Today Sunday Feb. 10,2013 attended My Wife,s Father Anniversary Mass in Boolavogue, Co. Wexford. and they played this beautiful Irish Rebel Song during the Communion. A story about a real piece of history.
omg! thanks for this! i remember my father watching this concert with me, tears in his eyes. he said he could tell by the way Anthony was singing that he meant every word...then we found out that Anthony is indeed from Wexford so this song would be dear to his heart. love it love it love it. TY!
Only a true Irishman could sing this with such feeling and respect. I can truly feel this song as Anthony sings it with great conviction. He makes this song real to me. He is a wonderful tenor!
I'm not Irish but just a poor mutt. But Anthony is a Wexfordian and does this piece and his country so well. As a child and still now as an adult I belong to an Irish Catholic parish called St Malachy. NI saint I fear, before there was a NI. And we learned Irish songs in school. Just not this one. Wish I had.
Thank you Phyllis. I was told I am French/German. It really doesn't matter. But I also am a Catholic, yet maybe can't call myself as devout as other Catholics. I love my faith and what it teaches me, and the centuries it has taught me. I've never had to fight for the right to practice my citizenship or faith. Don't know if I have that stuff. But yes, I do love this music.
If you ever get to meet this wonderful singer and great person, ask him about his cat. Then say you would like to join him for a cold one in Devenney's in Clermont Florida sometime just to see his reaction. What a guy! What a voice!
Brilliant version of Boolavogue..........Anthony "lives" the song as he is a Wexford man. He captures all the belief and the emotion and he is an excellent tenor. Beir bua.
Tell him his voice is comforting me through trying times and is making me feel a lot better. I've been in love with a beautiful Irish boy (Irish American) and I am terrified he doesn't love me back. I told him on May 22 through email how I felt, but it's June 3rd and I still haven't checked back to see if and what he replied, because I'm too scared. The boy I love has pretty, thick brown hair, beautiful big blue eyes, tall, goofy, and elegant all at the same time, a big friendly smile, a gorgeous singing voice, and most of all, laughter in his heart, a twinkle in his eye, a good soul, and has a lot of love and emotion, especially for his mother. An Irish man if I've ever seen one, regardless of where he was born! I've always been deeply into Irish everything (I have some Irish myself) but falling in love with this boy- man- has made me fall in love with it even more, because I can see where he gets his beautiful loving soul from! I also lost my mom a couple years ago and listening to Anthony and the Tenors on VHS always comforted me, as she and her (late) mother were Irish American. It would mean a lot to me if you would both say a prayer for me that my friend would love me back, and to thank Anthony for the music that soothes my soul!
I wish I could talk to you...we have much in common. I first heard this music when I was sick and this kind of music helped me through my life. Also...my first crush was a gorgeous Irish boy. Not sure he knew I existed lol but I still think of him sometimes.
I saw Anthony in a solo concert in a church the other night, and although he did not sing this song that night, he was MAGNIFICIENT!!!!! Can't wait until the next one-----
I am an American and love Anthony Kearns amazing lyric tenor voice. It is that of an angel! Love Liam Clancy but Kearns is truly amazing! He is an Irish Caruso or Pavarotti! Sing my Irish bretheren! Sing! You're doing the Lord's work!
In the 1970s I had a cassette (8-track) with a series of these songs, with the first version of this I'd ever heard, with Seamus Heaney's poem read in it.
The cassette which you are referring to is called Four Green Fields, by The Flying Column, the poem is Requiem For The Croppies, the album was recorded in 1971. I have it too.
A difficult question to answer or even try to answer without annoying someone. My simple attempt to answer the question is this: You can fight for freedom but fight your enemy only, do not injure or kill your own people in doing so. If you are indiscriminate in your fight (for example plant bombs in public places) then you are a terrorist; you have frightened people, maybe killed people.
+mgbushido High minded thinking ( Crowns, Governments, ,Lords and their ilk) causes man to stand up simply for what is right . The eejits never learn .
And we thought in the west that we had freed the country; Davitt and Land League did loads too, A century ago, our freedom fighters went out and beat invaders too (black and tans). And so happy to think all the way back to the "boys of wexford" Should be our proudest county
Both England and Irish Patriots are in the same place against those who are determined to destroy their religion, freedom, and history. This is a fight song, very relevant to what is happening and has been been going on for the last 5 years. Their culture and history is at stake and is worth fighting for. As an American it is also part of my history as well. We will not be replaced or surplanted by an incoming foe looking to only destroy and make void everything that we hold dear. We must all stand & fight together for one another!. WWG1WGA!
Beautiful. The same tune as ''Moreton Bay", s ballad beloved by Australians about an Irish convict. I live on Moreton Bay and have sung the Oz version many times. Not as well as this, of course.
I always smile now when I hear this song. There's a new cute little Prince George in England. The advice here is for his Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great GrandFather. There's even been 3 Georges since the gentleman who's hirelings committed the atrocity at Vinegar hill. An atrocity so bad the English commander in Ireland at the time resigned in disgust of his own men. So yes, the history is VERY LONG and sore, 800 years will take a while to get over. Ireland and England are in a better place today and we celebrate; But just to show how "new" that is just this year 2014 the FIRST state visit by an Irish head of state EVER (in recorded history) to England. In part Ireland's only had a recognized head of separate "head of state" since 1949!! (yup only 730 odd years to go). So when folks want the Irish to "get over it", remember we have very little "other history" to replace it with. Having our asses kicked IS what we are used to
Ireland, next to Haiti, has had one of the toughest fights for freedom as a nation that has included even her own lands rebelling as in the Great Potato Famine. What terrible times, and the Troubles is so devastating. And then the 60's and 70's with Northern Ireland. May she always live in peace and prosperity. And I do love Haiti. Been to both Haiti (7 times) and Ireland, sadly only once, and would go back in a blink, but the poor old feet and legs just aren't what they used to be. And Anthony Kearns, he's great, just great. Let us never forget our history.
I do like Kearns version better because of it's underlying tension in the beat of the drums and the way he sings proud. Contrasting it with Bowyers rendition, although good, it is in more of a waltz tempo which for me takes away from the tension and dispair of the encounter. Both are good though.
@Wally773MTG You may not lick it, but you can just chalk that up to your bad taste. It is magnificent. Even if it isn't as you think it should be. Sounds like he is singing it in a rather somber tone to me. Good day and God bless.

