I really like this movie despite its flaws. The music is fantastic, and I like Pocahontas as a character. She was the first Disney protagonist to end a film with choosing to be APART from the romantic lead, instead staying with her tribe in order to help her people.
Me too. I don't understand what is the matter with these people.
Same.
Me too, and that was why I love her ever since I was six. Which was a big deal at the time compared to other females in Disney movies.
Well that's because the real Pocahontas actually stayed with John.
@@aaronfield7899 did not
This movie may not be a masterpiece, but 'Colours of the Wind' is.
A great song in a not great movie.
MultiDannyboy89 technically it is a great movie in its own right
It was a great song, and the score was amazing too. And the animation of Pocahontas herself was so mesmerizing, especially on the hair which is so f**king difficult to animate.
true
@@MrGabeanator Yeah that song is incredible one of the most iconic Disney songs ever made!
OMG I am so happy to hear an honest and a genuinely positive review to this movie. I believe it is so underrated because of people wanting it's source material to be as accurate as reading about American history. I say view it as a movie on it's own. I feel the same about Anastasia.
Its historical inaccuracies aren't this movie's only problem though..
Oh I know, but the movie is not as bad as people usually make it out to be. If anything, I think one of the problems, is the story feels too rushed because of the time frame. Perhaps if the film was longer this problem would have been less prominent. I would have loved to see the characters more fleshed out, especially our lead characters like Animat mentioned.
It's funny that so much effort went into this movie than The Lion King, but in the end it's The Lion King that became legendary.
Because lion king was something new, Pocahontas told a story that’s been told before.
alexis martinez oh
yeah
ikr
Mackenzie Carver "lion king was something new"
Kimba the White Lion would like to have a word with you.
I personally adore Pocahontas. It's easily in my top 5 favorite Disney movies. As you pointed out, the animation is so freaking stunning, and the music is beautiful. I always ball my eyes out at the end not only because of Pocahontas and John Smith parting ways, but also because of the score. My grandmother also sang Colors of the Wind to me as a baby. So, this movie and its music has a bit of a personal value to me. But other than that, I really do love the message of Pocahontas and John Smith's love. How they were able to bring together two different cultures, and defy the odds so they could be together. They're a powerful couple, and so underrated. I'm so happy that you didn't beat this movie into a pulp like some other reviewers have. True, this isn't as great as The Lion King or Zootopia, but I feel like it deserves more attention. What it does well, like the animation and music, is REALLY done well.
I know it's not the best of the Renaissance era, I still enjoy this movie.
me too but it took a while
It's a great Disney movie top 10
It is shame to see Pocahontas not as successful as the other Disney films in the Disney Renaissance era. It had potential to be a great film if handled under the right hands solve problems what it had. I do enjoy and love Pocahontas and I love the animation and it's so beautiful and makes me feel I want to be a director one day to make beautiful hand drawn animated films.
It has big success it's just underrated as fuck but regardless a great damn movie
8:19 "The Mine Song but Stingy is replaced by Ratcliffe"
Why isn't that a thing yet?
I LOOOVE Pocahontas! The animation and songs are PERFECTION!
This is the only Pocahontas video I could find that wasn't someone tearing it up for being historically inaccurate or just making fun of it so thanks for the review man!
This is honestly one of my favorite Disney movies of the 90s.
good for you
Same here, the Voice acting the animation the songs and musical score definitely make it worth watching, the atmosphere in some scenes in particular is just stunning🙂
Okay I'm just gonna say it.
Pocahonas is hot.
More like Pocahotas, amirite fellas?
Good for you, champ.
Hell ye
Which Disney Princesses is not?
@@ClaudetteVioletta Snow White after few secs of research. Ah guess someone would apply "hot" to her and while i don't blame i just don't get how and why...
Wasn't expecting a positive review but I was actually pleasantly surprised that it actually got that rating. And I have a good feeling I know what he's reviewing next.
I guess my biggest issue with this movie is not necessarily because of the specific huge historical inaccuracies. Rather, it's because it takes a very complex and sad history and essentially treats like it was all because of one greedy guy looking for gold, and that it's all magically fixed when said greedy guy gets defeated. The real history of the interactions between the Native Americans and Europeans is much more complicated, sad, and messy than that, and it deserved a better representation. I do definitely think Disney meant well with this one. The animation is beautiful, and I love Colors of the Wind. And I do give Disney some credit for trying to present a message of tolerance, and for trying to treat the Powhatan more as actual people. Unfortunately, good intentions don't always translate to good results. Disney did a much better portraying prejudice and tolerance in Zootopia. And when you throw in some of the general story issues, like the tone issue, and some of the character issues to the pile, you've got yourself a movie I don't generally look back on as one of my favorites.
