Spyder Soup I believe Joe Dante, the director, is friends with Spielberg, who produced the show. He could have known they existed. Also, they used an old billboard for Warner Bros. animation that appeared on the DVD, which not only featured the Looney Tunes, but also included Hanna-Barbera, and 90's Spielberg/Warner Bros. cartoons, which yes, included the Warner siblings.
Sheesh! Never knew _Back in Action_ was under a lot of pressure. If it reached its full potential it would have been as much of a classic as _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_.
No, a classic would be the greatest crossover battle of the century: LOONEY TUNES (WB) VS SILLY SYMPHONIES (Disney aka Mickey Mouse cartoons): DAWN OF ACME, AGE OF DOOM, CIVIL WAR OF TOONS, The battle to conquer all of Hollywood. It can also be the perfect satire on how all studios care about money. I mean look at how controversial Disney and Warner Bros have gotten today, ruining mainstream franchises and how cancel culture ruins something that was at first good, now becoming a joke. Yeah, Hollywood's really just a joke and this would be a good way to show it.
@@osmanyousif7849 You do raise a point about cancel culture. What I'm hoping for is the rise of indie studios to the point where there are allowed as better stewards of the classic IPs.
I kinda liked Back in Action. It is sad that they didn't give Dante more freedom because he would make an AMAZING Looney Tunes movie, that guy is like a old definition of an "fanboy". It is also sad that Warner send this movie to die at the box office. However I did enjoy all the references and it was pretty loyal to the Looney Tunes style.
well it was basically WB taking revenge on Dante for turning Gremlins 2 into a parody of TV and pop culture and how said franchise failed because of the diffrence from the first film.
@GreenMushroom25 It wasn't intended to "die at the box office." (For that matter, I don't think any studio releases a film with the intention of it bombing.) They didn't want to put it up against the juggernaut that was Finding Nemo (which, ironically, is mentioned in the film), so they postponed the release, but that proved to be equally bad timing, as it was released the same time as Elf and The Cat in the Hat. I kind of wish they'd waited until the summer of 2004 to release it, because I don't think a whole lot of hugely successful family movies came out during that time; the only summer 2004 films I know of are Two Brothers and Fahrenheit 9/11.
That was done on purpose as an inside joke. Hanna-Barbera was always known for having cheap animation, and that was the filmmakers' way of taking a stab at Hanna-Barbera.
Loony Tunes Back in Action is my all time favorite childhood film! I loved all its breaking the fourth wall elements and all its random references, especially the whole art museum scene!! I've watched it more than anyone should watch a single movie and was so surprised when I read how much of a box office flop it was lol
I really enjoyed BOTH films! This was also surprisingly interesting! I actually didn't know that it was based on a commercial!! Personally! I loved Billy West as Bugs, you also made a pretty good point with Lola! XD

Yes ,Cartoon network is fondly remembered by those who grew up with it, but it's not made to appeal to all ages like Disney films, Hanna Barbera or the classic looney tunes. IT's designed just for kids with most shows containing adult jokes for parents watching it for whatever reason. Sorry to say, I am NOT looking forward to this lookback
That's right. Bugs Bunny challenges the aliens to a basketball game because the aliens were little guys and The Looney Tunes characters thought they were pushovers. The aliens stole the talents of five of the NBA players in order to have the upper hand. Of course everyone knows the rest of the story.
I really enjoyed Back in Action a lot more than Space Jam if I were to be honest. I really enjoyed watching each part of the lookback week by week that now I can easily binge this whenever I want to.
