As an adult beginner (but experienced pianist/flutist) I cannot thank you enough for your channel, playing demonstrations and tips. You are my number 1 destination for everything cello related, including your brilliant 2 octave scales, bow tips, posture tutorials and a long list of other hands-on tutorials which are a perfect balance between instruction and actual playing demonstration. There are other beginner and intermediate cello channels but yours is hands down the best. Your FREE videos are amazingly generous and incredibly useful. Again, my grateful thanks! Oh, and your playing is so musical and absorbing.
Well done, dear Ilia. What I think is the greatest benefit for starting playing cello as a child, is that you automaticly get to know the great repertoire. As an adult light intermediate, this is becoming the next hurdle for me.
Thank you very much introducing ultimate fine pieces! Your great sense of humor certainly exudes your integrity. Your confidence and charisma naturally follows with it. love it! I'm very sorry to hear about your uncle. RIP.
Really enjoyed your list Ilia...thank you for this, and your superb playing. As a cellist I grew up assuming that Max Bruch was Jewish until I learnt in later years that 'The success of Kol Nidrei led to an assumption by many that Bruch was of Jewish ancestry, although Bruch denied this and there is no evidence that he was Jewish. As far as can be ascertained, none of his ancestors were Jews. Bruch was given the middle name Christian, and was raised Protestant.' I'm sure you knew this but it may be of interest to others. Thanks again. Bravo...
I LOVED your list! Please, do a list of orchestral cello solos next time (i.e. Brahms piano concerto nº 2, mov 2, Enigma variations, William Tell ouverture, etc). It'd be so interesting coming from you. BTW, another allegedly "student" concerto that I love is Kabalevsky's nº1 in G minor. I often think of it as the "Russian Saint Saëns concerto".
Agree with all your choices. Bach Suites 5 and 6 should always be played in that order when playing both in the same program. Thanks for your tutorials and very astute observations. Carry on!
I love all your top 20 pieces Ilia and they are my favourites too but in a different order. It might be because I am British my No.1 is the Elgar Cello Concerto. You played all beautifully.🎉👏👏👏
When I heard the introduction to number 7, even before the mention of WWI, just the "believe it or not I haven't played this and it's really famous" I was like ELGAR. which I'm learning right now and I love. and when I heard the intro to number 3 I was like "KODALY!" which I just learned + I love
Loved your list and agree that these are some of the best works for cello out there. I was surprised there was something on the list I wasn't familiar with! Started playing cello in 1995 and have continued since but I am not familiar with Fratres or any of their works! I'll have to check that out. If I could add to your list, I would say Élégie by Fauré. For me this is a piece that expresses an emotion of deep sorrow and pain that I just cannot verbalize but I think every single person has felt.
Thank you for the beautiful post! It was so interesting to see another musicians favorite list. You were right when you said it means something to you but not to anyone else 😂 we all have our own favorites. My favorites were the Bach preludes - beautiful 🤍❤ and expressive 🥰
Fantastic choice and playing, number 18 I had not heard, and Rachmaniov's Vocalise is a fav of mine (condolences BTW, such a young age for your uncle to pass way). A wonderful sonata is Poulenc's Sonata for Cello and Piano, FP 143 - II. Cavatine. Unbearably touching composition!!!
Thank you! Happy you liked it! Believe it or not, but for this video I used a Røde Videomic Pro Plus (which is the really instrument-friendly). Nowadays I use a Zoom H6 Recorder and just bought a Shure SM7B, looking forward to use that legendary microphone! Camera is Sony A7 IV.
I know a "top list" has to exclude things, but that you pass on Schummann concerto...? The 2nd movement theme is indeed one og the most beautiful cello solos of all times :D And... Nice thumb trick in Beethoven sonata !
Exactly. However, the final bars of the fourth movement are typically exciting in only that way Brahms can finish his masterpieces. I am reviewing your lessons and hope you will consider my thoughts on bowing, etc. Thanks for the tutorials.
short question, perhaps not the right place here. How important is it to play always the same bowing in a piece, me I cannot remember the bowings at all and if I follow the bowings of my teacher correctly I do not make music, I play like a robot (Cello Suites). I play most pieces freely and never have problems and have enough space on my bow, but always play different bowings for one piece of music.
It is not at all insignificant. The mechanics of the bow makes the character of an up bow different than that of the down bow. Rarely are there cases where it MUST be one over the other, but you should be aware of and make account for the different characteristics in your interpretation of a piece. And if your interpretation changes at every performances I would take it as a challenge to learn a bowing and stick to it.
@@IliaLaporevcellist you are welcome. I personally love it more than Elegy by Faure, which is anyway beatiful as well :) I also need to start working on Rochmaninov's Elegy, have the scores, but no time :)
Breath voices are not a part of the composition, therefore are not included in the scores. Not a sort of Improvisation as well. They’re just voices and recording artifacts derived from the artist’s body, just like gut voices, coughing or sneezing voices .@@strawberryjamyes300

Hi 5, fellow Pianist turned Flautist then turned Cellist! :) Yes, totally, IIia's channel is great! Fun yet serious.
Fellow flautist and pianist that is a beginner cellist now! I thought I was the only one
Well done, dear Ilia. What I think is the greatest benefit for starting playing cello as a child, is that you automaticly get to know the great repertoire. As an adult light intermediate, this is becoming the next hurdle for me.
When I first heard jaquline du pre play on a classical music radio station I was like I want to play cello and haven't quite it since high school
Bach No. 6 brought me overjoy in tears Everytime.
Same here! We share the same feelings!
Bach is a miracle, and some of his works, like the suite No. 6, are a miracle within a miracle.
@dionbaillargeon4899 Absolutely true!

