Fun Fact: This was one of the first projects for Eric Goldberg, who went on to be an animator at Disney, including working as a supervising animator for the Genie from Aladdin, and even directing films like Pocahontas and Fantasia 2000.
This movie is fun, charming, creative, and bland all at the same time. I love character based stories and at first it does feel like that and to be fair half of the strange characters like the greedy are in the raggedy Ann story and an idea of seeing crazy things without knowing is sometimes fun. Though, I have heard it was rushed and the director after the old one got sick, couldn't cut some things and they were rushed and yeah one can tell. But it has positive charm that just makes one smile and this not nostalgia because I never saw this when I was a kid. Ann and Andy's relationship is nice as brother and sister even though it is simple. And I can understand why animators didn't want scenes cut because well they are awesome and it was great experience to see. But I do wish I saw how Babette (can't spell her name) became captain or even actions of the other toys while Ann and Andy are gone and Marcella noticing her toys gone or even cut a few songs because you can tell Joe ruspa gave up at the King's song by ripping off it's not easy being green. I would give this movie a C+ because I'm glad I saw it and don't mind seeing it again because of it's charm but there are some things that would have made it a much stronger character based story than in it is now if the director, animators and song writer, came to agreement.
When I was very small (before even pre-school) I loved this movie, but there were elements that unsettled the Hell out of me. The Camel, especially in the scenes where he's following the "mirage" of his family, with the eerie singing and such. There was something about it, for me at that age, that stuck with me a lot. I had intense separation anxiety as a toddler and the first nightmares I can ever remember having involved being left behind by my family, so I think that's where it comes from. I just wanted him to catch up with his family, and I was only partially satisfied that Ann and Andy sort of "adopted" him in the end.
In Richard Williams' defense, he ran outta cash before he could fully finish the film, like how he did with The Thief and the Cobbler. Who knows, maybe THIS'LL get a Re-Stitched Edition, or something.
Full Voice Actor List Didi Conn: Raggedy Ann - Mark Baker: Raggedy Andy - Fred Stuthman: The Camel with Wrinkled Knees - Niki Flacks: Babbette - Marty Brill: King Koo Koo - George Irving: Captain Pirate Guy - Arnold Stang: The Captain's Parrot - Allen Swift: Maxi Fixit - Margery Grey: One Twin Penny - Lynne Stuart: Another Twin Penny - Helen Gallen: Susie Pin Cushion - Mason Adams: Grandpa - Sheldon Harnick: Barney Beanbag, Socko - Joe Silver: The Greedy - Alan Sues: The Looney Knight - Paul Dooley: Gazooks - Clarie Williams: Marcella - Joe Raposo: A Bus Driver
57 Year Old James Bond In that video, Even he thought this was Bat-Shit insane, I sometimes like to think that Richard Williams was going about crazy while trying to fund The Thief and the Cobbler.
I genuinely LOVED the film. Even had the LP soundtrack way back when. Favorite character? The Camel, and his song Blue is quite good, IMO. The whole bit with the Greedy is the most amazing piece of animation I've even seen, it's just so fluid in its execution. Now I f I could just find a copy of the film to go with my copies of Alice and Yellow Submarine!
Are you nuts the songs are the best. They are all different and catchy and just...what!? Also Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers is low key the most romantic song I’ve heard in an animated film and it’s sung by siblings 😂
+NicolasthePikachu it's such a shame the animation in this movie is gorgeous to look at, i heard this movie sucked (at least as a musical) i've never seen it though
George S. Irving, the voice of the Pirate Captain in this movie, also voiced Heat Miser in Rankin Bass's "The Year Without a Santa Claus" and "A Miser Brothers' Christmas".
Thanks Gooseworx and The Amazing Digital Circus, now I can't get No Girl's Toy out of my head. I get it. Some of the other songs are pretty weak. Let's all agree that the animation is GLORIOUS.
This came out when I was in junior high. I was aware of the movie, as I had seen the TV ads. I didn't actually watch it until it was on RUclips. What made it stick in my mind all these years was my Speech teacher. She gave a example of a how-to speech by talking of her sewing projects, which was her hobby. She had sewn a number of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and showed us her recently completed pair.

