Followed these same steps from another video you made some time ago with our staffy puppy that we got at 8 weeks old, less than 4 weeks ago. She is already fully toilet trained and has been for a couple of weeks bar only a couple of incidents where she got really excited by visitors, which is more our fault than anything. She already sits by the back door when she wants to go outside to use the toilet. Great tips, thanks for this and your other content, it's been a huge help.
If there's one video that would be really helpful from you, it would be a run through of the developmental stages of a puppy and what you can expect at certain ages, when you should start work on obedience, at what age you should expect behaviour - if there's one thing that I think is missing from your videos it's the idea of whether your techniques are age appropriate e.g. you probably wouldn't leash pop an 8 week old puppy, but when would you?
My pup has a dog door. She is still too small for me to want to leave the door open for her. I don’t want her to get out of the yard. So I basically have been doing the puppy pad & take her outside. The 1 hour timer is a great help. I must say there is as much training for me as there is for her. Been 20 years since I had a pup. I forgot some of the training things. Thanks for videos. I love the way you train with rewards and not beating.
Thank you so much! Your video are truly helpful. Sending love ❤️ from Dallas.
love the videos. keep them coming!
Brilliant video and I love the fact you say to take them to "we're you want them to go" as most videos I watch all bang on about tak8ng them outside or on to grass. Unfortunately, I can't do that, so it's padd training for us. Not what I prefer, but the only option at the moment. Thanks pal 👌🏻
found this channel after the recent passing of my dog. I decided a while back the next puppy would be a great dane and while i wont be ready till after christmas i want to start getting my research in now and i feel i have learned a lot just gettingthrough these videos. Great job
I havent found it yet but have you done a video on training a dog on getting them into a routine where cleaning their teeth doesnt turn into a scene from Jaws. Chewie & Solo never bit but they REALLY didnt like brushing their teeth
I just discovered the channel... I can confidently say this is the realest Canine channel
You would make an amazing horse trainer too! You're a bloody champion!
It feels good to know I was doing the right things
It takes time. I was smug because I trained my 11 week old Border Collie to go on command. The problem was, unless I took her out at the usual likely times and commanded her… she’d just pee and poo anywhere… couldn’t care less about not going inside.
Just keep doing the right things consistently and eventually it does click. Ultimately, pups can hold it in longer as they grow so even if you have a pup that couldn’t care less about doing it in the house, the number of cleanups falls dramatically.
Thanks Will!
Such great puppy potty training tips! Sending love and warm greetings from Missouri.
Just got a barely 8 weeks old akita inu and even tho he is mostly an angel when it come to basic behavior (for a curious puppy nway) AND already only poop outside (he seem very proud of it somehow 🤣) when it come to number 1 I never tought such small things would need to leak so much. The alarms every hours really seem to have reduced his bad habbit of just doing it randomly but the little bugger just wont ask for the door even tho he LOVE going outside.
You are wonderful! Thank you. I just wanted to share a tip that I have held close throughout my life with my puppies.
Teach your puppy that the safest place to be is BY YOUR SIDE.
Such helpful videos! Thank you. What if my puppy is having accidents in her crate at night?
Awesome Will 👍
My pittie spent 2 1/2 years out of his 3 years in a shelter kennel in his own feces. Toilet training has been SO hard. He also urine marks because he wasn't neutered until 3
1st here . Just watching another of your videos .
We're getting a French bulldog in 5 weeks and I've watched almost everyone of your videos . I believe I'm 95% ready . The 5% is just winging it haha . Love you're content

I take my havanese 13 weeks old every half hour ,but she will go every 10 minutes at times,my mat was just about flooting out the door .I praise her a
every time ,but many accidents during the day ,
Will Atherton, how do I train my 8-9 month old dog to be potty trained? Ever since she was a puppy she lived at my grandma's house and has been urinating and excreting her waste in the garden and recently she moved to my house and she's been urinating and excreting her wast in the garden here and has been killing the grass with her urine. We tried using a urine spray to lead her to where we want her to go but it just doesn't seem to be working as she has been doing her business in the grass her whole time at my grandma's house, she doesn't know other places to go except the grass. Can you please make a video on how to make a non potty trained dog to be potty trained at an older age when they have been urinating anywhere they wanted? Thanks! I love your videos!
We have rescued a 10mth old puppy, he is underweight, & before I took him in he had spent all young life in a flat & hadn't seen grass. He is used to puppy pads. In the 2 days we have had him we have had some success & he has had 2 wees outside & 4 💩...Will my idea of gradually moving the pad closer to the backdoor, then outside work??
I have a couple questions. See I’m a truck driver, I can’t exactly stop every hour, and I try to take my dog out every time I stop. But I’ll have time where I stop to check in and I have to get out of the truck and my dog will go potty in the 2 mins I’m gone. And my sleeper and cab space is too small for a crate. Are there any special tips or advice you can give me so we can get this right?
