Leave it to Janice to take a sign of respect as disrespectful. She thinks she is still young and gets sensitive when reminded of her age and experience.
You're so right but also it's not even an age thing. Like I'm in my 20s and people my own age will call me ma'am because it's a southern or country thing most of the time. Janice is just unhinged
I've been watching some episodes of Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency over on Luxeria's channel and it's chaos. Janice literally has less emotional intelligence that a toddler. She is a bully and way less famous than she thinks.
Ebony was literally the antithesis of angry or difficult to work with. I always thought she was funny, rolled with the punches and had a great attitude. She was hard on herself but that didn't bleed over into how she interacted with others. Tyra put an "angry black woman" stereotype on her that did not apply.
I thought Ebony was absolutely gorgeous her skin her beautiful smile. She was just so naturally beautiful I think Tyra had an issue with that. That’s why she was reaching and trying to portray Ebony as that false persona. Tyra was intimidated with how confident Ebony was with her beauty.
I really loved Ebony. She was really likable and entertaining, some pretty popular reaction gifs come from her. She was also the first lesbian on the show, even bringing her girlfriend over to the house. Unfortunately she had to deal with racism and homophobia. At the salon the hairstylists were suppose to simply shave her head, but they did a bad job while making jokes about shaving their names in. Robyn and Shannon both said they considered homosexuality a sin and were rude to Ebony's girlfriend when she visited. Robyn especially showed a lot of homophobia. Ebony was gracious and mature despite it all, absolute queen who deserved better.
Absolutely, you could see who was mature and who was not, and Ebony definitely had polite manners.. She took the program very seriously, every feedback she received from the judges, she directly implement it. It was sad to see her go after all these situations. It would have been great to see her improvements during the ANTM journey.
Actually Shannon interacted with the girlfriend and Ebony. Adriane and Shannon did a zoom call together and discussed what happened. The show really did Shannon dirty.
Also, the time when Robyn was doing praying together, Ebony was looking the camera and rolling her eyes like she said "Are you kidding me?" And later, after the praying was over she said to other girls: "This is not uh... sorority. This is not a bible program. This is modelling competition."
I've seen Ebony a few times recently, I think she lives near me here in Brooklyn. She was done so foul on this show I almost want to go up to her and apologize to her on Tyra's behalf. Tyra was so problematic
The fact that Tyra helped perpetuate the “angry Black woman” trope that plagues mostly dark-skinned Black women is awful! I felt so bad for Ebony cos I’ve seen that behavior 1st hand.
I feel like in every episode when Ebony tried to portray her confidence they tried to cut her down. I’m pretty sure she was also the one they denigrated about her makeup skills bc she was previously a makeup artist, but they gave them all cheap color girl palettes and never considered that the color payoff wasn’t going to be the same on her vs one of the white girls. Not fair, since she had to use what they gave her.
On a rewatch I was like “wait what?” in regards to this critique. Ebony was just fine. She wasn’t angry at all. After all the criticism towards her about the weirdest stuff, I don’t blame her for just walking out.
You guys must know that Ebony walked out because everyone was bunched to the side (so she just walked straight on), but after that she gave everyone gifts. She and Giselle would meet up again and really be so happy to see each other. It wasn't an angry black woman moment :)
She really had something against black girls, specially the one with darker complexions. Something Tyra did, and a lot of people are somehow unaware of, is when she went undercover as a stripper, and not only did she went on full black face, but she also got a prostethic nose to make hers look bigger. Like she was trying to insinuate that only dark skinned women do that, when I think is a job anyone can do.
Ebony was such a great person in the house. She asked everybody first if she could have a visit and she took the feedbacks from the judges very serious.
This is why Janice cannot be taken seriously with anything. Or this show. How is saying sir or ma'am "condescending" ??? When you do show respect, they say it's forced or condescending or trying too hard. When you be yourself or have a regular conversation, they think it's cockiness or not showing any respect. It's a no win situation on this show. I liked how the director defended her.
