great about the FA Cup back when I was child. It cant be overstated how big the cup was back in the day, it was THE competition, everyone wanted to reach Wembley and win it., The semis were as big a fixture as there was, just look at the passion in those crowds. Bit of FA Cup trivia: Did you know that as here, Liverpool are (were) permitted to play FA cup semi Finals at Goodison Park but Everton are not permitted to play FA Cup Semi Finals at Anfield?

i watch these less sophisticated games and i cant help remembering how it used to be on the terraces. the crammed bodies, the stifling heat, the noise, the heathen excitement, no health and safety, the mass of bodies behind both goals, the north stand! the north stand! a 2 hour mosh pit for some games, the difficulty of trying to light a ciggy with the crowd always surging, helplessly pushing you 10 yards one way, then another, if you fell, then as if by magic, a circle ALWAYS appeared around you and you were hauled back on your feet. fuck todays sterilised game. the kids dont know what they missed.
I was on the Gwladys street terrace with my dad that day. The level of hatred and violence that day was a real low point for me. Each corner of the ground was vacated because of the missiles being thrown - including golf balls and darts. Scuffles broke out where rival fans had infiltrated opposing sections of the ground. As much as I agree that the atmospheres were the best in those days, it was so wrong that a rivalry between two great clubs should stoop so low. This was not a match. This was a battle and it was so wrong. I was also at Hillsborough in 89 and while I miss the terraces, this era of football was beyond rivalries and it was not necessary. I went to the replay of this game and it was just as bad.
I was on the Gwladys st ,I remember fights going off all over , I particularly remember a united fan running along the bottom of the terrace waving a united flag or scarf and getting knocked out by some big lad with one punch , to this day I still think it was a Liverpool fan that had robbed a manc scarf and was showing it like a trophy.

Went to both matches and must admit it was the best week of football i had ever been to as a utd fan. The goodison game was also the most hostile match i had attended..1985 was the peak of football hooliganism what with these games, heysel, luton v millwall and birmingham v leeds..
Classic FA Cup semi final. Nasty atmosphere it seems...which is right up my street! Why the hell did they move these games from club grounds to the new Wembley? As an Evertonian I remember this day well being at the other semi final.
My mates dad was at this game and for the replay at main road as well. He's a UTD fan from Salford and he said it was a nasty atmosphere there that day. Golf balls were flying galore with fights going off all over the place. BTW - like your prodigy sticker - love from Essex.

I know there's a lot of nostalgia for football in the 1980s, but... those who were around at the time will know that this game was probably one of the nastiest in English football history, off the pitch. The replay may well have been worse. For those of you lamenting this era, you have to ask yourself if you would really prefer it. Yes, the game is rotten now. And I say this as a Liverpool supporter, and the Champions League win the other year meant nothing and was a sterile event. But the game now is, at least, safer than what it was. Games between us and United in the mid 80s were unreal. It's great looking back 35 years later and saying they were great occasions, but there were some truly awful incidents that took place as well. This season in particular was a nasty violent 9 months. The fact that my parents allowed me to attend this match with my 14 year-old mates is baffling. Given what happened that day, and what happened 4 days later, I'm surprised Social Services were not contacted.
It was evil. The stuff going on between the 2 sets of fans was unbelievable. My Dad went to this and he said it was exciting and terrifying at the same time!!

I would still take this game in a heartbeat. As I always said -it you went looking for trouble you would find it. if you didn't you would usually not even see it. 90% of games saw nothing. People exaggerate in these books written. Liverpool's mob were actually more into drinking and lifting labels. Which is ironic as on the continent we got this rep after Brussels for being hardcore but we never were. Cockneys were always the fighters.
An absolutely scintiltating match, plenty of skill & flicks, no diving or cheating, no feigning injury, brilliant atmosphere in the crowd, this is the reason I used to love football. Football died the day Rupert Murdoch, the corporate people & the prawn sandwich brigade got involved, and will all the money, the players are aloof & believe they are untouchable.
I was at this game and at the replay at Maine Road which was even better; United beating Liverpool at City's ground!. Thousands of United in The Kippax End, great standing their, in the terraces normally reserved for City's hard core support was fabulous, a great night and great times then.
Football those days was superior in every aspect - players looked better, the game much more interesting, and the playing style showed strength and artistry that has disappeared over the years.
We probably had the best record of any team against Liverpool in the late 70’s and 80’s. I would have swapped all of the victories against them for a league championship in that period though!!
I wouldn't, not a chance. Those games when we beat them and were not supposed to, made that period of football so brilliant. 1977 through till 1985. There were so many highs that made winning the FA Cup in 77, 83 and 85 so magnificent. ABL. GGMU. #GlazersOutNow