I agree. I remember watching "Space Jam" when I was a kid and enjoying it, but looking back at it now as a 21 year old man, I don't like it that much. The reason why is because I agree with what Warner Brothers animation veteran Chuck Jones said about the movie; I think that it's an insult to the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies material because had it been true to the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies material, then Bugs Bunny wouldn't have needed help from a legendary basketball star or any of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies characters to help him beat the Monstars and he would have beaten them all by himself with his own clever brain and plus it wouldn't have taken him the whole movie to beat them either and Porky Pig wouldn't have said things such as "I think I just wet myself". In the original classic Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons made in the '40s, '50s and '60s, Bugs Bunny could beat the toughest enemies all by himself with his own clever brain in 6 minutes. He did it to The Gorillas Team in "Baseball Bugs", Crusher the Wrestler in "Bunny Hugged", Toro the Bull in "Bully for Bugs", Nasty Canasta in "Barbary Coast Bunny" etc. Therefore, like Chuck Jones, I think that "Space Jam" could have been a 6 minute Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoon where Bugs Bunny beats the Monstars all by himself with his own clever brain, just like he did to The Gorillas Team in "Baseball Bugs". I'm sorry but I don't like "Space Jam" that much and I think that it's an insult to the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies material. Watch "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" instead.

As a kid, I loved Space Jam; when Back in Action came out I could take it or leave it - I'd forgotten about it as fast as it was over. Now however, I'm thoroughly underwhelmed by Space Jam but I LOVE Back in Action!
One interesting thing about Space Jam is a lot of animators who had previously worked for the studio StarToons on Animaniacs did most of the animation.
Oh man, I'm so hyped for the next Animation Lookback being Cartoon Network Studios (or just Cartoon Cartoons from the sound of things). Perfect timing too, given the channel will be 25 years old this year. So this will be quite an interesting journey in the near future.
Despite the critics and especially Joe Dante, I love Space Jam! :) Its part of my childhood and I love the song "I Believe I Can Fly". Looney Tunes: Back In Action is considered one of my first movies that I saw when I moved to Arizona. I actually thought that movie wasn't that bad, but I love Space Jam more. It has been a year since Joe Alaskey passed away. I love him as the voice of Daffy Duck, especially in the show Duck Dodgers.
Even though Space Jam has a ridiculous plot and in your face product placement, it's still a guilty pleasure for me. I loved it as a kid and lets be honest, the soundtrack is great.
Funny thing about those 2 Looney Tunes movies is Space Jam have negative reviews but was a success, but Back in Action have positive reviews, but was a box office bomb.
I remember actually enjoying Looney Back in action I never was the biggest fan of Space Jan Though it’s just very surprising how badly Back in action bombed in the box office but Space Jam was a hit for some reason because everyone wanted to see a basketball player be in a movie with cartoon characters.
*MISSING BIT OF INFORMATION* And with that role in The Looney Tunes Show, not only did they give Lola a new personality (a very funny personality to boot) but they also gave her a new voice going to Kristen Wiig, Lola also got her own direct to DVD film "Looney Tunes Rabbits Run" where she is voiced by writer Rachel Ramras.
Space Jam-a technical marvel that doesn't exactly do justice to the world of Looney Tunes. Back in Action-Not perfect, but if I were to make a Looney Tunes movie, it would probably be similar to that. BTW, 16:38 just made me burst out laughing. Seriously, if any of those Thanksgiving 2003 movies should have been a flop, it should definitely have been that horrible excuse for a Cat in the Hat adaptation.
Being a guy that grew up in the 90's I was more fond of Space Jam then I was with Back in Action. No one gives Space Jam enough credit where it's due. I mean it was the 1st original Looney Tunes film without the major animators and the usage of Mel Blanc as majority of the voices. Sure they may have tried to get his son to do it, but I'm glad that they didn't. Not to knock off Noel Blanc, as he is his father's son, but there were much greater talent at the time of Space Jam and I'm glad that they recruited some of the best voices at the time to replicate their own flavor of the Looney Tunes and introduce them to a modern day audiences. This film was like a climax thanks to the Nike/McDonalds commercials of the 90's and the STeven Spielburg's animated shows of the 90's that replicated the moments of the Looney Tunes past. Also the NBA All-Stars of the 90's is a major contribute to the film. Had they made a better plot to the Back in Action film, then it would have fare better to the fans and the audiences.
And Kath Soucie has done Lola in Tweety's High Flying Adventure and in some Looney Tunes video games. Lola on The Looney Tunes Show is voiced by Kristen Wiig. Lola in Looney Tunes Rabbits Run is voiced by writer Rachel Ramras. I have no idea who voiced Lola in that one episode of Wabbit.