Not to defend Janice because she was 100% in the wrong, but I'm 30 and I loath when people call me ma'am. Unless you're from the south I don't understand why you would do it. I'm clearly not old and I don't find it respectful. In fact, in America people are usually aware that calling someone who isn't over 60 ma'am would probably make them feel bad so I don't understand why people do it. I don't know when the hell I became a ma'am but I don't look or dress old. I think for Robin it makes sense why she says ma'am because its normal for southerners. I live in California where it isn't normal. I don't know how old Janice was at the time this was filmed but I can understand why she wouldn't like to be called ma'am. However she shouldn't have made Robin feel bad for it
@@Jess-Rabbit exactly . I would have pulled a face if I were Janice but I wouldn’t have called her out. The model will understand when she’s in her late 20s or in her 30s and gets called m’am lol
@@Jess-Rabbit I believe Robyn is both from the south and 26 years old at the time of this filming. I get called both ma'am and miss and I just turned 36, and it's been the case since I was 17 lol. I think people get upset because of society's obsession with youth. Traditionally you're a ma'am (madam; ma dame, my lady) when you get married which long ago (and even still now for some) was early 20s. When we get upset it's because social pressure makes women think we are old/useless past a marriageable age, when it's actually intended to be a term of respect. Let's own the word as "my lady" and then feel like Victorian aristocrats 😜
I’m from the south and I moved up north to Wisconsin and I worked as a receptionist. I was told to not use air, ma’am or miss cuz they thought I was being a smart as. I was told to call everyone by their first name. It is weird. So I can see her being upset about it. Still she was rude about it and could’ve just spoke it out like a rational person instead of an argument.
@@Jess-Rabbit Well I'm 40 and I've never found 'Ma'am' to be upsetting or wrong to use. If you don't know a person's name, it's a good form of addressing someone. Especially since in the 90's & early 2,000's people would flip out if you called them "Miss" or "Mrs" instead of "Ms." So it makes sense to use 'Ma'am' as a fill in. People want to avoid someone jumping down their throat & it's respectful.
As someone born and raised in the south, like Robyn was, saying sir and ma’am to everyone is just an ingrained instinct when we’re in a situation where we need to be polite. It’s not condescending….
Tyra seriously hates black women. Calling a dark skin black woman ‘angry’ and ‘hard to work with’ is just awful. Black women being classified as an angry black woman is such an awful stereotype that has not only ruined careers for black women (think like Aunt Viv from fresh Prince) but also makes it so black women have to overly soften themselves or code switch just to be treated normally. Disgusting.
Aunt Viv is exactly who I thought of when she said that. She spoke to Will a couple of years ago about how him saying she, a dark skinned black woman is "difficult to work with" basically ruined her career. It was the kiss of death. If she was lighter skinned or white, it would not have had as much impact as it did, especially for the time period.
I love how Tyra's allowed to have a hairstyle that makes her look like a mixture of crazy scientist and alien, but when one of the models has a better version of that same hairstyle, or a little bit of lipstick, they get roasted.
I grew up in DC (so vaguely south-ish) and SAME. Vividly remember one of the women in the office at my high school who straight up wouldn’t acknowledge anything you said until you greeted her with “good morning, ma’am.”
I was gonna say the same thing. I'm from GA and "yes ma'am/sir" "no ma'am/sir" is just a thing that we say as a sign of respect. It's funny because there's a girl in my class who mentioned how when she went back up North to visit family, they were so confused when she said this 💀
It’s quite different up north in New England. I grew up around the Boston area. Many women up here don’t like ma’am because it’s considered an “old lady” thing. We use “Miss”, “Ms”, or “Mrs” instead of “ma’am”.
@@kelseykrehbiel8500 My mother grew up in DC, but hated when I called her ma'am. I honestly just do it when I don't know your name (even if you're younger) or when it's quicker than your name.
