    She wouldn’t have cried about the haircut during the photo shoot if Mr Jay hadn’t asked her how she felt about it in the middle of the photo shoot. Still to this day she has a long fluffy weave on the most recent time I saw her. So she is happy to cut off other models hair but keeps her own long just like all the other top female models. I remember having no understanding or sympathy for why anyone would cry from a haircut, when I watched this show as a teen. Laughing at the fragility along with the judges. The narrative of these women being ridiculous, immature, vain for wanting any autonomy was really pushed hard on the show. I definitely internalized some misogyny. "I'm not like those women (cause being like that would be unacceptable)".
    Now I realize that it's not just about hair. It's about self expression, the right to chose what happens to your body, being able to recognize yourself, having your boundaries respected, the loss of control, the societal expectations, the consequences of not performing femininity, how much work can go into hair, the years of progress that disappear and having to start over.
    The really treated the women as mannequins, and aggressively called out any deviating behavior from being just that. Insane. Honestly, after having seen breakdown after breakdown, I'm at a point where I would be surprised if no one came out from ANTM with genuine trauma

      'They really treated the women as mannequins" that is the point. Models are moving mannequins for advertising. It is their job to sell a product with their body as an alternative to a hanger, hair included. If their customer wants xyz, they do xyz or the job goes to someone else.

    • @AtMyBorders
      @AtMyBorders 2 года назад +55

      @@SharonVeeLee Models can (and should) refuse contracts that includes clauses they don't agree with. It can be about wages, the use of their image/photos in certain circumstances, the work conditions and of course their personal boundaries. This is how those debuting models will accept anything, including things they are not comfortable with, because "that's the job" and because they fear that they won't get employed when in fact they are just ridding the slippery slope to exploitation.
      Just like a model can specify they won't work in the nude, that their image can't be used for "adult funtime" publications, they can also say they don't want something as simple as getting their hair cut.
      Either the employer will accept those conditions or they won't but these women are entilted their body autonomy. They are not objects that will be shelved out at the end of the photoshoot but people who will go home and live their life.

    • @SharonVeeLee
      @SharonVeeLee 2 года назад

      @@AtMyBorders but if they accept the contract of work they are legally bound to work according to it or be let go. Yes models should say no to what they disagree with but you can't sign off that you will do something, not do it, and then get mad when you get booted. It absolutely needs to be addressed that there are agencies that take advantage of new models but there needs to be education and responsibility on the model's part too.
      With ANTM they agreed to be on the show, they knew what was expected of them when they were accepted. It's like being hired at Hooters and then being mad that you have ro wear the booty shorts.

    It makes sense that she’s crying about her hair. I always 🤦‍♀️ when people say “hair grows back”. Yeah by the time I’m 40! Hair doesn’t grow back in a day. And even if you discount the impact on a person’s identity and mental health of forcing such a haircut, the amount of time it takes to grow back hair to a significant length can make up a large proportion of a model’s career. I have worked with an agency before in London. Yes, it’s true that you “don’t look how you want to look” but that is limited to short term changes- eg you may have a makeup look that you don’t like, but you can wash that off! When it comes to significant changes, and this even includes less Long term stuff like hair colouring, they always discuss in depth with the model to determine if that change will be good for their career as a whole for the next few years. And if the model herself is too uncomfortable with it usually such requests (clients wanting to cut a models hair short for instance) are declined. Also it is very unlikely that a client will ask an agency if they can give a model a pixie cut. Agencies have models that already have short hair and it’s much easier for both the client, the model and the agency to just choose a model who already has the look you want. Usually these requests come with very famous models - they want a famous face but with a different hairstyle. But in those cases most of the time they will use wigs and prosthetics. Nowadays these props are so well made that there is no need to shave a model’s head or cut her hair. It seems like they don’t care about how the industry actually works and rather care about making shocking scenes for television.

      also, not everyone's hair grows at the same rate! I can have a pixie cut one year and the next year it will be down to my shoulders. I regularly do this just because I feel like it. My friend can work hard and grow her hair, take supplements and products and it would be 2 years before she gains 2 inches of length. Her hair just doesn't grow fast. For people saying that hair grows back, they must have hair like mine that grows like a weed. not everyone is in the same boat. Plus, I choose when, where, and how my hair is cut, no one else is choosing for me. That makes a huge difference!