I totally get your point but it's weird : even as a kid I knew this movie was just a tiny hint on what actually happened. Like, I knew it was re-written to be seen by children, just to give them a tiny bit of the feeling to understand the bigger deal. I wasn't the smartest kid, it was more of an instinct thing (or maybe my mum just whispered "they actually slaughtered them all"?). I'll always love dearly that movie, my favourite Disney maybe, for making me think about/ understand many things about the world, differences leading to fear and hatred ... And also for showing me that, hell, your place in the world isn't related to a man you fell for.
Any information gleaned from a movie with talking trees and animal sidekicks should be taken with a grain of salt. "Pocahontas" was twelve (no romance) in 1607, and Smith's story about her rescuing him during his captivity was first mentioned in a letter to Queen Anne years later; likely a case of stretching the truth to put in a good word for her before her audience.
The real Captain Ratcliffe actually caused supply shortages for the colonists by overtrading with the natives trying to maintain good relations with them. In 1609, he was invited by the Powhatan to trade and was ambushed and captured. He was tied to a stake and slowly skinned bottom to top with mussel shells, being burned alive after having the skin stripped from his face.
Pocahontas chose to stay with the colonists following her capture in the first Anglo-Powhatan War, renouncing her father for not returning prisoners and captured arms in exchange for her. The movies actually did get people talking about the real history, but there will always be those who believe what they saw in a cartoon or come up with their own "truth" to fill in the blanks.
I didn't expect this review so soon.
I was going to say. The last classic review wasn't that long ago.
And thank you for giving this movie a decent review. I really think it's being picked on too much.
+ejl423 wait until Pocahontas 2, which fills in the gap on the John *Rolfe* love story of the plot, which the first movie ignored.
Mean either!
Well, I already knew about the two-a-month deal, but I didn't think this review would be out until the end of the month.
This is by far the best review for Pocahontas I have ever seen. So many people have criticized it for not being historically accurate (even though Disney animators have specifically said that they based this film off of the "legend" that surrounded the historic account. Not the actual event) instead of looking at it from a technical perspective. It really grinds my gears that critics criticized this film for historically inaccurate (even though it's based off of the legend that surrounded the historic account) but then turn around and praise other historically inaccurate films like Argo and Anastasia. But overall, I can't praise this review enough. To quote Jafar: "On a scale from one to ten, you are an eleven"👏👏👏
Even worse, at least Pocahontas has on its poster "An American Legend Comes to Life " whereas Anastasia had on its poster "Discover the Adventure behind the Greatest Mystery of Our Time", which means Anastasia is blatantly faking reality whereas Pocahontas is just based on a legend.
And Argo is one of the worst and most inaccurate movies ever and extremely Islamophobic
I love this movie as a kid! i give this a 10/10!
Me too.
I don't find it underrated. It was boring.
I wonder when he'll get to The Land Before Time. That is by far the only movie I've requested him to do.
I don't care what anyone says...this is one of the greatest animated movies ever made.
You're funny.
Haha. No.
I understand you don't care, but it is not.
It's his opinion and plus I agree with you this is one of the best movies. Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney princesses

Also Pocahontas was groundbreaking in being a strong and powerful female Disney protagonist.
Kate McSpadden What?

Kate McSpadden sorry. Belle beat her to it.
Kae McSpadden Belle beat her to it
Pixar: Toy Story's theme song is way better and we'll even make it win the Oscar.
Disney: Hold my beer.
Belle? Yeah real strong Stockholm syndrome
12:52 Historically accurate to John Smith's fanficton
You can argue that Hunchback has that tone issue. You have one scene with Frollo singing over his lust for Esmeralda and plans on killing her, then you have the fucking gargoyles.
AniMat can you review The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and The Swan Princess.
That would be nice!
ABSOLUTELY Hunchback!
I think he should give the swan princess a -1000/10, IT SO TERRIBLE
Jack Whitty My favorite disney movie. Hunchback that is...
Hunchback? Yes. The swan princess? Eh...
This movie was my childhood, so I'll always have a soft spot for it in my heart.
You Will Now Forever Be Known As The Person Who Hated Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs And Liked Pocahontas
BACKGROUND: "Pocahontas" marked an earthshaking change in Disney leadership. Jeffery Katzenberg left Disney during production to join Stephen Spielberg in forming DreamWorks. Some loyal Disney workers who admired Katzenberg thought he would actually come back. However, that boat had sailed. DreamWork's "The Prince Of Egypt" and "Shrek" came afterwards. And, this split from Disney fostered intense and renewed competition that revitalized animation. "Renewed" competition? The whole "divorce" to form a fierce competition... felt similar to many years earlier.., when Don Bluth split from Disney and made "The Secret Of NIMH" with his own company. At this earlier time, Spielberg had also made an impact when he then subsequently worked with Bluth on the original features, "An American Tail" and "The Land Before Time".... ...Yup.... Stephen Spielberg was the "Wild Card"....