Every single season, they try to do the whole narrative of the angry black woman. It’s so frustrating and tiring. Tyra just doesn’t want any competition TBH
@@Naturefan354 yep, I heard that too! They edited out so many things that nutcase tyra said in that rant. She even said go back to sleeping on the mattress at your grandmas with your son and even meaner things. Tyra was/is a bully that couldn’t get over any black woman doing better than her. That’s why till this day she still hates Naomi and Naomi still doesn’t care 😁
As a Chicagoan myself, Adrienne’s way of saying passion sounds literally how I’ve heard it my entire life, I don’t understand how to break something that’s been ingrained in you since your were little, and in the same breath, it’s the same thing for Robyn, she’s been raised on Southern etiquette, so saying yes ma’am no ma’am, yes sir no sir, is just her way of being polite, and in no means is condescending, these people are so critical over everything I swear 🙄🙄🙄
Janice knows absolutely that it's a sign of respect. It's well known that in America, especially the South, they do that. I'm not even from America but I've known it since I was a kid. Janice has... *many* years of experience all around the world. She *knows*. She just likes to play with her food before ea- She just likes to play with her food.
Fun Fact: WAYYY back in the day, Fresh Look was the only brand that had color contact lenses for my prescription and astigmatism, so those were the only ones I could get for cosplay.🤣
The thing that bothers me is that, almost every judge that worked ANTM, came out against the show. (Janice and the Jay. Why were they trying to cast Ebony as an angry person she so was sweet, during the commercial and at judging they asked her if she stole the contacts. **Janice and the Jays came out against the show, I didn’t say that the models came out against the judge’s.🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
For real. Also, I don’t have contacts but I assume that they’re like anything else that goes near your eyes and only one person should use them. Like mascara or eye drops should only be used by one person to avoid contamination and infection. I would guess that if you gave someone contacts to use they keep them or have to be thrown out because who would be able to use them again otherwise?
I don’t remember anyone really coming for Janice and ms jay. Actually a lot of the criticism was for Just Jay Manuel. From a lot of interviews I’ve seen Janice helped a lot of them, same with ms Jay.
Because they knew where it was going when the internet became more real. They weren’t against it for the many many years they were getting away with it
Oh, Ebony. She was mistreated and robbed. I watched her interview with Oliver TwiXt. Despite this, Ebony is still thriving. She's one of the few models on the show with a current successful modeling career. I'm so happy to hear it. 👑🍫Go, Ebony, the icon.👑🍫
If I remember, she was always very serious about the challenges and always gave full effort. That seems like it would be what you want to work with 🤷♀️
I'm in my 20's and work as an administrator on and off--I've been called ma'am since I was 18 years old. If Janice saw "yes ma'am" as someone commenting on her age, she's clearly never had to work in service or anything lol
Heaven forbid there are people in this world that are taught to have manners and be respectful. Unfortunately Janice is not one of them. There are far worse things in life than for a woman to be called ma'am. Honestly I been called worse and I quite prefer ma'am. LOL.
I feel like a lot of black kids, me included, were taught to say yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir, in general because of past racism. Especially in the south. Tyra most definitely should know that as much as she talks about the racism she’s faced. Tyra and Janice have and probably will always give me a migraine.
Janice always talks about how successful her modeling career was. If that's the case, she's probably been around people with different backgrounds and cultural norms. Hell, I've lived in New England for my entire life and even though New Englanders don't seem to like the word "ma'am" based off of my observations, even I know that in the south, using the word "ma'am" is just common manners.
Honestly I have never felt more seen than when you said contacts are not colour for your eyes, they are your eyes. I am so short sighted that I can’t exist without them (or my glasses). They are my eyes and people don’t always understand that.
I think the "just walked out" of Ebony was ok after her elimination, I can understand that the reason for her was very unexpected. Actually you can see at 21:44 Giselle after having received her picture passing by without looking Ebony's face. Is a little bit sad, in that very moment, I would hugged her.
NO! The girls moved to the side and Ebony just kinda felt like she just had to walk straight. Giselle revealed that Ebony gave them all gifts and letters after her elimination. When they saw each other again, they were both happy to meet again.
Plus they were all hugging Giselle first even though she was the one that got to stay??? I’m certainly not waiting around to say goodbye, especially when the reason for my elimination is bs at best 😒😒
I felt Ebony heart break. It's always interesting watching you react to these episodes i love how you always point out how the judges attempt to dehumanize the models and make comments as if they know who these girls are based on a photoshoot. The girl saying yes maam is a sign of respect. I don't get why Janice felt like it was condescending. I think she only said that because i think Robin was one of the older models on the show. And Ebony was not angry or difficult from what we saw. She was simply trying.