Animat said anyone who watches Raggedy Ann and Andy would leave with a favorite character. My favorite is the camel with wrinkled knees. Not only does he have a backstory that makes me want him to have a happy ending, but just his song about feeling blue is emotionally comfortable. I also liked seeing Raggedy Ann and Andy ride him like a horse. And yes, the beginning of the movie was somewhat boring, but once we got to the pirate ship chase, I started to chuckle at the funny moments. As for the penny dolls, I really did not mind their outbursts of song. Okay, I will say that I like this movie. I'd rather watch this than The Thief and the Cobbler, that's for sure. But I would not want to miss Who Framed Roger Rabbit for this.
I really liked the Camel, too. And the scene in the end when Raggedy Ann and Andy hug him and say that he'll never be alone again, is very sweet and touching.
i love it cause its a childhood favorite of mine... also? its like a fever dream that a child would have.. or what they imagine goes on at night in the dark outside..
I remember renting this movie from my elementary school's library on vhs, literally all I would remember were Raggedy Ann and Andy (mostly 'cause my mom actually has real dolls of them) the camel, and the Greedy (that thing I remember unsettled me more than how much everyone else says the Pink Elephants screws them up), literally nothing else I remember from it ._.
Ah, the Thief and the Cobbler! The "Recobbled cut" is a true feast for the eyes! Also, the Greedy right here has outstanding and creative animation, it blows my mind. Imagine the difficulty of give life to sweets!
I've never been crazy about this movie. It creeped me out, and as I got older, I was really irritated that, although the Captain kidnapped Babette and acted creepy towards her, he was the one the toys felt sorry for, and later Babette even apologizes for causing trouble. Not to mention Ann is a total dingbat in this movie--when Greedy says he wants a sweetheart, Ann blabs, "Well, I'm just a ragdoll with a candy heart--" and she and Andy almost get eaten because of it. NICE GOING, GENIUS. ...That said, this was a good review, and objectively, the movie is one of the better "What the fuck is happening" films.
I love this weird little movie. I think it's perfect for children that are sick of tired and formulaic animated movies, much like how I was. Imagine being a cynical little kid getting sick of how animated movies are turning out and then discovering this one day when it airs on the Disney channel. Even with its flaws I still like it today. Heck, maybe even more so. To me, the worst sin a movie can make is to be boring, so if you're going to make a bad movie make it as entertaining to watch as possible.
I remember watching this as a kid and I skipped the knight and king parts because I hated them. I sometimes would just watch it for the greedy as that was my favorite part. I loved this movie because even thought it was crazy it was never too intense for me.
The Pancake Reviewer Ever since The Conjuring and Annabelle (Movie). The Creepy possessed Raggedy Ann doll that the Conjuring and Annabelle movies are DEFINITELY based on now automatically comes to my mind.
The Greedy is actually an important part of the movie. It's fundamentally a quest story, in which the heroes overcome a series of challenges before they reach their goal. The problem is that they didn't integrate the overall story together to show the development of the quest.
The only thing I can really REALLY disagree on is the music, each one is memorable and I keep on going back to them. In all I don't care how many flaws this movie has, I love it so much.
this movie was so weird because the story was like... they took different stories from the original books and mashed them into one movie. which is why its like ,,, a mish mash of just confusing in the second half. i also kinda dislike how they characterized ann and andy in this bc in the books they are a lot more stronger characters and a bit less generic. plus andy fights everything. he has No Chill im surprised that they didn't make him attempt to fight more things in this film 0/10 imdb bc andy doesnt fight thigns enough worst movi evr this is a good review tho ! thank u for not just talking abt how 'creepy ' it is and actually noting the animation n shit
Personally, the only problem that i have with the animation in this movie is the proportions on everything and how it all functions in raggedy ann and andy's world. at certain parts of the film, the captain's ship would be smaller than babette in the real world and when we first meet him - then he gets out of the Snow globe and his ship is as big as a toy building. and then at the end of the film - it's back to its normal small size and what was the greedy supposed to be if this was all in the backyard in the film? and what was king koo koo's place supposed to be in the real world? But other than that, the animation for what it had to work with. is Excellent
The song sung by the blue camel is my favorite scene beautiful song and highlight of the movie, super disappointed the only discussion of this movie on RUclips doesnt even mention it
I time I seen this movie was on Mr nightmare's top 10 creepy characters, and the greedy was on the list The first time when I heard raggedy ann's voice I instantly was wanting to watch it
I remember watching this film on Halloween as a kid. Yeah, it's that creepy. In fact I thought it was a Halloween film until years later when I learned that it wasn't. :S
Personally I liked this movie but I find those two singing doll things (Whatever the heck they are) are extremely annoying. Like seriously, annoying enough to find satisfaction in watching the two of them being abruptly squashed by a giant shoe and then just yelling in comedic pain as they're being repeatedly flattened by the person's foot in there squeaky voices. You can't tell me that wouldn't be hilarious.
This movie isn't what you'd expect- but you should. Raggedy Ann & Andy media is usually based on the book series called Raggedy Ann Adventures- which can be truly strange and like you said- a lot like Alice in Wonderland. No, that's not quite what I was going for. I used to watch a youtuber called hypersonicx2.He said that as a joke every time he did or said something silly/stupid.but since he left youtube I've been saying that ever since.
For a movie that was made on a budget of only 4 million dollars, it looks AMAZING.
well i'm sure that if you adjust for inflation it's much more.
If this movie gets a DVD release they should also include 2 bonus episodes of the 1988 series
Fun Fact: This was one of the first projects for Eric Goldberg, who went on to be an animator at Disney, including working as a supervising animator for the Genie from Aladdin, and even directing films like Pocahontas and Fantasia 2000.
He also worked on "Looney Tunes: Back in Action".
Thus, a legend was born
I don't care what you say about Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers, that is my favorite song from the movie!
Same...
SugarCookie CranberrySauce agree :) candy hearts and paper flowers and the ragdolly song are my favs and the only ones I remember the lyrics to.
Same here, mate
Kieran Stark: Because it's super duper cute.
This movie is fun, charming, creative, and bland all at the same time. this movie makes The Yellow Submarine look sober.
The candy monster guy has insane animation

