  • Father John Murphy was the parish priest in Boolavogue, a small town in County Wexford in Ireland, who led his parishioners in battle during the 1798 uprising. For his participation, Father Murphy was tortured, flogged, decapitated, burned, and ultimately, had his head put on a stake to warn his countrymen against further rebellion. The song "Boolavogue" was written in his honour in 1898 a hundred years after the rebellion.

Totally agree, one of the best voices ever! Power and control, and perfectly in tune.

Amazing performance from Jim - and one of my absolute favourites from his time with the Dubs (see also Spancil Hill, Four Green Fields, Roisin the Bow, Down by the Glenside, etc)

How has Fr Murphy not been canonized?

He was not martyred in the cause of the Catholic Church, but that of Ireland's freedom from English tyranny. The 1798 uprising was not a religious one; it was inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution/ In fact, its leaders were mostly freethinkers and Protestants.

@@bernarddavis1050 It would be controversial due to the barn burning incident.

@@QueenMaeve2024 Sorry, I am not familiar with that. Was he involved in some kind of atrocity?
