This is the long in the making follow-up to my DJI Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro review covering the main parts of the firmware updates which have made both drones much better...but have they done enough? I also cover the new version of Cine/ Tripod mode, which directly resulted from the petition I started in December 2021.

Hi Philip, great video! Mavic 3 pro has been out for a month now and now sharpness or noise controls... Do you have any update from DJI as to when/if we'll ever get it on the Mavic 3 pro?

It's always so refreshing to watch a PB RUclips video. The consummate videographer and producer. Thank goodness you do still upload proper professional videos, so sick of seeing 'shorts' and tiktok videos being advertised. Tiktok is the pinnacle of utter crap...how people's standards and tolerances have dropped to such an appalling and incredible low.

Of all the creative content I've watched on RUclips... yes, all of it (and I've watched probably an unhealthy amount), I find myself entirely mesmerised with the artistic creativity and mind-blowing knowledge you have and share. It's almost like, through your videography skills combined with your style and pace of delivery, you are able to unveil multiple perspectives of our natural surroundings that, for me at least, have become visually hidden in my perceptions of the environment around me. I don't know if it's just me, but I find myself sitting quietly for 5 minutes or so afterwards to allow my mind to process everything I've just watched and heard. So, this time, instead, I thought I'd mention it here.
Grateful for your relentless pursuit of this, Philip. It's astonishing how a company like DJI take so long to listen to someone like you, even with the petition! Come on DJI, sort it out, listen to the man and implement faster!

What a bittersweet bit of news. I’ve been watching this saga unfold since I got a Mini 3 Pro in June of last year and signed the petition (I believe).
So, yay, they’re listening, and adding the ability to fly really slow on the drone I own (but not others?) someday (maybe?) and they’re totally gonna fix that spotlight issue (right???)
Oh, DJI - the amazing company that brings us incredibly intuitive counterintuitive tools that are simple yet frustrating to update with firmware that might make our drones way better or completely unusable.

I used to think the Tripod mode was useless until I educated myself. I found that I really miss it on the Mini 3 Pro, particularly because Cine mode is still very fast when flying low and close.
I purchased the cinesticks from Scotty makes stuff and now I’m able to get better slow shots. Downside is having to carry an extra box and being careful not to lose the parts.
are you switching to n mode then back to cine mode the app defaults to n mode even if the switch is in cine

I love the image on the Mini 3 Pro since the last update. -2/-2 all the way. It just shows that the default settings where creating problems where there where none. I mean the images is very detailed without the added sharpening but it's so much more pleasant. It's also very clean without the noise reduction. It seem the NR was not only removing genuine detail from image but also adding some trance digital noise on top. Now I find that the image quality especially when shooting in 50/60p matches my regular camera so much more. It definitely looks like something that cost a lot more than what we paid for it.
I spent sooooo long explaining the issues to them before and after my initial review because it was a mess. I don’t know if any of that helped but I am shocked they brought it in. I think they are genuinely concerned the average user will freak without lots of sharpness and noise reduction.
@@philipbloom I would understand if they'd freak out by giving an option that makes image worst but easier for editing. Thing is as you well know the image is now incomparably better in every way without doing absolutely anything to it :D The strangest thing is that soon after they added the same thing to Avata and it made putting a GoPro on it completely redundant :D

Really contemplating that Mini 3 Pro. I have the Air 2s and it's great and so is the Classic which I just picked up to replace it. However, the size of the Mini 3 Pro makes it seem like I would actually use it in situations where I wouldn't want to bring the larger ones, and as a result get better stuff. Hmm, decisions...
I picked one up a while back and find myself reaching for it now almost exclusively. The size was the most appealing initially but it’s much better than just its size. BTW… really enjoy your channel. You may have been the reason I bought a danged holographic fan. Lol

I had to do the same thing with them to get offline maps back. 7 months after the promise and a year and a half after I started my monthly campaign it finally came last year.

Also loving the image of the Mini 3 Pro after the late October 2022 update. With sharpening and NR set to -2/-2 the image has way more detail, way less noise, way more shadow information and also looks much smoother. I can also boost the ISO over 400 without the image falling apart entirely, even 1600 look super clean.
The Mavic 3 cannot even compete anymore.
Well it has d-log though which i would love to have on the mini3 pro
@@philipbloom given how clean the shadows are on the Mini 3 Pro with -2/-2 I think the sensor should be capable of capturing enough information.
@@DennisSchmitz they told me it wasn’t up to it, but they also told me 10 bit wasn’t possible and put it in the same week!
If you have to boos iso to 400 you might as well switch to 50/60 fps set iso to auto and adjust the ev compensation until you hit 500 it just above. Then you'll be in the second iso and you can just lock exposure to get cleaner image.
Phillip, I started watching your videos many years ago when I stumbled upon your Letus Extreme DOF adaptor review. Fast forward to now - my Phantom 4 Pro is getting old, and it's time for me to get a new drone. Thanks for all the informative videos over the years, they have been very helpful.

