Gonna be honest: If a photographer shoots over 10 women and claims they all suck and he was uninspired that seems like a photographer problem and not a model problem.
10 women that passed an exhausting long casting. So yeah, photographers' problem
As far as I know they were all novice models (except for Amanda). The photographer being uninspired? I don’t really see the point of including that statement because there are so many things that could make him feel uninspired that have nothing to do with the models.
Jessica I forever love and appreciate when you go on a rant defending people with “bad skin”. Literally NO ONE would ever choose to have acne. Everyone who has acne would flip a switch to get rid of it if it was that easy. Thank you for always talking about that struggle whenever it comes up on antm 💕
Agreed Julia. For those struggling with acne in their youth as I did (and often still do ). I'm now in my 40s and constantly get asked for ID even though I barely even apply moisturiser daily, let alone follow a consistent skincare routine (I usually manage for a few weeks at a time before I get sick of it)! My friends that had enviable, flawless skin when I was young are now struggling with aging and wrinkles. I know it feels like forever away when your young but you'll appreciate it when your older, hang in there!
RIGHT?! Like as if people with acne are rubbing their faces with pizza grease instead of trying every single product on the market, going to a dermatologist, or they might even have a medical condition that makes their acne worse. Not only that, but models constantly have their faces caked with makeup so sometimes, their skin is going to react differently depending on the person. I feel so bad for other people who understand the struggle, but hey, at least none of us are alone!
Oh if I could get rid of acne that easily!! Just work on that they say. I'm 43 and have lost count of the products and regimes I've tried.
I'm 24 and still have acne. I try everything, and let me tell you, that's kinda expensive. I don't really receive bad comment from people, but since a clean face is what our society want, I feel so bad looking at my face. I put makeup on just to feel confident. Sometimes, when I get confident and happy without makeup, if I see myself in a miror, i feel ashamed like I don't have the right to feel that way. I know I should not feel that way, but it's so hard

They really pick on Yaya and her skin a lot, interestingly I think she's probably one of the more successful people from this season. She went from modeling to acting.
They tried so hard to dim her shine. They could tell she was confident
And also her being educated .tried to portray her as arrogant
Right and although I love Eva, I feel like Yaya should have won ❤️

She looked at it like “if we are going to see each other in the real world as models, there’s no point in saying bye”. Also she wanted to hold it together until she left the room. She cried after she left.
If I remember correctly Cassie had an eating disorder, and they just told her she looked two months pregnant. Yeah I'm sure she didn't go back to the house and throw up after this judging
Yeah. It addressed in a later episode. She actually wanted to lose more weight and one of the go-see designers had the nerve to say her hips were too big.
Also, as someone who is currently 4 months pregnant, you usually aren't showing at 2 months pregnant. So... what does that even mean?
Yeah they told her she looks like shes pregnant then says dont try to lose weight??
And in the same episode in one photoshoot, Cassie and Toccara (The plus size model) got bullied by the people behind the screen. Cassie for having biggest hips and Toccara for having plus size body and they both don't have clothes that fits on their body and later, both of them are in bottom 2 as well. The judges are also bullying both of them on deliberation especially Janice and Tyra (for once having a sense) is the only one who defended Toccara and called it as discrimination.
Pregnancy of 2 months is literally undetectable. Such a stupid comment :X.

The amount of times I've heard Tyra advise these women to stick out their butts or chests more to be "pow," only to hear them call it hoochie or pinup like it's a bad thing. Make it make sense.
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt depending on the photoshoot. When it was actually a "men's magazine" type of shoot, it made sense.
I like how Jay gives vague feedback then proceed to get mad when the models don't understand " be more animalistic" is vague ", there's billons of animals they don't look all the same. "Open your arms more and be slightly bent" is precise
Lol you're right. "There's billions of animals" made me laugh so hard. Does he mean like a tiger? Muskrat? Bearded dragon? Could he please put on some stilettos, get out there on the rocks, and demonstrate?

YES!!!!! Some of the shoots are kind of obvious eg black/brown/yellow face (ETA sorry I know “yellow” is not ok to say… but that’s the theatre term. The king of Siam was played by a white guy back in the day, but they used makeup to make him look more Asian 🤢🤬)
Sorry I digress. Some other shoots have them so made-up you can’t even tell what they look like……………..

I always thought Magdalena’s elimination was so unfair 😞 and the way they did it was cruel
I remembered someone commented in a Oliver TwiXt ANTM interview video (Can't remember which video) where the reason why they automatically eliminated Magdalena because she wasn't giving them any content. They tried to typecast her as this feisty Hispanic/Latina but it didn't work out on their favor.
I thought so too, she should have stayed longer
Can you react to the episode of this season where they had these beautiful, glamorous gowns for all the girls except Tocara? Like Tocara was told that they didn’t have her size so she was going to have to wear an ugly shirt and pants. When Tocara was understandably upset, the wardrobe people told her she was ungrateful?? Then it made Tocara question her beauty and her size. I hate that episode so much.
I remember this episode - I felt so terrible for her.
Would love for Jessica to add some insight and commentary into this one.
I forgot the gowns but I remembered another where they used lingerie and they did not had her size so they give her a wide robe
She had such a beautiful personality, they made it their mission to break her down

