The strange thing is that when the indian empire and the Chinese empire came into contact for the first time via the silk route they decided to maintain the neutrality of Tibet because it was holy to both Indian and Chinese Hindus and Buddhists. I got caught in the middle of the Indian/Pakistan conflict in Kashmir back in 99 as a photojournalist covering the war in Kargil. You just can't imagine how insane the territory is; cliff-face warfare, Billy goats w/guns I kid you not. This was when they were pointing nukes at each other, although they still are, but this was bad. I've covered a few conflicts & none of them were as implausible as that war. They'd be firing at each other from mountaintop to mountaintop & entire mountainsides would be blown out from beneath them. It was horrific as all war is, but fighting in territory like that is unlike anything I've ever witnessed or even seen portrayed on film tbh.

Back in the 90's I read an excerpt of a CIA assessment about a possible war breaking out between China and India in the year 2025. The theory was that this war would be based on the water table. Whoever made this assessment wasn't too far off the mark.

    • @ericspecullaas2841

In truth, water is far more valuable than gold, silver, or billions of dollars. If you were in a desert dying of thirst, you would do anything for water. Water is the live blood of all economics. Look at Chinas crops right now in 2023. They are going to have a 90% reduction in crop yields because of no water, then flooding then the equipment being held up at checkpoints with big fines. At this rate China will have to import food or face a mass starvation of 600 million people.

    Chris:
A very informative video. In 17 minutes I understood the India-China border much better.
I did not know about that 1914 Summit Meeting or the role that Tibet played and plays today.
    However, you say:
"... in response to Chinese build up in 2021 India shifted 50,000 additional troops to their border with China to reinforce the region. They did this by taking 20,000 troops and 6 army divisions off their western border with rival Pakistan to prioritize defense against China instead."
I am not a Military Expert, but I would think that India, with its 1.4 + Billion people, would have enough troops to cover BOTH its borders with Pakistan and China.

valid point, but it is easier to send re-enforcement from closer areas, especially since the enemy on that side of the border is failing on it it's own, their government or the lack of it (since the past two years now ) is weakened, they have other bigger problems to solve than border disputes.. also here are some points if you want to know more : 1) that the Chinese army is conscripts, most of whom did not want to join the army, especially not for a "far off" and "cold and brutal" territory, the economic gains of which are for the CCP leadership.. where as in India it is a volunteer army, the soldiers and officers are real soldiers who are not only battle hardened but also very passionate and patriotic about what they are doing. 2) The US intel to India is a little difficult to buy since historically the USA has supplied info, weapons and airplanes to India's enemy state - Pakistan. and also tried it's best to make sure India does not develop nuclear weapons. several reports suggested that the CIA was involved in the deaths of quite a few Indian scientists. 3) always remember, anywhere in the world especially in Asia and Africa, if you see trouble at the border between two countries you can safely assume the British have a hand in it, and if it is inside the country it is safe to assume the Americans have a part to play. This applies to Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Taiwan, China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, the two Koreas, Afghanistan and most of the disputes in the middle east and Africa. If the Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange disappeared somehow I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these conflicts died out within a few decades of that event too...

When discussing casualties at the border, it is crucial to recognize a significant distinction. India consistently upholds a commendable level of transparency and honesty in providing information to its people. Conversely, the PLA does not share the same obligation and often manipulates casualty figures. Another notable aspect to emphasize is the disparity in preparedness between the two nations. India's long-standing engagement in low-intensity counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations along its borders has resulted in a highly trained and battle-hardened military. In contrast, the PLA relies primarily on numerical superiority and has demonstrated weaknesses in mountainous terrains.

For most of history, India and China did not share a border. There were "buffer" states between them, especially Tibet. And parts of Tibet were ruled or controlled by Indian empires for centuries, especially the western parts. Indians freely traveled to near the headwaters of Indus and Brahmaputra, at Mount Kailash and Mansarovar because they are holy to Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. Buddhists call it Mount Meru. Lots of cultural ties. But these were with Tibetans, not so much the Han Chinese. All this changed only after the Communist China attacked and conquered Tibet. India had police forces helping Tibetan government but Nehru backed down like a lap dog and stayed silent while Mao gobbled up Tibet, hoping it would end there. Of course it did not end there, for Mao soon took over Aksai Chin, the far eastern plateau portion of Ladakh region of Kashmir. And it still controls it, and has been salami-slicing further west into Indian Ladakh at every opportunity. The clashes happened there 3 years ago because India under Modi finally built a motorable road all the way to the northern sector for its military forces; this road run parallel to the LAC and passes barely a couple of miles from it...The Chinese thought they could simply salami-slice right through it, but were confronted and rejected. And so now the tense situation holds.
China would love to take more territory and push India east of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, and threaten India's hold over the Siachin glacier, a sore thumb for China's friend Pakistan.

      It's more complicated than that.
There never was a truly unified Tibet after the 800s, and if there was a Tibetan nation, it consisted mainly of a loose confederation of fortified monasteries in the Himalayas.
Yes, some Tibetans chose to form a unified nation of their own under the Dalai Lama in the 20th century, but there were also others who instead sided with KMT China (and much later, CCP) who did not recognise nor entertain the idea of the Dalai Lama as their leader. The parallels between Tibet and, say Ukraine in the 1600s, Germany in the 1700s and Checnya and the Caucasus in the 1800s and 1900s cannot be ignored.

CCP map includes parts of Japan and Russia because those were territories taken by them before or during WWII by invasion.

By the way, the China dependence on the Pakistan corridor went down significantly as a result of the Ukraine war. Now it is Russia who has no option but to look to China as the main destination for its oil and Gas supply. Russia could have prioritized supplying the Europeans prior to the war. Now China is customer no 1, 2 and 3. So even if the Malacca strait is blocked, China has Iran and Russia to supply them with oil. Russia will build pipelines East wards now. Maybe that’s why Pakistan has dropped down the pecking order too.

Since 600 A.D. the Han Chinese have not been interested in conquering or colonizing anyone, they were peaceful, sedentary, agricultural people who despised nomads who roamed the world conquering and plundering nations (the British and the US in modern times?).
The process of expansion of Han Chinese was finished by the time of Tang Dynasty (618-906) leading to the Golden Age of Ancient China. The period was one of the most peaceful and prosperous of Chinese history.
If you look the map of Tang dynasty you will see that it looks pretty much like present day China excluding Tibet, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and Taiwan.

This project also gives china the ability to armtwiat Pakistan, as the project is heavily Chinese influenced, with very low numbers of actual Pakistani businesses getting work or projects. Pakistan is already in financial crisis. I have no clue how they'll pay it off to the Chinese, who aren't as forgiving. So they'll have to sell land, which they already have if I remember correctly.
