Quit beating yourself up for trusting in people. I choose to believe in the goodness of people. That being said, being smarter about how we trust is something that we constantly learn. Don’t stop your mission... get whom ever needs getting! Future : you should always get the old parts and a good mechanic will have them ready and show you what’s up. You can take them with you if you want. Don’t ask for them before but expect them after.
Also: nothing beats stopping at a couple of local parts stores and asking if they can recommend any local to help you with whatever you think needs done. Locals know.

It also prevents your parts from being sold by someone else. They sell used tires...so some most likely sell used parts. There is no such thing as an ordinary person. Everyone operates...how do they operate on customers vehicles? Understanding people is an art. The art of others. That nonsense about a mechanic and that deceit is freaking real. It's an undercurrent of goodness and promoting trust.

I'm a women and an electrician who knows a lot about my vehicles. Many repair shops treat me like I know nothing about a repair, even though I usually have already diagnosed the condition myself. Lots of places take advantage of women all the time, yes constantly, so you really need to be on top of things. It helps to have a small diagnostic computer to plug in a vehicle port that has an app for your phone. There are some not too expensive decent ones that can save you time and money.
Never ever get repairs done sight unseen. Always let the mechanic know you will need to see the problems before any repairs are done and you need a written estimate or the work is not authorized. It's important they know to save the old parts for inspection at any time, not just after work is done. Sometime failed parts can be returned for money or replaced free when under warranty. Used parts especially tires can be resold, which is another way to make money off of you. There's a good chance you can be charged a fee to dispose of your tires, even if they are kept to resale.
When your rig gets checked out again or each time repairs are done, make sure to take pictures of all the parts and pieces as they inspect it. Take pictures of the brand names, conditions like wear & tear along with pics of receipts. This helps show parts failure for warranties or bad workmanship.
An electronic copy of records in the cloud or laptop can be very useful. Many Notebook style apps that sync computers/cell phones are available and you probably even already have one. Folders/notes can be labeled with the date, repair shop, and repair plus contain the related photos. Electronic files are easilty searchable by label or content. It's also a good place to keep warranty info. Since many parts don't have a warranty paper/flyer/ booklet I always write the specifics on or attach it to the receipt.
When it concerns home/vehicle repair it's a good idea to check the BBB/Consumer Protection for official complaints. Unscrupulous businesses may be able to buy/fake some good reviews but it's more difficult to remove data from official public records.
@Carolyn's RV Life I hope things mentioned help you or anyone in some way and all turns out for the best.
    Don't forget to breathe.

If I take it in for one thing and get a laundry list of repairs "needed" I always say "Okay thanks for telling me I will take it to my regular mechanic and have that checked". Before approving work, go on line to see how to tell if the repair is required. I guarantee the information is out there on how to inspect anything to confirm what the shop told you. You should tell the guy you got to go arrange for the money then go do your research. You also said you didn’t like doing things like actually looking the rig over, for 4 grand you can learn to like doing the inspection. The roads you drive over can eat up your front tires (especially cheap ones), mostly by knocking your front-end out of line. It’s easy to check what tires should cost...just google the discount tire stores. Also buy a tire thread gauge to check the depth of the thread, they are cheap and It’ll show if you need new tires.

I recently had a 5 google star reviewed dentist try to rip every tooth out of my head and give me dentures. When I asked about periodontal surgery options or implants her demeanor went dark the way I've heard people describe Bundy going dark. I have never had a dentist so excited to not want to save a tooth much less all of them. I saw a periodontist who said I just needed root planing and scaling. There are literal psycopaths out there and it freaks me out every time I have a run in with one because you aren't wrong, most people are good.

      @yippeekayee8789 3 года назад +2

Before you judge her look at the research about how dentures are easier to take care of and healthier for some people, because gum disease allows bacteria to get into the blood stream which increases inflammation and heart disease risk. Dentists who try to save bad natural teeth are also making lots of money from that; dentures are cheap in comparison. The dentist also might be from a culture where it's much more common for people to get dentures instead of expensive dental work. So maybe the dentist actually wanted the best, healthiest, and cheapest treatment for you!

I had the timing chain go out on my Ford Ranger and I pulled it over, more like coasted it to the curb and called AAA. I had it towed to the ford dealership, off loaded it in the service area my friend took a match and set it on the top of the tire. We went back to my house and waited for them to call. I had gotten a quote of $180.00 to replace it earlier on the phone, there is a tool we didn’t have so we needed a garage to do it. About 4 hours went by and they called with a total of over $1,200.00!!! It started off with a $200.00 “diagnosis fee”, when I told them what it was to begin with! Then we moved on to the timing chain/belt, rocker arms, etc, etc., I was stunned! My friend and I got in his truck and went back to the dealership and my truck was in the same place we left it, how we knew was the match was still right there on the tire!! A lot of things that “needed to be replaced” the truck would have needed to be brought in and the top part of the engine removed for them to have checked it for that $200.00 diagnostic fee! I went ballistic right there at the service department and manager they could not get me out quick enough!! I called AAA to tow my truck home. I told the dealership if you expect one red cent from me they would have to sue me! I called a mobile mechanic that had a harmonic balancer and for $50.00 labor charge he did the work in my garage. That was 15 years ago and the other “repairs” the dealership said needed to be done (knock on wood) never did! This truck has been with me for 20 years and is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Don’t be hard on yourself, be hard on the repair hack I am so glad you will fight this and tell everyone who he is. “Word of mouth” CAN go both ways if people speak out!!