It's made how you can remember your first game live. Me and my Dad were in the old family stand. When we scored the noise scared me!! I was only 7 years old!! Bollocks to modern football. VAR crap and no atmosphere. Give me this every bloody time. Although I actually started following us in the 1983/84 season. The first thing I remember about watching United was a 4-1 victory against Coventry at Old Trafford in April 1984. On MOTD.

In the 1st we had the best atmosphere in football bar none and I include Rangers and Celtic in that ( which I can, because I went to many games in Glasgow). Unfortunately we were never quite good enough to win the League, Liverpool were a good side and hooliganism was everywhere. As a fan we were treated like Sh*** by clubs and Cops. Then there was the 2nd period, the Fergie period where success became the norm. In the early days the atmosphere was still good. Rotterdam in 91 was magnificent. But even by 99 things were not quite as good. We were so nervous and without Keane and Scholes we were not half the team. Still history shows we had the most exciting finish to a CL Final ever!! Now it's like the 3rd period. The apres Fergie period. Nothing to add really apart from #GlazersOutNow

Looking back I can't believe how bad Our (United's) keepers were back in the 80's. Bailey and Leighton were horrific. So Weak. No Wonder we kicked on once we got Schmeichel in 1991. Just like Liverpool getting Allison after years of poor keepers, just shows how important a good goalkeeper is in order to mount a Title challenge,
Definitely agree. A solid goalkeeper is essential to a good side. Schmeichel was probably the best goalkeeper in the modern football era; actually he was outstanding (Liverpool fan by the way), much better than our inconsistent David James. Like you say Allison is top quality after several average keepers (mingolet, karius, dudek were all mediocre, Reina wasn't bad though).

Danny SeventySeven - Was one of the most mental away games I ever went to. As a naive 19yr old, i took the special from Manchester to Liverpool. Bus to the ground was stoned , bottled. In the ground i saw a ball (maybe tennis), with nails pushed through on all sides, so resembling a medieval mace, hurled into our section from Liverpool fans. It was picked up and thrown back. shame on anyone who has the mentality to bring that to a game. After the game Utd fans were bottled by fans, wacked by police. I’m not trying to say it was all one set of fans instigating the violence but I was shocked by the level of hatred at that game.

Got put on a bus from Edge Hill and I can remember getting the v sign from woman in their 60s as we passed through. Got in the ground very early and initially stood on the iron railings at the back of the Park End to get a better view. As we were close to the segregation I just didn't feel safe so jumped down. What a decision that was all sorts of stuff was being thrown across with those stood on the railings in the firing line. My first game in Merseyside and a real experience. The replay was one of my favourite ever games. Incredible atmosphere and a wonder goal from Robbo.

@@redflag8970 : Correct - I bought a ticket outside the ground and was in the enclosure when it erupted soon after kick off. The cops waded in, beat us up and forced us into the Park End which was already overcrowded. Mind you, it was going off everywhere else around the ground for much of the game. I remember after the match being locked in under the Park Stand and feeling like we were all going to be crushed to death.

Classic FA Cup semi final. Nasty atmosphere it seems...which is right up my street! Why the hell did they move these games from club grounds to the new Wembley? As an Evertonian I remember this day well being at the other semi final.
My mates dad was at this game and for the replay at main road as well. He's a UTD fan from Salford and he said it was a nasty atmosphere there that day. Golf balls were flying galore with fights going off all over the place.

I know there's a lot of nostalgia for football in the 1980s, but... those who were around at the time will know that this game was probably one of the nastiest in English football history, off the pitch.
The replay may well have been worse.
For those of you lamenting this era, you have to ask yourself if you would really prefer it. Yes, the game is rotten now. And I say this as a Liverpool supporter, and the Champions League win the other year meant nothing and was a sterile event. But the game now is, at least, safer than what it was.
Games between us and United in the mid 80s were unreal. It's great looking back 35 years later and saying they were great occasions, but there were some truly awful incidents that took place as well.
This season in particular was a nasty violent 9 months.
The fact that my parents allowed me to attend this match with my 14 year-old mates is baffling. Given what happened that day, and what happened 4 days later, I'm surprised Social Services were not contacted.
It was evil. The stuff going on between the 2 sets of fans was unbelievable. My Dad went to this and he said it was exciting and terrifying at the same time!!

