When you are nailing the end of a board it invariably splits, because you are separating the fibres. To stop that happening, turn the nail upside down first and flatten the point slightly with your hammer. Then when you hammer in your nail it crushes the fibres downwards instead of outwards preventing splitting.
In the future, if you have a tight joint like that just rub a bar of soap on the stuck area and it should slide nicely into place. It's one of the odd things I keep in my toolbox. Thank you for sharing it makes my day when you post a new vlog! 🥰
Love your videos! Awesome shower! Love seeing the team work between you both and the excitement when a project is finished. My husband and I live is a rural community in Newfoundland in a house with all amenities. On top of our full time jobs, we do everything as a team from running the house, repairs, builds, projects, snow clearing, yard maintenance etc. We love the outdoors from riding our quad for fun or hunting, to snow shoeing, backyard fires, and walking around our area behind our house which is all woods and bogs listening to the birds, berry picking when in season and taking in the beautiful scenery. We are not off the grid, but do certainly enjoy the outdoors a lot and what it entails and has to offer. I lived in big cities my whole life around Canada, but I love this rural living so much and would never go back to living in a big city again. We do also go to a dry cabin at times in the winter and love it. You both are such a great, fun loving couple and I thoroughly enjoy watching you both and learn quite a lot from you. My husband grew up here so he is very familiar with rural living and off grid as his family did it for years growing up and when they lived 4-5 months a year at a remote community only accessible by boat for their fishing income. A hard life his parents say whom are in their 80’s now, but say it was a great life full of great times and memories. Love from Newfoundland, Canada! ❤️
I look forward to seeing your video every week, you two are a great example of America. Thank you for sharing your Alaskan life with the rest of the world.
Excellent project, you could make a simple door with the the roof materials and still have a good light source. Stay safe and awaiting your next adventure.
That's so nice to have the propane heater inside the house so it doesn't freeze. And being able to pass stuff through the window is super handy. The rubber duckies are a nice touch. Haha!
You are planning on keeping this shower for awhile aren't ya? That is one awesome off grid shower. I love the shower head thru the window because it means you get hot water! Love the duckies
11:28 - It's entertaining to watch Arielle when she gets in her hyper "get shit done" state where she doesn't even give Eric the chance to respond. LOL too funny, love you guys
Wouldnt it be good to make a small channel for water removal, for safety purposes, reducing ice around the area. Maybe some support for walking down the step(s) ? thinking i might be quite slippery :)
I noticed that you have a cat door. I can’t have a cat door, because of smaller animals that might want to come in for whatever reason. One of my friends had a possum come in their house and make its self at home. Plus I live in Arkansas and I would be afraid of snakes coming in. I have a cattle farm, and live on the lake. Love watching your family. Thanks for sharing.
Why not a sauna? In Finland when you purchase a proberty you make first outhouse, then sauna and last cottage. Sauna solves problems of washing people and clothes. You can dehydrate anything.
Totally agree on having a sauna, bath, laundry ... a "wet" house. (With serious heat!) My guess is they have lots of building plans, lots of available lumber and the amazing saw mill. - Cabin on their nearby land to be used as a B & B or rental ... for making income. - Adding an addition onto their house for indoor gardening needs, larger living area, utility room, heated storage ... and, maybe, possibly, rooms for children. - Cold storage, or "root cellar" for food. - More solar and a serious plumbing system. AND, they still want to have fun and hopefully share a lot of it with us.
@@TsunamiKitten56 many outdoor saunas have a water tank next to the stove so the water is hot and you mix it with cold water and pour over your head. It’s best to then jump into the lake if you’re lucky!
Awesome build guys. It's sweet that even taking a shower is a two person job in your home ,it keeps you so connected on every level. You really do complement and complete each other ❤
We did the outdoor winter shower all last winter in a very windy cold environment. When you are trying to conserve your water, you aren't going to be hanging out there like a teen age girl letting the water run down the drain while you sing Brittany Spears songs. In and out, get down to business. Just the same, there is something about the cold wind blowing snow on you when you are standing under hot water that is particularly awesome.
You guys always post your videos at the perfect time!!! I’m just about to jump in a lovely hot bath and escape from the kids so I can watch my Alaska fix in piece!
