Thank you for this detailed instruction on using bias tape. I’ve always been afraid of this stuff, but love very tailored, cleanly finished clothes! So my conflict has interfered with tailoring and creating cool clothes for myself :( Don’t be afraid, people... watch great tutorials like this one :) And you also have the most beautifully shaped fingernails. So envious of them🤗
This has just (over two days!!) talked me through adding bias binding to the neck and arms of the first ever top I have made. Thank you so much!! So helpful.
Great video! I usually have to bother someone to help me. But, I did the bias tape (first time) on my jacket all by myself! I told my husband, "Look, Honey, I did it all by myself!" lol And all because of your wonderful video! You made it very easy to understand! THANK YOU! ♥
Just subscribed! This video was so helpful. I'm slowly teaching myself to sew and videos like this help bridge the gap when I don't know how to do a technique. I will be looking for more of your videos. Your directions are very clear. 🙂 Thanks again!
Your lessons are very good, clear and easy to understand. I have watched many lessons from you and all through them I would suggest better lighting, would be easier to see when your at the sewing machine. Thank you 👍
I thank you again for such a clear and concise tutorial. I have used bias binding on a neckline which came out OK although I now wish I had watched your tutorial before I did it I may have made a better job. I have now bought of number of different colours of bias binding as I will try it as a decorative item on another project. Can I ask it would work well on a jersey fabric? Many thanks
+Colin King Absolutely! I do believe that you can now buy jersey bias binding which is apparently a new product on the market, it is easier to find and buy online.
You`re a lifesaver! I always wondered exactly how to do this and now i have a little project to finish for xmas that`s a gift and thanks to you it can now be done and done good; THANK YOU!
Hi there, great videos, thank you. I have a question.... do you remove the whole of the seam allowance to allow for the extra width of the bias binding and do you remove this before you start sewing the bias binding on? :D x
great tutorial! thank you. The video could have been a little lighter/brighter. Thanks for using contrasting thread, it helps to see exactly what you are doing.
Thank you for this and all your other helpful sewing videos. One question about this one - when you said to trim the garment seam allowance, do you mean that when you are sewing in the crease on the first stitching pass that the crease in the binding is lined up on the seam line on the garment and the excess garment seam allowance is to be trimmed to be even with the edge of the binding? Thank you.
I don’t know what bias binding is, but I have been looking to try to find a video on how to add this beautiful velvet ribbon to the top of this dress that I’m trying to sew as a new person learning how to sew, and I was trying to find out if there was a certain width of ribbon. I should use or a technique or I can fold it over the bust portion of the dress And get it to look nice? Can I use just any velvet ribbon or just red ribbon? Maybe it won’t be velvet?
Bias binding is cut on the bias grain of fabric which gives it stretch quality, so that it can use it on straight and curved shapes. They do come in different widths. As you are new to sewing it best to work with bias tape as you intend to apply it to the bust area!
My preferred method is similar to yours, but I put the narrow side facing OUT, and sew it first, then fold the wider side to the inside, and then stitching on the right side I bury the stitches in the seamline ("stitch in the ditch") so you do not see the thread on the right side, but it catches the wider side on the inside. So much prettier.
Hi, is your machine husqvarna Viking?am intend to buy a sewing machine, can you pls tell which best machine for quilting and sewing? Husqvarna Viking which model pls?
Good tutorial. I do find that using bias tape on necklines makes it stand out too much,…how to i get it to lay flat to the skin i stead of it sticking up? Thanks…
Can you use double folded bias tape for curved edges? I accidentally made a double folded bias. I can't figure out if I can use it for curved edges or if its best to use single fold bias tape.
I must be thick. I can't figure out how to use bias binding, even after watching videos. It looks nice in a contrast colour but how do you trim the seam allowance before stitching on the bias binding, trim it all off like 1.5 cms? Also what are all the different folds for if you don't use them? Seems very complicated but I suppose it is one of those things that only make sense to you when you actually do it. Unfortunately I need to figure it out to finish my first project but the pattern instructions are very confusing.
Hello Sandra, you are not thick! There are many ways to use bias binding, I would recommend doing a couple or so test samples on scrap fabric. The different folds are for different options, as for the trimming of the seam allowance, it is not always necessary it depends on the fabric and project.. I hope that helps.
becky farmer No, because you make bias tape from your fabric. Many tutorials here on RUclips showing how you cut your fabric at a 45• angle to create customized bias tape to match/coordinate with your garments. Hope this helps. - Much success from a fellow fashion sewer🧵😊
hi, is it possible to stich the bias binding so that the top stitching is stitched on the actual garment so as not to show? is it too difficult to catch the underside?
This has helped me so much, best video I've found explaining how to do it. Thank you!
No problem Liz! Thank you for commenting.
I agree! She is Concise Colleen :)
Me too! I had a really hard time finding a bias binding tutorial for an opening that is already finished. You made it "see" easy...thank you Colleen!
Go for it! The beauty of fashion sewing is the so called rules can be bent or even broken. Innovation is key to personal success.