Thank you! Absolutely! You already shot one of my upcoming videos! Telepatia 😂 I am working right now on that topic of orchestra cello solos!
This has been useful for me as a cello student . I can watch his tecnique and learn something.

Thank you so much! Glad you loved it! I wished I could have played the Elgar before! I feel like a outsider by not having played that masterwork!🤦🏻♂️
Linda seleção! Amei o vídeo! Parabéns! ❤
Always a pleasure to hear you play! Great list.

I love to see some of my personal favorites, like Kodaly and Bach's 5th, as well as a few concertos!
Thank you for the beautiful post! It was so interesting to see another musicians favorite list. You were right when you said it means something to you but not to anyone else 😂 we all have our own favorites. My favorites were the Bach preludes - beautiful 🤍❤ and expressive 🥰
Thank you for taking the time to stop by! It’s always interesting indeed to see what other people like and dislike! Ah…Bach…immortal! 🙏🏻
#20 es la razón por la que amo la música del cello 👏👏👏
Such beautiful interpretations ❤
Thank you, hope you enjoyed it!

Very good list and good playing from you! Only one missing in my modest opinion is R. Schumann, thnx
A brilliant top 20. It cannot be better 😊
Thanks! I am happy you enjoyed! 😃
For me, dvorak concerto is the must, but suite 6 is the best cello solo. I like ur sound.
Ligeti's Sonata should be at the top next to Kodaly for me :) Missing it in this list.
Yes!!! However, I did not put it in the list because I have never played it and couldn’t just sight read and destroy your ears 😂

Your uncle was a marvelous cellist.
He was. He would be so happy to read your comment!
I had no idea the Brahms1 3rd mvt was an homage to Bach!!
I love Elgar cello concerto it's my favorite sad pice my favorite cellist was a master of it jaquline du pre
My favourite cello solo is ligeti's cello sonata
Ah yes! Ligeti is really awesome!…And difficult!
Wonderful performing! Well done!
Thank you!
I love this 🥰❤️
Great!🙂🙂
Superb selection !!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿😘🌷
Thanks!
Your Glazunov was perfectly in tune with my toothbrush.
Sometimes life is amazing.
Thank you for your beautiful music!
I would want to play one of these, but I can't really find the sheets for it since most of these are shortened.
That was fun, great selection, I think Bach must have had a magic wand or something, his melodies are just too good. 😀
Wonderful! Ilia, i dont know if its your breathing or what but your mic sure is picking it up.
Hello! love all of the solos, fratres is amazing.
What configuration do u use for the recording?
So nicely performed 👍
Excelente Professor
Obrigado!
im a middle school 1st grader in korea, I do lalo concerto did saint, hayden c major. Am i good at it? i learned for 3 years
I love the lalo; it is so good!
Lalo is like a boss! However, soooo underrated!
good to see bach 5 and 6 in first!
Bach is the master of the masters!
Very good list. I would consider Paganini Moses Variations
Nice one! Love that piece. Have great memories with that piece!
Hello nice video, in my top 20 i have Benjamin Britten cello suite no 1 op 72. Regards
The Suites are wonderful! Unfortunately copyrights won’t allow me to upload it! Best regards!

And... Nice thumb trick in Beethoven sonata !
Please consider Brahms E minor sonata. Also consider Bach C major suite. Otherwise, great choices. Thanks for an excellent presentation.
Thank you! Brahms E Minor Sonata is actually there :) around 2:45! But I played a bit of the 3rd mouvement.
So you did. Apologies.
No problem! I imagine you wanted to hear the beginning of the sonata, with the deep long phrase!
Exactly. However, the final bars of the fourth movement are typically exciting in only that way Brahms can finish his masterpieces. I am reviewing your lessons and hope you will consider my thoughts on bowing, etc. Thanks for the tutorials.
i loved this video.
Thanks!
❤ 😊
Just an idea, use timestamps so we can easily navigate the pieces :)
Thank you so much for the idea! Makes so much sense, will add the timestamps as soon I have access to my computer :D
Theo best❤
I can't believe no Faure Elegie!
You got me there!
How do composers indicate which notes have to be vibrated and which don’t?
That’s a great question
Some composers will write "vib." or "sans vib." but it's typically just up to interpretation
@@amandapr1me It was a joke. A piece like “Swan” does not have any “sans vib.” indications on any notes.

Well not many cello solos, solos. But cool pieces really.
Nice playing! I wonder, though, why you did not mention Elegy by Rochmaninov. Absolutely lovely piece :)
Thanks! Believe it or not, I never played that piece, but it is stunning! Thanks for mentioning that lovely music!
@@IliaLaporevcellist you are welcome. I personally love it more than Elegy by Faure, which is anyway beatiful as well :) I also need to start working on Rochmaninov's Elegy, have the scores, but no time :)
I didn't see a song list.
If you keep watching, you’ll see one by one the pieces I am mentioning and playing ;)
Não gosto de nada lento no violoncelo...ansiedade talvez!
Kkkk!
Are you serious? You never played Elgar???
Who told you that you’re a good cellist?
If only you could filter your breath voices.. we would hear only your masterful performances.
I didn't notice
Absolutely. Its really annoying and killing the beauty of music
I think more of it as a part of the music. I just feel more engaged in the pice and the cellist ig i hear the breathing.

What about fingers slapping on the fingerboard?? Do they also reduce the musical effect of the composition?
mute the breathing while playing. incredibly distracting
Agreed!
As a musician, if you cut it out is like having a patient with no pulse as a doctor. Its completely lifeless