Surf's Up 2: Wavemania next. Coming April. THIS TIME!
Another thing, Chris Etrata. now that's the third time
Oscar95451 What's wrong with Chris?
Chris Etrata People are weird. But you should sometime in the future request something good. Because requesting a bad movie all the time can be a little too far. But Mat hasn't reviewed something bad since The Wild Life I think, so you're fine.
Don't forget that Chris Etrata also send Mat plenty of Ratatoing DVDs and Cloudy 2 DVDs and one Little Panda Fighter using the Simon Howells name
Sorry. but people are pissed at you over Ratatoing and that you give all the Cloudy 2 DVDs on Christmas 2015
However, if i had money and job. I'll suggest AniMat to review both Winx Club (season 1 to season 3) and Winx Club: Secret of the Lost Kingdom movie
Thank you so much for giving this a positive review! I was beginning to worry you'd spit at it like most people nowadays! I feel so happy I'm gonna cry!
Pocahontas makes a great Thanksgiving Movie.
Let's play a game: Have a drink every time animat says "Phenomenal"
Is it bad that I find Pocahontas REALLY attractive?
ctl eurocollege Don't feel ashamed that you like a cartoon character (don't any of you correct me that Pocahontas is a Real Person). Hell, fictional characters, human and animal, are more Interesting than real people!
And to give y'all a hint, it's in my profile pic!
ctl eurocollege No! A lot of Disney animated women are drawn attractively. I definitely have a few animated crushes!
Don't feel bad about that, she's gorgeous. In fact I'll confess that I like a few animated characters that way too. My biggest animated crush is Elastigirl from The Incredibles.
So? I think Elsa's hot (lol) and I don't think it's weird
she was literally modeled after supermodels. it's all good
I love the way you speak. I'm Italian and it's not always easy understand english people talking, but you are super clear (and very funny).
'Just The Same Old Heroine...'
'I'm The Raccoon!'
Historically accurate? I think not xD
Ratcliffe, in the movie, wants secretly to become lord (or king, I don't really know). But in reality, he was sent with his crew to trade with the Powhatans, but they were too generous and started to starve. The Powhatans, seeing their fate occurring, wanted to offer them some corn, but they captured Ratcliffe, tied him to a pole, started to burn him and took parcels of his skin with mussel shells. Then he died. Happy, now?
*hears Chris Etrata's name*
DON''T DO IT ANIMAT!!!
*hears SUrf's Up music*
Wait... Mat already revi... NO!!!!!!
I think Pocahontas is pretty underrated!!! I really enjoyed the movie though it’s not my favorite in general!!! The animation I give it an A+, it’s just so beautiful and so spectacular!!! I think the songs are memorable and I think the vocal performances were great and also think that John Smith was handsome!!! Overall
Characters: 9/10
Animation: 10/10
Music: 9/10
Grade: B+
When I heard the "Savages" song as a kid I thought they said "Sandwiches. Lol.
I saw Jim Cummings at the Denver Comic Con in June 2014. I just stood there and watched from a few feet away. Wearing a yellow t-shirt, baseball cap and jeans. From comparing the movie to the historical events, I never looked at Pocahontas the same way again. But I still liked the movie
Although I am nit willing to put Pocahontas on my list of my favorite Disney movies, I do wish this movie would be getting more attention. With how much popularity it used to have back in the Disney Renaissance, it should be just as popular today as The Little Mermaid and the Lion King. Besides, when I watched this as part of my Disney research, there were some parts I actually liked. For example, I actually like the child parts of the story better. They look like they would entertain children perfectly, and it looks like they would be nice relief from all the adult material. But I will say I am also relieved that the adult parts don't go too far with their scariness. I even have a liking to Pocahontas herself. She has so much compassion for her tribe and her animal friends that it actually frightened me when she said she would die if John Smith died. I legitimately wanted her to survive for the whole movie and I wanted her to have a happy ending. This made me somewhat sad when John Smith had to leave. Do I like this movie as much as Pinocchio or The Lion King? No. Do I wish this movie could get more attention? Most definitely.
I find it coincidental that you uploaded this the day I'm at Disneyland
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron?
Surfs Up 2 is next!
