Thank you for your videos!!! have a 12 week old german shepherd, female and it is tough! I care for my 85 year old mother at home and trying to catch my dog in time to take her out is difficult. But you have given me some great tips and thank you.
For current or future puppy owners, take note of what he says about a "properly-sized crate" because it is imperative to do this. My mistake early on with my puppy was getting her a crate that I knew would be too small or just right when she gets 6-8 months old because I knew she would rapidly grow (she is a Bullmastiff). The issue was the crate was so large that she had options of relieving herself in her crate while I did not have eyes on her and sitting or lying down on the opposite end of the crate. Once I recognized my mistake, it was too late, and she had gotten used to going in her crate even when I got a proper-sized crate. It took me almost two years before she was fully house-trained.

I'm pleased to say that I've watched so many McCann dog training vids, including abt potty-training, that everything in this video was familiar to me even if I'm not always good at catching puppy in the act. Good luck everybody. This puppy business was much more work than I had imagined! Hitting the 20-week mark now and noticing we are turning a corner with the potty training a bit and every bit helps 🙄😅

The time when you take them out depends on the size of dog and their age since a smaller bladder means they have to be taken out much sooner

If you don't have the time for a puppy you really shouldn't have one. I don't mean this in a mean way but some people really don't have enough time to have/train a puppy. Is there someone who can come and let your puppy out during the day? A friend, family member, neighbor, or even dog walking service?

I just got a puppy. I’ve trained him to pee within first 2 min he’s put on the grass. Go out after naps, after feeding and after playtime, praise when they wee outside, catch them and tell off for doing it inside. I’ve managed it over our first weekend, maybe I’m just very lucky
I’ve seen so many videos and read so many blogs but this has definitely been the greatest help! Thank you so much, I didn’t realised thay my puppy being so distracted was what was keeping him from peeing outside 😅
What I've found to help is to take the puppy outside as soon as it wakes up and within 15 minutes of eating and drinking. Keep them leashed when outside on the grass. You kinda have to ignore them and let them wander and sniff around, but the trick I find is to keep them moving. Within a few minutes, the puppy should relieve itself. At that point you can praise the puppy. If the puppy has eaten, he will also need to poop, so keep him moving until he does and of course, praise him afterward. Then when you bring him out the next time, try to stay close to where the puppy has relieved himself before.

My pup is a little over 8 months... he won't go in the house at least when I'm around and knows I don't like it...but he goes all the time in his crate it doesn't matter whether he goes out and uses the bathroom or not. He sneaks and does it he'll wait till I'm gone or during when I'm sleep
Thanks for your awesome tutorials on puppy training! I'm about to get a new puppy and I've been doing my research so we're successful from the start. I have a question though. I've recently moved in to an apartment and I'm wondering if I should/shouldn't teach the puppy to go potty in a specific spot/tray in a large "outdoor" balcony for its first potty of the day? And remove this option as the dog matures and is able to hold its bladder until I am ready to walk him outside? Thank you so much for your help !
Make sure to guard your bed! It is one of the favorite places that puppies do their deed. It expensive to replace the bedding and a new mattress. Place a full array of puppy pads on top of your bed just in case!
My dog is 8 months. And from a puppy mill. She is not going to the bath room at all. I have been watching her all the time. I can't teach her where to go until I can get her to go. It's been 3 days. Your video is so calm. I want to use your tips.
Do female puppies take longer to get bladder control? I have mostly had males and they trained relatively quickly, I’ve had 1 female and she had accidents up to 2 years old, now I have another female and it seems like she just can’t hold it to get outside when the urge hits.
We just became a guardian family to a 2 year old dog. She has been resistant to eliminate when we take her out and seems to "hold it" and is definitely not going regularly as she did with the family before us. I have recently tried just standing in one place when we take her out because it's obvious that she's very distracted but when I stood still in place she sort of copied me. I stood still for 15 minutes and she did the same and she absolutely has to go potty as she hasn't gone at all this morning. I know there will be an adjustment period as we are new to her, but how can I help her with this? She's also not very treat motivated at this time. Thank you for any tips
Try keeping it under five minutes outside Go outside give a quick go pee or whatever command you use for it and wait up to five minutes only If they go treat or acclaim reward them and if they don’t go right back in and then play a minute or two to distract them and take them right back out for under four minutes You want them to get associated with going out is exactly the time to release themselves. Not a time to fool around or go play
I never encountered this issue with any of my Dobermans. I did my part to avoid accidents, but they just seemed to have understood the house rules from day 1.
@@mattr882 Your mileage may vary. That said, I had an extremely intelligent and well mannered older alpha female that did a lot of the work keeping the younger dogs in line and following the rules.