I agree completely with you, Ebony is such a sweetheart, it was very sad to see her leaving the show so early, I imagine it was a shock for her. She took feedback of the judges very serious.
Robin had replied to Janice regarding previous feedback with “Yes Ma’am” Then Janice said to Robin: ”Kind of loosen up and not be so pageantry” I guess the next “Yes Ma’am” of Robin was a trigger moment. But it’s only an observation. To be honest, anyone should be allowed to say “yes ma’am” or “yes sir” it is a polite manner.
Elyse was fantastic on this season, beautiful but so witty and entertaining to watch. You can see her lack of desperation that in turn made her more relaxed.
As someone who's been wearing glasses/contacts/hard contacts since second grade. It blew my mind when you said "why do I have to pay to see when there's people doing it for free?" Goddamn. Now I'm pissed lol.
The judges saying Robyn is being condescending (when she was being respectful!), then immediately act condescending towards her about being a pageant participant. Like, do you guys know what that word means?
I've had elder people literally tell me "don't call me sir or ma'am", it makes me sound old." I was just speechless. My parents taught me to say yes sir, no sir, yes ma'am, no ma'am. If I didn't, I would get in trouble. Janice is wrong for saying that to Robin.
If someone is nice about correcting you cause they don't want to feel old, call them Miss. They laugh at that. If they are rude about it, call them old lady. They get pissed and leave you alone. That's what I do. Works every time.
I always love your dry humor Jessica!!! It makes my day! ❤️😆 Do you have insurance? Lol I mean if you have just clear contacts, this commercial isn't for you. 😆
I'm so pleasantly surprised by Kimora as a judge. Because of Kimora's reality show, I had expected her to act more like Janice, but she was actually one of the more respectful judges. Wonder why she was only on Season 1 and Janice got to stay through Season 4...
I had to take my contacts out to write this comment 🤣😅 Growing up in the south, in elementary school we had teachers ask students to say "sir and ma'am". Cultural we are used to it and know that you mean it respectful and acknowledgement of their thoughts and input. I have had people not from Southern states and they immediately think it's insulting. I don't know why "older people" get offended. I'm not 30 and I appreciate a genuine "ma'am" 🤣😅❤️ Absolutely love your channel! Have you seen "Exposure"? it's..... interesting to compare your notes and information to the photographer judges.
This reminds me of an episode of American Idol when a person didn't make it through and when he was leaving he said "Ya'll be safe." They took it as a threat....in Kentucky that is our goodbye
I’m 99.9999% sure a model got read the riot act for just saying “okay” in response to the critiques she got in another season/cycle. So yeah. The advice changes depending on the season. The judges are a pack of F*cking weirdos.
I used to wear Freshlook Colorblends Toric until they discontinued them. Then, I switched to Acuvue Oasys 1-Day for Astigmatism as I only need them for special occasions instead of my glasses. It REALLY sucks when you HAVE to buy a box for each eye because they're different powers.
That's why I had to stop wearing them. I have -2 difference so needed two boxes with the correct strength for each eye. Couldn't afford it anymore. My glasses are busted and fall off constantly. I'm broke since awhile lol
Omg my people. I have astigmatism but let me try to get cute and colorful lenses... I would need to take out a loan and use my whole allowance for the year lol.
Giselle came off as someone with strong confidence and Ebony came off as calm queen. All that really means is they weren’t as good at backing their false narratives with manipulation and editing in season one. Not yet…
I love Jessica's reaction about the club comment.. like "you see an ugly girl in the club who guys want.. why is that???" LOL and Jessica's face just healing all the trauma of competition and comparison, from my youth. Thank you queen!
I personally think that Giselle is very self-critical, I don't think that she has a lack of self-confidence. How she expressed 'passion' didn't show me that she was affraid or nervous to do the commercial.