Thank you Shannon, sew happy you enjoyed my tutorial.
You are the best teacher for sewing on the internet. Thanks!
This has just (over two days!!) talked me through adding bias binding to the neck and arms of the first ever top I have made. Thank you so much!! So helpful.
Wonderful Victoria, sew happy you enjoyed the tutorial.
Wow! I'm honoured you should think so. Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement.
Thanks. Always happy to help. A video cast uses 'video' whilst a podcast generally is more like a radio show where you listen but not view.
I'm brand new to sewing and this was so helpful. Clearly spoken and well filmed. Thanks!

Thank you this will work great on the armholes of my vest.
Absolutely Jay, thanks for commenting.
That was really helpful. Am just starting out so find it a minefield! so much to learn, but so much fun.xxx
You need the seam allowance to allow the bias binding to anchor on, so you must keep it in place. The bias binding simply covers the seam.
thanks i love your videos. im a beginner and look forward to trying this out
Thanks!! Great video!
Thank you Victoria.
This is a huge help, thank you
Glad you found it helpful.
You're very welcome! Thanks for commenting.
I am working with a knit spandex, do u mind doing a demonstration on bias trim on the armhole or neckline using regular fabric instead of tape?

Thank you for taking the time to comment paul hemming.🙂
I think I will understand it more when my bias binding arrives in the post and I have it in front of me! he he. x
Since people love your videos so much maybe you should do a video cast instead of a podcast.
You very good I like you explain step by step god bless
Thank you so much.

Helpful…thanks
You're welcome Norman! Just out of interest, which sewing project did you use this technique?
Wouldn't it look better if you stitch over the same seam when doing the back fold? Like stitch in the ditch?
Yes that is possible, it's all about aesthetics that one is looking for in a project.
Good
Thanks
You are most welcome

Thank you for sharing your technique Mellie Cline.
Could you post a video of your technique?
Mellie Cline Great technique! Thanks for sharing. Also, do you suggest 2” width?
Nicest looking fingernails I've seen in any of these instruction videos
Thank you Judy.

Good tutorial. I do find that using bias tape on necklines makes it stand out too much,…how to i get it to lay flat to the skin i stead of it sticking up? Thanks…
You can always curve the bias tape first, before stitching. I hop that helps Christina!
Thank you so much!! :)
Hi, to sew binding for neckline is it the same as the armholes you showed? Neckline also must trim seam allowance?
Thankyou Mam!
No problem Leslie. Glad I could help.

if i want to use the same fabric for bias what should the measurements be
Generally about 5 cms or 2"inches. Thanks for commenting Custom Dollwear.
if you just use same fabric for facing neck and arm holes won't it just fray?
becky farmer No, because you make bias tape from your fabric. Many tutorials here on RUclips showing how you cut your fabric at a 45• angle to create customized bias tape to match/coordinate with your garments. Hope this helps. - Much success from a fellow fashion sewer🧵😊
What size bias binding did you use?
I used 2.5cm!
hi, is it possible to stich the bias binding so that the top stitching is stitched on the actual garment so as not to show? is it too difficult to catch the underside?
Yes it is possible, it's a good idea to baste it into place making sure you catch it on the underside.
Does anyone know: is it the bigger of the two folded halves which gets sewn to the neckline in the first step?
Hello Sandra! Yes you can sew the bigger side, if you want more of the bias to be on show to the front of the garment.
@@colleenglea Thank you so much
🍃🌸🍃THANK YOU!🍃🌸🍃
You are so welcome Deborah.
Is this piece cross cutting or straight cutting?
On the cross.
So, is there no need to trim and slash the armhole seam allowence?
Hello Kitta, you could if you wish trim the seam allowance if you think the armhole needs it.
Colleen G Lea - FSBTV ok. Thank you for replying
😍😍😍
Thank you Nicel Tiongzon!
