Regarding the food and beverage. We're definitely trying to remember to do that. Our questions is do you care if we talk about the food like if we like it or not, or is it simply good enough to have the price to get an idea of cost of living?

Before I left I begged the bartender at the Portuguese Sargeant Club if I could have a glass to take with me. At 1st he said no, but I told him I would always remember him and how he always had my beer pouring as soon as I walked in! He smiled and gave me one, then gave me another to match it! Jeff, thank you so much for everything you unpacked here.
Good to know that the audio and video is alright. I'm sure some people aren't going to be happy about the shakiness and we're trying to get used to taking the gimbal out more. When the 3 of us go out, it's a little tricky.
We went to a different neighborhood today and commented about how despite the area we were in being cheaper, we were glad we were where we were.
The NIF is a whole thing now because of Covid. Before, it was super simple! You show up, you go to an office, take a number, sit and wait, and then get your NIF. Now because of COVID the process has changed and there's confusion about it. For those that want to go the simple route now, should probably just pay to have it done before arriving. We're still in the process of doing it the free route and we'll document that as well.
Since you're an engaged person in our community and life now, let me ask you something. How would you feel if we did an affiliate deal with a real estate company? Would you feel like we're trying to sell something? We have several real estate companies that have approached us already about advertising or doing affiliate marketing deals.
Thanks for the compliment on the lid :-) Branded Bills does some great work. Are you a hat guy?
Thanks! We're excited for you guys. - Josh & Kalie

Yes, it's because COVID. We need to make appointment (online or by phone) to go there.

But right now only with appointment.

@neuralcircuit Yes until 6am tomorrow, because was a big holiday (saturday) this weekend where ppl travel to visit the cemeteries to pray/put some flowers in the graveyard of their family, and fordiben because normally you visit your dead family in a cemitery and the the family (who still alive)... I have planned a trip from Odivelas (Lisbon) to Lamego and because of this virus. I dont know if i going to selll the olives from my olive trees this year. I hate this virus.
People travel to far to visit the graveyard of their parents and family, and because Halloween (we call it "Pão por Deus") when kids are asking for cakes and bread (ok lets be real, because USA influence, they dont want bread, they only want sweets).
But the government go to meet to the health portuguese organization (Direcção geral de Saúde) and other parties to make a decision if this going to be permanent.
You can travel if you have one paper from your company (telling where you live and where you work), if the police see that paper you are good to go. Or if you are a student from one high school or College, you need to ask to your school/university to send you by mail the same authorization (where you live and where you study).
Of course if the police see that you are far from both places they can fine you and send you back. But only in 122 municipalities right now (that ones that have more than 240 active cases for 100.000 hab). Is not in all Portugal. Right now in Algarve (where more expats live) only one is affected in Algarve (S. Bras de Alportel), butthe north of Portugal and the region of Lisbon more Castelo Branco are the worst areas right now. I dont understand why Castelo Branco are so affected very low density of ppl and most farms, when the 3rd biggest city Coimbra dont going to have any restrictions because they are safe now.

But, believe me, I'm paying for it. Example: $117 to FedEx 143 pages, El Paso to Lisbon, just to open the bank account. The NIF was a breeze.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  2 года назад

In reality, those are costs that change startup costs by less than $1,000. Bordr's NIF and bank account deal is currently €450, which I don't know how you value your time, but trust us when we say that it saves time in the long run. 😅 We had to get health insurance and we burned 2.5 months of it, while in the States waiting on our visas to come back. We put down the deposit for the apartment when we signed before we arrived in Portugal and we ended up having to transfer another 2 months 48 hours before we moved in so that's sunk cost that most everyone will have to do. So really, the biggest difference is that we moved over without having to get the NIF and bank account, all other costs applied to us. We've since used Bordr to help with our NIF situation. 😅😊 Hope that helps keeps things in perspective and let you know that you're not alone. - Josh & Kalie