Your not alone. I had trouble with my truck and brought it in and asked them to do the $99 diagnostic exam. Well, they had it 3 weeks and never called me to tell me what was wrong. I called them and they said it was ready. I went in and they replaced a lot of parts and gave me the bill of $860! They proceeded to hold Mt truck for ransom until it was paid. A year and a half later the truck broke down again and I towed it to a mechanic. I told him that I thought it was the fuel pump. I asked him to check it. He had the truck a few weeks and then he called and said it was fixed. So I go in and he had replaced ALL of the parts that were replaced previously! Then HE HELD it for ransom too! $605!!! Neither of the mechanics ever called to tell me what they wanted to do. They just assumed that I would go along with anything. They both ripped me off. BTW, the truck is still broken and won't start and I can't afford to have it towed to the mechanic. Uggg.

The writer, Jack Kerouac, said, "Paranoia is based on reality." People are out to get other people whom they perceive to be more vulnerable than they are. They violate other people just because they can do so. I have been a victim too many times on vehicle repairs. These shops need to be regulated.
Carolyn said she needed to do more due diligence. She blamed herself initially, but gladly she replaced that with being a fighter dedicated to proving the grand theft of $4,500, even thought he too quickly knocked of $250 when she questioned such a high price.
She read his intention totally accurately. She caught him. She knows what she's doing. She just doesn't want to believe there are so many toxic, evil people out there with all these personality disorders.

I'm a little late to the show but your channel is so informative that I wanted to add my 2 cents. As many women will agree, we tend to get taken advantage of by mechanics because we lack their knowledge. It's a frustrating and scary thing when our vehicles breakdown. When I was married my husband took care of everything mechanical, and my father did as well. Now I am single and plow through each problem by educating myself over the internet. But I wanted to share what my daughter has taught me about taking an active role in tackling problems by immersing yourself in learning to do it yourself. Kelly is 38 years old wife and mother who will get under the hood of her vehicle to fix things herself. She has manuels, reference materials and is an unbelievable detective using anything she can to get to the bottom of a problem. Her problem solving skills don't stop at vehicles. As a daughter of third generation plumber, she can tackle just about anything that comes up. It must be in the genes. She's amazing and has home schooled both her kids while working full time as an office mgr for a local plumbing company. Women need to learn more about trouble shooting, repairing and construction. It will help us to be independent. Sorry about the length of this but I wish I had learned more than home economics in school.

I am a woman and my dad was a mechanic I was taught how to do basic maintenance as a matter of course and know more about cars than maybe 80% of the public and I've still been ripped off plenty of times. Most recently, I was ripped off to the tune of 5,000 and counting within the last 6 months involving 2 cars, and 3 mechanics and I am still without a car, so don't feel badly. There are cheats out there looking for people who know less than they do and are therefore easy to fleece. Just this year I have paid for things that were never done as per the inspector who examined the car for state licensing just after getting it back from the mechanic. This happened not just once, not just twice, but several times at different shops. Learn to protect yourself, which you are doing, but keep your anger for the other guy and stop beating up on yourself. This is a very educational and valuable video. All the best.

Re: Tires. There is a Federal regulation that requires that tires have serial numbers and date codes. Before you're going into a shop, you can write down this information that's molded (or stamped) into the rubber of each tire. I suggest that all RV owners do this.

For several years I was a warranty clerk and service advisor. When the guys were beating on the women to sell them stuff they didn't need they would see me at my desk and talk to me. Some in tears. I remember one tech who told a lady her brake lines were leaking and the brake fluid reservoir was cracked and rotors etc.. she had just had service done at our parent dealer. I called and had every repair order faxed over. I saw that the shop was wrong and took the lady over to the tech for him to show her what was wrong. I also brought one of our chilton books so I could show her the whole system and explain it to her with visuals. The kid was a new guy trying to make more money. our shop was a flat rate. I told the Service Manager and the kid was fired on the spot. One of our shop foremen checked everything out and she was fine. So I started to handle most of the women customers because I took the time to show them what was wrong and explain how things worked. Visuals and books tell the story...hope if they did rip you off which it sounds like they did I would definitely wipe up the floor with him. Good luck and keep us posted. Give Sadie hug for me.