I was so gaslighted as a child by every adult that I actually thought this made sense when I watched it in my teens or 20s. I thought, you are not supposed to understand what older people/"adults" say. It's very eye-opening to see that the problem wasn't with me, or with the models
They broke her down week by week and then eliminated her. So wrong

They love and casted Toccarra in large part because of her personality. SOMETIMES it can get in the way, that was their criticism. When she was eliminated, that personality was, to them, COMPLETELTY GONE.
It bothered me so much that the ocean was diagonal in almost every photo. Also I agree with you, the photos ended up being very boring. They were in Jamaica and they could have done so much more! But they decided on a boring sunset bikini photoshoot lmao

Thank you so much for your comments on cystic acne. I was a high school teacher for over a decade and I had cystic acne the entire time. High schoolers notice everything... I would just show documentaries all day and turn off the lights so I didn't have to be in front of them all. It's awful. And it's not just one day at a time, it's like a week.
At least covid masks helped me hide it! 😁
As a fellow high school teacher I empathise. I have cystic acne and have had it for 15 years. I would get students who mean well give me advice on how to get rid of acne. Not realising I have tried all that, I literally have regular visits with a dermatologist. I got really good at covering my acne, even though you can't cover texture.
I still get acne now but as I've moved into my 30s my hormones have changed and I don't get cystic acne anymore, so I can manage it with my skin care regiment.
I struggled with cystic acne really bad and tried everything the only thing that helped me was cera ve’s sacylic acid cleanser I believe that’s what it’s called. It’s the only thing that’s helped my breakouts stay at bay. Not sure if you tried it 🤍. It’s a battle and I hope one day you can defeat it beautiful 🫶🏽
I get this but is it worth sacrificing doing a proper job educating the kids bc your scared of what a bunch of teenagers will think of you? I’m guessing your pretty young yourself idk but seems wrong. I can empathize but that just imo is wrong.
@@staceymccann8340 I'm only human. My kids aced the standardized tests each year, and I didn't see anything wrong with showing a documentary once a month. It wasn't Disney movies, you know? The kids enjoyed the break, too, I hope.

I always thought the judging was over the top ridiculous and not constructive. I think I remember that Cassie (the girl Janice said looked pregnant) actually did have an eating disorder?
And you could see the way that comment hit her like a ton of bricks. Really sad.

Before they go on the show these girls are put through pyschologic interviews. In those interviews the girls open up about everything they are struggling with (broken hearts, childhood trauma, S.A, diseases, fears, and mental health issues). So, I'm assuming they all knew about Cassie's eating disorder, so they pushed the "you're fat" narrative in order to make her feel bad and have some material. That's also why so many photoshoots are related to the girls fears (heights, underwater, tarantulas/snakes/fish, nudity etc), as well as some challenges. So, it's obvious that Janice was calling out her bodyshape so she could trigger her eating disorder, and BELIEVE YOU ME, THAT'S DISGUSTING AND EVIL (Not only from Janice, but also from producers - which include TYRA BANKS).
It's ironic that Leah opened the envelope and revealed who is automatically eliminated yet she ended up getting eliminated after Magdalena.

The girl Cassie interestingly got the "you look pregnant" + "you don't *need* to lose weight" -- she later in the show revealed she had an eating disorder and they eliminated her for it, I believe.

Hmmm wonder why Anne was tired, being the last girl. Like they started just before golden hour and then went well in to the night, probably with no food for the actual models.
Really love that you talked about the acne thing. When I was a teenager, I had bad acne, and it ruined me. Now I don't have it anymore, but it still makes me feel good that you're talking about it in that manner.

-Cycle 16’s 1st episode, when they fake out the all the girls about who was actually cast. (Yes, it’s that bad)

That cycle 16 elimination was nothing short of CRUEL. I always wonder how many sociopaths and/or narcissists are on that production team, to 1) conceive and 2) execute this idea. I mean you MUST HAVE a personality disorder to have THAT LACK OF CARE for those women. DISGUSTING.

I remember Amanda and Kelle's Oliver Twix interview saying Kelle always had awesome pictures, but they chose bad ones to give her an unfortunate storyline.

Season 3 is definitely on my top list of problematic seasons. The judges were just straight up BULLIES

This is completely off topic, but my maternal side is Syrian and we don't speak Arabic, my great grandfather was the only one to speak it. I'm assuming cultural assimilation took place because he married a white, blue eyed blonde woman and never taught his kids Arabic. My family has barely been in the US for 100 years, and hearing you speak in Arabic, even little words, really inspired me to want to learn Arabic and where my family is from. I first heard Arabic in The Mummy (I'm not sure if it was actual Arabic or Hollywood Arabic lmao) and I fell in love with it, but things like duo lingo and babble weren't around back then lol. Anyway, my sister and I love your videos!!

Out of all the seasons of this show, I can confirm the judges were the WORST in season 3! Hardly ever had anything nice to say about any of the girls!

Hilariously, Anne, who was in the bottom two, had a very successful modeling career while Ya-Ya is a successful actress.

