I made the Orange Peel Quilt for my daughter's 40th birthday. I made it scrappy. It is such a happy quilt and she loves it! Thank you, Jenny, for your helpful tutorial!
I LOVE this quilt. It is beautiful. I've got my LARGE orange peel template and I can confirm that it's really large! Hope I can get a quilt like this one made sometime. So many quilts planned and so little time!
I love the orange peel quilt! Although I totally love learning new techniques from all of Jenny's videos. I think the orange peel design is so pretty and Jenny's tips make it virtually fool proof.
oh my gosh > that looks like. fun! will gather supplies slowly for this while I play with the Hexagon! that was a great way to adhere the Orange peel down !😁
I Love this quilt. My grand mother made one for me when I was a little girl. This will be my first attempt at making a quilt. I will have to hurry if I want my mother to teach me to hand quilt. She is 92 years old.
I really enjoy watching Jenny. I always learn something and usually get a good laugh or two. Can't wait to try this quilt with my new large template that I just bought.
I love this quilt. Though it took a while to do, with the peels in blues and the background in white, it made a lovely quilt that is now being loved by a close friend. Loved it.
I really like this quilt! And I'm so glad I ordered that large orange peel template. It should be delivered TODAY! I also have the orange peel for charm packs and I love it. I sometimes take a break from other sewing to use it for something fun.
+Mary Ellen Brennan We're so glad you're loving the small orange peel template and can't wait to see what you make with the large one!! :) Happy quilting!
I love this quilt pattern. I already bought your template, Horizon fabric, and am ready to make this before our cruise this summer. Thanks for making quilting intricate patterns so easy for us novices.
Lovely quilt! Thank you very much for another great tutorial. The pieces that are left over after cutting the peel are large enough to make a pretty border. If my math is correct, you could get either 2.5 inch squares or 5.5 inch triangles (if you're not afraid of bias edges) out of them. Every time Jenny nonchalantly drops bits of fabrics to the floor, I want to shout "Give them to me! Give them to me!"
Another great tutorial, Jenny, thanks! To make the quilt a bit less stiff, after you flip the orange peel shape+interfacing right-sides-out, take some time to trim the interfacing back to about 3/4" from the edge. This is called "windowing" for applique. Even with featherweight fusible, it can make the quilt too stiff. And if you're worried about layered bulk, after you stitch the applique shape to the background square, in the back you could always CAREFULLY pull the background from the shape and trim away the excess background fabric... so you only end up with multiple layers of fabric on your quilt top at the seam lines (typical of most pieced quilt tops). I think I'll just have to try this one! ~Diana (Toronto)
I love this quilt because it has an uncluttered look. I am going to make my grandson and his fiance a quilt for there wedding this would be perfect for that.
Just finished piecing the top of this quilt. I used Japanese print for the orange peel on black background. Now I'm looking for the perfect boarder. It is simple, a tad labor intensive but worth all the steps.
nice quilt I made the smaller one in bright colorsWhen I did the smaller one I put mine on a 12 inch square instead of using the 5 inch just lined them ironed then down then used the small blanket stitch turned out real nice
oh it's bad..i tried this but am a beginner. I couldn't get the interfacing so I improvised. my peel was so wonky cut by hand. I will keep trying..you teach well. thanks
Thank you Jenny for another great video tutorial! 👍 I can't wait to get this new template!!! How was your Thanksgiving holiday? Bless you and everyone at MSQC. 😊
When cutting the template on yardage or fat quarters do you have to cut it on the diagional or bias i guess you call it or can it be striaght to maximize the fabric?
Going to make an 'Orange peel quilt' for my daughter. I was thinking of cutting yardage 10X10in and applique 4 orange peels to it or would you recommend 5x5in squares with one each. What would you suggest Jenny?
+Maria C It's totally up to you! You'll have plenty of space either way, but if you applique to a 10x10, your negative will be slightly greater, without those inside seams. :) Hope that helps! Good luck!
You'll have a little more waste, but if you haven't worked with (or aren't too comfortable using) fusible interfacing, here's a tip! Cut out the squares of interfacing just like the fabric, 10" each. Cut a slit in each one on the diagonal (to fit the peel). Cut out the fabric peel and place on the interfacing with bumpy side of interfacing against the right side of the fabric. Sew 1/4" seam around the fabric Use the peel template and trim the excess interfacing Note: The interfacing I have is 18" wide. If you place the peels vertically and close together, you should be able to get 3 cut across a width of the interfacing. The peels are a bit under 14" in length. If you're making the quilt with 42 blocks (I'm not sure if Jenny's is 36 or 42 but we'll go with the larger), 42 peels divided by 3 (per row) = 14 "rows" of interfacing. 14 rows x 14" = 196" divided by 36" (yard) = 5.4. I'd purchase at least 6 yards of interfacing. Hope this helps anyone who hasn't used interfacing before.
+Missouri Star Quilt Company. Thanks like this technique perfect for my leftovers. I saw too that there is one call 3d bowtie, I guess it could be done with charm packs!
+Mary Mayshack you can go to MSQC and shop..they have a template there and I understand they have the one that is perfect for the 5" charm size, too. :)

Hi, bunnygirl! The interfacing on this project also acts as a glue when you iron it on. The stitching makes sure it stays down. If you used regular fabric instead, the stitching around the edges would be vital to holding the fabric orange peel down to the square behind it. Hope this helps!
I do not understand the process of you placing pieces in place and then moving to the ironing station when it would be more convenient to go to the pressing station first and place the pieces in place on the surface you will be pressing them together on
Oh my gosh, pre-cutting the slit is genius!!

+Erin P as of right now, we do not have a tutorial on a quillow..stay tuned because it is possibly going to be on our Mansewing channel! :)
Could you put the orange peel on a half square triangle? If so what size square would it have to be?
When cutting the template on yardage or fat quarters do you have to cut it on the diagional or bias i guess you call it or can it be striaght to maximize the fabric?
+Sydney Doe You can do it however you like with applique, just make sure you don't tug or pull on your fabric :)
+Missouri Star Quilt Company Is Pellon Shape Flex too heavy of an interfacing to use ?
+Penny Bunty THank you

Which blue is the border? I love the Kona pool party pack and I want to buy the yardage for the border,

Thanks for the fantastic tip Darlene!
Is there a way to make this quilt as you go without using inter-block sashing?
have you ever made a video on bow tie block?
