Just replaced my fan/resistor assembly for the same boiling in the overflow reservoir issue. Not a fan (no pun intended) of having to remove the frontend of the car to get to the assembly, but it is what it is. My biggest issue was 'burping' the cooling system to get the air out - amazing how many air bleeds this car has; great design Mini/BMW.....

front end comes off quickly though on older models like the one in the video.

It does seem however that mini does not let that low speed fan come on until 220F which seems high. Also it looks like the high fan comes on around 230F

Yes that is unusually high compared to other cars but normal for mini.

Even though the low speed was not working how did that allow the car to overheat as surely the highspeed fan will have still stopped the car overheating?

Did you watch the whole video? Initial problem was coolant loss, which we fixed before this video. That was the overheating. Then the "overheating" was just the car warming up more than I expected till the high speed came on.

Thank you very much for this outstanding instructional tutorial. I came as part of research for the exact same problem on my daughters car, I stayed because I learned so much, such as the thought process when troubleshooting the wiring schematic and the Gestalt of it all coming together in the final repair
The budget Autel that I use ( ap200 ) does not have the live activation option. Could you tell me your model please and if you are happy with it.
    Many thanks.
    Ps: Liked and subscribed.

09 Mini S ~ is it necessary to take off the whole front end to change out the resistor?

Not sure, I cant have every car memorized. Someone else might chime in. . Definitely necessary to remove the fan shroud.

Your daughter out to proud to have you as her mechanic and dad. Do you know why the vast majority of scanners would not erase codes while engine is running???
EDIAG Car OBD2 Scanner YA-101 Car Code Reader very cheap and it can erase code while engine is on.

It's the car not to scan tool. I don't know why they make cars that way some of them are and some of them aren't
