  • Have you ever heard of a Cello da Spalla? I shit you not, it is literally a small cello that ex-violinists strap to their body so they can play a cello like a violin!!
Here's a Bach piece that was likely intended for the instrument but is more often played on normal cello -- Cello Suite No 6.
Cello da Spalla is tuned like a normal cello and is roughly 1/10 the size. It often has a 5th string (high E) which is tuned an octave below a violins highest string. Remember, cello and violin are both tuned in 5ths, so they are very similar to play.
Wiki: "it is possible that J. S. Bach, and perhaps other composers, might have intended the cello da Spalla in cases where the "violoncello piccolo" is specified. This term, "violoncello piccolo", features in many of the Bach cantatas, with the parts written in a variety of clefs (bass, tenor, alto and soprano). The variety of clefs has been taken as a representation of the instrument's relatively wide range. The five-string version of the instrument may have been what Bach had in mind for performing his Cello Suite No. 6 (which presents many technical problems on a four-string cello)."