Mr Williams seems to have some rotten luck, when it comes to budget and getting a proper complete film out of the production, doesn't he?

Am I the only one that thinks Mickey Rooney could've voiced Raggedy Andy?
Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers was probably my favorite song. Actually any song with Andy in it was good.
Pinku Mawile
hell yea
Ironically, This was mentioned on Nostalgia Critic's top 11 nostalgic MindF@#%s
What's so ironic about that?
57 Year Old James Bond In that video, Even he thought this was Bat-Shit insane, I sometimes like to think that Richard Williams was going about crazy while trying to fund The Thief and the Cobbler.
Nostalgia Critic has seen some trippy shit.
Indeed he has, ButI seen an even Trippier movie and it was an anime movie
What film?
I genuinely LOVED the film. Even had the LP soundtrack way back when. Favorite character? The Camel, and his song Blue is quite good, IMO. Also Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers is low key the most romantic song I’ve heard in an animated film and it’s sung by siblings 😂
I absolutely LOVED this movie as a child, and getting to see it again as an adult was a trip.
One thing we can all agree on… this is better than Where the Dead Go to Die.
Isn't evry movie better?
No... There are a ton of worse movies than Where the Dead Go to Die on my standards.
Billy Willie what is worse than that hellspawn
+Billy Willie Like what?
Billy Willie what films?
I remember seeing this as a kid and holy shit my mind was blown by those animations. O.o
NicolasthePikachu One of the Animators from Warner Bros Cartoons was Gerry Chiniquy, animate this character King Koo Koo. 6:07
***** Famous WB and Disney animators Art Babbit and Emery Hawkins also worked on it.
Eli Copperman I got it from this website imdb.com.
+NicolasthePikachu it's such a shame the animation in this movie is gorgeous to look at, i heard this movie sucked (at least as a musical) i've never seen it though
+Max Powell I Guess this movie is kind of like Disney's Tangled, because they both have great animation, but terrible songs
George S. Irving, the voice of the Pirate Captain in this movie, also voiced Heat Miser in Rankin Bass's "The Year Without a Santa Claus" and "A Miser Brothers' Christmas".

I agree! Andy is such a little jerk on the surface. He's charming as heck.
I really liked the Camel, too.
And the scene in the end when Raggedy Ann and Andy hug him and say that he'll never be alone again, is very sweet and touching.
I love your reviews and I knew this would be next.

Toy story but when I'm stoned

Please tell me I'm not the only one who knows about this movie because of the Nostalgia Critic.
No, your not the only one. I actually watched the movie after Nostalgia Critic talked about it.
I only know about this movie because of him.
RAGGEDY ANN SCARES ME!!!
I did at first. But I looked it up is because I recently picked up an old VHS Tape with Two Raggedy Ann Cartoons
No your not i know i t
Oh the 1970's, where all Movies and their creators were on LSD.
Hey look, it's Annabelle! You know, that movie that has the creepy doll from The Conjuring? Yeah, the real life doll is a Raggedy Ann doll :P
I literally just could NOT stop thinking about Annabelle when I saw this.
Annabelle is not scary and uncreative.
Loved this movie as a kid, but ADORE it now with a little bit of ganja.
Ah, the Thief and the Cobbler! The "Recobbled cut" is a true feast for the eyes! Also, the Greedy right here has outstanding and creative animation, it blows my mind.