@@zurichwavelegit. The episode before this, she got told to improve the 'texture' of her skin, so she was lathering her skin in moisturizing oil. To the point some of the girls were saying she was leaving grease all over the loft 🤣🤣🤣 And J even told her she was ready to be fried!!!
How could anyone have a problem with being called ma'am? That term is meant to be respectful, that's why polite people often say it. It's better than being called any nasty names. I understand that someone who's not that old may be offended by that, I just don't understand why because it's still a respectful tone. People act like aging is offensive and wrong when it literally happens to all of us as human beings. It's ridiculous.
I agree, I was working at a hair salon as as a receptionist and picked up the phone. I called the woman on the other end Ma’am nicely, but she throw a fit that I called her that to the point I was in tears. I did it out of respect. If I ever encounter her again in calling her a word that rhymes with bunt
@@elysiabarr425 I'm so sorry for you that you were in tears for just being respectful. Especially if there is a rank, customer/client - vendor, candidate - judge, I think it is very appropriate to use 'Ma'am'.
man i had a roommate blow up on me once because she thought the way i said hi was fake (i would just do a small wave) but i was just awkward while trying to be friendly. we come from completely different backgrounds so i guess thats not natural to her but like damn i didnt know doing stuff like that was so offensive to some ppl 😭
I love these videos SOoo much Jessica!!🥰🖤 I love how it's out on a Saturday.. when I was like 12-15 every Saturday ANTM would play a whole season in one day on Saturdays and almost EVERY Saturday I sat and watched the whole thing! Gives me super young middle school-early highschool nostalgia 🥺🥰 Edited to add: I do remember thinking about of this stuff was odd or off-putting at the time.. even little 12-15 year old me was picking up on the problematic nature of this show!
Ebony was literaly the sweetest of the bunch. I loved Adrienne and I'm glad she won but Ebony was so sweet and her smile is incredible. I feel like this was one the most unfair elimination of ANTM. Tyra just don't like dark-skinned lack women.
I'm really sorry about your eyes. :( when I had to go just a few days without my glasses, having really bad vision, it was so awful! Not only because of the migraines that ensued, but because I couldn't go anywhere or do anything without help. Going to Chipotle (damn their disgusting burritos) was so embarrassing because they didn't have a menu that I could look at closely. Even if I could read Braille, nobody seemed to have anything in it available (I asked out of curiosity because I started to wonder how blind people get at by). I don't know where you're from but in America, accessibility for the blind is so extremely limited, it's shocking and disgraceful! I really wish I could do or say something to help. :(
I wake up 15 min. earlier for all the choreographies I do whenever I pop my contacts in. And again, why do they have to be so rude to the models? LOVED that judge for the final comeback. True King!
My mother doesn’t like it when people call her “ma’am”. Some people consider it an old lady title. Plain anc simple. My mom always instructed me to use “Miss”, “Ms”, or “Mrs”.
I can understand the commercial aspect of this show. A lot of models do commercials as well. I don't know if they read lines, but I get it. That's why when they did commercials, it wasn't a surprise to me. Since this is the first season, I think they just edited out the individual takes for judging to shorten time.
Yeah but they usually know like a couple of weeks or even months that they have a job booked. They would very rarely have only 5 takes and 5 minutes to learn the lines. And if for any reason a photographer or the people casting the ad have to last minute book an actress or model, they understand that it’s last minute and the actress needs more takes or a little time to be able to read lines or know where to walk etc.
I actually love Elyse in season 1. She was direct and not afraid to speak her mind or disagree with people for the sake of being liked. I think more young women should feel comfortable being so straightforward. I also love sarcastic people so I’m bias lol
18:38 'Anything else?' WOW; I think she was only twenty years old, I wish I was that confident. She knew her lines of the script very well, to be honest, she mastered all tasks of this season eloquently.
elyse didn't really fall for any of the manipulation of the show and they tried so hard. which was a problem for the show but the modeling company that they won a contract with at the end wanted Elyse not Adrianne. A mess
I even refer to my dog and kittens as ma'am bc it's the culture of our area to add ma'am, sir, etc. Even the toddlers and preschoolers I teach are referenced with ma'am or sir; especially when they are acting a fool or being corrected. I get finding other people's niceties as rude, but to tear her down knowing the culture she comes from as a total hostile response.