Could never tell you how to, what to or when to build, plant crops, or make your coffee....you got it! Your young and are learning by doing. The best way to survive!!! Have fun living..you are " nailing it" ! Have watched you from the start...Thanks for a fun video and hope you have a lovely holiday.
This was one of my favorite episodes ever on so Many levels… amazing abilities with your chainsaw…the Austin Powers joke when you were hammering with The ball peen hammer …I laughed out loud… The shot with the rubber duckies at the end. Outdoor amenities in Alaska. living off of one tiny little generator You are one hearty people! Hello from Oregon
Since the shower will block the window anyway, I think I'd make a door where the window is so the shower could be entered from the house instead of going outside to enter. Don't you just love how all of us are telling you what to do? Best wishes!!
I love breakfast at Eric & Ariels Place ! Everything requires teamwork,,Thats the way life really is ! Me,my wife, & so many other people Really enjoy Everything you share.
Eric & Arielle, the shower is fab. I too, love it!! I would have added an internal sliding door with a light wooden frame & perplex to protect from prevailing winds without detracting from that wonderful live front panel. Maybe in winter, a super cheap isolating foam pipe cover could be slipped over the outside part of the shower pipe to reduce water heat loss. Thank you for my escape to Alaska! Keep safe.
The rubber duckies at the end was so great! Question: have y’all ever thought of a small tension rod with some sort of shower curtain to put over the large door opening to keep the large part of wind from coming in during windier days? Like one at a gym or water park? Also, is there anything you need to do to waterproof the wood so it doesn’t get water damage or is it good to go already? You guys did such an amazing job with this! It’s such a solid build and will last for quite some time!
I had the same thought, only thing I could think that might be an issue is the wind would just blow the curtain so they would need some way to clip the bottom to keep it in place! Other than that I would think it would sure help on those days!
I know they used some treated pieces for stuff but yeah the milled lumber I am curious with as well because If it’s not treated it rots down here at least where I am on the Gulf Coast
I kept checking to see if you were going to post an update on the shower. Crazy that I can be so excited about someone's shower but hey... I am!!!! You guys are the best and your authentic!!!!! Never change!!!!
Three suggestions: 1. Drill a hole in the wall near the window and run a hose with a Quick Connect piece on the inside of the wall and do the same to the outside wall and take the shower wand out with you and connect to the Quick Connect piece when you use shower. 2. Too late now, but I would have sloped the floor on a half inch grade and left a one inch gap on the last floor board near entrance to have a long drain so water wouldn’t pool inside. 3. Add a door. It could be made out of the same stuff you put on roof. It would warm things up in there while in shower and still let in light. Great job on shower and all the projects you do. By the way, have you ever canned butter? I just found out this can be done and it lasts for five years on the shelf! Keep up the great job!
Hi guys. Been loving what youre doing for a while. Im living through you. Youre no whiners, Ill say that for you. Here I thought the growing your own food, being self reliant and the constant work was the tough part. After noticing the many many bossy, rude and judgmental comments on here I see the real challenge. I accept its your life. Its your channel. Im just observing. And I keep in mind your channel is SIMPLE Living Alaska. Im glad you found the lifestyle that suits you. Sending you 👍 and best wishes.
They truly are amazing & great to watch. I love how happy they are & don't need much to be so happy. But, they do have a great love for each other, & that's so much more than a lot of people have!! God bless them!
Congratulations on 500k subscribers!! It’s great watching your channel and fan base grow. Thank you for the content you two provide; you give adventure and confidence to many longing to live more sustainably and independently. Speaking for myself, I have learned and applied many things to my life that I saw watching your development over these few years! Again, congratulations!
I usually watch RUclips on my TV and there isn’t a comment option. After watching this video, I had to log into my phone to comment!! I’ve probably watched all your videos and always found your lack of affection to be kinda odd, but today it was so darn cute seeing you two kiss and hug at the thought of you sharing a shower! As much as I love how informative your videos are, it’s nice to see you two showing tenderness for each other too
28:23 use the flat side of the hammer -- it's actually designed for just this type of situation -- you can even use a larger hammer. Also, pound the nails about 1/2" before moving the board into place.