I've read that puppy accidents can continue up to one year. Their learning isn't a straight line + adolescent hormones can make them forget things as they mature. Don't punish - ignore mistakes if you don't catch them. Uh-uh if you catch them, then take outside quickly + praise. Don't stress dog. Stay on a schedule to ensure success. Is your dog getting enough ex ercise? Is there any change stressing your dog(new schedule, housemate, new food, etc)?

I’m suffering cause my puppy will go outside for hours and when we come in, she decides now I can go. And I feel the wee wee pads was the worse mistake I ever did
@@Mommieofqueens ugh i’m sorry, try to prevent her from coming in until she uses the restroom outside (take her out when you know she’s ready to go so you’re not outside forever) and when she does reward her! my dog isn’t pee pad trained anymore but only outdoor now, she kind of just started doing it on her own she doesn’t feel comfortable peeing in the house but at one point before she learned to go outside she was only going on my carpet which was a nightmare. it always gets better with time!

Please help! I have a 5 month Beagle who sleeps on my bed every night. She's mostly house trained, but now has peed in my bed twice in the last 2 weeks... why has she started doing this? How can I stop it? I really don't want this to become a habit
Our puppy is housetrained and doesn’t go in the house. However we are trying to get him out of the crate at nighttime, and he will have accidents in the night when not in the crate. In the crate he has no accidents. Are there any tips?
This is great advice and I’ve never had issue house breaking a dog. My issue is I have a pitbull who’s very overbearing with the new puppy. He doesn’t hurt her but he’s up her butt 24/7. So it’s very distracting and hard to get the puppy to focus. I get so busy with the pitbull and telling him to go to bed and stay that I lose track of the little one and sure enough she peed or pooped while I was dealing with the other dog. I mean I can’t even pee pad train her. The big dog lays on like a bed so she can’t even access the pee pad. 🙄 Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for the content and any help.
Going to try this on our new puppy. We thought he would figure it out from our other dog, but no chance. We take our puppy outside hoping he'll do his business but he just sits down and stares up at us like " what are we doing here?". Lol
When you just miss an indoor accident and they no longer have to relieve themselves, do you still recommend taking them outside or has the opportunity been missed? I’ve taken my puppy back outside but given the fact that he already went inside he longer had the desire to relieve himself outside. Do I wait for the next go around and chalk this accident to a missed opportunity? Great video!
Mine had 3 accidents today just when she was doing great I mostly missed all 3 I seen her do it but she had already made a little puddle altho everytime she still went pee outside right away ... she has a bladder the size of a pee I literally have taker her out every 30-45 min Unless she is taking a nap or at night she can last long time when she's asleep..... I hate potty training both puppies and kids hope this gets better.
So at the puppy point a lot of it is scheduling breaks and telling them what's good and what isn't. But once they know that, how do you teach them to tell you they need to go outside?
My problem is, he actually goes outside AND also does inside. He walks himself outside to do all his business without us telling him (we trained him) and still also pees inside. He hadn't done this in a month, and now here he is doing it.
I’m being proactive and doing all of these steps. I’ve just adopted my puppy from the pound. She’s used to going “inside” where she sleeps inside their big kennel/room they get. I literally walk around for at least 30 mins each time and she just does not want to go outside. I don’t know what I should do. Also I did put her I. The crate at night and she pooped in the crate where she sleeps. Part of that of course that she’s used to it. It’s not her fault. I’m not sure if I just keep doing what I’m doing and eventually she will get it when she’s ready or if I need to change what I’m doing? Btw she is 5 months and I think she is pitty/ lab mix
my tiny little papillon is only 3 lbs and his pees are so so tiny and frequent. any tips, or should I accept I might have to deal with puppy pad training for a little bit
I haven't found a noise that will startle and interrupt my puppy's accidents fast enough that I can get to her, especially when she's inside the play pen and I'm outside, I can't get there in time. I've tried a funny noise with my mouth, I've tried clapping, yelling "no", she looks at me but continues to pee or poop where she is... I wonder if she's learning that when she potties on the floor I start running to give her attention and that's actually reinforcing it. Should I leave her in the crate the whole time I'm not monitoring closely instead of free inside the play pen?
I pick them up and that works better. Now that Stevie is 12 weeks old his create is near the door. Open the door open the create. Keep your nose out of your phone's 😂

