It's one of the most emotional versions of this song I've ever heard ...
now, 4 years later I rediscovered Tommy Fleming's repertoire again... and made a playlist to replay it on and on.... what a voice... what a delicate singer. Yes, he really is THE VOICE OF IRELAND. He represents everything IRELAND stands for !! All the dignity of the Irish is captured in the beautiful lines of this wonderful song....
My darling Colleen and I traveled from Virginia to see Tommy in Dublin two years ago. When I reflect on that enchanted evening I always think of this heartbreaking song and how almost everyone sitting near us was singing along with every word. I willl never forget the old man just to our right who was looking down at his folded hands with tears running down his cheeks. The memory always brings tears to my eyes, but they are quickly replaced by a smile as I remember the magic of those few minutes. Perhaps the greatest anti-war song ever written, performed by the brightest jewel in the crown of Irish traditional music.
This is the year of the 1916 centenary. Proud to be an Irish man. God bless. An appropriate and moving song and as Tommy said its a homage to one's country.
sung with such tender dignity, we can not imagine the suffering they were all the flowers of their youth, war is such a terrible thing and those who give their all are part of a lost genertion of their time. and still we go on!!!!!!show us the way Lord

FYI This song was written by Eric Bogle. His original version is excellent as are many of his other songs. June Tabor also does an excellent version. The really bad thing abour war is that at the end only the horrible number of the dead is known and there is no way to tell how many lived because of the war.
Did you know the Canadians , in Pashendeale ??? Did you know them , in Vimey Ridge ??? Did you know them as they got butchered marching into Holland ?? We know you & we Honour you ... Do you know us Now ????

Good that some Southern Irish remember how their forefathers gave their lives. The audience participation prove. And they did it again in the 2nd World War,Think about that. Think of the Concentration Camps. Think it about That Dev, Yuck.
Ah shure Willie, you died for the wrong country and the wrong cause! I doubt the Brits played the last post and chorus for any Irishman who they used as cannon fodder!

One of my favorite folk songs and this is the best version so far, no doubt about it. Tommy Flemming truly are an artist of class.