Yep and All I could think about was 'for the love of a palm nailer.' Of course, you need air, but I can't believe I didn't get one sooner. Handy for situations like this and rafter / joist work.
I know nails are a lot cheaper, but I do love those star drive (torx) decking screws. So easy to drive and they virtually never strip like Phillips screws do. I'd drill holes in a 45° angle and toe nail (toe screw??) those boards.
Ya'll rock the Alaska lifestyle gig. It is hard to imagine showering outdoors in -0 temps. Seems like the water would freeze pretty much on contact. I am way too soft for that.
Here is a trick for you when cutting biscuits, cut straight down and straight up, don't twist when you are cutting down and pulling up, by not twisting you will achieve much higher biscuits. When you twist it actually seals the edges of each biscuit which stops them from rising to their full potential. Great job on the shower build, thanks for sharing it with us.
And let someone buy you a GOOD rolling pin! You bake enough to qualify for a good one, one without handles and about 50% longer. Go to King Arthur Baking and look for one :-) Very inexpensive and so worth it :-)
Love the new shower! Two suggestions: 1) Maybe add a shower curtain of some kind to keep wind out. When not in use, could secure it with a curtain tie back. When in use, could have grommets on the curtain at specific points to keep it from blowing in the wind while showering. 2) You might consider what plants grow in Alaska that prefer more moisture. Maybe an herb garden of some kind that would be kept wet by the showers? Here in the South, we have various bog plants. Don't know what you might have there, but not only will it help utilize the water, it was beautify the space as well. ❤❤
The plants are a really good idea! I was wondering about the water but never thought of that. Such a good use! I was also thinking of a shower curtain of sorts just a simple small tension rod with a small shower curtain like at a gym or water park just to keep the brunt of the wind out.
Great build Guys. Think about a 8" frost water tap with a open Gardena fitting. Have the male connected to your shower head, you bring this in and out during the winter. Just an idea 😃.
I think your next project should be a SAUNA (pronounced SOW-NAH). That would make winter bathing sooooo nice! The Finlanders know how to do it up right if you need any design plans. Love your channel and your love of real food 😊❤. I'm inspired. -Janine from Northern Ontario, Canada
YES! My thoughs exactly. There's nothing better than walking home from hot sauna in a cold winter night. That heat sustains you until the next morning.
Excellent job, looks great. You might want to make a handle from a curved branch to put on the outside. It would match the exterior and give you something to hold on to when the step gets icy. I so enjoy watching all your projects.
You’ll definitely stay a lot warmer in that new sturdy shower. Looks like you’re now ready for the hard freeze. I always have a smile on my face while watching your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Ariel: put the live edge on the inside so you can bask. Me: Don't know about anyone else, but my ass would not be basking in minus 30c in winter, or Alaska's other season, you know... Mosquito misery!
The shower is amazing, shelf for Kitty and ducks in a row!! I’m so grateful I found your channel….watching you guys live your best life is so wonderful…..❤️💫❤️
We live in Wyoming and we have a walkway between our house and garage that has two skylights. We started with the same clear plastic material on those skylights but we found that the cold and wind made it very brittle and then sun and hail ruined it. We have a Menards store about an hour from us and they had clear plastic panels that are actually made to build a greenhouse with, and they are much thicker and stronger. We had been replacing those other panels every other year or so and since we got the thicker stuff, we haven't replaced them since. Also might hold the heat in better too. They also make a little solar powered light bulb that you can hang on a hook for some light they work great! Love your videos, my husband and I always say, "man if we were 20 years younger we would be doing that!"
What are your panels called. Looking to replace a covered patio but have been wondering about the polycarbonate panels snd how they would hold up. I’m in the PNW of Oregon. Reason for choosing this type of paneling is for the light it will allow in. Thank you in advance for responding😃👍🏼
I used those same panels on my chicken tractor and the same thing happened to me. I live in Ohio so we don't get as cold as Wyoming or Alaska, and our summer highs are normally only in the 80's. They are nice for a short while but sadly don't last long tern.