My family and I are coming to Porto in the next 5 days, and hopefully run into you as well. By the way, I really would like to know the public transportation there in Porto. Is Uber common as well? And also, how to ask the electricity power to set up stuffs at home in Porto, etc. Asking for too much guidance from you. Apologies,

      No, no worries at all!
Public transportation is fantastic. We've used taxi and Uber so far and both are good. Taxi was metered of course and Uber was obviously simple and through the app with very little wait time where we picked up (downtown and IKEA). Congrats on your move and we're very happy you found us. You've got some binge watching to do. 😉
About setting up utilities, we haven't done this because our place has a management company that we pay directly, but the first question is, did you buy or are you renting? If you're renting, just speak to the company that you're renting from and they should help.

Normally the better way for them is ask a Portuguese neighbor what the service they use to find out the best in the area where they live (but in the center of Porto) any company is good there. The NOS and MEO have fiber in all Porto city.
I live in Pontinha (Odivelas) and when i come to live in here, NOS was the only service with Cable more than 14 years ago. Right now NOS have only Cable and MEO have fiber in my area. I change from NOS to MEO because Fiber is better than Cable, they have a deal to givbe me speed of 120 MB and i test almost every month and never had less than 100mb real speed.
But to them if they stay more than 2 years (mandatory fidelity/loyalty to have a very good cheaper price), the best choice is a package deal with everything.
I pay (without extras, sometimes i use extra data in my phone because i watch youtube videos with HD quality in my phone), the all package for 63€/month, that included Internet (fiber) in my home with 120mb, home phone free to any calls to other home phones inside Portugal and 20 numbers to international calls, 2 mobile phones (both with 6 Gb of data and 2000 minutes) month and more than 200 TV channels, including BBC, CNN, FOX, AXN and Portugueses channels.

@@ExpatsEverywhere Be aware after you had NIF and when to go find the best price in NOS/MEO/VODAFONE/NOWO if you use a lot of data in your phones, the best is ask for more than only 6GB/month. Because sometimes i pass the data, at home/work i use the wifi in my phone and not the 4G. But outside i use a lot of data.
Have you guys make one appointment already ""nas Finanças"" to have your NIF?
One advise i'm giving to my Brazilian clients.
Please ask to your company that provide you health insurance if they cover the C0VID cases.
Because it's a pandemic and no Portuguese health insurance cover when is a epidemic or a pandemic.
That's why is best to have really quick pick your NIF and ask for "Certificado de Residência" in there (Finanças), i do think they can emite that "certificado" there, or you need to go to "Junta de Freguesia" where you live with your rental contract. When you go to Finanças bring with you the rental contract or a bill (Water/electricity/Communication) that have the address and your name to prove that you live there.
Ask in the "Finanças" for your Certificado de Residência" and ask them if you can ask for your public health number (Numero de Utente). I know you have a private health insurance, but because COVID, the private hospital going to send you to the Public Hospital.
Dont be afraid the public hospitals in Portugal are even better than private hospitals. And you live close of 2 the best public hospitals in Portugal (Hospital Sto António and Hospital S. João).
Translate this page (i dont find any English page for you guys).

@@melinda5777 Actually that's not true because they do have a social security system. NIF is an identification number that you need for practically everything. NIF is the Portuguese Tax number and it is one of the first first things to do when you arrive in Portugal. The tax number is the same as the NIF number. (NIF- Numero de Identificación Fiscal) To get one you need to provide proof of address. One goes to a local tax office and asks to open a NIF number. It costs a small fee. 10 euros and 70 cents. The NIF will also show your foreign address. That will mean that you are not originally from Portugal. (This really is for people that start working and paying taxes in Portugal.) One could ask for a NIF without being present in Portugal through an attorney- giving him power of attorney. It normally takes 2 working days to get the NIF number but because of Covid things have changed for now. I've never been to Portugal...yet. But it's my desire and plan to move there in the future. @@korthase14 thanks. We do have fun. We are in that FB group as well as a Porto group. We’re not struggling at all really. Life is bliss. We love to DIY things and how it to our audience but it probably doesn’t get resolved in a single vlog if it takes days or weeks.
Portugal has been the second easiest country for us to adapt to (it’s early, we know).
End of the day, we can’t tell everything that happened in the first 3 days in the video, it would take too much time. The NIF thing wasn’t resolved in that time either. It’s closer to being resolved now, without a lawyer, however, we are having to wait for them to confirm things in their online portal.