She's acting like people are going to insist you have to look a certain way, definitely at your agent may suggest certain changes to make you a little more marketable, but those are just suggestions. When they cast for a shoot, if they're looking for a blonde, they're just not going to book you if you're not blonde. No one's going to force you to cut or dye your hair it's just so ridiculous.

    As someone who's worked in theatre lighting, I would never expect an actor to know how to light themselves. To understand where their light is once everything is set, yes, but to actually light themselves? I get that this is a challenge, but it's near impossible to light yourself while still being present in the shot/scene etc. You need that front on perspective from a photographer/designer/director etc, to be able to see how well-rounded the whole shot is from an audience perspective. I can't see how they can expect balanced composition/shadow that's remotely flattering when these girls are having to hold lights so close to themselves.

    Fo didn’t just begin to cry or complain about her makeover on set - it wasn’t her who mentioned it, but Jay asking quite cutting, insensitive and personal questions as to whether it makes her feel less feminine. In a highly pressurised situation, in front of others when she may already feel insecure, to ask about her new look in such a way is bound to make her uncomfortable and upset. For Nigel to bring it up to Tyra like he did, and for Tyra to respond in that manner, is totally unfair and unjustified - Fo didn’t deserve that at all. Just another excuse to create drama for the show, and add more stress for the models.
    Used to watch this back in the day, but never realised how borderline abusive some of the comments and behaviours were - and that’s the JUDGES and so called “professionals” behaving that way. Disgusting that they could get away with this tbh.

    Tyra's makeovers were mostly based on what she thought was better for the models. Not what would've really take them "to the next level".
    She got some make overs right. But a lot of them were basically Tyra wanting the girls to like like some editorial or high fashion show she might have just watched, or in some cases just wanting to break girls' confidence.
    Like you said, if models were doing a haute couture runway and the designer would want everyone with a pixie cut, pink hair or no brows; they wouldn't exactly chop their hair off, dye their hair pink, or shave their brows. They'd use wigs, and if they'd want some androgynous look they'd bleach the brows and then back to normal. And they do this because they know models will do a bunch of different shows for different designers that would want them to look in different ways.
    That's why most models go with a simple hair cut, not too long and not too short, and they'll always try to keep their natural hair color as much as possible. Of course there are exceptions, and some models have achieved great levels of success with really short hair or no hair at all (Alek Wek, Silk Woods, Adut, etc). But even they are constantly changing.
    The worst examples of Tyra using girls' head for her experiments were Molly when she tried to give her Diana Ross's hair, despite Molly's scalp not being able to handle that much of hair. Or giving girls with black hair, blond hair, that although didn't look bad, but just took a lot of work, and could've been easily achieved with a wig (which Tyra knows since she uses blond wigs all the time)

    Jessica, what I love most about your videos is that it’s also an education for any would be models to empower them and show them what they should not put up with. Love your how tos and tutorials too, could watch you content all day!

      People grew up loving/being impacted by her shows and are looking back in time to compare what they perceived then, to what we now currently can perceive, when it comes to boundaries, fair collaboration and how social norms and power dynamics have changed for the best since then. Autonomy and fairness, less of a top down hierarchy, are more accepted and prioritized these days

    ANTM contains so many damaging and problematic messages, not only affecting contestants but potentially everyone who watches these shows. I'm sure easily influenced people (like kids) will get the wrong idea with toxic acts being portrayed as "deserved" and "just" when in reality they could never be justified. I'm glad someone calls the damaging and harmful behaviour from the show towards its contestants out!
    I get that drama and big emotions sell, but at whose cost? Shows like this should think about the values they convey to their audience.
    Though I don't think the judges alone are to blame, there's a script and ppl behind the scenes who let it happen and encourage said behaviour. Don't hate (-just-) the player, hate the game.