@@bonnied3550 There's suntuf & palruf. Palruf is $20/sheet & lasts 3-4 years (in Vermont). Suntuf double the cost & lasts twice as long. Both can hold heavy snow if properly installed, it's the sun that degrades the poly. gets very brittle in cold and yes a large hail can go right thru palruf in the cold
Looks Great!!! I like seeing chainsaws used as construction and carpentry tools. You can appreciate the mill, by comparing the outhouse (Pre-Mill) vs the new shower (Mill ownership). I'm a bit surprised you didn't expand the cabin and put in a shower/bathroom. Cut a door into the side of the house and you would have a much more comfortable necessity. Perhaps that is a future project, and the shower could not wait. Get some water-proof stain on that floor and a couple of boards up from the floor. You'll get a couple of years extra out of your work.
I am very curious about why not just have the shower a part of the house? Especially since it practically is...🤔🤷🏼♀️ You could have put that addition right against the house & cut a door way from house to shower house.🤔🤔🤷🏼♀️ Idk? Maybe I'm not understanding something?
Perspective, am I right ;) Feb 1980 I was camp cook for a construction crew of 12 in remote Alaska. Minus 20 and colder the whole time. We were lucky to get water we didn’t have to melt first. I completely love your attitude with the um, irregularities of life in Alaska, ESPECIAL,LY being off-grid. You two are doin it right! Appreciate your vids!
Ariel questions: 1. what do you both do when there is a toothache either you or Eric has (any remedy)? 2. After outdoor chores Winter indoor activities (books, movies or tv shows you both like and watch on any platform netflix, Hulu etc) Stay safe. GOD BLESS.
I love your videos. They bring me a lot of peace and give me a lot of hope for our future. My backyard is my garden and my haven. City life, but I do what I can and share what I can with our younger generations. My grandparents & parents taught me so much about growing, preserving and cooking food and sharing that with my sons and anyone else who wants to learn also give me hope. Anyway, keep on being awesome and grounded. It's having an impact in places I'm not sure you even realize.
That's pretty hardcore but I do have a question. How do you earn money? Your buying stuff and using money wisely just interested. Im retired and make 9 k a month after taxes.... did 28 years in the military.
Most projects I understand on this channel... but this one 🤔 🤔! It’s going to start sinking it’s too heavy to be on mud 🤷🏻♀️ and the window is blocked 🤔 idk lol but nice craftsmanship 👍
The two of you could be off-grid contractors for people thinking of moving to Alaska. You have accomplished so much in the last couple of years and everything you've built has held up really well over time. You guys are such an inspiration. I've backtracked and started watching from the beginning and I'm stressing since I'm catching up pretty fast. Now I have to wait till you post something 😂😂
The outdoor shower I grew up with was roofless, it had a beautiful view across the river which was nice but it was absolutely horrendous when the weather was bad. When you absolutely MUST take a shower but it's ice cold rain happening it gave me literal chills and I was in a hot country (Jamaica). I can not imagine having to endure that where you are. A clear roof is an absolute must for me now that I've seen this. Ya'll killed it and the damages in the wood looks soo good! 💪
How dare you!!! Blah blah blah...... we should not be taking showers at all. If you're going to save my life, you need to give up all showers, electricity, gas, and any other comforts!!!
I love watching your show. One of my closest friends lives in Alaska and he knows about y'all too. Johnny Cordeiro is his name. He's a tour guide and he loves it there too. Yall keep it so real like he does. He was my son's best friend. I love him like he's my son too. My son died March 11 of this year.
I don’t usually bother leaving comments like this, but I noticed for the first time ever on this channel, some particularly nasty comments from people. Honestly wtf. Some serious elitism going on if you scroll back enough. How anyone could think to leave y’all a nasty comment is beyond me. Excellent project, you could make a simple door with the the roof materials and still have a good light source. Stay safe and awaiting your next adventure.
I’m a black grandma from Harlem (NYC) who adores what you’re doing
Best Wishes👌🏾
Why mention that you're black? Just curious.
@@okthennone just for perspective
My husband and I are in our 60's and love your content, you guys are living your best life !!!! it inspires us even at our age
That's so nice to have the propane heater inside the house so it doesn't freeze. And being able to pass stuff through the window is super handy. The rubber duckies are a nice touch. Haha!
