We assemble the tiny cabin kit in complete silence... almost!
This special edition episode is a beginning to end video with nothing but the sound of tools and the forest.
No Matt rambling on about the task at hand, no cheesy pop culture references or movie quotes and no music. Just you watching us work in the amazingly peaceful forest.

Thank you so much for the advice ! 😊
Wow! I was just looking to see if one could instal radiant-heat into a cabin floor, oneself, and ended up watching the majority of this over an hour long video on building and assembling an entire cabin. I'm exhausted! So much work on something so small! So my takeaway is this. I'd prefer to have extra cash on hand to have someone else, someone that actually knows what they're doing, do it instead. With gratitude, peace. It is beautiful, by the way. ❤
Thanks for watching!
The assembly is pretty straightforward - you got this :) but if you get someone they should be able to do a good job!
Great video guys ! Those packages for cabins are pretty cool I've seen a few go together looks nice but not really made for cold weather unless you frame & insulate inside, Lots of help & teamwork it came together pretty quick :) 👍
Thanks for watching!
Yeah. They are marketed as ‘3 season’ cabins.
Our coldest night so far was about -1c. It stayed around dropped to about 11 inside by the morning.
@@mattandmouse Hey that's not bad, Very nice for a summer cabin at the lake :) I had got a price for 6inch lock together & it was a little pricy for me a i just stick built well still building & adding on always stuff to do at the homestead "
We looked a number of options and with the sales and discounts at the time, this one made sense. But I hear you, I’m looking down the road at our full cabin build and I need to get saving!!
I would say its not great in summer sun either. I built a 2x4 bunkie, before I insulated it, it was a hot box. After insulating, it feels cooler than outside.
I bet you wish the build went as quick as this. Still a fantastic job. 😅
It’s really interesting to see the build over time. During the build is seems so slow, but really, we’ve done so much work on it already!!
Your videos keep getting better and better! Well done folks!
As do the bunkies ;)
Thanks David!
First time watching your channel. Very enjoyable video so I scribed. I do hope you will sit down and tell us what you think about the build and how it holds heat in the winter. Looks great you did a very nice job.
Thanks for watching!
Yes, we will do a follow up video; we have some about the interior and will bet testing it out for winter use this year.
Stay Tuned! 😀
But but but...we LIKE the cheesy pop culture references! 😂 Will watch in full later. Promise! 😁✌️🇨🇦🌷
Hahaaa… yeah, me too. I should keep a list and make a bingo card :)
@@mattandmouse you definitely need some Matt and Mouse wear with all your references. 😜👍
I considered ordering some ‘mouse ears’ merch… but then I thought about Disney lawyers…
LOVE the silence, details and beautiful setting... I was wondering if you happen to know of land for sale on the lake/river I think I saw on your video ? Do you have a main road with year round access and plowed ? I don't want to "stalk you" 🤣but it is difficult to find nice land like yours...
@@Will-bm5cw thanks for watching!
It took us a few months of constant searching - but we found that to get something even remotely affordable, we had to travel north and quite far off the ‘beaten path’. We also had a couple of realtors in different areas sending us leads on potential sites, regularly scouring Craigslist, kijiji and road trips for ‘for sale by owner’.
It’s a lot of effort but it’s worth it for the quiet. Good luck in your search!
Hey guys, excellent video. A couple of questions: what was the R-value in the roof insulation and how many days did it take you to put it together in total from the platform up
Thanks for watching!
The roof has two layers of R5.5 making R10 plus the minimal layer of pine boards.
We’ve found that in -1 degrees C, with the tiny cabin heated to 19 degrees C when we went to sleep, in the morning it had dropped to 12 degrees C. So not too bad. I think our ‘insulation weak point’ is the walls now which are 2” thick spruce.
Total assembly of the kit was 2 days for foundation platform, 4 days for the kit and another 2 for the insulation and metal roof.
@@mattandmouse thanks for the info greatly appreciate it. 😀
Seriously fascinating guys. I love this! Been so busy so trying to watch in bits and pieces. Ill be back in the AM with my coffee to finish. Awesome!
I think this is the longest video we’ve done. But I wanted to showcase the entire build. That being said… I think my laptop was smoking by the time it had finished rendering the episode 😂
12k views guys! 🥰😁🤟
I know right!!
It’s a really good visual of the build so far and how much we’ve done this year.
(It’s so easy to get lost with the day-to-day life !)
What was the permit process like? Or were you allowed to build it because the square footage was small?
This little thing is under the permit limit. If you happen to check BunkieLifes website they have most of them under most municipal limits but also have some bigger ones now.
I think the foundation is going to
Sink over time..
Yes, that is a concern. We’re monitoring it regularly.
Hopefully it won’t be an issue before we move it to build the main cabin.
Ya. Agreed. I think the leveling would have run/shifted too from all the heavy work / hammering and movement after and while building the cabin on top of it.
Each foundation point should be into the ground, cemented and then the provided base plates on the cement.
But still a great video and great job. Like❤
is this for sale
@@user-jr1ju3un9b sorry no - mine is not. But if you go to the Bunkielife.com website you can get your own direct from the manufacturer.
It sure won't be cozy when the Canadian winter kicks in, unless you burn half of the nation's forests.
We outfitted it with a diesel heater. So far it’s been tested to -11c and pretty comfy. I’ll let you know how it performs this winter in the colder temps n
Stop calling it a cabin. It's a storage shed for lawn mowers and weed wackers.
Those purlins are well over cooked 🙁