At the very least Tyra helped Yaya with her acne and got her treatment. Doesnt wash away everything else they did, but its one time they really helped a girl
what always bothered me about this season was that comment to Cassie. she was struggling with an Ed and then ends up using it as a plot point. they way this show used these girls was sickening, whether it was trauma or mental illness.

So, a lot of the girls in these early seasons came out to say that when oversees the other girls eliminated were not sent home, they moved them into another hotel room at a cheaper location and kept them overseas, not allowed to leave the rooms, until everyone flew back at the close of the season (or in this case the same day) as all the tickets were purchased round trip in advance.
IDK about later seasons in the 10s as I haven't seen people speak out on those yet.

I feel like Mr. Jay and the judges don't discuss what they want from the photoshoot beforahand. The girls that followed Mr. Jay's advice to more "animalistic" were criticized for not showing the bathing suit enough, so who's to blame there?

There was just so much less regulation in reality TV in the 2000s. It's gotten better but it's still a lesser regulated genre of TV. Just think about the shows around then
Early seasons of Survivor, Fear Factor, Big Brother. We, as an audience, just assumed it wasn't as bad as it actually was.

I didn't see the show when it was on, but I'm enjoying your videos. And, like you, I feel IMMENSE satisfaction when the eliminated girl _doesn't_ hug Tyra. If it were me, I'd probably hug her anyway just to be polite, but I'm sure I wouldn't be feeling it.
They were in Jamaica and this is what the concept was..lol that could be anywhere. That could have been by the Northshore/ Revere beach in Massachusetts lol...could have done something more creative
These girls go through psychological interviews that last hours, and I assume they knew about Cassie's E.D. I find it EVIL to tell a girl who's struggling with mental health issues related to her body and eating habits that she looks pregnant. That's repulsive, but that's not only Janice's fault, it's also the executive producers intention (Ken Mok and Tyra Banks) who put these girls through challenges and photoshoots related to their fears/traumas/struggles and push these narratives during judging panel. I can't believe I used to like this evil show.
Right? Remember when the shoot was literally having then pose in a GRAVE when one of the girls just lost her friend? Regardless of this personal tragedy, I can think of a lot of people would not feel comfortable, be offended or have religious reasons not to be in a damn grave!
I can relate to your cystic acne. I've had it since I was 10 and I'm 16 now. The dermatologist gave me medicine and I've tried countless soaps and creams but it doesn't get better. It really is exhausting. Not only does it hurt, but it's a huge insecurity. I pick at my skin too and that definitely doesn't help but it makes me feel more in control of it I guess.

I completely forgot about this elimination. Can’t believe they did it that way. Why do I feel like they eliminated Magdalena only because she wasn’t “right for tv” 🤔 or wanted her to be a certain way…. But she didn’t want to play the “part” if that’s true good for her on standing up for herself.
Remember these girls sign contracts. So unfortunately, they can be eaten by a bear, LITERALLY, and the show won't be liable. I guarantee.

They probably have them sign some kind of release before they’re selected for the show. So if someone gets hurt, they get all the drama of it without having to worry about the liability.
Tbh I think being eliminated when you don't know it was gonna happen might be better than going to judging, hearing their complaints, waiting for hours to find out what, and having to look tyra in the face and fake hug her. The elimination scenes sounded exhausting to shoot from Mr Jay's book, the girls have to stand under hot lights for the whole judging and apparently Tyra would make them wait for her a lot

I noticed every time there were 14 girls, there was always a double elimination somewhere in the week.
I would love to hear more from you about what you look for/like when you work with models. I love how you stand up for the models here bc clearly they are in a situation that is not setting them up for success. I also just would be curious what you look for in a model!

It’s so funny comparing this show to other reality competition shows. The judges are so mean compared to other shows. These judges like to act like the modelling world is cut throat but all they do is tear the girls down with nasty comments.
10:10 I had a photographer tell me exactly this, and it made me feel so discouraged. He gave me no directions, only criticism. I felt like no matter what I did I looked like a fool. I was so tense that whole photoshoot.
I can't wait till you do the Cycle 9 Plant photoshoot. That's one of my favorites.

That season was so brutal. The end part in Japan?! Good Lordy! The dude is in a rubber hiking sho, but they’re on a stick heel? Clutch those pearls girl, arg! Ann was always a fav, and Yaya and Eva became successful actresses. Janice, was beautiful, and then she ran into the worst plastic surgeon.
They have cycle 23 on hulu now, they have an episode where models wear like 10" crazy heels, someone falls and gets hurt, and THEN you don't even see the heels in most of the shots 😒

Is it just me or do they always make comments about the model looking like a "hoochie" or "Ghetto" when it's a black model? I don't think I've heard them say comments like that about a white model.

Mister Jay was COMPLETELY checked out of this photo shoot. Did you hear him as he was making his comments during the photo shoot? Zero energy behind it. It was just "next" "okay next", very dead, no energy. It's no surprise the girls got no help or direction or did so poorly, Mister Jay clearly didn't even care from the start. It was like he was working a lunch shift at McDonalds just trying to get through the customers and take everyone's order.