I say "no ma'am" to my 2 year old when she gets in trouble, so now if she sees someone doing something they shouldn't she gets onto them and says "no ma'am!" And she will get onto herself when she does something she will get in trouble for lmao. Its pretty funny when we are at the grocery store and she starts trying to pull stuff off the shelf because I will say it and all the ladies in the aisles around me will stop grabbing their items and turn to look at me then laugh when they see her.
Literally every commercial they give the models an inadequate amount of time to prepare which means they are, yet again, another moment where they're trying to embarrass the girls.
There is a direct comparison for evaluating a performance. In my opinion, sometimes the approach to do a hard task can be more interesting than the final result.
watching this over again as a 40 year old woman I am amazed at how I liked this nonsense. When in that shoot was Ebony this angry woman they say she was? So often we see these paper thin excuses to eliminate someone and I just have to be grateful I can see through it now
Ebony was older and had 'skin' issues..the director said he had to work longer with her..they were looking for an excuse, not valid, but any. Watch Robin being pageant has a target like all pageant girls and Giselle..you are a dancer, so can't be a model..just ridiculous how T treats and talks to these women.
I opened my RUclips app. As I waited for it to load, I thought "algorithm, so you know what I want to watch?" This video pops at the top. Answer: it knew what I wanted.
I met a guy through Instagram once whose job was to write jingles for commercials & he made good money for it. He literally sent me one and asked for my feedback lol. I was like how do you get that kind of job?! I'm sure it's harder than it seems.
They have a stereotype about the bald head and someone being angry. Even though it was their makeover. She was anything but angry. Although now I am angry. 😂
I agree, she gave me the impression that after a critic from the judges, she was prompt ready to improve. I would say, she took the program very seriously.
It was crazy to me that Janice's often had positive things to say about the plus-sized models' performance, but was so negative about the inclusion of plus-sized models.
@@MuzzyBarker I think that in many occasions, the candidates were not present while she gave her personal opinion about who she saw as her potential next topmodel.
I absolutely love your commentary and agree with pretty much everything you say regarding the incredibly malicious judging. I do want to say that Robin this season was a horribly homophobic and judgmental person therefor my sympathy for her getting called out for saying “ma’am” is very low. I know many women really do not like the term ma’am. My mom loses it every time someone says it to her because it feels ageist.
The thing with the "yes ma'am" was the model was brought up to be respectful and thats a way to address someone older than yourself in a respectful manner. But in Janice's mind she was thinking how dare this little snot nosed teen state how much of an old hag I am. Thats all it was.
You should react to an episode of Janice's modeling agency show... Its horrible! You would do a great job at explaining WHY she was a horrible modeling agent and how wrongly she treated her models. Seriously, I have watched a youtuber named Luxeria react to a few episodes, and it's bonkers and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t like being called “Ma’am” either but what the heck was Janice talking about 😂 I wouldn’t had said anything it’s not that serious. This was so hilarious to watch btw you’re so funny !
the plus size judge defended a model once, I think. wasn't everyone on the panel body shaming someone and she was like "don't listen to these bullies, you're perfect"
Tyra stigmatising and using the sterotype of "angry black woman" is insane. She really hates dark-skinned black woman and it shows so much through this TV SHOW. She doesn't know how much damage she done with ANTM. She gives innocent young woman bad ideas about the modelling world. Also, Janice is a weirdo for thinking politeness is "condescending" what's her deal?
Leave it to Janice to take a sign of respect as disrespectful. She thinks she is still young and gets sensitive when reminded of her age and experience.
fr like everyone knows she’s the oldest one there and she hates that😭
Totally! 💯

This was so unfair. The girl was the opposite. This really made me mad.

Also, the time when Robyn was doing praying together, Ebony was looking the camera and rolling her eyes like she said "Are you kidding me?"
And later, after the praying was over she said to other girls: "This is not uh... sorority. This is not a bible program. This is modelling competition."
