I'm pretty sure Bo has his own fan club at this point, and it's easy to see why. He has the best expressions, like at around 5:33 we see him peering around at the big frozen lake with a look that says, "I don't see my bed and my wood burning stove anywhere, people." 👀😂 Your dogs are both just so cool.
😍Yep, that's exactly what makes Bo such a star. The audience can see his interior monologue in his expressions, he doesn't need any thought bubbles or subtitles to translate for us. This episode was the perfect opportunity for him to show off his finely tuned couch potato skills, too, & he nailed it!😁
I have fished that lake for years. One tip, on high pressure days and very cold days, the fishing can be very poor. Once it warms back up to teens and cloudy, fishing will be much better. I know, you have to pick your days, but that doesn't always line up. The char bite dies at sundown. Burbot do bite better in the evening at times. Moving a lot helps catch ratio, but it's not an option when camping out. Try some glow in the dark tube jigs and plastic minnow imitation. Single hook spoons work well at times. The loud ice boom when a crack happens will scare a new person to ice fishing 😅, ice is changing, your nerves will calm down over time. I need to get out there again.
A little advice from the Great White North here in Canada, to stop the freezing over of your fishing holes use a small piece of rigid foam over the hole. Make a small hole so your tip up line can go through and it won't freeze over. Love your channel love you guys from Manitoba Canada
@@mikeyjames BC here, most of the major cities are along the border here. So even a few hrs from the border. This type of life style is very common . As is the weather. It's nice to relate as you share similar experiences with weather and lifestyles.
I love the fact that you care enough about everything to clean up after other people. Let's just hope that whoever left it does the same if they find a similar situation. Hope you had a great Christmas and here's to a wonderful 2022. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
A couple tips. You should bring a shovel and shovel out the area you are going to set your tent up, then put snow around the tent tight up against it. That makes it a little more insulated and wind proof. Also I think you guys should buy a vexilar/marcum flasher for ice fishing. They are wonderful and once you use one you’ll never fish without it again!
@@thatsalt1560 I grew up with a lake in my backyard, in Minnesota. You could see their breath, it couldn't have been more than 30 F in the tent, even 40, 50, 60.... Won't melt the very thick ice. People even have ice palace campers with ice fishing wheels, that lower directly on the ice. There are entire towns, complete with roads, that appear on a very frozen lake. I got the flasher but I think underwater camera is cooler. I like seeing the actual fish staring at my lure so I know when to jig. Helps with whitefish a lot, Jack tho are just beasts and will strike quick. One time I saw a big ass perch just dive bomb the lake bed, stir up a bunch of sediment, then when it was clear again, my bait was gone! Crafty buggers.
@@thatsalt1560 Well no, not really. Ice is at least 8" thick to drive a sled onto it. You need 4" to walk on. 12" to drive a truck on it. Last winter the ice was over 26" thick here. I almost couldn't auger through it without an extension pole. You can have a fire or generator or anything you want and it will melt maybe 1" of ice at best. Once you leave and come back the next day it is frozen again. Some guys set up ice shacks or ice trailers on the ice all winter and they MIGHT get 6" of melt but there's still tons of ice. I went to an ice shack that I rented and there was a good 4" of water on top of the ice but still about 14" of ice after that.

Ice fisherman from the top of MN here. One handy way to fish outside in the cold is to grind sugar snow into your hole so when it freezes it is not hard clear ice it is a brittle cloudy ice and chips out easily. Love your videos.

I raced my 440 Yamaha snow machine flat oval track on Big Lake in 1974-75. One big ass lake. I loved ice fishing on that lake. My buddy had a cabin and a luxury 10' x 20' ice fishing hut we'd drag out with a Track Runner and spend the nights on the ice. The sounds the ice would make was spooky at first but then became soothing and would put me to sleep. Good memories.

One helpful tip if haven’t already said: Shovel snow onto the skirt around the hub to keep air from coming in. Also you may want to look into a Mr. Buddy heater. You can still use your big propane with a hose. Something I always do when ice camping is to bring a carbon monoxide. If you haven’t heard of Vexilar. I would highly suggest getting one to use while jigging. Ice camping can get crazy. You should see some that have floors and all tricked out.

I've had good luck fishing with jigs when I keep the skirt at a 90-degree angle to the line -- which is more like a real fish swimming in the water. I LOVE fishing in any weather!
Next time I would recommend shoveling the ice where the tent sits. Also I’d add a floor. Either that exercise mats that connect together or you could put a tarp down on the ice and maybe a moving blanket and dog bed for the dogs. Give you some extra comfort.
If you close all the windows in those tent things so it’s totally blackout, the holes glow and you can almost see the fish swimming by = super cool! What a great trip! Merry Christmas!
The end of this video was screaming “90’s sitcom opening credits”. I was waiting to see “with special guest stars Bo and Bandit”. Thanks for another awesome look into winter in AK!

At 32:04 love the Burbot flopping around in the background...Enjoyed fishing with you guys. It's "fishing," not "catching." Beau's face melts my heart. Thanks for taking us along.
How do you guys manage the heat in the cabin when you are out on longer adventures in the winter time? Would there be a risk of all the canned food to crack if they freeze?
I use one inch foam insolation over the tip up holes to keep them from freezing. Drill a hole in the center and cut a slit to the hole to slide out the tip up. Works great.
I love that this is how you spent your christmas, and you took us along with you. Hope 2022 is good to you both. Can't wait to see what you get up to this year.

