Warner Bros Feature Animation: A History Of Failure

  • A long video that no one asked for but here it is, you can't stop me. Warner Bros is a company well known for its library of films and especially for their iconic brand known as Looney Tunes. But, in spite of having everything in their favor, they're more known for their failures than anything else when it comes to their Feature Animation division.

I can't believe it took me this long to see this video, but this was a nice retrospective on the history of Warner Bros. Feature Animation.
Recently, I was watching some clips and moments from Cats Don't Dance, The Iron Giant and Osmosis Jones, and they helped me gain more appreciation for Warner's Feature Animation efforts (I definitely feel that Cats Don't Dance and Osmosis Jones are among the most-underrated films of the bunch).
I wonder how different things would've been if Warner Bros. had attempted to promote their animated features and had more of a chance to produce other original animated films (the concept art for "Haunted Holiday" looked really cool!).
Ah, well, at least we have the memories of WB's Feature Animation efforts (I still love Space Jam to this day; Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Cats Don't Dance, The Iron Giant and Looney Tunes: Back in Action have great cult followings; and I have fond memories of watching The Powerpuff Girls Movie growing up).
However, I'm honestly surprised that they didn't try to make Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island a WBFA film. With the amount of promotion it got for its original release, I think Warners could have utilized that approach to make it a critical and box-office success alongside Space Jam.
All in all, great video! 💯💯💯

    • @AlexThe1Menace
      @AlexThe1Menace  4 года назад +5

Yeah I actually forgot to mention that part about Zombie Island. What inspired the creation of this video was actually a conversation me and some friends had about Zombie Island and how Warner should've released it theatrically. Probably would've done really well.

    • @hamursh

@@AlexThe1Menace In my head canon, Zombie Island would have been released in theaters a week or so after Quest for Camelot and it would have made more money than Camelot with $75 million domestically and about $185 million worldwide and seeing how the movie's budget could be somewhere between $15 million to $35 million it would have served its numbers pretty well. Sure it may have been overshadowed by Mulan but at least it would overshadow Camelot and its video release would be even BIGGER! Its theatrical marketing campaign would be as big as Space Jam.

The first movie actually released in the Renaissance era of animation by WB was actually the 1991 film The Nutcracker Prince. It was a *VERY* limited release, and they eventually lapsed the rights- by the late 2000s, it was one of the last releases by GoodTimes Home Video. Not much of note with the film, just the typical Nutcracker story, though the prince IS played by Kiefer Sutherland (yes, the lead of 24.)
And another likely reason for their failures- they picked the WORST possible times to release.
Mask of The Phantasm- came out when films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Sister Act 2 were big
Thumbelina- same week as the successful Mighty Ducks 2.
Troll in Central Park- didn't even matter, they basically just crapped that one out
Cats Don't Dance- a week after Liar Liar, plus the same week as another kid property, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie
Quest for Camelot- a week after the much-promoted Godzilla
The King and I- ironic enough, *two* other WB films, Analyze This and True Crime, outperformed it
Iron Giant- came out when The Sixth Sense was utterly dominate, and they spent a majority of advertising on Wild Wild West- which ironically came out the same week as South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, which due to the ownership structure of the channel at the time, WB distributed overseas
Osmosis Jones- same week as the anticipated American Pie 2, plus films like Jurassic Park III and the Planet of the Apes reimagining were still strong
Powerpuff Girls Movie- THE SAME DAMN WEEK as Men in Black 2
Looney Tunes: Back in Action- against a damn murderer's row, including Lord of The Rings, The Matrix Revolutions, Elf, The Cat in The Hat, and so many others.

I agree with the greatest director WB ever had, Chuck Jones - Space Jam was TERRIBLE. It got the characters all wrong, it was like Warners didn't even know their own cartoons. One interesting fact: The one single reason why Batman: MOTP didn't go well at the box office was mainly the lack of marketing and promotions. WB tried their best to give the film a huge profit to advertise by using their budget but there were no advertising being mentioned (since the WB executives ran out of ideas) like billboards or merchandise and the only two things we ever got is the poster and trailer, that's it! It is also caused by a rush production at the time (usually each animated film takes either 2 to 4-ish years to complete but this took around less than a year to finish it) when the film was already green-lit.