Ebony cleared up that Robin and Shannon met up with Ka and talked to her :) You're welcome

Like she was trying to insinuate that only dark skinned women do that, when I think is a job anyone can do.
The whole "we're eliminating you because you seem angry" just kinda feels a bit leaning into a stereotype.
Ebony was such a great person in the house. She asked everybody first if she could have a visit and she took the feedbacks from the judges very serious.
Exactly! And coming from a black woman at that. Tyra should be ashamed.
Being painted as the angry black woman when you’ve been the complete opposite is so insulting
@@whitneylovesweets You have not been the complete opposite.
I love Robin politeness, it shows strength.
This. I will literally call people younger than me sir/ma’am just as a genuine sign of politeness/respect.
It def seemed condescending how Janice and Tyra reacted to it 🙄🙄🙄
@@chelseahawk8396 Yeah, me too.
Not born here, but grew up here since I was 9, and literally call everyone sir/ma'am now since that's what I was taught to do after moving here
Tyra seriously hates black women. Disgusting.
No just the dark ones
Aunt Viv is exactly who I thought of when she said that. She spoke to Will a couple of years ago about how him saying she, a dark skinned black woman is "difficult to work with" basically ruined her career. It was the kiss of death. If she was lighter skinned or white, it would not have had as much impact as it did, especially for the time period.
Most are angry though…so some stereotypes reign true
Maybe stop being angry then?
I love how Tyra's allowed to have a hairstyle that makes her look like a mixture of crazy scientist and alien, but when one of the models has a better version of that same hairstyle, or a little bit of lipstick, they get roasted.
Her hairline went 📈📈📈📈

I was raised in the south and we were taught to address people by saying “yes ma’am/sir”. It was rude to NOT say it.
I was going to bring this up too because I think Robyn is from the south. It's probably not as much a pageant thing as much as a southern thing
Fast forward to season 5 when Nicole says "ok" during her evaluation and they rip into her because saying "ok" is condescending and rude. 🙄

Hahaha yeah they were the ig and never worked in dark brown eyes. I’m so happy there are others now 😂
The thing that bothers me is that, almost every judge that worked ANTM, came out against the show.
I would guess that if you gave someone contacts to use they keep them or have to be thrown out because who would be able to use them again otherwise?
@@anna-lisalysell5077 I completely agree, this was just sad to watch, Ebony did nothing wrong.

That reason for Ebony made no sense whatsoever. It pushed an even further stereotype on black women. 🙄 The "angry black woman" again.
Was looking for this comment. Tyra = 🤮🤮🤮🤮
I'm in my 20's and work as an administrator on and off--I've been called ma'am since I was 18 years old. If Janice saw "yes ma'am" as someone commenting on her age, she's clearly never had to work in service or anything lol
Elise is my spirit animal. The episode where she goes off about all the girls in the confessional is GOLD.
Elyse did always deliver very eloquate there is nothing to critsize.
She became a pretty successful model in Asia for a while.
@@Hiker2110 yes, exactly 👏🏾
Everyone in the south is taught to say sir/ma'am, regardless of race
If Giselle did give them EVERYTHING, it would've been too much for them. Let's keep it real.
One of the next episodes, she gets criticized for being “too much of a dancer”
@@js.3157 I am asking myself if she didn't say anything about it, if she made it to the top 5.
Yep.
Please. Janice is queen of condescension and nastiness. Only ANTM would vilify being kind and respectful and this was all of season 1 with the antics…
Ebony’s elimination criticism was one the most confusing and inaccurate they ever had.
She was so shocked, too. It reads all over her face. So messed up. She was beautiful and seemed to be a really happy and lovely person to be around
Elyse was fantastic on this season, beautiful but so witty and entertaining to watch. You can see her lack of desperation that in turn made her more relaxed.
Absolutely, I think that worked for her since her performance was always top.
Elyse was and will always be iconic hahaha!