Since next week, I know you're going to review Beauty and the Beast, but when's the Rock Dog review?
Rock Dog Didn't Come Out In Canada
When is it coming out then?
Is it not possible for him to come to down to the US and watch it or are there rules about that?
AngelWorks Productions it isn't coming out for Canada at all
What? No Seal of Approval? But otherwise, good review as usual, AniMat. I can sing any song from this movie and one of the songs from the sequel (yes, I actually like the sequel). The only thing I remotely didn't like about this movie was the tree. Not only did it make no sense to have a talking tree, but she was more annoying than the gargoyles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The only scene I liked with her was when she gives Lon and Ben the slip, but even then I'm laughing at Lon and Ben, not the tree. Also, this is one of my favorite Disney lines:WIGGINS: Do you think we'll meet some savages?RATCLIFFE: If we do, we shall be sure to give them a proper English greeting.WIGGINS: Gift baskets!RATCLIFFE: And he came so highly recommended.
Holy shit, Surfs up 2 is next!
I actually love this movie too. Its no 6 on my favourite Disney movie lists.
Historically accurate! Pocahontas and John Smith never had a romantic relationship, Governor Rattcliffe tried to make piece with the natives. This film is as historically accurate, as saying that Lion king is a pitch perfect adaption of Hamlet.
Yes. This movie is 98% historically inaccurate and while I love this guy's reviews, he needs to re-read the history of Pocahontas again.
Lion King is actually pretty close to Hamlet in the places where it matters most.
With the European/native relationships you can't really make a movie out of it because it's incredibly complicated. They were dominated by tribal and European politics. Many of both the natives and the Europeans were more interested in fighting their rivals than fighting each other. For example the greatest massacres of natives happened during the beaver wars which were a series of large raids done by the Iriqious to gain hunting grounds because of the extremely lucrative fur trade. The Dutch supported it because they were the main traders while the French opposed it as many of the tribes overrun where their allies. The French were also major competitors to the Dutch in the fur trade so the Dutch handed out as many guns as the Iriqious wanted. This even came to clashes between the French and the Iriqious directly as the war went on all around the great lakes until the Iriqious had taken the whole area and more. These wars and the massive amount of land that was easily taken by the seemingly primitive Indians made the British population impatient and really wanting to expand into the now very sparsely populated Iriqious territory. However the British government had no interest in getting involved so it said "no" and when the war of Spanish succession began and Britain put heavy taxes on the Americans to pay for it that boiled over. Americans weren't happy that they were supposed to support British wars in Europe (Which they had no voice or stake in) yet Britain would refuse to allow them to even fight their own war to gain territory that was basically up for grabs and that would likely be taken by the French, Dutch or Spanish if they didn't move quickly.
So the interactions between natives and Europeans is extremely complicated.
Two Classic Reviews in two weeks. That's never happened before, has it?
"I wonder if they even bleed!" Well they were right. Nobody bled in this film.
The only thing that kept this movie G at the time was the fact that there was no blood.
This film was worse than any modern PG rated film! Moana should switch ratings with Pocahontas!
The 90’s Renaissance Era of Disney was the Greatest. It will be hard to beat if ever.
More of a gem than a classic.
A hidden gem of a Disney film that is only hidden by the Disney films that came before it like Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King and even Rescuers Down Under was stunning and that sequel film is more of a hidden gem than Pocahontas.
Definitely not a bad film by any means, also there was Hunchback of Nontradame, Hercules, Mulan and even Tarzan that ended off the Disney Renaissance period of the 90s.
Pocahontas is perhaps the middle of the second golden period for Disney films and if it was released in the 80s or even during the 70s it would have been better remembered.
Ayy Surfs Up 2 is next!
I guess the sound track is better than I remember.

You do sidestep 'sweetened history' anger that erupted when this movie came out - and still rightly haunts it. Sexualized female lead with very Western body exaggeration too.
Most of the Comments: "OH NO! Chris Etrata requested AniMat to review Surfs Up 2 with Wrestlers!"
is it bad this is my fave disney movie? 😳
Yes.
Oh my god, finally! A somewhat positive review of this movie! People are too harsh on this movie as if it's the worst Disney movie ever.
That "get rich quick" thing is actually an American thing after it became independent. Most governors at the time were more concerned with getting knighted or promoted to nobility rather than money so they would make big agreements with the natives or destroy other nation's ships.
25 years today
I use to really like this movie so much so that my room had Pocahontas curtains and bed covers.
I love this movie, and it was the first Disney movie that I felt like an adult watching. And I think it has one of the saddest ending in any Disneydom.