I am like a helicopter parent to my new 10 week lab puppy. Constant watching and outside every 30 to 60 minutes. I find myself limiting water but need to avoid deprivation.
I am using the timer on my Fitbit to keep track of the peeing!!
Hello Elizabeth how are you doing today
Thank you for sharing... incredibly helpful!! 👍
Hello Rose how are you doing today
You just take them out literally every 20 minutes and mine was potty trained the day before she turned 3 months as well as my first pup..
My pup is a little over 8 months... he won't go in the house at least when I'm around and knows I don't like it...but he goes all the time in his crate it doesn't matter whether he goes out and uses the bathroom or not. He sneaks and does it he'll wait till I'm gone or during when I'm sleep
How big is his crate? If it’s too big he will go in it but if it’s just the right size for him to sleep in then he won’t
The crate is probably too big.
My pup just sits....sometimes I can’t even tell she peed. Poop I can catch...maddening Seems I’m watching her constantly. She’s a shih tzu..
Things any better?
Exactly, is he/she sitting or peeing? omg
@@AgentSmith911 Right? 🤦♂️
I'd also like to ask this question!
This is so helpful
Great advice. Thx
Best dog training system
My puppy is 3 months old and doesn’t have his shots yet to go outside. Is the interrupt technique good to use in the meantime?
I have an older dog that has refused to stop "marking his territory" inside. Is there a video on this. He is a chauauaha/terrier mix.
Do female puppies take longer to get bladder control? I have mostly had males and they trained relatively quickly, I’ve had 1 female and she had accidents up to 2 years old, now I have another female and it seems like she just can’t hold it to get outside when the urge hits.
great video!!!! thank you so much
I like this! Thanks
My dog is so good at potty outside but always every day when I sleep he does it inside every day
We just became a guardian family to a 2 year old dog.
Try keeping it under five minutes outside
Go outside give a quick go pee or whatever command you use for it and wait up to five minutes only
If they go treat or acclaim reward them and if they don’t go right back in and then play a minute or two to distract them and take them right back out for under four minutes
You want them to get associated with going out is exactly the time to release themselves.
Not a time to fool around or go play
thank you this vid was so helpful we were on the track of giving our puppy away but this helped her a lot
This puppy doesn’t chew on the leash 🤩
This guy is great
I never encountered this issue with any of my Dobermans. I did my part to avoid accidents, but they just seemed to have understood the house rules from day 1.
This is not the case with my doberman.
@@mattr882 Your mileage may vary. That said, I had an extremely intelligent and well mannered older alpha female that did a lot of the work keeping the younger dogs in line and following the rules.
''Or there's an Interesting ant on the ground!''...Haha! so very true 🐜
Lmao. I know right!
@@carolynfolsom6626 Puppies are so inquisitive...Everything so new to them. So sweet to see their inquisitive ears and noses sniffing...Even if they aren't concentrating on doing a wee/poo.
Any tips for older dogs that still arent housebroken? My puppy is over 10 months and still has accidents, even though I know they can hold it for 8-10 hours!
I'm going through this exact same issue with my 10 month old puppy so I guess I have to start back at square one
What about a 9 week old puppy, was under impression outside was a no no due to bacteria infection.
Informative video. What's the plant next to the crate?
What about If you live on the second floor and it’s not as easy to go outside? Patio potty? Do you have a video on apartment living?
I just found your channel and it’s great. Thanks.
Am going to try this, I just got a American eskimo 2months and 8 days I don't know if it's too quick for him to learn, I take him outside he doesn't pee back inside the house he pee
My puppy is finally went to the bathroom on the grass 😄
so do you guys try to avoid using puppy pads? my almost 5 month old puppy is pad trained but i want her to start going outside, should i take the pads away and work on her outdoor restroom training?