We adopted a 14wk Am Bully and thought he was toilet trained because he always did it outside. Turns out if the external doors are shut he doesn't ask to go out and just does it at a door, any door. We are always home but still have not been able to catch him in the act to correct quickly enough. I'm now setting hourly alarms and will take him to the same spot every time.
I take my dog out every hour on the hour, he doesn’t use the restroom often when I take him out but it will hit late at night and that’s when he will release his bladder, he is scared of the rain and dislikes the cold, so he just straight up will not go while we are outside and after being in a shelter since birth he just feels more comfortable emptying his bladder inside anytime I walk away (in his kennel) but I know he doesn’t like it because he acknowledges and pouts when he does
at what point do you reduce the frequency of walks/go outside for your dog to pee/poop.. my dog is 6 months old she mostly goes outside but if i miss going out for like 2 hrs she lands up peeing at home. was wondering how many times do i need to go out .. and when can i stop every hour to maybe once in 2-3 hrs and 4-5 hrs and so on n so forth. thanks
My dog likes to lay with me at night and he has no accidents but the moment I get up and that wakes him it’s a race between me and him
Hi will watches all of your videos and I have a question that none seem to answer not even on your website
I have a 20 week old french bulldog and she is toilet trained to go on puppy pads she will only go on the floor if there’s no puppy pad around
Also I live in an apartment on the top floor no garden or I believe she would of already been trained to go outside in a garden
What do you recommend me to do is my only option to keep her on puppy pads now
Or how can I now change her from puppy pads to go outside I will still go down on the hour every hour if it will work or am I past the point of no return now haha ?
Hope to get a reply mate I’ve taught her how to sit and lay down in french and English after watching your videos thought it was a hilarious idea by yourself 👍😂
Love the videos. Would be interested in your suggestions on how to keep a dog - 1 year old - from chewing on their blanket in their crate. I have tried bones in the cage already. Other than this they are great. Also, suggestions on how to handle having two litter-mates. I - because I am stupid - could not decide between two pups in a litter so I got them both. They are a year old and doing well for the most part, but would love to hear your thoughts on how to handle training litter-mates. Anyway, keep up the great videos!
I’m no dog owner expert but I have had dogs b4 with the same issues and the solution is keeping there favorite chew toy in the cage with them that paired with teaching them they can’t shew on it by correcting the behavior is the solution that worked for me
Give them a frozen kong so they stay busy for over an hour
Hi, has anyone got any advice for a rescue who keeps having accidents in the house even after being taken out? Shes a 3 yr old swiss shepherd, Ive tried the on the hour thing, praise massively after she does something but sometimes if she doesnt want to go, she will cower and lay down and whine for half hour until we decide to go back in. Then will go on the kitchen rug not long after. She will cower and roll over when i notice so i just put her outside while i clean up. She knows its wrong and i dont scold her its just getting abit frustrating as we are always letting her out and as i say, loads of praise when she goes. When we got her about a month ago, she wouldnt even poo unless we were with her in the garden as she just sat at the door whining. Any advice appreciated, thankyou x
I’ve just rescued a 2 year old pocket bully who was abandoned in a cage. 😢 I haven’t put her in a Crate as I feel that would bring back some trauma? What do you think? And thank you for the video
I just adopted a 3 year old German Shepherd/ Yellow lab mix, he has accidents when he gets excited or scared. When we wake up in the morning, as I walking him to the door to go out, he tries to jump up and he pees a little, same thing when getting home from work. What can I do? He also won’t go potty in the backyard, only on walks.
will these steps still work with an older dog of 1-2 yrs old who's been rescued and never house trained?
My 5 month old puppies have been getting really good about toilet training but last night I left them and went for a bath. They had been allowed into the garden beforehand and they are crate trained so have control of their toileting but after my bath, probably an hour after I left them, they had gone to the toilet on the living room carpet. I don't know if it was a mistake or separation anxiety. Any thoughts anyone?
Hey, looking into getting a golden retriever gall to train as my service dog. But I'm a bit lost in where to start, it's a very overwhelming thing to consider and it's a bit of a far cry for help I guess but it would be well appreciated. I'm trying to come up with a bit of a training guide for the first few weeks. I will be getting the pup at 8-12 weeks

Hi Will, can you teach toilet training to a three year old rescue dog?
What about a problem puppy that gives no warning, and just darts, & goes on the floor?
We can't seem to break her of biting, either, any useful tips?
One last thing, she gets mad, & goes into attack mode when she's not given what she wants, & when she gets picked up. How do we end that behavior?
