...are you serious? You honestly think that just because it's NOT animated, I wouldn't even touch it...ever? Just recently, I went to see Gravity and really enjoyed it! Who's the ignorant one here again?
I’m actually surprised about who the animators are. It’s Rankin Bass at their best with the animation, but not their best with the musical “Killing off Maleficent dragon by singing Hi Ho” That was hilarious!
Even more suprising is that it was done as a joint effort with the company that eventually formed Studio Ghibli and the studio that made Neon Genesis Evangelion. So without Rankin Bass, animation as a whole would not be where it is today.
Rankin/Bass didn’t actually animate it in house, they outsourced it like they did with their other productions. The main studio responsible for the animation here was Rich Animation Studios, founded by Richard Rich, the director of this film as well as The Fox And The Hound and The Swan Princess (another Rich Animation Studios production). Some portions of this film were outsourced to a few smaller studios though.
Let's kill Maleficent, Ursula, Jafar and Scar with these songs: -Hakuna Matata -The bare necessities -Barney' theme song -The Care Bears song -Any disco song from the 70s
I don't know... I think the whole Disney adaptions thing is a bit different than this. Though I am not familiar with the source material of Disney movies like The Little Mermaid but am familiar with the source material for The King and I, I believe that Disney is trying to change the story enough to where its kind of its own story while still being recognizable as an animated movie adaption of its source material. With The Kind and I, its still essentially the same story. It just has several details changed for the purpose of (I believe) 'protecting the innocence of children' and 'not conveying values that our society doesn't follow' (referring to the major character deaths, as well as the idea of the king's multiple wives and Tuptim being given to the king as a wife or concubine from the original, respectively), since this movie was trying to market itself to children. Also, there were some details, like the Kralahome, that were changed just make it more fantastical for children as well, and a bit more Disney-like, but they just weren't executed very well at all.
1:26, not the Prince of Egypt (phenomenal movie) 2:08, actually a lot of people complained about that. But some forgive it because Rasputin (the actual person) was actually a very dark and foreboding person who helped bring about the downfall of the Romanov family
turkishvan2 Eh, it's not meant to be a historic depiction. Plus, it's based off of a stage play, and the 1956 movie which turned out to be an Anna Andersen movie.
Lada Zhdanova Thats different. Its actually understandable why Rasputin is used as a villain in the Anastasia cartoon film. The real life Rasputin ruined the lives of the royal Russian family. Its understandable of why people would think Rasputin is evil. While the crappy king and I cartoon film turned a kralaholm a real innocent decent human person with no evil backstory into a bad guy! Which is really offensive and stupid
No kidding. I think he’s an awesome villain, I admit I don’t know anything about the real guy but I always compared him to Baba Yaga, a male counterpart so to say
Not just a book. Isn't that an autobiography? Actually, I think the subplot about the prince and the servant girl was more interesting than the main plot. False, Kralahome isn't trying to be a rip-off of Scar. He's more like an East Asian version of Jafar. Interestingly enough, Master Little was actually based off of a jester who was known for his great teeth. Aw come on, that panther is awesome. To be fair, Kralahome's dragon was some kind of illusory magic. Honestly, I think The King and I would have been better as an animated adaptation of the real-life events. Considering what animation can do, that would have made for an awesome clash of cultures.
And I don’t know about Tuptim’s story other than her descendants being alive and criticizing Anna for her demise in the book. Not sure her name being Burmese (possible anglicizing a siamized name, or one of ethnic groups in Myanmar), but she is stated to be one as diplomatic gift from Burma/Myanmar.
7:10 Don't you mean an obvious rip off of Jafar from Aladdin? No seriously, the comparisons are simply unavoidable. Both are villains, dabble in the dark arts, and both have completely annoying sidekicks. The difference was that Iago at least had some good moments in the movie. P.S. Aladdin is one of my personal favorite Disney movies.
@@zackrules4797 Not only that but they have incompetent henchmen who are unashamed by their greed, prefer that the former is defeated, & anger their henchmen in the end which turns them against them and then get attacked as their defeat.
The King And I animated film is undoubtedly one my most memorized childhood programs. I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. It may not be one of the best non-Disney animated films I've ever seen like with The Prince of Egypt or The Road to El Dorado, but it does still have a place in my heart when it comes to nostalgic entertainment.
Here's my problem with your defense: it's ALREADY a musical! The script is already laid out and is lauded as a classic, even though it's adapted from a deeply racist blatant character assassination from a woman who just wanted to cash in on her fame. So at best, it's equivalent to gluing glitter onto a Monet. At worst it's glorifying the works of a bigot.
donado xie it was a joke, obviously, but you got to admit it, it was actually ridiculously correct what mat mentioned about the way they defeated the beast xp

How could the filmmakers screw up such an interesting concept and it's source material?! I wish Disney or different animation studio could make another great animated musical adaptation of the King and I.
alexis martinez they can't. After this movie failed, the estate of Rogers and Hammerstein put a ban on any future animated adaptations of their musicals.
It' kind of funny. I tend to like the movies that most critics don't. I tend to judge a movie on how it makes me feel. If I laugh at the funny parts, cry at the sad parts and I feel anxious/scared at the drama and scary parts then I know that I like it.
For me, the stupidest thing about this movie is the Kralahome's comeuppance. I mean, seriously? Tuptim was to almost flogged to death for being in love with the prince (which, in my book is a lesser offense), but, Kralahome is sentenced to spend the remainder of his days cleaning up elephant shit as his punishment for high treason and attempted regicide!?