I remember watching this as a kid and I skipped the knight and king parts because I hated them. I sometimes would just watch it for the greedy as that was my favorite part. I loved this movie because even thought it was crazy it was never too intense for me.

the songs "weakest part of the film", "bland" ?
Did we watch the same film ?
My review:
Story 6/10

I actually liked it!
(Bleep) you!

this is a good review tho ! thank u for not just talking abt how 'creepy ' it is and actually noting the animation n shit
This movie is weird nonsensical bullshit.... but I love it! XD
That movie's a childhood favorite

Called it! I loved this movie =^)
What is it
On the "Where the Dead go to Die" review, near the ending I guessed that it would be the Ragged Ann movie
Ol' Gruelle would roll in his grave if he knew what they did here ;P
Who does the voice for King Cuckoo?
That voice sounds familiar...
And Leonard the knight reminds me of Mung Daal from Chowder in design
If this movie was fully animated, Marcella should have been seen from the neck down like she was in the Raggedy Ann and Andy TV series.
0:29 I really want to see that, but I just don't know where to get it.
At 10:30, insert two snipers bursting these chocolate ladies' heads off, each with a "+100 points" marker.
Well, we can guess what the camel is supposed to represent, lol.
I had The Pumpkin Who Wouldn't Smile
The song sung by the blue camel is my favorite scene beautiful song and highlight of the movie, super disappointed the only discussion of this movie on RUclips doesnt even mention it
My favorite song in the movie is Candy hearts and paper flowers
I do enjoy some trippy stuff so I may watch this one day
"WHAT'S IN THE F*CKING BOX?!"
I time I seen this movie was on Mr nightmare's top 10 creepy characters, and the greedy was on the list

I smell some pink elephants... And they're on parade. O_O
Brii H-C What an unusual view.
Well, I mean, it is kinda random. Like that one scene in dumbo...
Everything snaps.
Brii H-C Yeah I know. >u<
Actually, seeing this review kinda makes me want to watch the movie...
:)
I just realised how wrong “no girls toy” sounds
Personally I liked this movie but I find those two singing doll things (Whatever the heck they are) are extremely annoying.
Like seriously, annoying enough to find satisfaction in watching the two of them being abruptly squashed by a giant shoe and then just yelling in comedic pain as they're being repeatedly flattened by the person's foot in there squeaky voices.
You can't tell me that wouldn't be hilarious.
To the film's credit Blue is the only real good song from this film that most people remember and love.
Mitchel Anhalt I liked no girl's toy and candy hearts and paper flowers. It all depends on the person.
At least it didn't get the seal of garbage
What are the dancing twins names?
This movie came out before Toy Story was a thing
I knew this was what he was going to review.
This movie isn't what you'd expect- but you should. Raggedy Ann & Andy media is usually based on the book series called Raggedy Ann Adventures- which can be truly strange and like you said- a lot like Alice in Wonderland. The books have nowadays faded into obscurity and many have sadly gone out of print, but if you can get your hands on one they're pretty good, especially for kids.
Next time Layton movie :)
Wait, did he say his Patreon was Luna?
No relation to the animated horse princess.
Yeah get the hell out of here.
1:37 And this is what happens after you do drugs.
To be fair, if you've ever read any of the Raggedy Ann and Andy books by Johnny Gruelle, some of those adventures are easily as weird as this movie. Also IIRC (bear with me, I haven't read it in like 35 years) King Kookoo and the Looney Knight were in the book that introduced the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees.
My theory is the artists got a little too artsy fartsy in abstract symbolism in the second half of it.
What's the song at the end?
I still love this movie
this is a great horror movie
I watched this five years ago in 9th grade.
You should review Yellow Submarine
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Do an Aimat's Reviews on Mixels
Do a Review of The Pagemaster
Not gonna lie...This is some of the best 2D animation I've ever seen! XD
I *must* watch this movie sometime...
This movie is better than the thief and the cobbler
Alice and wonderland and toy story!
Can you do an animation look back on Richard William please
Ever since The Conjuring and Annabelle (Movie). The Creepy possessed Raggedy Ann doll that the Conjuring and Annabelle movies are DEFINITELY based on now automatically comes to my mind.
You should do the Felix the cat movie
Cringe Tha God He's definitely giving that the seal of garbage
Luke Perkins Why?
I like this movie even though its.... Odd
My Ratings for this film
The Story: 5/10
The Animation: 9/10
The Characters: 7/10
The Songs: 4/10
Movie Rating - 6.5/10 (Solid)
So, is this what acid feels like?
No way this is a kid movie I think it's a teen/adult movie. The camel has some type of psychedelic. Adventure Time !!
Sweet home alabama
You’ve played LA Noire, you should totally do a review of that game. I’ve played it like four times.
I used to watch the movie when I was little and I show my daughter it she really like but what about raggedy ann broadway u forgot it
Professor Layton?
Douglas Levin Yah.
Wait, is that the next review? Because that's what I've heard.
You know what, now that I think about it... It makes sense (I'm such a Baka)
Yes. I is smarts.
:)
No, that's not quite what I was going for.
I used to watch a youtuber called hypersonicx2.He said that as a joke every time he did or said something silly/stupid.but since he left youtube I've been saying that ever since.
this movie gave me nightmares, i had to watch beetlejuice after to feel better.
Digital Circus joke