Just saw it for the first time. I actually liked it more than Lion King. But I am a big fan of some of the classic Disney artwork, and this reminded me a lot of Sleeping Beauty. I also noticed that they had put in a bit effort in the historical feel here.
Yea, me too. The Lion King is pretty overrated.

Wiggins at the end of this video is how Disney must've felt when Pocahontas didn't do as well as they'd hoped.
On the one hand, I'm surprised and impressed that Animat managed to get this Classic review out so quickly...on the other hand, he still hasn't reviewed Rock Dog. I don't know if he hasn't seen it yet, or if he's just trying to delay the inevitable, but we're waiting, bud.
MrWildcard531 Rock Dog isn't released in canada, so he's not gonna review it.
Animat:THIS MOVIE IS NOT A MASTERPIECE BUT IT'S SO DAMN GOOD!!!
Me:uh,you know that Pocahontas in real life was a story of pedophilia, right?
This was meant to be the big masterpiece of Disney but the Lion king witch came out a year before became the huge success Pocahontas was meant to be.
Can you do prince of Egypt
that's next
HEY ANIMAT! Can you maybe make another Animation Lookback on the Future PIXAR MOVIES Please! I'd liked to see some more if you have the time for that!?!
surfs up 2.
I still really enjoyed this movie and all of it’s memorable songs; but I can see his point of how it goes from silly for children to serious for adult, and it’s a good thing they didn’t do the real life story of “Pocahontas” because from what I heard that would not be ‘Disney’ worthy or kid friendly at all.
PS; I didn’t enjoy the sequel at all, sorry if you did.
Haven’t seen the sequel since my operation in 2002
I enjoy Pocahontas :)
One of the rare animated movies where the main character doesn’t interact with the main villain.
If you review animation/live action hybrid films, can you please review The Incredible Mr. Limpet? The animation is more prominent than in other animation/live-action combined films.
Where's Rock Dog!?!
It wasn't released in Canada. Not sure why though.
In Pokémon Sun and Moon
Maybe he'll review it when it comes out on DVD or becomes available for streaming.
The only people who call Pocahontas a masterpiece are the Norwegians. They liked this film more than Americans do and they love it like how others loved Mermaid, Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King.
Pocahontas is by far my favorite Disney film. I love the songs, I love the characters, the animation, the way they show the racism on BOTH sides instead of just strictly demonizing white people the entire time. Everything about it is fantastic. I honestly have absolutely no criticism to give it.
Pocahontas came out the year I was born. I think I feel a little young being called a classic lol
Is Open Season the next review?
(Key words being, "expand a franchise" and "Sony")
This is my favorite movie ever. My opinion
I love Pocahontas.
For once a review about the movie that doesn’t solely focus on how bad the historical accuracy is.
Disney Animation Producers: okay guys, this is going to be the one to win Best Picture!
Mel Gibson: *laughs in bad Scottish accent*
Oh god he's going to have to suffer through surfs up 2
I didn't know the movie had flaws before everyone started telling me so. Must say it's still my number 1 Disney animation, and have I seen a few.
People saying this movie is boring. Is that true?
Versipellis the rogue Changeling It depends on what you like to watch. The story has been done many times before, the characters are generic, but it does get intense at times and the art direction is some of the best I've seen. For me personally, visuals matter a lot more than for other people, so I appreciated this film on an artistic standpoint, but if you aren't like that, yeah, it would probably be a bore.
Please be good to this one Animat, not only is it one of Disney’s darker offerings, but it was also released on the birthday of my unofficial Disney Movie Surfer,
Mys scores:
Story: 6/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 6/10

Umm Animat, are you ever going to review your next Animat's Reviews of Rock Dog. Not unless it's a movie that didn't get a worldwide release.
The thing I hate the most about Pocahontas is that they got the original story wrong. Pocahontas 2 was ten times worse!
This movie is not my favorite Disney movie. I mean it does have its good parts and I'm not saying it's the worst, but knowing about the real story of Pocahontas does kind of make it difficult to like the story. I'm not saying that other people shouldn't like this story it's okay if you like it as long as you know the real story of Pocahontas.
Us city dwellers can earn a lot from tribes and the tribes are better at surviving and living in a post apocalyptic future.
True. And yes. They need to learn that as well.
I hope one day Animat does Animation Lookback Ralph Bakshi
What was the animated film he was talking about in the end?
Surf's Up 2
Judging from the song playing during the outdo, I'm going to guess that the next review is going to be Surf's Up. I hope it is, because I personally think it's an underrated movie.
Oh! Thank you for letting me know! I had forgotten that he had. Guess I better go watch it again. xP I wonder what movie he's going to be reviewing next then...?