Great video Phil. I was one of the fools, an early adopter of a Mavic 3 to replace my Mavic 2 pro and my pain over the first year was as palpable as your video explains so graphically and surprisingly politely!
I use it with a mini 3 pro commercially and for my own RUclips vids and whilst I totally agree the mini is fantastic, it cannot compete with the Mavic 3 in breezy conditions, range and in anything other than good light. As you mention well, the long lens offers a whole new world of creativity.
The flow of impressive but much needed updates to the big drone have been welcome and you explain the progress really clearly.
But my respect for DJI as a company is at an all time low. The magic 3 is a fabulous drone now 15 months later, but will I ever be an early adopter of the next amazing flying machine.....no.

I have watched almost all of your RUclips content and commented on how beautiful they are, how calming and serene almost melancholy they are… you are indeed a wonderful cinematographer.
The issue that I have, and it is entirely my own, is that there is a disconnect as a result of my lack of understanding of the basics of photography / videography. That is entirely on me. It doesn’t spoil the enjoyment of watching your content… it just saddens me that I don’t have that extra understanding or someone as good as you to teach me.
Nonetheless, I am always so pleased when that notification pops up with your next film… and slavishly I watch along and love the experience with just that tinge of regret that I don’t have the knowledge and therefore experience required to get the most of my Mini 3 Pro.
I therefore remain an avid subscriber and a very great admirer of the style, tone and beauty of your YT content.

Oh really, it’s my lack of knowledge and awareness around ISO versus FPS etc… I think it could be described as a misspent career in which I chased being the best at my work rather than pursuing the things that interested me. All to no avail… or at least not nearly as fulfilling as I had hoped. Retired now, though young to be so, but burned out and tired… I had such big plans but burn out is very real for me and so I just enjoy content such as yours…
@@TiredOfAllOfThis ISO is the sensitivity to light. Don’t know if you’ve ever taken film photos but your bought 100 for bright days, 800 for average to low light and 1600 for low light. The higher the ISO the more film grain you saw. 100 being perfectly clean. It’s the same here with the drones. 100 is where the mini 3 pro is the cleanest, each time you move up to the next one that is a stop of light and the camera is boosting the signal to get there which adds noise, just like film. No you normally want to hide that noise, DJI were doing it with a heavy hand with the mini 3 pro and it totally destroyed the detail, they compensated with this by adding sharpness but all they were sharpening was mush. That’s why it’s best to do it in post production but it that requires knowledge and some skill to get the best results. That’s why I asked for them to do it to give people the option to be in control. The difference is huge if you do it well.
Frame per second just means how many frames (photos essentially) are captured each second. If you capture 60fps then tell your editing software to play it back at 30fps then you have slow motion. When shooting 120fps the drone does that for you so it plays back as slow motion.

Hopefully, shots like your opening one will be possible without having to hold the controller once DJI releases the SDK to companies like DroneLink. I read that the SDK release is imminent

The lack of drone/prop noise in your lav mic is amazing!
It's there. iZotope can work wonders. It has gotten much better over the years but not cheap. Another option is ADR, added dialogue replacement. Tell the talent beforehand, and bring them in in post to re-record dialogue.
Now my only wish is d-log for the tele lens on the Mavic 3. Thanks Philip!
The noise reduction for 4K is easily the biggest problem the drone has. Sadly you won’t get dlog on the top camera. The sensor can’t cope is what I was told.
You finally got your wish, tripod mode on mini 3 and a whole load of other very configurable speeds. 1m/s now

Excellent video... As usual, what a shame that DJI always seems to concentrate on the next release and fails to properly polish the jewels it has already produced. What's even more of a disappointment is the fact that they almost totally ignore the top-notch customer feedback. Arrogance perhaps? Or maybe they are well aware that the tech-junkies who are their main customer base will simply shelve last year's model in favour of forking out another small fortune to be able to flag the fact that they've got the latest and greatest.
Oh they're doing the same thing with remote id as they did tripod mode update. At first it was to be all drones. As per my correspondence with them on that. The air 2 and prior drones aren't really in their plans. They basically said we have until September to see what we will do, but you can buy a module if not. Read between the lines on that statement.
The Mini 3 Pro now has it from yesterday! 1m/s again 👍

What a fabulous video came across this by chance, inspiring and makes me want to learn more, so many generic videos out there and this is so much more in depth. Shame I have do so much of this on a budget and cant yet afford all the kit like lapel mics and extras for the software, will get there but the list of kit is extensive especially when I already have a fortunes worth of kit for my design and photography.
Thank you. Buy a lav mic and record audio on your phone. Lots of editing software have noise reduction filters.