Duckies will be BIGGER ONES SOME day hahaha!!!
You are planning on keeping this shower for awhile aren't ya? That is one awesome off grid shower. I love the shower head thru the window because it means you get hot water! Love the duckies
Another great build. The rubber ducky’s at the end made me giggle!
Or stepping "stones" that keep your feet above ground level.
@@ithinkdoyou i imagine they were shoes or something on their feet
I noticed that you have a cat door. I can’t have a cat door, because of smaller animals that might want to come in for whatever reason. One of my friends had a possum come in their house and make its self at home. Plus I live in Arkansas and I would be afraid of snakes coming in. I have a cattle farm, and live on the lake. Love watching your family. Thanks for sharing.
Why not a sauna? In Finland when you purchase a proberty you make first outhouse, then sauna and last cottage. Sauna solves problems of washing people and clothes. You can dehydrate anything.
♥️
Totally agree on having a sauna, bath, laundry ... a "wet" house. (With serious heat!)
My guess is they have lots of building plans, lots of available lumber and the amazing saw mill.
The only issue I see would be how they can have a sauna while off grid
@@TsunamiKitten56 Why does a sauna need electricity?
@@TsunamiKitten56 many outdoor saunas have a water tank next to the stove so the water is hot and you mix it with cold water and pour over your head. It’s best to then jump into the lake if you’re lucky!
You both inspired us to move back to Alaska and live off grid. Lots of challenges but there is nothing like it.
Awesome build guys. It's sweet that even taking a shower is a two person job in your home ,it keeps you so connected on every level.
You really do complement and complete each other ❤
Eric and Arielle you guy's are awesome. From building, harvesting, cooking, fishing and exploring all that you have is just simply amazing.
Have you considered a waterproof/canvas “doorway” to help keep the heat in? Or even using a poly roof panel on a hinge?
I don't know, why bother with anything at all. They just need a platform to stand on.
@@directech if you were showering a -10 you would want to trap as much heat as you could
Any kind of door would help keep the heat in. A light weight door frame then use the same material they used for the roof would work well.
@@terryjp3050 now would you get totally wet head to toe in -10 degrees??? Lmao.
I really admire the standard of craftsmanship you both put into every task and project whether it’s canning ,hunting or building ! Very impressive!
A much better shower than the bucket you started out with. You have done so much since you first moved in. I was waiting for your video.
But that’s where there sink is indoors so they’d then have to move the sink !!!!!,
I was thinking the same :)
I agree.
I think the sink is to the right of the window. I'm waiting for the to make an additional room to be used as a pantry.
Yes! It’ll also help with easier access when adjusting the temp.
I also wondered about waterproofing the wood. Maybe it's the kind of wood you don't have to ..? I know nothing about this...
Or maybe a door would be better for windy days.
@@Sqwizgaar maybe they could add like a sliding barn door?? 🤔
Totally agree, love them,
Love this channel. This and Kyle's Cabin are my favorite.
Me too I agree 100%
I agree 👍
Yep yep!!
Won't be long until the mill has paid for itself. The shower is built to last! Great project!!👌✌💟
Americans in general have become too soft. Everything is easy, too easy. Including myself
Surely true 😃
LOL I was going to comment the same thing! And, gentle roll of the dough! 😊😆
Great tip!!
And let someone buy you a GOOD rolling pin! You bake enough to qualify for a good one, one without handles and about 50% longer. Go to King Arthur Baking and look for one :-) Very inexpensive and so worth it :-)
Good advice. My home econ teacher used to say the same about baking scones
The rubber duckies were the best part of the video! Love your creativity and great sense of humour! Wonderful job guys!
Love the new shower!
Two suggestions:
1) Maybe add a shower curtain of some kind to keep wind out.
Mint loves wet feet and it smells great too. Would it overwinter there though.
You just can't hardly kill mint once it's established. But again don't know about Alaska 💕 💕 💕
As always, you two have all your ducks in a row…🙃. You are a great and talented team.
I'm becoming addicted to you channel! thank for sharing your wonderful life
Excellent job, looks great. You might want to make a handle from a curved branch to put on the outside. It would match the exterior and give you something to hold on to when the step gets icy. I so enjoy watching all your projects.
