Start to Finish Timelapse: Building a Cozy Off Grid Cabin in the Mountains.

  • Have you ever dreamed of building a cozy cabin in the middle of nowhere? Stop dreaming and get building! Well, watch this first, THEN get building!
I built this beautiful off grid Spur Cabin 100% solo, over the course of 11 months. If I can do it, I'm confident you can, too. It's a 12 x 16 cabin with a loft, tucked away in the mountains near Red Moose Ranch, where we will eventually build our permanent residence.
This timelapse video boils the cabin build down to about 57 minutes. From digging the first hole for the foundation footings, to the final brush stroke of stain on the porch, you'll enjoy a minute or two of every step. I don't use any super-complicated or expensive tools, just the basics. And many materials that I use are leftover, repurposed, reclaimed, or recycled.
Is this a "How-to" video? Not from my view. I mostly want to inspire you to dream big, then do big. I won't claim that what I do or what I use is the absolute best, but what I do works great for me. Hopefully you'll agree that the result speaks for itself. Let me know!
As a bonus, this video offers the perfect amount of stunning mountain scenery and cool, relaxing music. Not only will you want to sit back and enjoy every minute, don't be surprised if you're inspired enough to start planning a project of your own.
Because this video is abbreviated and fast-paced, you may have a ton of questions. That's good! Feel free to ask, or simply keep an eye out for a deep dive build video that is in the works, where I'll add commentary as to the "hows and whys" of building the Spur Cabin.
Question: What is YOUR favorite part of this cabin build?
    Thanks for watching @LifeontheMoose !

My daughter was born just before the first video I saw in this series. It was the cool floor insulation system you built. I got to watch progress every week as she grew in the NICU (born at 24 weeks gestation - 1 lb, 10.8 oz). Now she’s almost 13 months old, and healthy as can be! These videos were a welcome escape from the hospital setting for the five months we were there. I’ll never be able to truly express how thankful I am to you for that.

I’m in love with this guy. He knows what he is doing. I purchased a spec house in 1978 and there wasn’t a one board, joist or corner measured or secured properly. The electric boxes had no wires so no electricity and that is just the beginning. We had to tear most everything apart and redo the place. It took 15 years since we both worked. It was difficult to sell 3 years ago because so much of me was in it! I really enjoy your work!!

Before I retired I even went out to sea alone to pocket a few extra bucks doing yacht deliveries. I hope, I sincerely hope while you were doing your spectacular work there was someone standing by with a box of Bandades. I did notice towards the end of your video, you had started useing a push stick with your tablesaw.

I'm 70 years old and in my time I have learned from Dad, Life and others along the way. At my age I often think I know how to do things. Oh I do but I also have the feeling that the older I get the more I have to learn. I say this to let you know, only by chance, I came across your video and took the chance of investing time into your project. Along the way I said to myself I would have done that different and at the very sametime I said "Harold Shut Up and learn". I followed that thought and found that yes I did learn from you and found that somethings I have learned in my 70 years have a different approach and found many of the ways you did this project to be better. Thanks so much for sharing your project and may I say that the presentation was wonderful. Often I find people just want to talk way too much and put aweful music with the void areas of the video. But you sir placed wonderful music, little speaking and put within the very reason we want such cabins is Nature. A wonderful presentation and learning I did even being set in my ways. Take off from this is to be open minded sit back watch and in the end evaluate later. Wisdom in years travelled you have shared and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I thought this would be tedious to watch, but....NO! It was SO interesting! My X was a contractor, so I was familiar with a number of the products and processes in your video. My favorite two things: the wonky/wonderful small tree limbs that made up the "railing" for the loft and, especially, that you left all the walls unfinished. That very light wood is a wonderful contrast to the finishes put on the other areas and it also makes the inside seem more open and bright, too. Thanks a bunch!!🦌🦌

    1. So much effort to insulate the house, up to 6 layers of "things" :) in walls, roof, floor - and pre-historical single glazed windows welcome heat welcome cold :)
