That's Benny Ninja. He was the "pose instructor" for a lot of the cycles, and often took part in pose challenges with the models. I think the reason he was so simplistic in these photos was so he didn't distract from the models, because believe me... Benny Ninja can pose. 😁

I never understood the feedback that Jay always gave the models. The show always says "In the real modeling world, blah blah blah." But in the real modeling world, if a model is doing poorly, surely _someone_ on set would start giving directions and tips to help the model get the shot; a real professional crew wouldn't just say "Hey, you look awful, that pose is horrible" and leave the model to flounder and fail. The constant belittling and manufactured drama this show had are just so aggravating to see in hindsight.

I agree, if there was this much budget on an actual shoot, a real professional would be bending over backwards to get the shot, help the model, and get the job done with minimal strain or miscommunication. The drama that's funneled through this show is purely for views and the audience, which I understand so long as it isn't at the emotional expense or well-being of the contestants. I used to look at this show as a kid as a reference to the creative industry, but in reality if a set is this toxic towards the staff/models it isn't one worth working on as any kind of artist or creative.

The funny thing is, Tyra’s signature story is her first walk. The director said to be like a cat. What they meant was to have a smooth step and a fierce final pose. Tyra got to the end of the runway and made a seductive clawing motion to the camera and meowed.
Had that director been a total hardass and came down on her like she and her crew comes down on these girls, Tyra probably wouldn’t have gotten to be flung into her fame as fast as she did. Hell, she could’ve quit modeling all-together if it was traumatizing enough.
They forgive nothing because they’re already experts and have forgotten what it means to start a journey and to be inexperienced and they definitely get their jollies from putting certain girls down and/or giving them goofy makeovers

    • @angelarice8418
      @angelarice8418 2 года назад +114

True. Tyra also recounts the story about how she was told to lose weight in order to stay in high fashion. instead, she and her manager/mom decided to go a different route. However, she now tells the contestants to do whatever authority says and look however they're told to look in order to be successful. It is disingenuous

Honestly I wish I could see a modeling show that is set up like the Great British Bake-Off show, meaning one that is focused on teaching vs drama. The most drama that exists in Bake-Off is when someone can’t get a cake to cook properly or someone drops a pie… there is zero drama between the contestants because they are all supporting each other and cheering each other on. I wish I could see more “reality shows” like that. I would rather see the process of a group of models growing and learning while being in realistic photoshoots than the manufactured drama like we have in ANTM…
IMO the first season of ANTM was probably the best in that regard because it seemed like Tyra and the show genuinely wanted the models to succeed or at least to learn something along the way.

Italy for example saw a major diaspora in the 1880's and most of those immigrants had to go through Ellis Island.
It's easy to put the "American dream" spin on it in order to romanticize the immigrants at Ellis Island but in reality Ellis Island was just where the lower class and often quite poor immigrants were processed (it's not like they were treated that great either). Wealthy immigrants didn't go through there.

It always baffled me that they expect these girls to pose like professional models when this competition is supposedly for brand new aspiring models. Like the comment Tyra made in this video about coordinating with other models in the photo shoot - wouldn’t that have been helpful advice BEFORE the shoot? And I can’t count the number of times judges have commented “this pose looks amateur to me”; I think that happened on some of the first episodes! Of course the posing looks “amateur” because this is the first time modeling for many of the contestants and the show doesn’t bother to guide or teach at all, even on photoshoots with Mr Jay. In the end, the whole point of the show is for the judges to set the contestants up for failure and then gleefully watch the drama that ensues...

18:51 - that picture is BEAUTIFUL. Yet Tyra and co claim the eyes are dead - HOW DARE THEY?!? They wanted to criticize her, there was absolutely nothing wrong with that picture except the 'husband' with his elbow-out pose.

Clearly Tyra and her crew have never stepped into the little museum that they had at the island, because the REAL immigrants in those photos are in no way "posing" or having a "fashion photoshoot." The women in those pictures have real stories in their eyes and it is even more beautiful than if they were posing. The fact that Tyra was trying to beautify immigration was just plain distasteful.

Exactly! I thought it was so weird that they were telling the girls who went into the shoot with the mindset of an actress that they were being too boring! Like, why have a themed photo shoot if you want them to just pose like they always do? Of course it looks incongruous! It looked like the kids actually got what they were supposed to be doing, but the "posing director" and Jay had no clue.

From a historical perspective? The outfits? Total fiction. Some of the children look decent but the models are not anywhere close to historical reality. As a fashion history nerd, it makes me cringe but I don’t think they were going for total accuracy, which isn’t really 100% possible anyway, so it’s not a big deal.

I believe jay mentioned in his antm chat that they didn’t end up using any of the film shots, the digital camera you saw in the video are where the images came from so props to the photographer and whoever did the editing for this shoot

If the show was filmed today Cecilia's comment would've made a difference. They would've called out Tahlia and had her explain herself at the very least

I REALLY wish the other girl would’ve stood up instead of Celia. It made Celia look like an easedropper and the villian. Though Celia was set up. A scene was edited out. So sad

It’s funny because they went after the only girl who didn’t pout or do an intense look. I liked the girl who got sent home. I think her picture was portraying what she said, she looked happy and excited.

Apparently, Celia said that Tyra had asked the girls right after that elimination if they wanted to come up and say anything, like if there was anything that was going on? Of course they don't show Tyra baiting them, but Celia fell for the trap unfortunately. She talked about it in an interview years ago.

I absolutely love shooting in film. And these photos look like they were manipulated in post like they had filters laid over in portions when the negatives were being shot through the light. Like reverse development where you lay objects over the paper and blink the light on to develop the shadows of the objects onto the paper. So cool

I remember watching this years ago not knowing why celia was "wrong" If i was in a competition fighting tooth and nail for a huge LIFE CHANGING opportunity, and some one complained about not wanting to fight and put in the work, I would speak up too. If anything, I think Tyra is wrong for telling Celia off like that. Why would you want to keep a contestant who doesn't want to be there? Oh and if Tyra did tell the contestants to tell her "whats wrong" and she reacted like that? Two faced.

I loved Celia this cycle but this scene clearly made her faith, if even we all know Tyra wants to her out after this so weird how the other hand Brittany won after a pretty similar scene.. Weird things happened in this show imo.

I heard that Brittany won cause Vogue was the sponsor and they want that, but that's just a theory that people have and i believe it, cause let be honest... Any other girl would be eliminated if they do what Brittany did.

Celia was set up! I though Celia was the villian TOO until I found out the truth! Do research. Besides what Celia did still had nothing to do with modeling even if it was a mistake. You’re supposed to be judged on your modeling mistakes..not other mistakes