Great idea about a handle to help with an icy step.
What a chic shower! Arielle, you have a designer's eye. Very nice of you to think of a shelf for your cat. Beautiful work, you two!
Howdy Neighbor
Is that tankless water heater venting into the cabin?? I hope you guys have a carbon monoxide detector 🤔. Love the channel.
Of course we do 🙂 Venting inside is not problematic because we only operate it for short periods.
The easy way to set your gaps between boards is to just tap a nail in the the 2 by 4s and pull them after you fasten the board
8200 views in 30 minutes - well deserved interest I say! Thanks for great content guys, much love from Russia.
Have you considered a cheap shower curtain? It would help the breeze from the door.
Ariel questions:
1. what do you both do when there is a toothache either you or Eric has (any remedy)?
2. After outdoor chores Winter indoor activities (books, movies or tv shows you both like and watch on any platform netflix, Hulu etc)
Stay safe.
Oh my gosh I would freeze to death! Y’all are amazing
I never thought I’d be jealous of someone’s outdoor shower!
You could ad something like a saloondoor to reduce the wind a little more. that would look really cool :))
Two brave souls to walk out in the cold to shower and pee. God bless you both!
That's pretty hardcore but I do have a question. How do you earn money? Your buying stuff and using money wisely just interested. Im retired and make 9 k a month after taxes.... did 28 years in the military.
I'm so addicted to your channel, I love how you two work together. My husband says that I talk about you kids as if we were friends. God bless
Most projects I understand on this channel... but this one 🤔 🤔! It’s going to start sinking it’s too heavy to be on mud 🤷🏻♀️ and the window is blocked 🤔 idk lol but nice craftsmanship 👍
Knocked it out of the park!!!
The steps are perfecto
Stay clean, ya’ll. : )
I'm sorry!
I'm so sorry for your loss. ❤
My sincerest condolences are being sent. Will keep you in my prayers.🙏💗🙏
May you know that I'm keeping you in my prayers!!!
Extremely sorry for your loss! Condolences 🙏🏽
A shelf for Pepper! Love it. Happy bathing you two.
Absolutely LOVE the guest appearances there at the end.
I don’t usually bother leaving comments like this, but I noticed for the first time ever on this channel, some particularly nasty comments from people. Honestly wtf. Some serious elitism going on if you scroll back enough. How anyone could think to leave y’all a nasty comment is beyond me. Hands down the best channel on RUclips, and just in case, I hope those shit comments don’t ruin your day…ever ;)
Nice job. Very nice, solid, neatly-built shower. Would you have trouble with ice buildup on the floor, steps and surrounding ground in winter?
Watching this episode and seeing you 2 sitting at 499k subs makes me very happy! Been watching since shortly after you moved up to alaska and wait eagerly for the new uploads! Keep up the great work! Oh and PS.. Ariel's hammering skills are impressive!
You guys should use some Thompson’s waterproof decking sealant inside and out of the shower 👍
those chemicals are the exact things that Ariel does NOT want in their ground nor ground water.
Have been checking everyday for the completion of your shower video .. awesome surprise to wake up to .. love your channel .. wishing you all the best from Capetown, South Africa
That is an awsome shower. I'm disappointed Bandit didn't get the first shower - you know he wanted to. Making a shelf for Kitty - wonderful pet parents.
I love your wood working projects. This is one of my favourites :)
Just sat down and I received a 'bell'!
Y’all are so down to earth and just THE BEST!!
Love watching you two build things--you both are very practical and down to earth and the videos are not overproduced. Stay warm!
Glad you got it completed before the BIG Dump!! Don't know how much you got out there but where I am in Wasilla there were about 9.5-10.5 inches total.
I didn't think I'd enjoy watching a construction project as much as I did this one! You both did a great job and work so well together. Congrats!
A bath house, with room for you washing machine, small wood stove might be a future build.
I'm surprised you guys haven't made a sauna LOL
I'm thinking I would install a shower curtain just to keep 10 degree air off my backside!!!
I am frozen 🥶 for you guys I can’t imagine going from showering in the cold to the house I can barely make it to my room
