  • Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere have been stuck in The United States due to Covid-19 and the travel bans. Things are easing up and they are finally able work on their documents to move to Portugal. They vlog along the way to share their journey with everyone to see how it's done. Subscribe to join the journey!
In this vlog, Josh and Kalie give information on getting their Covid tests done in Miami and actually show you the process. All three of the tests are negative so they are good to go. They show and explain the new process at the airport as there are different checks and security takes a little longer, especially with all of their items for the baby. They then take their first flight to Paris, connect there, and take a shorter flight to Porto. Watch as they take those flights and arrive in Portugal. They are tired but excited as they show you around and move into their new apartment.
Josh and Kalie have been laying out the step-by-step process to get a residency visa for moving to Portugal. Watch the whole journey here: • 3 Month Journey to Por...
Now that Josh and Kalie have finally moved to Portugal, they are shifting their vlog to living in Portugal where they will share how to set up things like your NIF and cell phones and what life is like there. See how they navigate this new adventure and be on the lookout for the next chapter of the journey!

Yay! I was thinking about y'all earlier this week and wondering how the move went. Glad everything moved along smoothly and can't wait to see more videos of you in Portugal. Also, I'm happy to see that you're settling in Porto. I'm about a year out from my move to Porto and I've noticed that there definitely seem to be more expat videos on Lisbon than Porto. So I'm looking forward to seeing more of the city through your eyes. Have fun and thank you for taking us along on your journey, it's been very informative.

You guys had the baby (who is a cute little saint) and all her stuff and you just put one foot in front of the other until you arrived at your hotel. Even your dog is a good traveler! We will have just 2 cats who have never traveled before so I am beginning to figure that out. We've moved internationally several times with and without a dog. Normally, we're more geeked up, but this time, we had no choice but to be chill and patient. We knew it wouldn't be easy moving so much stuff, but we had to just take it step by step knowing that we'd get to our destination in the end and it worked.

Hi David, thanks! We appreciate it and thank you for the question as well! That was actually one that we got just recently in our Live Q&A that we did last week on Sunday. Did you have a chance to see that? Our answer is a bit long and we might be able to actually do a full video on it or a collaboration with another person living in Lisbon so that we can really hash out the differences for you all. In short, we've visited both in the last and we like the laid back and less capital city/cosmopolitan vibe of Porto. Porto feels more down to earth. :-) Does that make sense? @kab17 3 года назад

Hi Josh & Karlie, once again thank you for your reply.
Without a doubt Porto... Don't get me wrong Lisbon us fantastic and the Algarve is amazing but Porto has captured our hearts.
My partner's sister holiday near Faro for 8-9 months of the year to escape the cold winter weather of the UK.
I've been in contact (via email) with VFS Global in Australia, unfortunately they don't deal with Visa for Portugal which means I have to deal directly with the embassy in Sydney.
It should be ok (fingers crossed) but you guys have given us plenty of information (health insurance, place to rent for 6 months, useful websites etc) to get started and things you need to do before your departure.
Once again many thanks and please keep in touch! Hopefully we'll meet up when we arrive into Portugal.

@@kab17 If you be quick (because we dont know this Brexit process), going to be easy because one of you guys is from UK. More easy and smooth process.
      For now:
"""As a member of the EU, you are able to move to Portugal from the UK and stay for 3 months without registering.
For people intending to stay for longer, you will need to register at your local Câmara Municipal (town hall) within 4 months of arrival. Here, you will be granted a residency certificate for 5 years or however long you intend to stay if less than 5 years. Registering will allow you to access services like social security, healthcare and education.
In order to obtain this certificate, you will need to show proof that you’re either employed (pensioner) or self-employed in Portugal, in possession of sufficient funds to support yourself (bank account with money) and your family, or enrolled to study in an approved institution (with sufficient funds to support yourself and your family).
Once your temporary residency certificate expires (5 years), you will be able to apply for permanent residency from the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (Immigration SEF)."""
The other person that dont have UK citizenship need a family reunion visa in Portugal (very easy process to).
""If your relative or spouse has a temporary residence permit in Portugal (issued for a maximum duration of five years) you can apply for family reunification in Portugal for the same duration of their stay. You’ll receive a renewable Portuguese residence permit.
To qualify for a family visa, your relative will be required to prove they have sufficient funds or means of subsistence for you and all family members, as well as be responsible for providing accommodation.
Highly skilled non-EU workers living in Portugal on the EU Blue Card are also entitled to family reunification in Portugal. "
for UE residentes they can make the process in city hall after they stay in Portugal, dont need to go to embassy. But asking in the embassy is always good advise, to know all the details even for UE citizens.