Love the videos.. One way to keep your house warmer is pack snow of the flaps, this will keep the wind from blowing underneath, also will help keep the holes in the house from freezing
This is my most favorite Christmas video ever. I'm bummed you didn't get any fish but it really looked like a fun time. Bo and Bandit looked like they may have begged to differ, despite getting the cot! PS: love your gear, all of it. The ice fishing hut is fantastic. Merry Christmas! xo

@@SimpleLivingAlaska Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year! Thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you for them! Hello from Cold
Lake Alberta 🎄💥🐟
Best Christmas ever. I am jealous of your coffee pot. That is a real treasure. Glad to see you don't compromise on your coffee.
Beautiful family ❤️ love you guys , really enjoy spending time with you and your adventures !!
Coffee yes! The one for good measure is a must I say!
My day is made, thanks👍 New video with your family out in the wild for the night🎉
Nice Ace Ventura quote💪
Merry Christmas and thank you for your efforts in the creation process of your channel. It is nicely done and the different content from week to week is something I look forward to.Your channel is one of a handful I actually look forward to. It's cold and dark here in Northern Minnesota as well your work provides entertainment for all your subscribers on these cold dark nights of winter..I love your honesty no BS...Thanks again..Kevin.
You two are one of the best parents!! the boys gets the bed and Mom and Dad sleep sitting up! You didn't get any fish. BUT! it wasn't for lack of trying! and they must be teenages (the fish) they we're listening when Arielle was talking to them. Merry Christmas to you both
Well, you might not have got a fish, but you have a great memory of how you spent this Christmas Eve!! How wonderful!😊 Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Hope your Christmas was a good one and that your New Year's is even better. A fantastic couple, stay safe and be happy!!💖
Love the ‘Dog’ sled you have for the boys 👍👍
At 32:04 love the Burbot flopping around in the background...Enjoyed fishing with you guys. It's "fishing," not "catching." Beau's face melts my heart. Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you for another great one. Many blessings to you and your little pet family for a great and prosperous New Year from South Texas. 🎉🎊🎆💙
How do you guys manage the heat in the cabin when you are out on longer adventures in the winter time? Would there be a risk of all the canned food to crack if they freeze?
Good question
We have a propane heater that we bring in and it keeps the cabin at 60°
Haha, Eric´s dance moves at the end were top notch! Merry Christmas guys!!! X
Very beautiful snow. Wishing you and your family a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!
You’re so cute. Happy new year
Happy new year to you and your family
I use one inch foam insolation over the tip up holes to keep them from freezing. Drill a hole in the center and cut a slit to the hole to slide out the tip up. Works great.
Been binge watching videos all day, they are all so satisfying.
I love that this is how you spent your christmas, and you took us along with you. Hope 2022 is good to you both. Can't wait to see what you get up to this year.
116 comments and nobody mentioned that smoke transition @ 00:30 yet ... i see you, aspiring cinematographer! thats the second time i can see big improvements on the camera work (after the awesome drone footage started to appear a long time back)
Thank you very much 👍👍🏴
Love you guys! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :)
Love the videos.. One way to keep your house warmer is pack snow of the flaps, this will keep the wind from blowing underneath, also will help keep the holes in the house from freezing
Merry Christmas to a couple of hardy souls! Really appreciate the time and effort you take showing us your Alaskan adventures. Thank you!
My husband and I anticipated you had a relaxing Christmas. Wishing you and pets a HAPPY NEW YEAR (2022)! Looking forward to seeing more videos.
This is my most favorite Christmas video ever. I'm bummed you didn't get any fish but it really looked like a fun time. Bo and Bandit looked like they may have begged to differ, despite getting the cot!
PS: love your gear, all of it. The ice fishing hut is fantastic. Merry Christmas! xo
I don't know how they don't get moldy inside, with all that condensation with no way to dry it out!
@@lisagrafton2529 I would bring it home, open it back up for a day, and put it back in its travel bag. Sometimes I've had to do the same after hiking. It's not a big deal. Stuff lying about for a little while but it's fine
That was a very original Christmas Eve... 🎄
Happy New Year to you and all your subs.
Merry Christmas you two and looking forward to new year of adventures.
You two are great. You really do make a good pair, working together and encouraging each other, makes me jealous, wish mine did. Stay blessed
Happy New Year!
May this upcoming year bring you many of God’s blessings as you guys continue your adventure in the Northern country.
Thank you Eric and Ariel for sharing your lives with us 😊
Lol you guys looked cracked out with no sleep and that coffee lmao 🤣🤣😂😂
We love our "ice hut". We camp in it overnight on the lakes here in Maine. So much fun!
I look forward to watching y’all channel every time it’s like waiting for my favorite show Natural Geography off the grid 😀 This make my day enjoy 😊 and be safe
A no fish trip on Big Lake is very typical unless you know the exact spots to fish. I have fished Big Lake for over 20 years actually lived on the lake a couple years. Looks like you both are still learning but it sure is a lot of fun. Good luck on your future trips.
Always enjoyed seeing the two of you whatever you are doing. When you leave for a day or two who looks after the chickens and a time or two you have left the dogs home. Who cares for your animals when you are away? No fish this trip you’ve learned a little from the trip and will be back to try it again in the same area to try again.