I would still take this game in a heartbeat. As I always said -it you went looking for trouble you would find it. if you didn't you would usually not even see it. 90% of games saw nothing. People exaggerate in these books written. Liverpool's mob were actually more into drinking and lifting labels. I was at this game and at the replay at Maine Road which was even better; United beating Liverpool at City's ground!. Thousands of United in The Kippax End, great standing their, in the terraces normally reserved for City's hard core support was fabulous, a great night and great times then.

Football those days was superior in every aspect - players looked better, the game much more interesting, and the playing style showed strength and artistry that has disappeared over the years.
We probably had the best record of any team against Liverpool in the late 70’s and 80’s. I would have swapped all of the victories against them for a league championship in that period though!!
I wouldn't, not a chance. Those games when we beat them and were not supposed to, made that period of football so brilliant. 1977 through till 1985. There were so many highs that made winning the FA Cup in 77, 83 and 85 so magnificent. ABL. GGMU. #GlazersOutNow

It's made how you can remember your first game live. Me and my Dad were in the old family stand. When we scored the noise scared me!! I was only 7 years old!! Bollocks to modern football. VAR crap and no atmosphere. Give me this every bloody time. Although I actually started following us in the 1983/84 season. The first thing I remember about watching United was a 4-1 victory against Coventry at Old Trafford in April 1984. On MOTD.

In the 1st we had the best atmosphere in football bar none and I include Rangers and Celtic in that ( which I can, because I went to many games in Glasgow). Unfortunately we were never quite good enough to win the League, Liverpool were a good side and hooliganism was everywhere. As a fan we were treated like Sh*** by clubs and Cops. Then there was the 2nd period, the Fergie period where success became the norm. In the early days the atmosphere was still good. Rotterdam in 91 was magnificent. But even by 99 things were not quite as good. We were so nervous and without Keane and Scholes we were not half the team. Still history shows we had the most exciting finish to a CL Final ever!! Now it's like the 3rd period. The apres Fergie period. Nothing to add really apart from #GlazersOutNow

Looking back I can't believe how bad Our (United's) keepers were back in the 80's. Bailey and Leighton were horrific. So Weak. No Wonder we kicked on once we got Schmeichel in 1991. Just like Liverpool getting Allison after years of poor keepers, just shows how important a good goalkeeper is in order to mount a Title challenge,
Definitely agree. A solid goalkeeper is essential to a good side. Schmeichel was probably the best goalkeeper in the modern football era; actually he was outstanding (Liverpool fan by the way), much better than our inconsistent David James. Like you say Allison is top quality after several average keepers (mingolet, karius, dudek were all mediocre, Reina wasn't bad though).

Danny SeventySeven - Was one of the most mental away games I ever went to. As a naive 19yr old, i took the special from Manchester to Liverpool. Bus to the ground was stoned , bottled. In the ground i saw a ball (maybe tennis), with nails pushed through on all sides, so resembling a medieval mace, hurled into our section from Liverpool fans. It was picked up and thrown back. shame on anyone who has the mentality to bring that to a game. After the game Utd fans were bottled by fans, wacked by police.
I’m not trying to say it was all one set of fans instigating the violence but I was shocked by the level of hatred at that game.
@@ksportz66 I took the special as well mate. There was about 8 in total, we were on the first. Got put on a bus from Edge Hill and I can remember getting the v sign from woman in their 60s as we passed through.
Got in the ground very early and initially stood on the iron railings at the back of the Park End to get a better view. As we were close to the segregation I just didn't feel safe so jumped down. What a decision that was all sorts of stuff was being thrown across with those stood on the railings in the firing line. My first game in Merseyside and a real experience.
The replay was one of my favourite ever games. Incredible atmosphere and a wonder goal from Robbo.

The cops waded in, beat us up and forced us into the Park End which was already overcrowded. Mind you, it was going off everywhere else around the ground for much of the game. I remember after the match being locked in under the Park Stand and feeling like we were all going to be crushed to death.