You guys rock! Any way we can buy you both virtual coffees/beers to thank you for your videos? So helpful. I’ve learned from research to just get the NIF before you apply or move, hiring someone to do it, costs money though. Sounds like SF consulate prefers to see a Portuguese bank account open already, some are saying, though not sure if it’s really required. And will make getting health insurance easier as you can get it through the bank account. Thinking doing this ahead of time will save a lot of stress. I’ve heard just making sure the NIF opened still has a US address associated with it until you move there. FB expat Portugal groups are amazing for this info.

With the NIFs, yup, you get get a lawyer to do it and it'll cost and it's not that expensive. To be honest, if it wasn't for COVID, we would say, just do it when you get here, but because of COVID, it's probably most sane to just pay a lawyer. The highest price we've heard is €240, but a lot of people in the expat group we are in told the girl that did it, it's too much. The one lawyer that we contacted quoted us €150.

Hi. Just a bit of information that might help you in the future, regarding dealing with burocracy in relation with the portuguese government. Things are much better now. People used to have to wait in lines for quite some time. So, to avoid losing a whole day dealing with this stuff, and because you might have to deal with different departments of the government to solve different issues, I would say every major city in Portugal has a government building called Loja do Cidadão (Citizen's Shop) where they concentrate every department of the state in the same building. So they have everything from SEF to Finanças. I don't believe this site is official, so it might be outdated and sorry but I couldn't find an english version but you can check all the departments that are available there (emlista.pt/lojas-do-cidadao/loja-do-cidadao-do-porto/2217). Since you're always walking around with the stroller, it might spend you some very long walks. I would also say since it is a bigger building, you probably will find at least one person that speaks fluent english in each department. There are also some private companies that provide services there, like electricity companies and also phone companies. The one in Porto is near the Estádio do Dragão (Dragon Stadium). Services might be affected by the pandemic. But you can book everything beforehand.
Also, another thing that might help you is they have a hotline. I would say you should have an option to speak in english, I have never tried it, but call this number for information 300 003 980. And last, but not least, in government buildings there is always a thing that is called priority attendance. So if a woman is pregnant, you take with you a baby that's younger than 2 years old, you have any form of disability, or you're at least 65 years of age, you can cut lines. Workers in public buildings usually pay attention to this stuff and call you over to the counter as soon as they see you, but if they don't, just ask them if you can cut the line. People in line might complain, don't take it to heart. In your case just show them your baby and they will understand. These things can take a while and waiting in line can be stressfull.
I hope you have a pleasant stay in Porto and welcome to the city.

Thanks, Pedro. It surely took you a long time to type all of this up. We appreciate your attention to detail. We've already gotten the baby privilege a few times. Fortunately, nobody has complained and people have been very nice. Our little one is fantastic in the stroller until the stroller stops rolling 😂So it's great to get to cut lines. We're having a great stay in Porto! Thanks for the welcome. - Josh & Kalie

I just discoverd your videos. Thanks for the great shows. I'm getting excited about retiring in a few years, and after considering Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Colombia, I hit on the idea of Portugal, and I'm sold! I went there in 1986 and 1988. It's really one of my favorite countries in the world and I'm so glad to hear the residency requirements and visa process are doable. I wish you all the best and keep the videos coming. One question: do you keep a US bank account and do you keep a US address for any purpose? I'm thinking when I move I'll need to keep my US bank account active, but then do I need a US address for a while or can I just move to Portugal and stay?