Kath Soucie has now voiced Lola outside of Space Jam in the New Looney Tunes, formally known as Wabbit. Her personality would be more like how it was in the Looney Tunes comic books where she was smart and competent but also looney and comedic. Although, instead of being a pizza delivery girl that delivered pizza to mythical creatures, ancient spirits, and deities, she would be known as "Lola, Auntie of Dragons" where she cared for dragons and would punish any who harmed or stole them.
I honestly don't get why so many animation purists hate on Space Jam. It helped introduce me to Looney Tunes when I was little; while I was already somewhat familiar with the characters, I never connected with them in the same way before the movie. I'm sure many other people born in the early 90s (like I was) would tell you the same thing if you asked. Space Jam may not have been a traditional Looney Tunes project, but IMO that's what makes it all the more enjoyable. Is it that terrible that it, along with Cartoon Network, helped introduce the Looney Tunes characters and shorts to a new generation? Because if anything, that is the film's greatest triumph. And Lola? I actually think she's a pretty decent character. While I agree with those who say she shouldn't simply be a love interest/female counterpart for Bugs, I think she would make an excellent standalone character. In fact, I hope that WB will someday make a standalone Lola cartoon short in the style of earlier Looney Tunes from the classic Termite Terrace era (one that looks and feels like Lola existed as a character during that time.)
I would have to say, that Animat is going to give us the characters from Cartoon Network. If you guys are wondering what music was playing while Animat was holding his phone, it was from the beginning of the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays intro. I hope Animat will talk about The Powerpuff Girls.
About 10 years ago, I always thought Back In Action was better than Space Jam because it was much more faithful to the Looney Tunes. But years later, I realized that there has never been a movie experience like Space Jam. Combining these 3 elements that you mentioned shouldn't have worked, but they found a way to make it entertaining. I still like Back In Action and think it deserves more attention than its getting, but I think I like Space Jam a little more now for its unique way to stand out as a movie.
I have decided that I like Space Jam better than Looney Tunes Back in Action. First of all, I already had a guess for how any movie can mix Looney Tunes, Basketball and Aliens. This is apparently a combination of three of the most popular projects to watch on television: cartoons for children, sports for adults and science fiction for teenagers. Secondly, I like how this is the first project, movies or television, to star Lola Bunny. Now Bugs can finally have a legitimate romance partner. That, and Lola actually looked somewhat beautiful playing those games (cat purring). Lastly, I am actually conflicted on which live-action/animation hybrid I like more: Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Space Jam. On one hand, Who Framed Roger Rabbit is more popular, but on the other hand, Space Jam looks better for kids. My main problem with Looney Tunes Back in Action is that there is too much cruelty going on, especially in the beginning. Daffy fired just because he is less popular than Bugs Bunny? That is just not called for! Needless to say, I do not like Kate Hughton. She is despicable and unlikable. Not to mention the writing is pretty questionable. The Looney Tunes cameos are just fine, but the villain's motivation is just weak!
To whom it may concern, consider the Lola Bunny history mixed with the history of Space Jam is her profile, so it's a honorable mention in a honorable mention.
I really enjoyed watching all of these videos and this was an awesome finale! I also remember loving Space Jam as a kid. While I'll admit it's not really that good of a movie, I still have a soft spot for it and it does have some fun moments, plus a great soundtrack and animation. As for Looney Tunes Back in Action, I think it's decent. Admittedly, it's better executed with the portrayals of the Looney Tunes and the story isn't too bizarre, at least by Looney Tunes standards. Not the greatest, but I'd still watch this one from time to time. I can't wait for the the next Animation Lookback on (kind of) the best place for cartoons.
You forgot to mention this tidbit for Scooby and Shaggy's cameo in Back in Action. Lillard was Shaggy in the 2002 Raja Gosnell Scooby Doo film and would later become the permanent voice of Shaggy after Casey Kasem died.
yeah, I kinda have to agree with you there. Billy West's Bugs Bunny sounds just too high, and it sounds more Billy than Bugs. Joe Alaskey does a decent Bugs, but I don't feel any of that special Mel Blanc-ness in Joe's Bugs. Jeff Bergman does a great Bugs though, it sounds almost exactly like Mel Blanc's Bugs Bunny. but nobody will ever come close to the original.