Great to hear that, Cheryl! Have you ever traveled with your pup? Generally, Kalie will take ours to the bathroom, put a pee pad (puddy training pad) down and see if he'll go. Sometimes he does and most of the time he doesn't. We might unzip and offer food or she'll offer it in the bathroom with the pad down first. Does that make sense?
Our Covid test was the RT-PCR test. They say it can take 24-48 hours, but like we wrote in the video (sorry that title slide might have been to quick or unclear; I was worried about that) it only took them 12 hours! Basically, that afternoon, we all went to visit Kalie's grandfather who lives just north of Miami and then my grandmother who lives just north of him near Ft Lauderdale. On the way back to the hotel, we got messages that came in saying that our results were in and we had to check the accounts that we had set up to see the negative results and download the .pdf to our phone to show at the airport.
Hope that helps. Thanks for the support. - Josh & Kalie

As you've seen, our dog is small and fragile so we won't even consider putting him in cargo. He would either freeze in the air or get to hot on the tarmac. :-/ We hope it goes smoothly for you too. Hey, thanks for the question. We're not sure if we've seen you comment on our other videos before. If you have, sorry for our bad memories and if you haven't, welcome to the channel and vlog series. :-)
Mainly clothes and baby toys. In the video when we showed the carry on bags, it was a lot of baby related items that were allowed. I mean, normally, get you a carry on and a personal item. But, the baby also get that even though she's not ticketed the same as us. We just had to pay her taxes. She got a bag (the grey baby bag) and her pack and play was checked. We were also allowed to check her stroller, and car seat and base at the gate. Then we had to pay for the dog. He was in the faux LV bag. In our personal items, we had all of our electronics gear. That's 3 laptops (2 personal and 1 work), our new Rode mic, our small Canon mirror-less camera in bag, a Joby smartphone gimbal that I always forget to use, hence the shaky videos, and a few other things. Lastly, Kalie needed to bring pumps for milk, which were medical devices, and milk that she pumped and froze for the baby, and those were considered medical as well. What a blessing! Apart from that and I know it sounds like a lot (it kind of is), I brought a few things for coffee (a metal pour over and an Aeropress with filters), and some dope Branded Bills custom ExpatsEverywhere hats. :-)
We really try to avoid shipping stuff due to either the time it takes or the cost and we're also kind of nomadic in a sense. 5 countries in 11 years and several short-term stays back in the US in between. We don't like to take too much. This was our first move with a baby and we think we could have done with less (less baby clothes for sure).

As of two weeks ago when we left, you couldn’t leave the US for Europe without proper documentation. Since you’re retiring there, you can start the visa process for that on VFS Global and they’ll submit your paperwork to the consulate which will in turn give your visas allowing you to live in Portugal. You will not be able to do that process from Portugal. Americans are not currently allowed to come to Portugal for tourism. Hope that clarifies. - Josh & Kalie

It was a faster and cheaper option. We could have flown direction to Lisbon but then the layover the rest of the way to Porto was longer than going MIA to CDG to OPO. It would have been slightly cheaper but also the flight time for the flight to CDG was awesome for the baby. Long flight through the night. We probably saved $200 bucks at the end of the day flying out of MIA rather than MCO even factoring in 3 days of car rental, 2 nights hotel, and parking fees. • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 года назад

What a brilliant question! Thank you. Kalie and I love these "dreamer" questions.
Josh-At this stage in our life, I would still choose Porto. I would personally love to be a part of a rehabilitation project of a historical building. If that could be done for less than 1 million and I had to use the million on housing, that's what I would do. If you're saying, I got a million and I could spend it however I wanted, we'd probably be in a slightly better apartment with an extra room for visitors since theres no Covid. Then, I would take the rest of the money and invest it elsewhere along with funding a large media project we're trying to do at ExpatsEverywhere.
Kalie-I'd still live in Porto in a nice big apartment. I'd get a house cleaner. I would want a good view whether that's of the Douro, the old city, or the ocean. But definitely a bigger place like a T3. I wouldn't want our daughter's room so close the living room. Oh, and a better sports package on TV.
Super fun question, Jeremy! Thank you. Porto for the win. We've spoken to several people now about how Porto just has this vibe that's unlike the other places in Portugal and granted we haven't been to Coimbra, for example, but we've been to the Algarve, Lisbon, and Braga so we have a decent sampling.

Porto is a little smaller (we like that) and the people (despite the weather) are warmer. Arguably, both cities have everything you would need on a regular basis. If we were in it for the weather and that was a major decision, we would opt for the south! Our daughter isn't schooling age, so we don't need to consider that Lisbon has better international schools. Bang for buck in Portugal and you probably shouldn't choose Lisbon or Porto. LOL
By the way, we've yet to do a winter here so we'll let you know in March or April if we still prefer Porto because of the weather variance.
T3 in a great location in Porto furnished as low as €1,100 per month but that inventory is pretty low. More realistic is €1,500 plus.