    Thank you so much for your channel. It is so eye opening. A lot of people did not realize how harmful this show was to these beautiful young ladies. They tried to break their spirits. These are humiliation rituals. Tyra and those judges have no shame and are abusive. They say that this is just the modeling industry. Tyra could have created a show to change the industry and make it better. All she did was bring the same racism, sexism, homophobia, sexual harassment and abuse and physical abuse to her show. I watched the season with Eva the diva and stopped because of how bad she treated those precious ladies. She might of cut the hair and sold it. You never know. She cut a lot of hair of these women. Tyra and her whole crew will get their karma for mistreating these young ladies.

    I am so relieved you did these commentary videos on ANTM and you're standing up for these girls. Yes, they are totally getting bullied and the judges are completely irrational & mean. Every comment you make is sooo on-point! I really hope the judges see your videos, they need to be told about themselves, as well as the models, so they can feel better about themselves and know that the public think their treatment was disgraceful.

    The judges send the wrong message when it comes to modeling. They make it seem like EVERYTHING is the model's fault! Even the photo that gets chosen! They basically say 'This is the shot that was chosen. It's not good and that's your fault!'
    I am very shocked that I was so obsessed with this show!

    As a professional and educator at photography, I totally agree with you. Photographer has huge responsibility to give directive and make images work good. I think by experience that the photographers at the show doesnt want to be blamed for a bad photo. Better give blame to the models who lack experience and knowledge how it works.

    In an Oliver Twixt interview I heard fr9m Laura that, on All stars cycle 17, Bianca was eliminated for complaining that they weren’t feeding the girls or something. I can’t remember exactly what it was but something simple like they needed to be fed I believe. Apparently she stood up for all the girls multiple times and they eliminated her because of it.

    As a model, they would never cut your hair for a photo shoot. Sometimes, you'll have another shoot later that day or the next day and it would be detrimental for you to show up with drastically different hair. Especially, because that might've been a component for them hiring you in the first place. If they want different hair, they'll put a wig on you or style it a certain way. It's part of the psychological and emotional manipulation of this show that they permanently change the girls. I don't think there's ever been a girl on this show who got the short pixie-cut and was happy about it so the people of the show know what they're doing when they assign that style.

    I am so mad at myself because I did not realize how bad this show really was. Tyra presented herself as the leader and supporter of those girls but in reality she acted like the bitter,jealous "over the hill"(by this toxic industry's standards) wannabe mentor with a "you-will-suffer-as-i-did" flag.

    I feel like Tyra picks her favorites early on and those girls will get the good makeovers. While to make the show entertaining they pick at least 3-4 girls that are going to have bad make overs. Some of the haircuts, weaves have been awful. While another girls looks amazing. They want at least one girl to cry or be upset. If they can get more girls upset it's a win for their production.

    Several of the reasons that I stopped watching ANTM. Too much done for drama and mess versus developing young talent to achieve their dream. This episode in particular I totally agree with you about the lighting. I am also a professional photographer and wouldn't imagine asking a client to control the direction of the lights and/ or placement of the lights. There is no need to cut someone's hair for a makeover if they didn't ask for it. Agencies don't ask for hair cuts. They either select a model for their campaigns or not. These are industry professionals behaving like schoolyard bullies for ratings and no real instruction to become a legitimate model.

  • @jerusha6085

    I think it’s both the job of the photographer , AND the model to work together with the lighting. Models do need to have some clue of what the lighting does to their frame/structure , - so they can pose accordingly but photographers need to be vocal and direct them.
    It’s all about working together and communication. 😄

    • @joe2snj
      @joe2snj 2 года назад +14

      I'm a photographer, its our job to find, shape, use and direct light to a model/subject. That's literally what the word photography means "drawing with light". I don't expect or need models to know anything about light as they are in the scene and can't have the view of it that I do. A model is there to pose and express themselves. agree that communication is vital but as photographers we have the artistic and technical responsibility that models don't and shouldn't be expected to have.