The problem is that if you don't understand something, they can fool you. Here in the Netherlands we have an organization that stands up for the interests of motorists, the ANWB. They can inspect your car and the report tells you exactly what needs to be done about your car. The garage can then repair everything that is in the report. After that you can have another check to see if the work has been done properly. Do you not have this option in the USA?

But also, like you, I learned so much more about my rig and what to look for so lessons learned.... I have a gut instinct that Carolyn will get her money back. She has the witness testimony from her first mechanic a year ago, plus the second mechanic would not return her phone call about finding the removed rotors, and the Better Business Bureau will give him a demerit that can force him to resolve the issue. I got $140 back after posting on the BBB site. Carolyn is trusting; I am, too. But she is very smart and knows how to follow-up and makes this guy accountable and pay for what he did. He is committing a felony of grand theft by this rip-off.

Well, that sux. I bought a used car from a dealer that had an issue that they “discovered “ after the first oil change. I fought them and got my car repaired for free. They also tried to tell me I needed a service done that I’d had done on a previous visit once.
Now they send me a video inspection every time I’m having service done to my car. That might be a good option for the future- have them show a video or FaceTime you the repair that needs to be done.
Sorry that you got ripped off, but thanks for calling it out. It’s a good reminder to everyone to do research/know the maintenance schedule for their vehicle/s RV or other.

If it's an expensive repair, I take it someplace else and (without telling them what I was told) see if they find the same issue. But I understand in your situation you may not have an option to get a second opinion.

I admire you for calling out the mechanic. I’m not sure I’d have the nerve or energy to do that. I’m curious to see where this goes.
If I can share my experience -- in spring 2020, I took my car for an oil change and got a “courtesy” multi-point checkup. The service person told me I needed new spark plugs (among several other fixes), which would cost around $200+ to change. I told him I’d give it some thought. In summer 2020, I asked my brother to help me change my spark plugs. Spark plugs for my car at an auto parts store cost $25. Even at the time my brother said my spark plugs looked fine to him, but we changed them anyway. It took us some time (maybe an hour), but we got the spark plugs changed. Just this week (Spring 2021) I took my car into the dealer for an airbag replacement that was covered by the manufacturer. Again, I got a “courtesy” multi-point checkup, and again, the dealer said I needed new spark plugs!
My point is -- I don’t think the service people even look at the wear on these parts. I think if your vehicle is at a certain mileage point, they give you standard “recommendations” for parts replacement. Unless my car won’t pass my state safety inspection without the “recommendation” being done, I don’t bother to do it. IMHO, these “courtesy checks” and “recommendations” are an upsell, scam, ripoff and I wish they wouldn’t do them!

Also shops are supposed to give you an itemized list of what needs to be done and cost so you can review it yourself or with another shop. Yeah...you’re right...people suck sometimes. Mechanic’s get away with murder because there’s little to no accountability. They do it to women in particular because they count on us being afraid and simply not knowing any better. It’s funny because when you mentioned it last week, I remembered when you had those break’s done last year! A warning went off in my brain too. I lease my vehicle, and the time before last, my dealership recommended all this work expecting that I wouldn’t know any better. So, I checked in with this other place that I liked. They checked my tires for free multiple times, family owned all that. And, he said no way! I had to go back to dealership because my battery was dying and it was still under warranty. When the guy at dealership saw that I had skipped the oil change there, he realized he F’d up suggesting all those other services. So, yeah....TRUST NO MECHANIC! At least until he/she (let’s be real it’s mostly he) has proven himself honest already. I’m sorry this happened. Don’t be so hard on yourself though because when our energy is thrown off by illness or stress we will often attract predators. Nothing to fear, it’s just the way of the world. I still believe there is more good than bad out there! I’m with you!!! I say if you can hold that mf’r accountable, do it!!! Cause you’re doing it for all of us too!!!! Hugs!!!

@@CarolynsRVLife I am like you though, very trusting until you fuck me over, then watch out!! That’s one of my Virgo traits. Lol
Despite this rotten business, happy 5 years on the road!! You continue to be an inspiration! 😊

@@CarolynsRVLife You'll get him, Carolyn! I usually do. I start with my bank, show my proof, and then the Better Business Bureau and write my posts in pithy prose and name the names, the dates, the who did what to whom. Blast his name out all over your channel.
A lot of RVers watch you even if they don't comment. I am commenting now, because this is just too much grand theft. Stop him so he can't keep on being a toxic person who likes to hurt people.

Carolyn, I hope you get this situation taken care of. When I watched your last video and you starting rattling off what they did to your RV I was like wasn't that already done recently. Something seemed off but I thought i might have mixed up your RVs and it was Matilda. PLEASE fight this battle for ALL of us!