I barely use my 2s anymore because the shots I'd like to get with it are the exact shots that you like it for as well. I want to be able to fly it slower more easily. It's a great drone besides that. I also feel like the footage falls apart pretty easy while grading. It seems to macro block easily.
I'm sure it can be said that these drones are more for cinematography, but I wish they would make the little remote like Skydio has. I have the Mini 3 Pro and want to use it to follow while mountain biking. Aside from that, nice drone.

It's always the same: a technology start to makes leaps in development and you start to think "I can't imagine where we will be in 5 years from now" and everytime 5 years later the products start to decline slowly 😄

It's often said that tech companies "ship their org charts", so the discrepancy in features and updates could be because DJI's internal product teams are segmented by product, and the left hand doesn't speak to the right. Pure conjecture, but perhaps.

I hope you convince dji to remove noise reduction in mavic 3. This should be a semi-professional drone and it's not. We should also have access to sharpness settings as in mavic 2. DJI is doing worse and worse work. Its really sad!! thank you for your contribution in improving dji's work and good luck !!

These issues are why I can't convince myself to get rid of my old Phantom 4 Pro. The usability is just so much better even though it gets little use now that I have the Mini 3 Pro.
Jokingly one might say you're turning into that "crazy cat guy". I also like cats but have never had five at a time. Might be a bit too much competition for my attention. Thanks for your videos. I always look forward to seeing them.

very helpful, I now know I am literally nowhere near understanding how to shoot, edit and colour correct/grade a video. BUT, its is only a hobby for me. Despite that I hope to learn more. Right now I am having a nightmare with the AVATA in dark environments and it has none of the features you speak off, so I may have to try Neat Video

I have always watched your videos from a amateur/hobbiest /cat dad kinda distance..You always spec out the toys I would love to have but other toys equally call my attention. Powerboats or Jagggg's and the wifesky needs hers too. I'm actually going through your videos on a dji mavic 2 pro as I'm getting one next week ( really really good deal) . What is the difference between FilmConvert Nitrate and Cinematch? Both of these do color grading? If so, why would I choose one over other? Appreciate your help in advance.
Nope. Cinematch is not a grading tool. It’s for colour matching and switching camera colour sciences.

I'm too a Mavic air 2 pilot, and to control slow speed with Mavic cine mode I use the software of drone hacks, the free version has the possibility to control all the parameters of the drone, including max speeds
Cool but you shouldn’t need to hack it. Plus you need a computer to adjust the parameters.

I did the same 7x shot as you in Richmond on an (Attenborough narrated) video I did recently (Arcadia Rewilded). Great minds think alike!
In the same boat with mode 4 stick controls for DJI FPV drones... saw numerous posts on the forum asking for it. I would really love to get one from DJI, but I'm so used to the mode 4 setup from games seems unnatural to fly anything else. I've tried all the other modes and can't get used to them.

As an Air2S owner I’m still flabbergasted at how little they are willing to listen. It’s sad but often also been my experience with a lot of Chinese brands and is the only thing that makes me want to look away from buying anything bigger. For example their Inspire 2 is amazing…but at it’s price point and market it should have support like a ARRI if they want to be who they seem to aim to be. Fine control, full API access and highly advanced settings are a minimum expectation along with opening up the drone upon end of life. That would be the aviation standard which DJI seems to not understand is the market they are working in, let alone supporting that these drones should expect to have a five to ten year life span in a professional’s tool kit.

Air 2S owner here - pretty pissed that I'm never getting adjustable tripod. The whole thing is just so stupid. Like who ever asked for cine mode? Find me one person who was using tripod on the Mavic 2 and said "MAKE THIS FASTER". Goddammit.
Oh well, sour grapes aside, absolutely love your videos as always and thank you so much for making an effort and trying to steer DJI in the right direction.
They told me the petition was successful, by not giving it to the air 2s means they lied. It was for all the drones that were stuck with fine mode. How hard would it be to add it to it? I’ve told them how unhappy I am about it.
@@philipbloom it's literally an app update issue. You can adjust the top speed in third party apps with any drone that had SDK released.
@@LiveMyJourneyTom it helps SO much if everyone who wants it emails them, tweets them etc. That’s the only way they might add it. They don’t listen to me.

What camera pack are you using for Mini 3 pro in Nitrate? I don't see a pack/profile to use for mini 3 pro. they said it would be coming soon last year. Neat video question: would it be good to film with "lens cap on" as per your noise testing and then create and save a profile for faster editing in the future?
use the Mavic Air one, closest match I can find. I've never tried neat video like that, it might work although I would shoot a solid a solid colour., perhaps grey and not under expose it. Do it for each ISO.