The finest Irish tenor of our time.
great singer and good looking too

I am an Irish then, because I only listen to Anthony lately. His voice is magnificent, a gift from God to inspire his friends and fans.

Wow. Beautiful voice
Ahhhh beautiful
Love Anthony Kearns. He is amazing. I was lucky enough to see him, Ronan, and John as Irish Tenors in Cleveland Ohio. Awesome
What a wonderful singer and great song
Now there's tenors and * tenors*
He is pretty much perfect at any song he sings. You know you will not be disappointed.
We should take notice now of how fragile Ireland's freedom is. This is the time that we MUST fight for Ireland's freedom again!
Kearns has the best version by far.
You should listen a old Irish Ballad Group called The Flying Coloum
A wonderful singer, singing a beautiful Irish song. Thank you from Sydney Australia.
God Bless Father Murphy
💚

Thank you Mr Kearns for sharing your tremendous gift.
Amazing second to none.
Brilliant version of Boolavogue..........Anthony "lives" the song as he is a Wexford man. He captures all the belief and the emotion and he is an excellent tenor.

Yes I Agree our history of our country is well sung
Oh my gosh, gorgeous. And so sad but they are proud of their heros.
I'm proud to say I know this man singing and prouder still to have heard him all through his career. This is how its done!

It was an 8 track, if you can believe it.

This is just a perfect performance.
How does a person fighting on their own land in their own country against an invader be called a terrorist?
I like you.

Hey I am a Protestant and married a Catholic and I stand with them but against them, there are no defining lines ha ha. This song is Awsome :P
WOW! ❤
I also love Kearn's she moved through the fair
Beautiful. The same tune as ''Moreton Bay", s ballad beloved by Australians about an Irish convict. I live on Moreton Bay and have sung the Oz version many times. Not as well as this, of course.
I enjoy Morton bay too, both are quite sorrowful and uplifting at the same time.
Both come from the same ancient air from my home town of Youghal.

And grant such mercy to those who refuse state medication !

This is fucking fantastic. Absolutely stunning. I love it. LOOOOVE IT! I've seen Anthony twice. He's amazing

This song is a true story- it is about a relative of Anthony's.