I’m struggling. I got 2 puppies from a family that just had them going in pads in the house in a kiddie pen. Honestly don’t know if they ever went outside before I got them. They will go outside for me and we do the whole celebration then 10 mins later pee in my kitchen
I’m not sure I inderstand. Do we take them out every hour?? Because that’s not realistic, or is it just for the puppy phase and do we increase time gradually?
Do you give out to them when they make a mistake ?
I feel like I’ve got there with my puppy, she goes outside, I’m rewarding her, saying Yes, making a fuss. However, when it’s raining no matter what I cannot get her to go outside. I stand in the rain show her, it’s all okay. Make a fuss when she’s out. But she never stays out for long and then goes inside to wee/poo. Help!!
Our 9 week old red fox lab is struggling with toilet training. I’ve caught him ready to squat for # 2 and I rush him outside and then he just won’t go. #1 is less of an issue but he really prefers the hardwood floor over the grass. All other training is going quite well but TT is not going so well.
You need more patience. Take him out and sit out there for an hour or more eventually the dog will shit and you can rewards that
@@overkill1025 we hung a jingle bell from the door knob and coaxed him to ring it every time we went outside. That’s made a huge impact on him notifying us when he needs to go outside. Now he gets rewarded for going outside and again moments later when he does his business.
Make up a hardwood square if he starts, pick him up and put him on the square. Keep that square, or many squares outside and he will eventually do it in those areas... we have two Tenterfield pups at 14 wks who use a synthetic grass patch with a drain ... one is inside one is out ... it has worked so far
You need not to give him a choice. Watch him and taie him outside. If he won't go after 10 mins. Go back inside. Any sign he wants to go, back outside. Show him outside is where to go. Repeat if necessary. He will go .You need to be patient .
We just got a six month old dog. We are not home all day and sleep at night. How can we take her out every hour?
Does this work with a non British dog?
How do I get him to tell me he needs to go out toilet , as when door is closed he go for wee by the door n not cry or anythink to go out
How exactly does the end goal of "fully potty trained" looks like? How often do you go out after one year with this puppy?
It means practically no accidents and the only accidents are gonna be more based on their access to the right spots than inability to control themself, perfect toilet training usually means they know how to alert you to be taken outside as well
Sorry i have soo many questions
If i am using their food as treats throughout the day for training should i be reducing that from their daily intake of two or three times a day so as to avoid over feeding them
In a previous comment i ask about a video for training them to sit and accept cleaning their teeth but have you done a video for introducing them to the car so it is a less traumatic event
Really enjoting the channels keep up the good work
Yes deduct the amount you use for training from the daily food amount.
👍😊
My 6 month old puppy growls at people, dogs and bicycles. I have tried different techniques, blocking his view, rewarding he she does not growl etc but a month later nothing is working. Any advice please?
I gather this is due to not socializing the puppy at a younger age. (8 to 16 weeks is critical for socialization). When the behaviour happens divert with a toy. If behaves reward with a treat. Seek out a professional trainer .
I am crate training mine and she is going outside. but she pees in the kennel while I am at work. How do I get her to stop. I let her out before I leave and I go home at lunch and she has peed in the crate. she doesnt seem to mind being in it and I can't figure out how to get her to stop. the longest she stays in there is around 4.5 hrs. Pit breed and 6 months old.
Your crate may big too big
I have a 14yo female golden retriever & a recently owner surrendered adoption of an 18 month female chocolate lab. Golden is great no issues, the lab we are working through videos. She came potty & crate trained along with a few other limited commands which also working on and she is picking up on training quickly. The problem is I have a friend’s house 7mo female husky whom uses a doggy doorbell which I taught her and is housebroken at her home, however EVERY time she comes to my house, she uses potty outside but within 15 minutes and continued through her visit she pees on my GR bed or the floor and also poops in the house. We close the bedroom door so she can’t get in there but she will stop playing walk to a specific spot and potty. No warning and no tells. I’m at a loss how to fix this. The friend whom is here the whole visit as he has none of this from her at his home where he has 3 little designer dogs who do pee in his house. Any suggestions for the husky at my house is greatly appreciated. Recently I cleaned up her accident and put it in a spare crate with her, I’ve cleaned it up and taken all accidents outside and told her the potty command. I’ve told her no when we do catch her and scoop her up to finish outside. Yesterday day in 5 hours she had 6 accidents. We know it’s her bc poop is much smaller than my girls and because she squats and walks/waddles while peeing. I use odor neutralizing spray to clean up the hardwoods. Today out of desperation I cleaned it up. And then wrapped the tied and knotted poop bag on her collar and after that there were no more accidents on Sunday. Thank you in advance for your advice and suggestions
After a year…how is today? Thank you
When do you or the dog sleep if every hour on the hour? You mention “after a nap” but when is a nap if every hour on the hour? Seems a conflicting message which would be great to clarify
He’s saying every waking hour, on the hour take them out. And if they wake up from a nap as well, take them out too. Don’t overthink it
😂😂
What a dumb dumb
My dog is potty trained down stairs but whenever he’s up stairs he wants to go pee or poop up there can someone help me figure out why
i have two 1yr old pups. I have been really bad with training and need help. one dong is a shep/husky and one is a lab/husky. how do I keep them from running off and walk together. HELP
leashed always, inside and out, till you have control
Leach them
Expose them by taking them on a walk whenever you are chanced
Train them not to fight each other as they will always battle for the top dog position
My husband and I work a full time job. We are getting a 4 month old puppy. Should I leave the dog in a crate during the 8 hours I’m at work? Or should I leave him in the backyard?