Iam doing both
Maybe move the pads outside and eventually take them
Away?
@@Mommieofqueens oh I so agree with you!!!! We obtained a surrendered chihuahua and she was trained on pads. We have pee pads under litter boxes(we have cats). If we take away pads, she will find a rug!!! She will never let us know she has to go out..just finds a pad and goes!!!!
thank you it really helped....
What about training an adult rescue dog new to your home? Please
Please help!
I have a 5 month Beagle who sleeps on my bed every night. She's mostly house trained, but now has peed in my bed twice in the last 2 weeks... why has she started doing this? How can I stop it? I really don't want this to become a habit
Awesome. I’ll try it out
Do you wait until fully vaccinated due to parvo?
Our puppy is housetrained and doesn’t go in the house. However we are trying to get him out of the crate at nighttime, and he will have accidents in the night when not in the crate. In the crate he has no accidents. Are there any tips?
Leave him in the crate then. He's not ready to be out of it.
Very helpful training advice!
Thank you
This is great advice and I’ve never had issue house breaking a dog.
Love watching your training
Thank you for giving these ideas this is gonna help me a lot with my puppy
Hello Majid how are you doing today
AMAZING VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do I do if I live 40 floors up and it generally takes me a few minutes to get outside
Pray, and maybe think about temporary diapers.
Did you come up with Any answers to this? Getting mine today and live in a flat
Going to try this on our new puppy. We thought he would figure it out from our other dog, but no chance. We take our puppy outside hoping he'll do his business but he just sits down and stares up at us like " what are we doing here?". Lol
Hello Brenda how are you doing today
My puppy is 6 months old .will not poop on puppy pads. Never not punished .not scared. Almost stubborn. Sneaking
Mine will do the tiniest dribble inside before I catch them, take them outside and they dont do anymore
Mine had 3 accidents today just when she was doing great I mostly missed all 3 I seen her do it but she had already made a little puddle altho everytime she still went pee outside right away ... she has a bladder the size of a pee I literally have taker her out every 30-45 min
Unless she is taking a nap or at night she can last long time when she's asleep..... I hate potty training both puppies and kids hope this gets better.
So what were the tips in this video?
So at the puppy point a lot of it is scheduling breaks and telling them what's good and what isn't. But once they know that, how do you teach them to tell you they need to go outside?
Use bells at the door
Hello Jenna how are you doing today
@MCCanndogs how can i train them in apartment? i have a ten weeks border collie
my puppy always poops and pees in the house so this is going to be useful
Thank u il try
My problem is, he actually goes outside AND also does inside. He walks himself outside to do all his business without us telling him (we trained him) and still also pees inside.
He hadn't done this in a month, and now here he is doing it.
Some puppies depending on breed take a year and some breeds like to sneak a pee because they know they can get away it
I’m being proactive and doing all of these steps. Btw she is 5 months and I think she is pitty/ lab mix
did your pup ever learn? mine is 5 months too and she’s always pooping inside our house even after I took her out.
I have not gotten a puppy yet but I will soon 😊🎉❤
What about at night? How long can they last in their crate without going? How many times should I get up and take her outside during the night?
I don't understand. My puppy sometimes does a wee inside, 3 mins after going outside. Doesn't seem to empty bladder first time....
My 6 month old dachshund does the same thing
my tiny little papillon is only 3 lbs and his pees are so so tiny and frequent. any tips, or should I accept I might have to deal with puppy pad training for a little bit
Omg my dog looks exactly like that and her name is Piper too!
Maybe they are a different breed idk but mine is a mix of golden retriever and Labrador
Yeah