Sorry for the long delay but hey I got it out before the month ended at least. I've been working on this for over a month and a lot of things kept getting in the way of me finishing it like college and the recent Spider-Man game but also just the video itself. It was originally going to be a lot longer as I recorded over 30 minutes worth of dialogue but I ended up trimming a lot of that out to save me time as well as to make the video have less filler (like most of the opening pre-history stuff got cut). My voice might sound a little tired or worn out at some parts but that's what happens when you're not used to recording yourself in such a tone for that long. I would've rerecorded some of those lines again but I felt that if I did that some other day when my voice wasn't as tired, it would've sounded tonally inconsistent.
Anyway, hope you guys tolerate my boring ass voice for this long and hopefully, you'd be willing to stick around for what I have planned for October.

They were Sucsessful In 1993 with Denace the Menacce and two other Films. 1994 (Just One Later) Was one of their worst Year of Box Office Bombs ever. However Later on after space jam, Quest for Camelot Failed, later also king and i and Iron Giant Failed Due To Poor Marketing and Opening Sales but later became Sucsessful on tv. Heck, The Producer of Iron Giant Didn't even wanted the WBFE logo on his movie Becuase of their most failed movies. Their Biggest Successfull movie was Cats and Dogs, Wakko's Wish, Free Willy, Shiloh (It did Okay) And Space Jam. But Finally they Died with the Release of Laura's Star in 2004. And The logos were Completely Removed In 2007. Only to be seen for one more time in 2009.

They said the crew and animators that worked on Space Jam didn’t like Chuck Jones involved on the project nor his opinion on how he felt about the plot. The Warner Bros security guards escorted Mr. Jones off the studio property that same day. But in my opinion I’m glad Chuck Jones wasn’t involved on the Space Jam movie project. It would’ve been the same repetitive shit he was doing back in the 1950s. Because if you go back and watch all of the Looney Tunes shorts he worked on you can definitely see the similarities in each one. But yeah Warner Brothers are ran by idiots. Look how they fucked up the Superman franchise in the 1990s with Jon Peters suggesting the Superman Lives script about a scene where Brainiac has to fight some polar bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude. And then he suggested to Kevin Smith, the writer and director of Clerks & Mall Rays, to include a giant spider in the climatic battle scene. And don’t get me started how they let Teen Titans Go! stay on the air and have so many episodes currently being played 24/7 on Cartoon Network.

The only movies I saw were Space Jam, Looney Tunes: Back in Action and The Powerpuff Girls Movie, all of which I do love, but God, I can't believe not many of their movies did well! Just what's up with that?! How can they not have ever boosted the marketing?! 🤷‍♂️ But even so, at least Warner Animation Group made up for it with The LEGO Movie, one of my favourite movies to this day. And I'm happy to check out more of those classics, particularly The Iron Giant and Batman, but not The Quest for Camelot.

Dude thank you for pointing out Nostalgia Critics’ crybaby bitchass on him shitting on Space Jam. I know that’s the one video that started his major rise in the RUclips community but how many times do I have to watch a video of him/Doug/NC bitching about how bad he thought Space Jam was. It’s like, “Okay. You didn’t like it. These isn’t your favorite version of the Looney Tunes. But not everything that requires change is going to be pleasing to everyone.” I know what the movie is really about but it’s a smart move that Warner Brothers made first hand. Not too many commercials can be converted into a movie like Space Jam. I mean Jake from State Farm is only good as a commercial. If Disney greenlit that into a film whereas Jake is just selling car insurance then it would be boring and be a commercial box office bomb. It if he teams up with The Avengers then it might okay, not great nor good, but ehh if he’s the main focus. But let’s be real if you add Captain America and Iron Man in your movie then it’s straight up a Marvel movie. But I also loved this video essay that you described about the birth, date, and resurrection of Warner Brothers Family Entertainment/Animation Studios.

Lego Movie is so overrated. I went to see that movie in theaters, and the more I went through that film, the more I hated it. It was so loud and annoying. Thank god Big Hero 6 and Dragon 2 came out that year.