Janice is just mad that a girl in her 20s calls her ma’am because she’s older 😂
I've had elder people literally tell me "don't call me sir or ma'am", it makes me sound old." I was just speechless. My parents taught me to say yes sir, no sir, yes ma'am, no ma'am. If I didn't, I would get in trouble. Janice is wrong for saying that to Robin.
If someone is nice about correcting you cause they don't want to feel old, call them Miss. They laugh at that. If they are rude about it, call them old lady. They get pissed and leave you alone. That's what I do. Works every time.
Elyse's "Anything else?" will forever be iconic to me
Robin is freaking beautiful! She was a model and on magazines before the show so that's why she understood these assignments.
I was not expecting Ebony to be taken out. I loved her energy. She looked flawless.
So being polite means a reaction like that is warranted.. just because Janice took it bad?!?!
Tyra always says the most backhanded things about the girls.
I always love your dry humor Jessica!!! It makes my day! ❤️😆 Do you have insurance? Lol I mean if you have just clear contacts, this commercial isn't for you. 😆
It's so good and refreshing. I burst out laughing. I love how she loves video games too.
lol gotta love when one of the most condescending judges on the panel gets offended from being called "ma'am"
OMG that was the director of the commercial who said that the model could call him "Ma'am" any time! OMG i LOVED that so much.
I'm so pleasantly surprised by Kimora as a judge. Because of Kimora's reality show, I had expected her to act more like Janice, but she was actually one of the more respectful judges. Wonder why she was only on Season 1 and Janice got to stay through Season 4...
I had to take my contacts out to write this comment 🤣😅
Growing up in the south, in elementary school we had teachers ask students to say "sir and ma'am". Cultural we are used to it and know that you mean it respectful and acknowledgement of their thoughts and input.
I have had people not from Southern states and they immediately think it's insulting.
I don't know why "older people" get offended. I'm not 30 and I appreciate a genuine "ma'am" 🤣😅❤️

But Robin is from the south, and when talking to your superiors or anyone in charge you say ma’am or sir
And that gave ratings. I wish more girls were like that on the show.

I do want to say that Robin this season was a horribly homophobic and judgmental person therefor my sympathy for her getting called out for saying “ma’am” is very low. I know many women really do not like the term ma’am. My mom loses it every time someone says it to her because it feels ageist.
"She's credited many times in this performance." 😂 There came a point in this series where 70% of it for me was how crazy Tyra was.
The thing with the "yes ma'am" was the model was brought up to be respectful and thats a way to address someone older than yourself in a respectful manner. But in Janice's mind she was thinking how dare this little snot nosed teen state how much of an old hag I am. Thats all it was.
Janice is a old hag, she calls even skinny girls fat. Janice needs to learn respect is earned, not given
Lmao “I didn’t know they were also doing BROADWAY!”
I’m here for the nostalgia and Jessica’s hilarious comments. 😂😂😂
Tyra saying "passion" wasn't even in different accents, just a different volume. 🤣
Elise is the embodiment of "I'm not like other girls"
I don’t like being called “Ma’am” either but what the heck was Janice talking about 😂 I wouldn’t had said anything it’s not that serious. This was so hilarious to watch btw you’re so funny !
Tyra just loved making the black models into the angry black girl trope. That’s something I feel like was very prevalent on this show.
the plus size judge defended a model once, I think. wasn't everyone on the panel body shaming someone and she was like "don't listen to these bullies, you're perfect"
Jeana?
For those who thought this was TLDW:
Every frame with Janice is problematic ;)
Tyra stigmatising and using the sterotype of "angry black woman" is insane. She really hates dark-skinned black woman and it shows so much through this TV SHOW. She doesn't know how much damage she done with ANTM. She gives innocent young woman bad ideas about the modelling world.
Also, Janice is a weirdo for thinking politeness is "condescending" what's her deal?
I like how the shocking moment for the show is when someone is nice to the models. Goes to show you something.
The anti blackness and racist dog whistles are on fleek in this episode
Elyse is super cute! And Ebony is an absolute goddess. I hope they went on to have a great career.
You’ve now got me, a Chicagoan who’s been in Texas a few years, saying Passion at 2am to try and see if I still have the accent.😂
