Right now the Chinese communist party and the United States are fighting a hidden spy war against one another. On the frontlines of this battle for China is their minsitry of state security also known as the MSS. This agency has a long history of brutal political purges and interrogation tactics. Right now the Chinese Communist party and the United States are fighting a hidden spy war against one another. And on the frontlines of this battle for China is their shadowy Ministry of State Security also known as the (MSS). It’s one of the world’s largest and most secret agency of all. For context they are said to have an estimated 110,000 agents compared to the CIA’s roughly 21,000. It’s like their version of the FBI and CIA all rolled up into one. They have both a domestic and a foreign mission under one roof. At least that’s how this partially redacted document from the US justice department described it.

But not many people in the west know about the history that informs their tactics today. Not many people know about some of the most brazen intelligence missions where they’ve targeted and killed dozens of CIA agents in their country including in brutal public executions.
I find this agency interesting because they have such a different mode of operating compared than a lot of other nations. We’ll see how they use their power differently. Take for example Jack Ma the billionaire Chinese founder of Alibaba. He disappeared from public view in 2020 after he made the mistake of publicly criticizing China's financial regulators. Then authorities halted the roughly $34 billion dollar IPO of his company Ant Group, which was going to be the worlds largest IPO in history at the time.
Ma missed high profile events which sparked widespread fears for his safety. 3 months later her resurfaced in a video saying he was okay. Jack Ma had learned his lesson, the MSS will come for you if you gain enough influence in China.
Peter Mattis and Matthew Brazil closely studied the MSS for many years and wrote a book called communist espionage that reveals many of the MSS secrets. According to them
"The language Chinese intelligence uses reflects its Marxist-Leninist and revolutionary heritage. The intelligence services are bastions of faith in the CCP. Although they may be practical in terms of techniques and methods to acquire intelligence, this information is filtered through a Marxist-Leninist lens. The implication is that foreign targets are viewed in the worst possible light."
The way it works is the MSS has control of its own separate police force called the “state security police” which is a component of the people's police.

Actually not secretive. They are everywhere in China and in public. Remember that are also responsible for domestic minitoring and enforcement as well. So you see them just often as you would see FBI and ATF agents. It's just the inner working is much less known and secretive as there is no freedom of press or speech, so you won't see investigative journalism on them.

My dad used to work for the MSS back in the 70s through the 90s as a special agent. He was one of the biggest haters of the CCP and Mao that I've ever known.

Many people from that generation joined out of practicality and a need for survival. Today, i think Xi has cultivated a strong sense of Chinese communist-nationalism and many people actually buy into it.

But think about it from the perspective of the average Chinese. The last 40 years have been nothing short of astonishing for most; as such, most people in China actually appreciate what the government has delivered. Had China pursued the democracy route, they would look like India.

About 12 years ago, a friend of mine had to Shanghai for work, he was there two weeks. He no longer thinks I"m paranoid, because spending time with me he's picked up a lot of surveillance detection habits, he says no matter where he went, one of three guys was following him, and no matter where he was he always had the same cabby. Anecdotally, MSS hated sending agents to Hong Kong prior to 1997 as only one out of every ten ever came back. The vast majority either stayed in Hong Kong (this was risky since a lot were assassinated) or more commonly, moved to Taiwan.

Correction: The Ministry of State Security is the equivalent of all US intelligence agencies and Federal law enforcement put together. You can buy rank in there and a lot of promotions are done by referral so the average level of competency is low but they have infinite risk tollerance and will straight up build police stations anywhere at all so occasionally some of them pull off something stupid.

What is the task of Chinese PMCs? My understanding was that they provide security on work sites and projects for Chinese companies abroad. A lot of Chinese companies want to operate in Pakistan, East Africa etc.

Thing is, China does, US has led coups, stolen resources, deposed governments, started civil wars, armed dictators, sanctioned sovereign countries, and bombed developing places into backwaters, at the behest of the CIA paranoia, and military industrial complex love for war. Basically Brutal across the world. China's MSS has mostly stayed in China, and was very paranoid and brutal whenever China was threatened directly.

Intelligence and Counter intelligence was a very tiny part of KGB manpower.

I feel like authoritarianism is inherent to Chinese culture. Even the "Republic" of China was authoritarian. Taiwan would have been no different if it still possess the population China has and would probably become authoritarian again if by a miracle, they somehow unite the mainland. Like how Americans are obsessed with gun culture that even with democratic capabilities to stop them, most refuse to give them up.

It wasn't just the US. It ended up being 102 of these "police stations" in 53 countries. Up here in Canada, it was revealed that we had 5 of them.
I'm not sure who it was but they were so bold as to drive Chinese police cars here in the US to let Chinese expats know they were being watched. Fortunately, US law enforcement shut those obvious ones down.

1) Chinese volunteers & students seem older than they say on official documents.
2) They have facebook accounts which they use but later that becomes ghost accounts.
3) They are very keen on understanding local culture and history... Like tourists, but unlike tourists they are keen to understand current socio-political issues and Geo-economics.
4) If they are good friends they'd like to know your local peddlers or markets.
5) They'll make friends with people with considerable skills or a powerful background.
If you know anyone from Hong Kong, and weren't born there, they will tell you they all lied about their age on their HK ID, its also easier to immigrate if you are younger.
I had made a facebook account, but I only had few friends and when they left we didn't always talk, as time goes on, the account was worthless since there is no one I currently talk to on there.
