    I remember watching the VHS at my rented beach cottage when I was a kid, and honestly, I enjoyed it. I still remember the commercials after the film but before the credits.

      I mean, it was common back then for VHS tapes at the time to have previews and ads at the start and end of their tapes. Even Disney themselves pulled this off. But really? Placing them in between the moment the movie fades to black and the credits? That's just all kinds of odd

    Honestly this movie, subject matter notwithstanding, reminds me more of a Don Bluth ripoff than a Disney ripoff. Think about it, Snow White looks almost like a palletswap of Thumbelina (she at least has the same hairstyle of a long ponytail that's also kindof not a ponytail...), the owl looks like he fell out of Rockadoodle, Dom Deluise plays the magic mirror, and that sounds like Mrs. Field Mouse doing the voice of the head Dwarfelle, Muddy.

    It has such an artistic vibe that really dates it, but in a good way. This movie was very unique in the time it came out, and I mean EVERYTHING about it was unique. A unique story, an absolutely nightmare inducing villain. The designs, the (phenomenal) painted settings and backgrounds (which were scarier than other princess movies and unlike other movies in that time), and this Snow White was known as an unconventional heroine (as this was one of the FIRST princesses that had a "personality" and reacted very human) so she really stood out. She was also unconventional due to her color palette, something that sticks with us compared to all other princesses even today. It had a great moral message, and a story kids could follow. It was also so palatable, that even boys liked this movie without it feeling it was over feminized due to the great voice acting talents and actual good universal moral messages we could follow. You could say it was the first Princess movie geared towards boys bc it was the boys that ate this movie up compared to the girls (and the boys who collected the toys). Also the music was hip, fight me. lol Most I know who saw this movie love it, or at least remember it fondly, including me. I still have trouble watching it bc it literally scares the begeezuz outta me. The dragon scene in the beginning, and the Climax? Holy fucking hell. But every time I introduce this movie to my new friends (including GenZ friends) they are pleasantly surprised about this movie, I'd say it's a lost gem. And one that sticks with you.

      I thought the same, and the hooded thing looks exactly like that incredibly annoying hooded creature in Masters of the Universe. Since they thought it would be a bright idea to steal from Disney, can't say i'm shocked they might have taken a few things from an 80s cartoon.

    While Filmation was already closed in 1989 before Happily Ever After was actually released in 1990/1993, this movie did also lead to the bankruptcy of another company: First National Film Corp, the company that distributed it. So that's two companies brought down by this film's failure.

    8:21- What also worked about the character other than being very entertaining at being a hammy, card carrying villain. The reason for this is that the voice actor went all out to have this dramatic presence, which not only could give out speeches of ambitious charisma, but sometimes subtle acting and surprisingly creepy at times. This in turn makes him have more presence as a villain. The best example of this is when he arrived at the castle of the Evil Queen that shut up the goons, the genuinely low pitched shock of learning of his sister's death and the epic speech about taking command of the castle; which included rising plateaus from the ground and commanding the minions to serve him. This is followed by turning into a cool wyvern. In my opinion, that's one of the best ways to introduce a good villain. And the build up to the reveal of his guise of being a false Prince Charming unveiling to be Maliss himself, the reveal of the petrifying cloak and murder of a character with just his eyes are what I consider runner ups for that particular scene.

    I don't think these movies are that bad. I think they are really under-rated. Sure, the animation is not Disney-like, but it is decent enough. I also like their original concept of making movies that take place AFTER the fairytale plots. I can't see how some people claimed that they ripped off Disney, since the stories on which these films are based didn't belong to Disney to begin with. Should Disney sue everybody that made their own adaptations of these fairytales after them?

    ill give the film this; snow white actually does something, multiple things actually, whereas the disney version actually did...nothing at all. this one goes on an actual quest, encourages peoples strengths, helps to protect and save their lives, shows compassion and open mindedness like with the cursed prince, is pretty damn brave-willing to go somewhere dangerous for her loved one, stands up to others-even mother nature. hell the way she fights back against malice at the end, grabbing the cloak and jumping on top of him with it, that was actually pretty badass and i certainly could never see the disney version doing that.

    • @joebrat6809
      @joebrat6809 Год назад +4

      I agree, the development of Snow White was like 20 years ahead of its time, as she is much more independent in this version instead of just being a pretty damsel in distress. I'm a bit surprised that she did not know about her step uncle though, as the Royal families are typically very close to each other even to this day. His motif is also a good one, wanting revenge for his sister. I could see Tom Hiddleston absolutely assassinating this role in a remake.

  • @WillieManga
    @WillieManga 2 года назад +3

    In fact, the voice acting is quite good for most of these characters. Phyllis Diller is a surprisingly good fit for Mother Nature; Malcolm McDowell, again, is a really entertaining villain; Dom DeLuise was a delight as always; and they even had Ed Asner and Frank Welker as Scowl and Batso respectively. I have to admit, as pointless as they can be, at least they provide at least a bit of something to ease the boredom. Oh, and for Snow White herself, they even somehow got Irene Cara who sang "Love is the Reason" as well. And sadly she passed away last month. Jeez, "F" to pay respects, I suppose... :(
    Even so, that is REALLY weird editing for a VHS. As a kid, I remember seeing an advertisement for the live action 101 Dalmatians remake while WATCHING the VHS for that very movie and I was still confused at that age. As a dumb kid who noticed that strange design choice, just imagine how bewildered I'd be if I saw Happily Ever After and found out they only showed the credits after showing the bananas!

    Yeah, here's the thing- this was actually done by what was basically the *corpse* of Filmation- it was shut down in 1989 after owner Westinghouse Corporation (which would eventually become part of ViacomCBS) sold the company to L'Oreal (yes, the makeup company), who decided to keep only the library of the company. Their shutdown came a DAY before a law was enacted that mass layoffs had to be announced 60 days in advance- EVERYONE was immediately out of a job. They had NOTHING left, which is likely why it was delayed and then dumped- they obviously couldn't afford a proper distribution. Not that it would help, but still.

Obviously they wouldn't be sold when the dvd was being sold, so it makes sense it was removed.

    Actually, the movie was released after Filmation became defunct. The shadowy figure actually looks more like Orko. Why give the animation such a high score? Despite being better than what we usually see from Filmation, it's still pretty bad with all the moments of fluidity being just all over the place. The rest tends to fall under limited animation, which I'm sure wasn't used for artistic purposes. Is it really a waste of time if the movie's so short?

    Just a fun fact: this was released in 1993, the same year Disney re-released Snow White.
    I wonder now that this must have been planned, but how long did it take to produce to reach that deadline of '93? Animation takes a while, so did Filmation know Disney was re-releasing it's classic Snow White?

    Huh, now I never grew up with this movie but I did get a copy of the movie on vhs from my grandmother but I just recently watched the movie and yeah, animation is surprisingly really good, voice acting is pretty good, the end credits song is really catchy, and I can actually see this movie working if it was written betterIf it was written better maybe it could have been better, but oh well also I actually like Snow White's design in this movie than the Disney one(though they both have the same personality problems)I guess it's harmless to me, not seal of garbage worthy though at least to me; though that whole commercial thing was freakin weird!!