Polarized ignorance of cinema? So, because one is a critic of animated films, he automatically only watches animated films? If you look on his channel, he did a review of "The Muppets," which was, indeed, live action.
Actually there was a romance in the orignal film. They just flipped the romance around. In the original film it was a princess and some kind of drifter or merchant Im not 100% sure since Ive never seen the movie. Some one will correct me.
Like AniMat I have not seen or read any other version to the KIng and I - But I loved this movie growing up. I think that the animation and songs in themselves were a big part of why I loved it but to my opinion this is not a bad movie.
I think I get the Disney influences I just found out that The guy who made this worked on The Black Culdren and The fox and the Hound so the director is familiar with Disney

Having a show about animated movies doesn't mean he hasn't watched any non-animated movies. For example, in one of his most recent videos (Cloudy 2) he mentions some non-animated movies that he saw (Pacific Rim, Rush, Don Jon and Gravity).
Believe it or not, I actually like the comedy and romance better than the actual story. I was actually more interested in seeing Louis being charming and seeing the elephant being cute than in seeing Anna try to persuade the King in what is right. First of all, not only was Louis only interested in pleasing Anna and doing what is right, but the elephant was so adorable, being a young child and coming out of such an unfair zoo. Secondly, because of how ruthless the king was, especially forbidding his son to marry the servant girl Tuptim, all I wanted was to scream for him to shut up. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I actually prefer the comedy and romance over the actual story. However, I do agree with Animat about the animation being beautiful and how the songs should not have gotten the visuals they had. I'm convinced that the songs are what really get all the hatred in this movie.
I find it idiotic that Diva's Musical Hell can't show her rant about The King and I (1999) and yet you can? Why is Morgan Creek frontman James G. Robinson involved with this? I think that this film should've gone directly to video instead of being released to theaters because due to extremely harsh reviews & having the misfortune of being released only a week before Doug's First Movie which is not only based on the popular TV show, but received much better reviews (even it still got (albeit only mostly) cool reviews), the movie unfortunately bombed at the box office.
Yeah, the live-action version and the Broadway musical are a billion times better than this piece-of-shit movie. By the way, am I the only one who things that this movie is what inspired Michael Bay to direct the live-action Transformers movies by focusing on the pointless subplots and not on the main plot?
I'm not going to lie, I loved this movie as a child. As with some of the other animated movies on this channel, this too is one of my childhood films. It may not be perfect in every facet, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't watch it if it was on TV.
I haven't read or seen the books and the 1956 version nether. But I've heard they were 10 times better then this, and speaking of better, Family Guy did a whole episode on The King and I and it's also better then this.
Will you consider doing all 3 of the Brave Little Toaster movies and try to emphasize the dark and creepy moments in the first one and also you might want to do a little bit of research on science of bubbles its for the third one don't worry I'll make sense when you watch them
About making this appropriate for theaters, the point of adding darker elements is to attract older audiences which they should've done instead of just pandering to kids. This is why the ratings, PG, PG-13, R, & NC-17 were invented to begin w/. I know it wasn't usual for animated films during the time it was released to be rated PG but they could've been creative.
Hey animat ... i love most of the vids you put up but when i saw the vid of cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 i felt a little sad inside because you did something that i never thought you do something like that like how you showed if it was bad or not in the begining. :(
Speaking of Don Bluth : Fox sugest an animated adaptation of The King And i before he decited to make Anastasia but he was not intrested in it. I still think either he or the Disney Animated Company would make a waaaaay better version.

could you review Batman Mask of the Phantasm, as well as other batman animations. you won't be disapointed
I'm not going to lie, I loved this movie as a child. As with some of the other animated movies on this channel, this too is one of my childhood films. It may not be perfect in every facet, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't watch it if it was on TV.
It airs on TV?
I haven't read or seen the books and the 1956 version nether. But I've heard they were 10 times better then this, and speaking of better, Family Guy did a whole episode on The King and I and it's also better then this.
could you review the theif and the cobbler
unfortunately this is the only version of king and i i know too
Animation and character design looks nice here. I may watch the film, maybe it wont be too bad. Even though I'm not into these The King And I things.
Will you consider doing all 3 of the Brave Little Toaster movies and try to emphasize the dark and creepy moments in the first one and also you might want to do a little bit of research on science of bubbles its for the third one don't worry I'll make sense when you watch them
wait, which movie is next?
Fyi, the movie of king and i is extremely controversial in Thailand. (I dont know whether the animated one was banned or not).
Wonder What AniMat's Next Review Is. I'm at a loss. Does anyone know what it could be?
About making this appropriate for theaters, the point of adding darker elements is to attract older audiences which they should've done instead of just pandering to kids. This is why the ratings, PG, PG-13, R, & NC-17 were invented to begin w/. I know it wasn't usual for animated films during the time it was released to be rated PG but they could've been creative.
I'm getting the feeling that the next movie is going to be the south park movie.
I am like you and saw this movie first before the actual play or the other movie made in the 50s. I watched this as a child.
watership down?
It's probably going to be grave of the fireflies Since he mentioned war and "not for kids".
I love animated musicals, but I don't ever want to touch this piece of crap!
I wouldn’t want to touch you piece of crap.
Is the next review going to be the "Graveyard of the firelies" ?
Great vid
That is way worse than I remember it being as a kid.
Hey Matt, what's up, James A. Miles AKA Jamie Whales here.
Wondering if you watched my "Twice Upon A Time Review.
I'm not. I know you watch live-action too. :)
I knew he would do this after I looked up bad animated broadway musicals
I hated this movie when I was little.
And for some reason all I remember about this movie was that guy who's teeth were always falling out. o_O
Thumbs up if you want AniMat to review "Sea Prince and the Fire Child" (1981) next :) !
