    Hey Expats and Travelers! Thanks for following our (Josh & Kalie) journey. We're thinking about doing our first live video this Sunday as we wait in the airport hotel in Miami. We'd love to connect with you all and answer your questions live. We're not sure how many people want to talk to us, but we're going to give it a go. If you're interested, please reply here what time works best for you. Here are the options. A 30 minute session somewhere between 4-6 PM EST, 6-8 PM EST or 9-11 PM EST? If all times work, just reply ALL.

      Aloha Josh & Kalie, We live on the Big Island of Hawaii and are seriously considering becoming Expats in Portugal. We fell in love with Portugal when we visited there in the Summer of 2019 after walking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. We'd love to hear more about how you two came to the decision to move to Portugal and we're also curious when you think you'll be able to travel there now that you have gotten your visas (especially considering the restrictions for US citizens coming into Portugal). Hi Josh & Kalie,
    Thanks for keeping us posted.
    My wife & I are super keen to hear all the details of what you have to go through to get your pet to Portugal so please know that there is at least one couple (us!) out there that would be super interested in those details.
    We have our tickets booked for Lisbon for early December so we'll be arriving there in the not too distant future and we're bringing our two dogs with us.

      Aww 🥰 That's so nice! Spoiler Alert! This leg of the story has a happy ending. TODAY will end another major chapter in this story and begin a new one as we have our SEF appointments. We hope that you can make it to our LIVE Stream chat about our SEF appointments and how they went. The SEF appointment is basically an immigration visit to review your (our) docs. ruclips.net/video/TSO-YvqzvOM/видео.html (set a reminder 😉)

    I was 24 hours from leaving and didnt have my passport/visa. I was a college student so all my mail went to my college address though I put my parents (the French office assumed it was a mistake and changed it on my behalf). It went to my college town, back to Chicago 3 times! I finally had the post office general meet with me in person and physically put of signs all over the STL mail room to stop it if they saw it come through again. Welp... went down in person and had to literally climb into a truck to pull it out as it was on its way back to Chicago even though all the signs were up. It was the most stressful 24 hours of my life.

      @@ExpatsEverywhere Perhaps I missed it in one of your previous vlogs, but did you discuss how you went about getting housing for your move? Did you have to commit to a long term lease?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  4 года назад +1

      We talked about housing across the first few vlogs as we were going through the housing process ourselves. I used Idealista way back when we lived in Spain. So, I went back to the well to house hunt for Portugal. There are other ways to do this and we discussed them but to your question, we noticed a few property management companies were listing properties that we liked. We contacted them about the listings that we liked. We negotiated a little and then accepted their terms. We committed to a 6 month contract and we have ended up paying 1 month deposit and first and last month's rent. We're under the impression that we can extend our contract, but we're not sure if we will. VFS told us 6 months was all that was necessary and they got that information from the embassy. Hope that helps - Josh & Kalie

    Great news! You will be arriving in the Fall/Winter, make sure you come prepared for the weather, specially if you come to Porto. Thanks, Ivo! We appreciate you watching. We actually know the "Francesinha" all too well LOL. Cafe Santiago is a short walk from our apartment so we shouldn't have a problem rolling ourselves back to home after filling up. We actually really francesinhas but we're also trying not to gain too many lbs/kgs during the winter because let's all be honest, that could happen. We're excited to see Porto again! We'll be prepared for cooler weather although, we might need some better rain gear. :-) Thanks for the great advice! - Josh & Kalie

      @ExpatsEverywhere  4 года назад

      Hey Sharon, the video that we did about Lisbon was actually part of a series that we're running at ExpatsEverywhere for the year of 2020. Community members vote on what city they'd like us to highlight. We do a Review/Preview show every other Thursday. In 2020, our theme is "Great Expat Cities by the Alphabet". Lisbon happened to win the vote for the letter "L". We sourced the information to build out the episode and we shoot and edit it to deliver to our audience.
      Kalie and I used to live in Spain but never Portugal. This will be our first time although we've visited many times.
      Our next Review/Preview drops tomorrow at 11 AM EST and it's on Toronto. We'd love for you to watch and give us feedback! You can also start voting in the community tab for the Great Expat City starting with the letter "U". - Josh & Kalie

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  4 года назад

      Jim, we're humbled. Thank you. Glad you found value in these enough to ask questions and comment here.
      I'll def. do a Facebook Marketplace video because I personally find the story funny although I'm guessing some people are going to be mad at me depending on how I tell the story. I'll try my best to get the video out next Tuesday because we have our Review/Preview video on Toronto on Thursday and this Sunday we're going to do/attempt our first RUclips Live video from the hotel in Miami before we fly out to Porto on Tuesday.
      We've talked about the bags and between us boys, right? (nobody else can see this, i think.) We would be taking a lot less if it wasn't for our 9 month old. That being said, we've been known to travel very light. We're going to have 2 suitcases (checked), 2 carry-on bags, 2 personal items with electronics, a pack and play for the kiddo, along with a stroller and carrier. We're not shipping anything this time.
      Hope that helps and we hope to hear from you on Sunday. If you're interested, please comment in the comment section under the pinned post about what time works best for you! - Josh (& Kalie)

How many weeks did it take to get yours back from start to finish? Hi Cheryl, thank you!
      Have you watched from the first vlog entry by chance?
      We basically document our journey step by step and it can be a guide for you. Congrats on making the decision to move.
      To answer your question, we don't generally drive when we live abroad because public transportation out of the US is usually really good. In Porto, it's great. Metro, buses, trams oh my! Seriously, though it's great. We're in the city center and it's really walkable. We're in Bolhão and pretty much anything we need is within a 5 min radius by foot. Once you get life set up, which takes a bit of walking around the city if you'd like, you'll then just be able to stick to your neighborhood if you want. If you want to explore more, and you should, you can go by foot, metro, bus, tram, or taxi. If you're in Lisbon or Porto, a car is completely unnecessary and we would argue it would lower your quality of life. :-)
      Hope that helps! - Josh & Kalie