9:47 Oh dear Jesus, I remember that show. I only watched 10 episodes, then just stopped. I also hate how Lola basically took over the show in the second season; just about every episode seemed to focus on her or feature her heavily. I should really revisit that show someday
Hahahaha. I liked the references to the old Bugs Bunny and Road Runner movie with this entire animation look back sections with Looney Tunes. I could hear a few words of Dot from Anamaniacs so my guess is that you will be covering next the entire WB shows from the 90s that was directed by Steven Steelburg.
♪ I believe I can fly... ♫ Also, I actually *remember* Looney Tunes Back in Action :D Sure, I remember Space Jam too, but to me Looney Tunes Back in Action is just this one Looney Tunes movie that sticks with me since my childhood. :)

I happen to have a crap ton of them, with a vast majority of them on my mom's side, which little did I know when I was younger was due to her having five siblings that consist of two older sisters and three younger brothers). She died when she was my age, about a year shy of 30 to be more precise, of an accidental overdose, during that harsh winter in my area.

Cailey Gallagher What?!
WHAT????!!!!
I felt a lot of the humor in Space Jam fell flat, and Lola was pretty generic, it wasn't until after the movie that she got more of a character.
I love the movie, but I'll never say it is a "good" movie.
I personally loved both movies, but i will admit back in action felt closer to Looney tunes.
I remember actually enjoying Looney Back in action I never was the biggest fan of Space Jan Though it’s just very surprising how badly Back in action bombed in the box office but Space Jam was a hit for some reason because everyone wanted to see a basketball player be in a movie with cartoon characters.
4:43 Dee Baker does eventually return to voice Daffy.. But that’s another story.
gl
When?
@@melikaihsampson You mean you don't know?
Lola was also a lead character in Baby Looney Tunes.
13:03 Anyone Notice The Car Is Believe It Or Not Jeff Gordon's Car He Raced In Nascar During The 2000s
Hey guys, don't forget that Back in Action wasn't the only Looney Tunes film directed by Joe Dante.... *cough* Gremlins 2 *cough*
That was just a cameo in the opening logo
@@arbytv5139
Yeah but the tone of Gremlins 2 makes it basically a Looney Tunes cartoon.
I would have died to see a cameo from Tom and Jerry in the film, seeing them having a chase
Dee Bradley Baker did come back as Daffy for Wabbit nowadays
Yes he did, you're right! :D
@@hamursh It was Kath Soucie.
Space Jam is one of my favorite movies from my childhood
i loved space jam as a kid and I still do to this day
I honestly don't get why so many animation purists hate on Space Jam.
Well, space jam is getting a sequel next year, so lets see how it does
I would have to say, that Animat is going to give us the characters from Cartoon Network. If you guys are wondering what music was playing while Animat was holding his phone, it was from the beginning of the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays intro. I hope Animat will talk about The Powerpuff Girls.
+Dylan Nicholson One, it was the original, because two, at least I think so, the reboot wasn't even announced yet!
I really enjoy your animation reviews and lookbacks. Looking forward to Cartoon Cartoons!
Great videos :)
And I only have "two" word's for the Honorable mentions;
Two of some of my best (favorite) childhood movies.
Looney Tunes: Back In Action. was lot more fun for me.
16:36 don't even get me Started with that crap
10:03 A New Legacy Confirmed.
This was a lot of fun. Thanks man!
Well, you definitely got me hooked on the next retrospective. Also, dat ending line. XD
Animation Lookback: Cartoon Cartoons or Carton Network history by AniMat. Coming Fall 2017 or early 2018
or animation lookback cartoon network you may call it that's the next animation lookback.