you should not leave them there for 8 hours. Hire someone from wag or rover to come let the puppy out after 4 hours and walk/play with it. Hopefully the puppy is crate trained by now.
dont leave a puppy alone for 8 hours full stop
When my wife got our 8 week old shiba puppy, I slept on the couch for a few weeks and took him out almost every 30 minutes, I think I went a little overboard because he sits by the front door now when he doesn’t need to go, I just wait till he whines till I let him out haha
My pup is 15 weeks cause when I got him he was paws off ground due to not having all the shots. He learned to go on the wee pad very quickly but now that he can go outside he’s just not wanting to go. I know it’s a process and patience lol. I take him out first thing in the morning and he won’t go. I put him back in his crate and wait another 30min-1hr. I take him back out and still nothing. I don’t want him to keep holding it in so I ended up letting him go again on the wee wee pad.
I really don’t know what else to do - for context I don’t have my own yard or anything. I tried bringing out a wee wee pad (used and new) and still doesn’t want to go. Please help with some advice 🙏🏽
💕👍
My dog tolerates when we go for a walk and when we come home he does everything . The puppy is 4 months old and he has never peeed or pooped outside 😢
I live in a flat, my pup is 5 months and she isn’t toilet trained and isn’t vaccinated (I just got her) I can’t take her to a grass area…where do I start 😵💫😭
My now 2.5 year old GSD pees and poops on command. Its so cool.
My puppy is now 8 months. He’s still not trained. He has crate anxiety so can’t use it. He starts pooping all over himself and his crate all of a sudden while he’s in there. He’s an all white poodle. I need help. Or puppy has to go.
our 12 month old cocker spaniel is "house trained" during the day, we go out for a walk before bed where she relieves herself, but she still manages to have a pee in the night. We've trained crate training, but she still does it. I've set an alarm to take her out before she pees, which worked for a while, but she has now worked out a routine where she now pees before my alarm goes off, and now she barks to say "hey, I've had a pee - come clean it up"...every day at 05:30. Any tips to help break this habit?
Get up at 5 to let her out that’s the time she is saying I need to go by 5.30 so you need to beat her to it
One of my puppies does the sniffing and circles. One just squats and goes like he has a Chinese bladder.
What does "give them the opportunity" mean? I put her in the right spot and she just runs off. How do you keep her there to go toilet?
!!!
I would love to see a video about excitement- or submissive peeing, als this is another facet of the toilet training you're treating in this video.
Potty training can be very frustrating for some people. This video has a lot of useful information. If you'd like to go a bit more in-depth into the behavior behind it, and how to use that for dog potty training, check out this video ❤:

Tips start at 1:16. Ur welcome
My 1-1/2 year old female pitt wakes us up at 4:00 AM to let us know she just shit in the floor....confused dog!
My dog just won’t pee or poop at home anymore after doing his things outside. However, there are times that we don’t want to bring him out, like having a rainy day or a storm. How can we encourage him to go to toilet at home during those days?
Don't
Lol a dog just for sunny days????????????
I would not do that. Going out on the rain, snow is part of owning a dog. Deal with it. If you don't want to then maybe you are not ready to care for a dog.
My puppy doesn't care about any type of reward when outside...
I keep taking my puppy outside and will stay outside for about 30 mins or more, and she will wait til we come back in... EVERYTIME. Please, someone help. I'm losing my mind.
I’m in the same boat, did you manage to get past this behavior because it’s 2 am and I literally am going to lose my mind
mine is doing this haha. im trying taking her in for 5 mins when shes refusing, then bringing her straight back out, so she learns she cant just whine her way out of it. it has resulted in me standing in the rajn at 2am for last the last 3 days tho...
Every hour, when they wake up, when they eat or drink, when they play...........
My pup went pee outside and literally came inside and peed again. Dang.
I have one of those! I learned to wait for the extras. Once she peed 7 times within a few minutes!! Just shy of 4 months, she rarely pees even 3x, mostly after a long sleep. I think its a maturity thing.
Mine is passing me off damn bad. It's been 2 damn months and it's Fn horrible.
