- Ronan Tynan singing The Green Fields of France. Written By Eric Bogle. in concert in Ellis Island.
Well, how do you do, young Willie McBride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
And rest for awhile neath the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you our only 19
When you joined the great fallen in 1916,
I hope you died well and I hope you died clean
Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some fateful heart is your memory enshrined?
And, though you died back in 1916,
in that fatal heart are you forever 19?
Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed in forever behind a glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipe lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
The sun now it shines on the green fields of France;
there's warm summers breeze, it makes red poppies dance.
And look how the sun comes from under the clouds;
there's No gas no barbed wire, no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard it's still No Man's Land
the countless white crosses lie mute in the sand
to man's blind indifference to his fellow man.
To a whole generation who were butchered and damned.
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
Young Willie McBride, I can't help wonder why,
Do all those who lie here why they died?
Did you really believe when they told you "The Cause?"
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
Well the sorrow, the suffering the glory, the pain
The killing, and dying, was all done in vain,
For Willie McBride, it all happened again,
again, and again, and again, and again.
Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the 'death march' as they lowered you down?
Did band play The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?
I absolutely love Ronan Tyan's beautiful Irish tenor voice. It is so very touching with so much feeling. Very touching story of young Willie McBride especially as we celebrate and salute our veterans this weekend.
Beautifully sung , with great feeling,Ronan! Love your voice! Thank you!
WOW!! Best version ever. Many many thousands of young Irishmen killed in the first day of The Somme, 1st July 1916. No border in those days , Catholics and Protestants died together, for what? Regards from Northern Ireland.
What a magnificent voice!! and a beautiful song!! It brings tears to my eyes to think of all the young men and women who die in these aweful wars. God Bless them all and may they RIP.
Miss the Irish tenors so much. Thank you for replaying this. Such a very wonderful voice and such a touching song.
Such a fitting song for Memorial Day. Rest In Peace , all those that gave their lives while wearing the uniform of their country.
Beautiful just so Beautiful
Beautiful song, music, and voice.
Ronan Tynan sings this beautiful song with feeling and sincerity. You feel as though he is actually sitting there next to young Willie's grave. The orchrastra music gives the feel of the somber but more peaceful times there in the green fields of france, as depectied in the songs lyrics. This is the best version of this song I have ever heard.
THOROUGHLY HEART CONNECTED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR RADIANCE, DR. RONAN TYNAN.
Simply, it doesn’t get better…💞
JUST ONE AMAZING SONG AFTER ANOTHER, WHAT A VOICE, GOD HAS BLESS HIM AND US BECAUSE OF HIS SHARING WITH US, GOD BLESS YOU RYNAN AND THANKS.

Beautiful
a wonderful man and a wonderful singer
I had a great pleasure to see the Irish Tenors in concert this was one of the song perform. It always brings a tear or two to my eyes.
roger masterson
simply a brilliant song and singer.
Beautiful song, reckless American congress should learn something from this great song....Thank you Ireland... Thanks for uploading the song
Love the song, the message, Sang here with real passion.
So sadly beautiful....too many stories like this.
Thanks again machree01 for this beautiful video, and that of Anthony Kearns singing "Grace"...both songs are touching beyond words. Appreciate your contributions for the pleasure of the rest of us.
@tubefortom Tynan is an M.D. as well as a great tenor.; he is also a lower extremity, double amputee. So he knows a little about suffering. He still practices medicine as well in the little town where he lives in Ireland. He's a very beloved figure in his little town & in Ireland as a whole.
Awesome song. Awesome voice. Awesome MAN!
I think this version is the best I have heard of this song. Ronans' voice and the Orchestra adaptation are outstanding. He is truly a remarkable singer.
Thank you for posting this video of the concert. I have tried to find this song sung by Ronan on CD but have not been successful.
Irish Tenors Ellis Island is the name of the CD where you'd hear this song.
would just like to thank machree01 for all the great stuff. Like them best of all.
This is the best anti-war song ever written. Don't know why we don't hear it more often.
great win in Killarney yesterday
Tearful but joyful
Awesome!!
When they come, I wull staun ma groon...Angel Fire Memorial
epic.
amazing performance.
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
If man kind only learned from the past. We all have lost friends and loved ones to war. I know I have lost many comrads and friends over my life. R.I.P

Very much better than on the Irish Tenors. version; sings with more freedom, slows down, tones his voice down, making the climax so much more effective.
Wonderful song. Will they ever learn? Ronan Tynan sings with sincerity but if you want to hear the definitive version listen to Benjamin Luxon.
my ears too bad to hear most of the words, but it sounds like a great song
@tubefortom
How about Eric Bogle?
Apologies to all.
As I said, I know nothing of Mr. Tynan. There just seemed to be a great disconnect between the intent of the song and the way it is performed here.
So, again, I humbly apologize to all whom I may have offended. It all goes back to "If you can't say something nice about someone, then don't say anything at all"
Lesson learned.
Did you know that Ronan is a double leg amputee by choice because of a juvenile crippling leg malady and that he is also an MD specializing in sports medicine. With these credentials besides being a fine tenor I think that one could look past the ears.
I read his book,amazing man.
He was also a talented equestrian competitor if I'm not mistaken?
doniedaff - yes he was /is
I love the ears!! Often what sets one apart from their contemporaries is their greatest strength.
Niveus, open the window, the gas is getting to you. The gentleman is singing a nice song, comment on that.
Amazing performance of a powerful song. However, I must admit, I like the version by The High Kings more.
shouled read "IN SOME FAITHFUL HEART...IN THAT FAITHFUL HEART" IN THAT 2ND VERSE. under"more info" pulldown under the author is full words.
Stand by, your glasses steady, and drink to your comrade's eyes. Here's a toast to the dead already, and hurrah for the next to die
greatest anti war song along with the German version (Es ist an der Zeit) and the Welsh version (Gwaed ar eu dwylo)
DAN MCNALLY YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF HIGHLIGHTING SOMETHING SO TRIVIAL AS TO MENTION HIS EARS YOU SAD MAN!!!!!
dawn maria esp since ronan has no legs but the biggest heart & voice of an angel
7
its FATEFUL heart not fatal
Instead of the lyrics of the song, this is more interesting. It is a link to an article about Willie McBride, who was he, did he exist or is he just a name in this song? Here is the link: www.independent.ie/life/world-war-1/so-just-who-was-the-young-willie-mcbride-30249256.html
very nice however try the greenfields of france by drop kick murphy
@pedrocubano133
I guess the Jews still have some pull in NY.
OUR MIDDLE SON WAS BORN WITH EARS THAT STUCK OUT LIKE RONAN'S.WHEN HE WAS SEVEN WE HAD THEM FIXED WITH PLASTIC SURGERY AT HIS REQUEST.BEST THING WE EVER DID.HE GOT NO MORE KIDDING,HIS WHOLE ATTITUDE CHANGED,TOO BAD RONAN'S FOLKS DIDN'T DO THE SAME.
You are a superficial fool
The hell does this have to do with his singing?!
Ummmm????? Pretty sure Ronan Tynan had parents that cared more about raising a quality man with integrity than a couple of ears that he uses to listen to people in his profession and music......not really sure how you can listen to him sing and think "ears" instead of 'Wow, what a talented, awesome, man!'
First. Ronan Tynan has an amazing voice.
Second. He should not sing this song! That's right. Even though he has all the notes and a great orchestra behind him, he does not convince me for one second that he could have ever experienced that which he is singing about. Please note, I know nothing of him personally. It's just that the "performance" while beautifully sung, has not one iota of sincerity of the intent of the lyrics.
Liam Clancy or Davey Arthur will convince you.