Technically he did that with the History of Hanna-Barbera (though not including Courage or Ed Edd & Eddy)
Grant Awa i hope its cartoon netwrok as a whole since that would be great
I think it was a reference to the intro to Cartoon Cartoons
What was a disappointment. I wanted something more timeless
To whom it may concern, consider the Lola Bunny history mixed with the history of Space Jam is her profile, so it's a honorable mention in a honorable mention.
I always enjoyed these movies as guilty pleasures but i still don`t know why XD
It's all good. It's even part of being a Toonfanatic.
He should do an Animation Lookback on puppetry by people like Jim Henson, Rick Baker, Stan WInston, and more.
I still have the DVD of both of those movies.
16:29 You could have noted Brother Bear since that one was Released close to Back in Action.
COME ON AND SLAM!
4:39 dude Dee Baker voiced Daffy in wabbit
its weird how all of the animators expect Chuck Jones died in the 1990s Chuck Jones died on February 22, 2002 R.I.P Chuck Jones
I was wondering what would be done for the honorable mention, Lola Bunny or the movies, and we got both, it was great.
I can't wait for the the next Animation Lookback on (kind of) the best place for cartoons.
space jam is better than back in action
Dee Bradly Baker actually did reprise his role as Daffy in the new Wabbit season
Bob Bergen still voices Porky and Dee Bradley Baker is soon to reprise his role in the "Wabbit" series
You forgot to mention this tidbit for Scooby and Shaggy's cameo in Back in Action. Lillard was Shaggy in the 2002 Raja Gosnell Scooby Doo film and would later become the permanent voice of Shaggy after Casey Kasem died.
I love both live action looney tunes movies.
You predicted Space Jam Legacy with lebron. Nice
Personally, I would love to see Jackie chan in a Looney tunes movie.
17:03 Foreshadowed much?
Ah I see because Jerry Beck is a film historian. Good job Animat!
Looney tunes back in action came out the year i was born. I was only 5 1/2 old at the time and 17 years later, I feel old.
I think Billy West does a good job as Bugs and Elmer.
yeah, I kinda have to agree with you there.
Both Space Jam And Lonney Tunes Back In Action Are Very Good Films.
I remember seeing Looney Tunes: Back in Action at that time didn't know what a Dalek was until I finally decided to watch Dr. Who on Netflix!
My favorite looney tunes film is back in action
Can't wait to see who you explore next.
Good job Ed!
9:47 Oh dear Jesus, I remember that show. I only watched 10 episodes, then just stopped. I also hate how Lola basically took over the show in the second season; just about every episode seemed to focus on her or feature her heavily. I should really revisit that show someday
To be honest, since that the production of looney tunes back in action was a nightmare, the only person that I feel bad for is Eric goldberg.
ANIMATION LOOK BACK CARTOON NETWORK??? Love it! :)
Next is Animation Lookback: Cartoon Network! (that was the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays intro)
He might revisit the ones co-produced by Hanna Barbera first then moving on to the ones not made at Hanna Barbera. But we'll see.
18:29
...what... was that?
The End! Let the next animation look back come at its time!
R. Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly was No. 2 on the Hot 100 because Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart was the top hit at that time.
♪ I believe I can fly... ♫
Also, I actually *remember* Looney Tunes Back in Action :D
Sure, I remember Space Jam too, but to me Looney Tunes Back in Action is just this one Looney Tunes movie that sticks with me since my childhood. :)
Nikki Roessler I'll never hear that song the same way again. It was played at my cousin's funeral. (The cousin I'm referring to is the youngest of my older ones.
Coolest outro ever. Also, it's kind of a shame about Back in Action's production, cause I do like that movie. I'd just hate to be Dante.
I read somewhere that the Monstars were partially inspired by the Ginyu Force from DBZ.
12:29 Jameson as Warner Bros executive: Look Joe we love what you do, but that's an old story. It's got "period" stuff in it we don't want that! We want to re-brand our characters and we want to do Space Jam! LOL 😂😂
Damn, Tom & Jerry can't get a break with modern cartoon crossover live-action/animation hybrid films.
I always picture both space jam and Looney tunes back in action same show like take place in 1996-2003 like I was thinking Looney tunes back in action a sequel to space jam
Remember When Scoutart Stole This Video.
